bamahelditsLastChanceProm.TheCampusActivityBoardmembersde-cidedtheywantedtotrysomethingfresh.
JasonGardner,theDirectorofStudentActivities,saidthatalotofhardworkandresearchwentintoputtingthispromtogether.Heexplainedhowhe,alongwiththeCampusActivityBoardmem-bers,cameupwiththisidea:“Well,theCampusActivityBoardmemberswantedtotrysomethingnew,andaftermuchresearch,wefoundthatTheLastChancePromwasverypopular.Wefiguredthatitwouldbesomethingfuntotry.”ThePromhadover100studentsinattendance.Themusicwasgreat,thefoodwasgreat,andthemoodwasjustright.UWAstudentDexterMcDonaldsaid,

Selma,Ala.,totakepartinthereen-actmentoftheMarchonMont-gomery.ThistripwasanopportunitytoextendBlackHis-toryMonth.TheBridgeCrossingJubilee,aweeklongfestivalthat
commemoratesavitalmomentintheCivilRightsMovement,ishostedbySelmaeveryyear.TheSelmatoMontgom-erymarchactuallyconsistedofthreemarches.Twoofthesemarchesfailed,duetotheharassmentofprotestorsandmarchers.SelmawasattheheartoftheCivilRightsMovement,andBloodySundayandtheSelmatoMontgomeryMarcharebothrememberedduringthisfestival.ThankstothestaffofStudentSupportServices,thestudentswereabletopartakeandexperiencesuchagreatandhistoricalevent.StudentSupportServices’counselor
AndreaFarquharsaidstudentsgatheredwiththecrowdoutsideBrownChapelAMEChurch,wherethereisamemo-rialtoDr.MartinLutherKing.“Themarch
starteddownMLKBoulevardandturnedrightandheadedfordowntownSelma.Somemarcherssangprotestsongs,somewavedsignsandflags,andothersmarchedmoresolemnly,”shesaid.Thiswasanhistoricalmomentforthe
participantsinthismarch,forin1965themarcherswereattackedbypolicewithbillyclubsandteargas.Finally,Dr.KingaskedGovernorGeorgeWallaceforprotectionforthemarchers.WallacegrantedKing’srequest.Thosemarchersjustwantedequalrights;theywantedtoexperiencejusticeforonceintheirlives.Althoughmistreatedandabused,theynevergaveup,andtheycontinuedtoleadanon-violentcampaignforequalrights.Ms.Farquharstatedthatwhenshe,
alongwiththerestofthecrowd,tookaleftontoBroadStreetandstartedto-wardstheEdmundPettusBridge,sheandothersbecomeemotional.Shecontin-ued,“ItwasamazingtobewalkinginthefootstepsofpeoplewhohadcreatedsomuchchangeinAmerica.”Aftercrossingthebridgeandexperi-
encingagreaterappreciationofequal-ity,StudentSupportServices’membersheadedbackoverthebridgetoWaterStreet,wheretherewasastreetfestivalwithfoodandshops.Sonotonlydidthisgroupenjoyanunforgettablemoment,buttheyalsowereentertainedbythefestivalandshopsfilledwithculture.StudentSupportServicesprovidedanopportunityforstudentstoexperiencehistoryfirst-hand.

theU.S.andCanadawereplanningtogotoJapanandstudyduringtheirtimeawayfromschool.One21-year-oldMeridianCommunityCollegestudenthadjustarrivedinTokyowhentheearthquakechangedherpreconceivednotionsofJapaneseculture.CarrieMitchellofMeridianhadjustarrivedinherhotelroomwhentheunmistakableshak-ingbegan.Asshemadeherwaydownthestairstosafety,
MitchellmetotherEnglishspeakingpeoplewhoweregoingthroughthesamenightmare.Theywerestillto-getherasthe8.9quakestopped,andthepanicstarted.Aswordoftheaftershocksandpossibletsunamisspread,Mitchellandhernewfriendsstayedtogether.Thehotelfoundasafeplacetoshelterthoseintheirchargeandmakethemconfortable.Mitchellmadeplanstoreturnhomeassoonasaflightbecameavailable.ShesafelyreturnedtoMeridianonThursdayaftermanydaysofprayersfromherfamilyandfriends.The2011GreatEarthquakeofJapanhasadeathtoll

FukushimaDai-ichinuclearpowerplant,andexpertsareworkingtorestartthedamagedcoolingsystembeforeradiationcanleakfromtheholdingtanks.Nowradiationhasbeenfoundinthemilkandfoodfromthesurroundingcountryside.ThiscontaminationwillcausemorehardshiponthefarmersofnorthernJapan.Manypeopleareexpectingagreatdropinthetour-

neighborhoodchildrenaroundthecountry.Oncethesechildrenhearthewell-knownsongassociatedwiththeicecreamman’struck,theirheartsbegintorapidlyrace,andthehighlightoftheirdayhasfinallyarrived.However,despitetheseem-
inglyinnocentappearanceofthisicecreammanandhisconsumers,oneicecream
contributorinNewYorkCityhasdestroyedthisexteriorinoneoftheworstwayspossible.OnMarch18th,LouisScalawasarrestedforallegedly
sellingillegalprescriptiondrugsfromhisicecreamtruck,andthisdrugdealerapparentlymademorethan$1milliondollarsintheprocess.Scalasoldicecreamtonu-merousinner-cityNewYorkchildrenfromhisseeminglyappealing“LickitySplit”truck.However,thistruckwouldsupposedlymakeaddition-
alstopsatpredeterminedspotswheredrugcustomersknewtheycouldbuytheillegaldrugoxycodone.Ac-cordingtotheNewYorkOfficeoftheSpecialNarcoticsProsecutor,Scalaapparentlysoldmorethan40,000prescriptionpillsfromhisicecreamtruckarounddiffer-entareasofStatenIsland.Thisdealeriscurrentlyfacingchargesforheadinga
30-persondrugringwhichincludedmorethanadozendrugrunnerswhofilledfakeprescriptions.Additionally,officialssuspectthatNancyWilkinsabusedherpositionasanassistantataManhattanorthopedicofficebystealingblankprescriptionpadsandsellingthemfor$100dollarsapage.MostoftheindividualswhoScalarecruitedtofill
thesebogusprescriptionswerebothfinanciallydesper-ateandultimatelyaddictedtooxycodone.Accordingtoofficials,thiscasedemonstratesthein-
tenseriseofmanypeople’sprescriptiondrugaddictionbecauseitshowsthedesperatedistributionpracticesofdrugdealersandthestructureofthedrugunderworld.
