HOMILY by Richard Leonard I read the other day a true story about a baby girl who was seriously ill in a Neonatal ICU. The paediatric specialist said there was very little hope. The baby’s five-year-old brother, Michael, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. ‘I want to sing to her’, he kept saying. Children were not allowed in the ICU, but Michael’s mother eventually insisted that he be able to see his sister. When he got to the humidicrib he sang: ‘You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey’. The nurse reported that as Michael sang, the baby’s pulse rate began to calm down and become steady. ‘Keep on singing, Michael’, encouraged his mother with tears in her eyes. ‘You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.’ The baby recovered and left the hospital three weeks later. I am not pretending for a moment that Michael’s song healed his sister, but we should never underestimate the power of human support and love. It helps us to be healed. The Gospel story of the healing of the deaf mute is striking because it is one of the few stories where the crowd makes the request of healing from Jesus. This is understandable given that the man cannot speak for himself, but the scene, as Mark writes it, is very touching. Mark tells us that the crowd brought the man to Jesus. ‘They’ beg Jesus to heal him, ‘they’ are ordered not to tell anyone about the miracle, but ‘they’ go straight out and tell everyone about it. What happens there is what happens here every Sunday. Coming to Mass is not a private affair. It is not my Mass, my prayer, my Church. The pronouns we use reveal a lot about our attitudes. It’s our Eucharist, our prayer and our Church. Within the Mass there are opportunities for private prayer, but Eucharist is, essentially, an action of the assembled community. In our own way we bring the deaf and the mute to Jesus each time we gather. This is what the Prayers of the Faithful are all about. This is why they are so important. When we visit another parish we can tell a lot about it by the care with which the intercessions are composed and compiled. If they only attend to the needs of the parish and never with the wider Church or the world, if they focus on the needs of the Catholic world and never with the plight of those in crisis, who may not share our faith or may hold to another or no faith, it says so much. The Church has always believed in the power of intercessory prayer. Not that God needs to be reminded what our world needs. God knows that better than we know it. But intercessory prayer sorts our priorities and establishes who has a claim on our affections and concerns. It also enables others to know that we stand in solidarity with them. And miracles still happen when we are one with those for whom we hope and pray. Sometimes the first miracle that occurs is that we notice the needs of some group beyond our immediate circle. Their suffering moves us and we choose to help them. Let’s pray in this Eucharist that Christ removes our blindness, opens our ears and loosens our tongues so that we speak up for those who are most in need of a healing word that brings them justice and peace. © Richard Leonard SJ 4th September 2021 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B Fathers Day

The Archdiocese of Brisbane has standards of conduct for workers to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children. Our commitment to these standards requires that we conduct working with children checks and background referencing for all persons who will engage in direct and regular involvement with children and young people (0 - 18 years) and/or vulnerable adults. The organisation is fully committed to child safety and has a 0 tolerance to abuse of children or vulnerable adults.

National Child Protection Week 5-11 September 2021.

Every child, in every community, needs a fair go. To treat all of Australia’s children fairly, we need to make sure every family and community has what kids

need to thrive and be healthy.

Safeguarding Sunday seeks to acknowledge the immense damage caused by the sexual abuse of children and adults at risk, including by priests, religious and lay people within Catholic contexts. It makes a commitment to practices and protocols that create and maintain safe environments for all people. It invites people to pray for those harmed by abuse directly and indirectly.

Catholic Church, Structure, Symbolisms and Meaning What will I see and what happens in a Catholic Church?

Other Things in the Church :

Holy water: Water that has been blessed, a reminder of baptism and of the supernatural life of God's grace.

The Sacred Chrism: (Latin: Sacrum Chrisma) Olive oil, which has perfume mixed with it, consecrated by the bishop annually. Signifies strengthening in dedication to God. Used after baptism, for confirmation, in the ordination of priests, and in the consecration of bishops.

The Oil of the Sick: (Latin: Oleum Infirmorum) Olive oil blessed by the bishop annually. Signifies strengthening for healing. Used in the Anointing of the Sick (Jas. 5:14) The Oil of Catechumens: (Latin: Oleum Catechumenorum) Olive oil blessed by the bishop annually. Signifies strengthening for repentance and turning away from evil. Used in preparation for baptism.

The thurible: The thurible (Latin: thuribulum, “censer”) is used for carrying and burning incense.

The incense boat: The incense boat (Latin: navicula, “little boat”) holds the incense before it is placed in the thurible for burning. The processional cross: The processional cross hearkens back to the days of the Roman army when the standard-bearer would carry the insignia of a particular legion into battle. The cross is the mark of a Christian.

The crucifix (Altar cross): During the celebration of Mass, there must be a cross with the figure of Christ crucified on or near the altar. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002), n. 117.) Like St Paul, Catholics believe that the Eucharist is a memorial of the death of the Lord (1 Cor. 11:26), and we preach Christ crucified (1 Cor. 1:23).

The Paschal candle: A new Paschal candle is prepared and blessed every year at the Easter Vigil. This light stands near the altar during the Easter Season and near the baptismal font during the rest of the year. It may also stand near the casket during the funeral rites.

The candles: Mass must be celebrated with natural candles, which signify the presence of Christ, our light.

The tabernacle lamp: A candle, often red, that burns near the tabernacle when the Blessed Sacrament is present there.

The burse: A folded cloth case which holds the corporal before and after use. Customary but no longer required.

The chalice veil: A veil that is white or the colour of the day which covers the chalice before and after its use. Recommended but no longer required. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002), n. 118.

The Missal stand: A stand that is placed on the altar to hold the Missal.

The Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross are fourteen points of reflection that follow Jesus from his condemnation to death to his burial.

The sacrarium: A drain in the sacristy that flows directly into the earth. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002), n. 334.) Used for respectfully disposing of holy water, blessed ashes, the water used to wash the altar linens, etc., but never for the Blessed Sacrament. (Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum (25

March 2004), n. 107.)

To be continued …………...

A new RCIA programme will start in October. Please invite anyone who would like to join the Catholic

Church in this community to contact the Parish Office on 07 33590239 or [email protected] ASAP.
