23rd October 2015
Dear parents,
This week has been busy with Parents’ evenings – I am always overwhelmed by the number of parents who attend this event; I hope you all found it useful. We have been working hard to change our assessments this term and we are no longer using levels; instead we are using the words ‘emerging’, ‘expected’ and ‘exceeding’ the requirements of the year group. More details on assessment will be sent out with the end of term report in December.
Last week our Year 5 children went on a very successful trip to the London Aquarium and Year 1 children went on a walk, to help them with their recount writing.
Thank you to all those parents who attended the class galleries of work and/or took part in a maths lesson. The galleries, as ever, were really well supported and showcased some of the children’s work this half term. I have also had really positive feedback about the maths lessons – I know the children loved having their parents in a lesson! The Key Stage 1 maths week will be week beginning 30th November.
As a reminder, school finishes on Friday for half term and children do not return to school until Tuesday 3rd November.
Money being sent in to school
Please don’t forget that we will no longer accept lose money. All money must come in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, class, reason for the money and the necessary paperwork enclosed.
School Uniform
We have noticed that lots of children are not wearing the correct school uniform, especially school shoes.
Children must wear proper black school shoes to school. They can bring their trainers but these must be kept in their lockers and used at the appropriate time.
Please remember that black cardigans are not school uniform and that we do sell purple cardigans from the Main Office at £8.50 each.
Please also remember that PE kits should be brought in to school on a Monday and left in school all week. This allows impromptu sessions during the week. Kits can be taken home on a Friday to be washed.
Please make sure that all clothing is labelled. You can either get sew in labels, iron in labels or use a fabric pen although these can wear off quite quickly.
Thank you for your support.
Free School Meals Application
If you think you might be entitled to Free School Meals, please complete the form at the back of this Newsletter and return to the Main Office.
If you are entitled to Free School Meals then this will entitle your child to half price school trips.

Downside v Ramridge (Home) Thursday 15th October Won 9 – 0 Last night the Year 5/6 boys played their second game in the football league against Ramridge. A great start to the game saw Adil lay the ball of to Mario who scored in the top corner putting us 1-‐0 up after only 44 seconds! The Downside boys were buoyed by this excellent start and began to really dominate the game before Rohaan finished coolly to make it 2-‐0. Soon after, a poor clearance from their goalkeeper saw Rohaan score his second and make the score a comfortable 3-‐0. The first half continued with Downside very much on top before Mario scored his second of the game with a shot from out wide. The first half ended with Downside 4-‐0 up! The second half started with Downside keen to add to the goal tally. Never before had we managed more than 4 goals in a game. This duck was soon broken when Mario teed himself up to volley the ball in for his hat trick. Nabeel soon made it 6-‐0 when he was alert to follow in the rebound after the keeper had spilt the ball. For the remainder of the game every player worked hard to maintain our clean sheet and several more chances went begging. However it soon became apparent that the game was going to belong to Mario. A long ball from a cleared corner saw Mario one on one with the keeper to score his fourth and Downsides seventh. Mario’s fifth soon followed as he smashed one in from the edge of the box. 8-‐0 Downside! As if this wasn’t enough Mario picked the ball up deep once more and danced through their whole team before scoring his sixth and Downsides ninth! With minutes to go, Mario went close twice more, hitting the post and putting another inches wide. The game ended with everybody ecstatic and a 9-‐0 victory. Man of the match: The whole team deserves credit for an excellent performance from start to finish but there can only be one Man of the Match in Mario with 6 goals and an outstanding captain’s performance.

Year 4 Tag rugby On Thursday 15th October we took a team of year 4 pupils to Luton rugby club to compete in our first tag rugby tournament at this age group. A slow start saw us draw the first game 0-‐0 with Farley, neither side really managing to threaten the opposition line. This, however, acted as a bit of a wakeup call for everyone and game 2 was much improved with us beating Southfields 4-‐1, tries coming from Ayaan (3) and Taha. Game 3 saw us continue in much the same as tries from Ayaan (2), Taha and Konain saw us beat Ferrars A team 4-‐0. This put us in an excellent position in the group going into the final game against rivals Pirton Hill A. Unfortunately some silly mistakes cost us and we ended up losing 4-‐1, our try coming from Konain. This loss meant we finished as group runners up and progress through to the knockout section of the shield. In the quarter finals we came up against a very strong Bushmead team and despite some great running rugby by Downside we went out with a 4-‐0 loss. Bushmead then went on to lose the final in extra time to Pirton Hill. All of the team played really well and never gave up trying throughout. Well done year 4.
