ABOUT ME (Varsha KUMARI)

I am a Textile Design student from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, INDIA. This logbook is a record of my journey in France. I am extremely thankful to UNESCO and Foundation Culture & Diversity for selecting me for Travel to Learn Art and Craft and giving me this opportunity.

1st APRIL TO 23rd JULY, 2012 | VARSHA.K

DUPERRÉ SCHOOLParis

In the first week after arriving we had some classes at “Duperre School” which is a Textile School. There we learnt some textile work and I learnt Weaving, Embroidery and Enamel paint techniques. I had already worked on loom but this time it was different from before, so I basically tried to learn its mechanism. On the 1st day in school I worked on loom during the first half and in the second half I learnt Enamel painting. A teacher demonstrated all techniques of Enamel painting and he also displayed his beautiful enamel work. On the Second day I learnt some exciting Embroidery techniques from Mr. Henry and also we got an opportunity to see the jury work of the students, which was really good.

I wanted to make my work more beautiful devote sufficient time to my work and also visit as many places I could. After visiting some of these places I felt that the world is really very beautiful.

Nevertheless some days were very disappointing because I wanted to see as much as I could but it was difficult finding company. In Mulhouse I had seen so many places like museums, gardens, parks, the zoological park and nearby natural lake & mountains. Mulhouse is full of bounties of nature and the relaxed atmosphere is really heart warming .

I was surrounded by flowers everywhere I went which had a direct influence on my work.

I learnt a very important lesson of dividing my time between work and leisure. And if you are in an industry so you have so many opportunities to learn so much.

I was in the marketing department. Hence I got an opportunity to learn about marketing. How to sell a product, to introduce the new design with different possibilities and how to make beautiful products by using limited materials, and how to organise in a catalogue....

I made some products for DMC catalogue, using DMC manufactured colour threads since DMC has a huge colour range. I also made some lifestyle products and teenage accessories.

A few designs I developed after the initial work was done. I researched and studied the traditional design motifs and techniques present in the DMC’ s catalogues from the museum. The design was developed for the Spring Summer collection.
