Munghana Lonene FM, in partnership with Build It Njhakanjaka, presented a new build-ing to the Xivumbiwa Crèche in Nkuzana. The building consists of six rooms and an offi ce for the administration.

The handing over was held at Nkuzana last Friday.

The regional manager of the Limpopo SABC, Mrs Tshamano Makuya, said that they cared about the people who lost hope in life, “but as the broad-caster, we look at what we can do to help the people who need assistance. The same children we are helping today will come back and do the same for other needy children.” Maluleke started the crèche in 2008 and, at present, they take care of more than 100 children between the ages of four months and six years.” She said that she never thought that she would own a nice building one day. She thanked the radio station who saw her need with the children from poverty-stricken families.

The manager of Njhakanjaka Build It, Mr Stan-ley Makondo, said that the company saw the need to help young children from poverty-stricken families.

Two Khatisa pupils die in taxi accidentTwo pupils were killed and several injured when the driv-er of a taxi from Mdabula, ferrying school children to the Khatisa Secondary School at Mukhomi-Gumbani, allegedly lost control early on Wednes-day morning and the vehicle roverturned.

The circumstances of the accident are still sketchy, but eyewitnesses believe the driver tried to avoid potholes, lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. After the accident,

“We feel our community is not safe”The recent discovery of the body of a 49-year-old woman on the campus of the University of Venda is sending shock-waves throughout the campus and the community.

Both the provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, and Univen spokes-person, Takalani Dzaga, con-fi rmed that Ms Brenda Ndo vhe’s body was found in the furrow next a laboratory at about 06:00 on Friday. “She was found by other employees when they came to report for work. She had open wounds on her head, possibly infl icted by a bloodstained pair of scissors that was found next to her. She might have been raped as her clothes were found placed next to her,” said Mulaudzi.

Dzaga confi rmed that the vic-tim was an employee of a private company that is contracted to do cleaning at the institution. “It looks like the incident happened when she was preparing to report for duty, as she was one of the cleansers,” said Dzaga.

One of Ndovhe’s three chil-dren, Ms Rudzani Masia (31), told Limpopo Mirror that they were still in shock after the news o f t h e i r moth-er’s

death. She said they were in-formed that her mother had been left behind at the gate while she was being searched by security guards, when her colleague walked to the building that she was supposed to report in.

“After some time passed, her colleague, realizing that our mother was not reporting at her work station, phoned her. A man answered and stated that she was lying unconscious next to the clinic building. My mother’s colleague rushed to the scene and found her body. Her cell phone and handbag were missing,” said Masia.

Meanwhile, Dzaga said the management is very concerned about killings that are happening on the campus.

Earlier this year, a student was found dead next to the same spot where Ndovhe was found. Her hand was broken and it was also suspected that she was raped before she was strangled. On 13 May last year, a student, Taka-lani Mbulungeni of Vhurivhuri village, was also stabbed to death on the campus. Recently, two children under the age of nine were found raped and strangled to death in Thohoyandou, not far from the university campus. “This is very bad. We feel that

our community is not safe on the campus. Unfortunately, it is not possible for our security personnel to be available everywhere on campus. As management, we are in the process in putting technological mea-

sures in place that will help us to monitor movement on campus,” said Dzaga.

He also mentioned that the campus security personnel are working very closely with the police to establish the reason behind Ndovhe’s death. “Considering the other killings, we are investigating

the possibility of a serial killer roaming in the area,” he added.

Mulaudzi appealed to the community to assist with infor-mation that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the possible killers.

In his state-of-the-district ad-dress that was held at Tshaulu last Wednesday, the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tshitere-ke Matibe, also raised his concern about the killings. Matibe said he was suspicious that a serial killer might be on the loose, considering the recent killing of the two school girls. He also urged the community to help the police with information that can lead to the arrest of whoever is responsible.

Vhavenda King Toni Mphe-phu Ramabulana also added his voice to those who are protesting against the killings. Mphephu Ramabulana said he was appeal-ing to community members to help the police with information, while Vhamusanda Vho-Thivhu-lawi Makumbane of Tshisaulu, where Ndovhe comes from, said he was touched by her death. “Ndovhe comes from a very poor background. She was raised by relatives as her parents died while she was still young. Now her younger children will grow up with no parent, as Ndovhe was a single parent,” said Makumbane before he broke down in tears.

Former Minister Sydney Mufamadi, Ndovhe’s ex-em-ployer, also sent his condolences to the family. Ndovhe worked as a domestic servant at Mufamadi’s house in Pretoria for fi ve years.

She also worked for seven years for different cleaning com-panies at Univen.

No funeral arrangements had been fi nalised at the time of going to press, but it is expected that she will be buried at Tshisahulu tomorrow (Saturday).

Attempts to get comment from the SRC at Univen proved fruit-less as the president, Mr Uhuru Mofokeng, could not be reached.

late Mr Henning on Friday, 25 July, at 15:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church Soutpansberg on the corner of Stubbs and Anderson Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). “Thank you for all the messages of condolences with the passing away of my father,” said Carl. A full article on the life and times of this legendary resident of the area will appear in next week’s edition of the Limpopo Mirror.

When this paper visited the school, there was a meeting of stakeholders and pupils were leaving the school premises in groups and the morale was visibly very low.

“We are saddened by what happened here. We were ready to start with the day’s pro-gramme when we heard about the accident. Due to the severity of it, we were forced to cancel everything. We are just comfort-ed by the fact that stakeholders came here to offer us support

and we are now better,” said Mr David Sarila, the school principal.

Mhlaba Mabasa, a granny who stays near the scene of the accident, said she was outside the house when she heard a loud noise coming from the road. “I rushed in that direction, only to see a capsized taxi just next to my yard. The taxi was full of school children who were badly injured, and I later heard that one of them had died on the spot and the other one at the hospital.”

pupils who were al-ready in classes were called to the assembly where the devastating news was broken to them.

On hearing the sad news, many cried hys-terically.

Stakeholders, who included civics, coun-cillors, pastors and the local traditional leadership, visited the school and offered the pupils and staff support.

There was no way learning and teaching could continue and pupils were sent back home.

“We will keep our young girls busy and keep them off the streets and the cars they climb into every day.”

The 24-year-o ld Makha-do-based Lawrence ‘Lolo’ Lula-ma, who has started a modeling agency as an answer to a lack of exposure and belonging for aspi-rant models in Vhembe District, made this positive statement on Tuesday.

Glamour Modeling Agency was formed recently with the purpose of giving young girls an opportu-nity to fi nd themselves in terms of self-discipline and self-control.

“We built this agency to show our young girls that there’s more to life than sex, consuming al-cohol, smoking and partying,” Lulama said. “It’s our feeling that they must engage themselves in something that will benefi t them in a way – not ruin their lives!” He said that it was high time that local girls, through this agency, got opportunities to pose for brands which used the print media and online media for advertising their new produc t s , such as clothes, cosmetics and do-mestic appliances.

“We hope that

this agency will go places and get to be fi nancially viable,” he said. “Once we have started generating some money, we will also focus on charitable works. We are most touched by the issue of cancer among our girls and women, and we feel it is our responsibility to do our bit in terms of cancer aware-ness projects.” Lulama called upon all interested businesses to consider sponsoring the agency in one way or another. The agency also needs sponsorship in the form of space where models can hold meetings and do training. “Our district is rich in talent as this is also evident in the potential of our youth,” he said. He pointed out that there is a lack of modeling agen-cies in the district, where models can belong and feel at home while pursu ing the i r

modeling dreams. “We’ve just discovered that void and decid-ed to fi ll it, so that people from all over the country can start respecting us for our efforts and hard work,” he said. “We are ready for anything that comes our way.” Some of the models already signed with Glamour Modeling Agency include Sandra Muluvhu (18), Mukovhe Liphadzi (16), Poppy Muvhulawa (17) and Hulisani Marole (18).

Poppy Muvhulawa said: “As a model, I am happy to belong to Glamour. I am grateful. It’s most exciting to model, particularly when it’s one’s passion.” Glamour Modeling Agency can be con-tacted at 072 854 5106.

Dissatisfaction with delays in dam project

Rodgers Khosa not a suspect in murders

“We never get tenders,” complains MBF

COPE’s Vhembe regional chairperson, Cllr Geoffrey Tshibvumo.

COPE’s Vhembe regional chairperson, Cllr Geoffrey Tshibvumo, expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in the completion of the Nandoni Dam project. This was in reaction to the Vhem-be District Municipality’s state-of-the-district address, which was presented by the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, last Thursday.

Tshibvumo focussed on the scarcity of running water to most areas in the district and indicated that this was due to a misallocation of tenders. The ex-ecutive mayor acknowledged that the Nandoni dam project had been delayed because of the continuous changing of pipes. “But he (Matibe) said nothing about the reasons behind this continuous changing of pipes, and whether the project specification had been followed to the letter or not,” he said.

“What are the steps that VDM, through the office of the executive mayor, is going to take in order to recover the lost money?” he asked. “This kind of misallocation of tenders and changing of pipes led to too many tenders being advertised to do a job that should have been finished long ago by the first contractors.”

He then called for the VDM to consider doing away with the process of giving tenders for patron-age. “We cannot forever base our excuses on the Nandoni dam project,” he said. “The municipality has been dealing with this project for more than 15 years and this is unacceptable. Let us be firm

(when awarding tenders), and look for people who are more knowledgeable. Then our communities will have water.”

A 50-year-old man, who has been the victim of jungle justice so prevalent in Limpopo, is lucky to be alive.

The man, who almost lost all his belongings when a mob plundered his home, escaped. He was allegedly mistakenly linked to the death of two people, whose bodies were found in the area. He has been cleared by the police.

Mr Famanda Rodgers Khosa of Olifantshoek became the victim of circumstances when he was accused by his community of being responsible for the deaths of two people, whose bodies were found with gunshot wounds near Mashamba in May. Kho-sa, who works for the Department of Agriculture, said he was resting at home on a Sunday, 15 June, when he heard an enraged mob coming to his home. They allegedly threatened to burn down his house.

“They had arrived in a car, and while they were still debating among themselves, I found a chance to escape the fury of the mob and sought refuge in the police station at Tiyani. I was later told that there was a person who had implicated me in the killing of the two people, and I told them that I knew nothing about the incident,” he said.

He said he was later taken to the Tshitale police station for questioning and, surprisingly, his hands and feet were cuffed. “I was interrogated with the man who was said to have implicated me. The man said he did not know anything about the incident and that he only saw me at the local tavern and did not know anything about the killing of the two people. That was when the cuffs were removed and I was taken to the cells, where I spent the night,” he said.

He mentioned that he was released the next day at around 16:00 and provided with transport to take him home. He did not go straight home, because he was not sure how the community would receive him, and stayed with his uncle in another village for two weeks before going back home.

Khosa said the incident nearly destroyed his life and nearly tore his family apart. “My reputation has been badly damaged. I am a law-abiding per- Mr Rodgers Khosa.

son who respects the country’s laws. My life and those of my children and family have been put at risk. The ordeal was so terrible that I did not eat for three days.”

He said that he was happy that the police had cleared him of any involvement in the case. “I have always said I know nothing about the incident and I still maintain that I am innocent. I know nothing about the killings and people should not stare at me as if I am a criminal. I am still the very same good person they knew, who could not even hurt a fly,” he said.

He said he failed to understand why, out of the whole community, they picked him as being responsible for the deaths. He is grateful for the support he is receiving from local pastors, who came and prayed with the family. He expressed the hope that the police will soon arrest those responsible and restore his reputation.

Members of the Makhado Business Forum (MBF) confronted the Makhado Municipality last Thursday, complaining about the alleged harassment of members, the awarding of tenders to “outsiders” and the lack of proper consultation when implementing by-laws.

During a session that lasted for three hours, stakeholders discussed issues with representatives of the municipality and tried to find solutions to the challenges faced by some businesspeople.

The chairperson of the MBF, Mr Dickson Khoza, complained that tenders were awarded mostly to

companies from outside the municipal boundaries. “We have competent local companies who always bid for tenders, but never get appointed,” he said.

In reaction to this, the chief financial officer, Ms Mikateko Makhubela, said that proper procedures were followed when awarding tenders and the mu-nicipality was guided by its supply chain regulation framework and the rules applying to the bid com-mittee. She said locality was not restricted to the local communities but included the entire country.

She said the municipality should work together with local businesses to find ways of empowering them, while the municipality had to follow legis-lative guidelines at the same time.

Members of the MBF also complained about the manner in which the municipality amends and ap-proves by-laws without proper consultation. Some members accused municipal officials of harassing them and stopping them from conducting business in residential areas, pending the outcome of rezon-ing applications. In some cases, the municipality disconnected the electricity to premises to stop businesses from operating.

The municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, told the delegation that it was the management’s task to implement the municipal by-laws, not to change them. He advised the forum to contact the office of the mayor, should they be unhappy with certain by-laws.

“By-laws are proposed by the council and we cannot change them; our task is to implement them. The only challenge is that people who should attend public participation meetings to influence these decisions do not (attend these). They only complain instead of participate,” he said.

Another problem highlighted by the MBF was the municipality’s interpretation of the National Road Traffic Act and the changes made in the last month or so. Much of the criticism was aimed at the system in place when registering vehicles and ap-plying for various licences. The forum complained that a large number of driving schools are affected by the changes and the owners are now finding it very difficult to conduct business. The forum felt that the municipality should at least have consulted stakeholders, such as the Makhado Driving School Association.

Sendedza community fed-up with crimeResidents of Sendedza at Tshavhalovhedzi in Nzhelele marched to the Siloam police station on Sunday, protest-ing against the rise in cas-es of housebreaking in the area. While marching to the police station, community members sang struggle songs while holding placards stating, among others, “we are tired of thieves” and “we are tired of not sleeping”.

A fortnight ago, community members decided at the vil-lage’s tribal meeting that if the criminals involved in housebreaking inci-dents were from the area, they would be evicted from the vil-lage. During the last six weeks, more than 14 cases of house-breaking were report-ed. Most of the stolen goods were television sets, clothes, kitchen appliances and food.

One of the victims of the crime spree, Mr Tshifhiwa Matsedu, said it was very frus-trating. “Thieves are very cruel. Imagine you buy an item, using your last money, and they just snatch it like that,” he said.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, at around 02:30, a young man was found at someone’s home and the community was then convinced he was the culprit responsible for the burglaries in the area. Community members decided to march to the police station in the after-noon, suggesting that the police increase their visibility in the community and also to help them evict the family of the man who was thought to be ter-

rorising the community.The station commissioner,

Lt Col Madala, responded on Monday and said such evictions were not the mandate of police officials. He said the matter should be referred to the Mphe-phu Territorial Council.

“Our mandate is to promote peace within the community. Crime-prevention strategies will continuously be imple-mented, such as the distribu-tion of crime-prevention hints and promoting partnerships (against crime) through different

structures, including the CPF,” he said.

The police spokesperson, W/O Edward Tharaga, said it was established that the suspect works and stays in Giyani and he was apparently not around when the incidents occurred. “Community members are just spreading unfounded rumours and there is no proof that it’s him,” he said.

Community members, how-ever, decided to resolve the problem this coming Sunday (July 27) during a tribal meeting.

The local Sanco chairperson, Mr Marubini (left), hands over a memorandum to the chairperson of the community policing forum, Mr Madzivhandila (right), at the Siloam police station on Sunday.

Members of the community staged a protest march to the Siloam police station to highlight the problem of ongoing housebreaking crimes in their community.

Provision of water to communities a priority in budgetThe provision of water to the commu-nities in the district received priority in the Vhembe state-of-the-district ad-dress delivered by the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, at the Paroshi-na Church in Tshaulu last Wednesday.

“We are pleased to inform the people in the Vhembe region that the pipeline from Nandoni Dam to Univen has been commissioned and completed. We have indicated in the previous budget that, as a water authority district municipality, water is our key priority and we are committed to completing some water projects before the end of the fi nancial year,” he added.

According to Matibe, the benefi ciaries

of the commissioned line are the Thohoy-andou CBD, Muledane, Thohoyandou P East and Tswinga village. “The long wait for Dumasi, Ha-Mphego and Budeli villages to receive clean water will be a thing of the past,” Matibe said.

He tabled a budget of R1.45 billion for the 2014/15 fi nancial year and said they had set aside R605 million for water proj-ects. He warned communities, however, not to make illegal water connections as these would hamper the efforts of the district municipality to deliver water to all the people. “More than 3 000 households in the Vhembe region will be electrifi ed in our partnership with Eskom. Some of the

villages to be electrifi ed include Bennde Mutale, Tshiawelo and Malale. We urge indigent households to register for free basic electricity,” added Matibe.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said the traditional leaders were ready to work with the plan implemented by the district municipality. “We are able to see the success of some of the district’s implementation and we urge communities to be patient when some of the projects cannot be completed in time. The good relationship between the municipalities and traditional leaders are the way to go for the delivery of services,” said King Mphephu.

“SODA an ANC lobbying event” - COPEThe COPE offi ce in Vhembe has criticized the local ANC councillors and some offi cials and accused them of turning the state-of-the-district address event into “a rally of the ruling party (ANC)”.

The event was held on the 16th at the Parousie Church in Tshaulu.

“When I was driving to the SODA venue (state of the district address), I thought I was lost, be-cause there were ANC marshals deployed to direct all the digni-taries to the venue,” said COPE’s Vhembe regional chairperson, Cllr Geoffrey Tshibvumo.

“Why did we not use our own offi cials to usher people to the venue? Offi cial events must be accorded the offi cial status that they deserve as per the stan-dards.”

Tshibvumo indicated that all government offi cials must refrain from using government-related events to lobby for their political parties.

“COPE acknowledges, accepts and respect that all the govern-ment events are offi cial events and not political gatherings of specifi c organisations,” he said.

He added that COPE remained disappointed by the way in which

ANC councillors and some offi -cials also took to singing ANC slogans right inside the venue.

“If all other opposition parties were to also sing their slogans in the venue, what would have happened to the event itself? Wouldn’t that kind of competi-tion or behaviour have destroyed the whole event?” Tshibvumo asked.

He pointed out that municipal councils are constituted accord-ing to the Municipal Structures Act. “The way in which the day-to-day business of the municipal-ity is run, must be in accordance with the relevant Acts,” he said.

Fire destroys six family huts in Shigalo village

The Shigalo community is in shock, following the mysterious burning to ashes of six huts belonging to different families in the village.

The incidents which happened at different times two weeks ago, left some of the families with no place to sleep and some with all their belongings completely burnt to ashes. The affected families are those of Nwa-Juwawa Sithole, who was not home at the time, Justice Nghonyama, Nwa-Zulu Maluleke and Edward Maluleke.

According to the local headman, Hasani Samson Maluleke, the fires started on Friday and the last of the houses was torched in the early hours of Saturday. Maluleke, who is also known as headman July, said they had no suspects so far and that they were still trying to figure out who could be behind the spate of fires in the village.

Seven-year-old Steven Chauke, the grandson of Nwa Juwawa Sithole, was at his grandmother’s home, watching television while his brothers were

was away at the traditional women’s initiation, called tikhomba, when the incident happened.” Steven became an instant hero when he saved this siblings from a certain death after noticing the fire, which started at around 01:00, and woke them up. They managed to save a few belong-ings from the one hut, but the other

one was completely destroyed as it was locked.

Local civic chairperson John Ba-loyi said the situation was sickening and out of control in the village. “We are highly disturbed by people who walk around drinking alcohol throughout the night. We are going to seek permission from our chief that we hold a meeting and seek ways to end this carnage,” he said.

King Toni urges leaders to work together

“Young farmers important in war against poverty”

Khosikhulu Vho-Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana warned that unnecessary ructions between traditional leaders and councillors prevented effective service delivery.

He was speaking during the Vhembe district state-of-the-district address last Wednesday in Tshisaulu outside Thohoyandou. He said traditional leaders and councillors should work together with the aim of accelerating service delivery in the communities.

According to Vho-Thovhele Mphephu Ramabu-lana, rumours of nepotism often surfaced when there were government and municipal projects in the community and there was conflict between a councillor and a traditional leader. He said when political and traditional leaders co-operated and worked together, service delivery was accelerated and communities developed.

“We often hear about people complaining and about disagreements between the traditional leaders and ward councillors, instead of hearing about the progress of the project,” he said.

He added that traditional leaders and councillors should liaise from time to time, as this would help communities to address the challenges of service delivery.

Khosikhulu Vho-Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana urged leaders to work together to ensure service delivery.

The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Joy Motshoga, ac-knowledged the role of the youth within the agricultural sector during the recent Aspirant Young Farmers of the Year awards at The Ranch hotel outside Polokwane.

“Agriculture is another way of com-bating poverty in our communities and is also playing an important role in economic development,” she said.

She added that the competition wants to

encourage young people to get involved in agriculture.

According to Motshoga, there is a view that agriculture is for the aged and not for the youth, who opt for white-collar jobs. “There is a lot of money in agriculture and we are trying to lure our youth into this field. This is a succession plan, because the aged pass on and we might be left with no food producers. There would be no food security, so we are planning in time for the future,” she said.

The best young farmer in the national export market is Julius Maela of Water-berg, who received R150 000.

The best secondary school in agricul-ture, Rekoba High, won R80 00. The best primary school in agriculture is Olifans-drift Primary in the Waterberg district, while Tswarelao Masutha of Giyani won the category of top house producer.

Bakotudi Primary won the division for top informal market and they received R80 000.

“Mentally challenged pupils need good education”

Photographed after the event are, from left to right, Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama, MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe, Thovhele Vho-Rudzani Kutama, Musiwa Machete, Cllr Percy Mashimbye and Mr Robert Sirwali (Department of Health, Vhembe).

MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe talks with pupils of Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School during the event.

Three clinics around Sinthumule and Kutama hosted a mental-health campaign to create awareness and fight the stigma attached to mental-health patients at the Ravele Hall last Thursday.

The MEC for Health, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe, said this year’s campaign on mental illness and suicide sent a powerful message to counter the perception that mental illnesses are a secondary health concern that can be delayed until more immediate and press-ing health care issues have been addressed.”The relevance of this theme to the current situation cannot be overemphasized. Mentally challenged people are human beings too and must be taken good care of,” said Kgetjepe.

He called for communities to accept, support and treasure mentally ill patients. He said suicide was often a consequence of society’s failing to recognize and treat serious mental illnesses, such as depression and schizophrenia.

Thovhele Vho-Rudzani Sinthumule urged the community not to push these people away. “We have this kind of event because we want to show mentally challenged people that we love and accept them. What we can do is to take them to schools, where they can get an education,” says Sinthumule.

One of the people staying with a mentally challenged person urged parents to stop abusing these people and to stop using them as sources of

income. He said the disability grants should be used in the way they were intended. The event was sponsored by Phadziri Bus Company.

James Malaka, busy repairing shoes.

Malaka puts food on the table by repairing shoesWhile some people just sit around and complain about unemployment, Mr James Malaka, a father of six from Ha-Kutama-Manavhela, is trying to make sure he will never go to bed hun-gry. Malaka is a shoemaker, and from his little workshop in Makhado he specializes in return-ing old shoes to their former glory and beauty.

“I was working for a mining company at the Reef before I resigned and started following my dreams in 1984. I decided to open my own shoe repair shop. I didn’t want to depend on someone else for my income any more,” Malaka explains.

He says he realised there was money to be made in the shoe business and that it wiould help him maintain his family. “It was important to me to be successful in my business, so I decided to invest my savings into it and bought a shoe varnishing machine,” he said.

He says he manages to make an honest living. “I am also proud to say that I never overcharge my customers,” he says.

“Most of my customers come from faraway places such as Nzhelele, Elim and Sinthumule/Kutama. I have quite a lot of regular customers who depend on me time and again,” he says. He says

he currently has one employee who assists him, but he wants to employ two more people to help him on busy days. “Job creation in my community is very important to me,” he adds.

He has huge dreams for his future, the biggest one being to own a large shoe repair franchise in the province,

enabling him to offer many local people work.

Malaka encourages young people to try and do something for them-selves. “Be proud of what you are doing. Don’t be ashamed of yourself and stay away from substance abuse,” he says.

Nkateko Makondo (17), a Grade 11 pupil from Khanyisa Education Centre in Giyani, spent a week at the Limpopo Mirror newsroom to learn the fundamentals of journalism. She was shadowing journalists and she also attended newsroom meetings. She said the experience was well worth the time and very rewarding. “It was worth coming here. I enjoyed and learnt a lot. Now I know what to expect if I consider journalism to be my career,” she said.

Mr Phineus Magwaba recently decided to honour the late Chief Joseph Mbulaheni Matsila. He said the late chief supported him by paying his school and college fees. The Department of Transport in Limpopo has expelled three students who were training at the department's college at Manenu in Mutale.

According to the spokes-person, Mr Jimmy Mathole, the students were expelled on Monday, 7 July, “after they failed to comply with one of the most important requirements that are needed to be admitted to the college.”

He confirmed that the internal affairs division had arrested a student for fraud. “The student was arrested and expelled from the college after he allegedly presented a falsified Grade 12 certificate. Investigators from the department's internal affairs division arrested him and a case of fraud was opened at Mutale police station," said Mathole.

Mathole added that two other students were expelled for not having matric certificates. “The two were disqualified because they submitted a General Ed-ucation and Training certifi-cate, which is not equivalent to matric and did not reach the specific scores which are similar to Grade 12. As such, they did not qualify to be part of the programme and should also not have been shortlisted in the first place. “The depart-ment appointed 250 learner traffic officials who are currently training at Manenu College. All the appointed learner traffic officers had to comply with requirements as set out in the advertisement.” He emphasised their medical fitness, possession of a driver's licence, Grade 12 certificate and no criminal re-

cord. All the shortlisted applica-tions were called for interviews and later appointed as per the recommendations of the panel.

He also stated that successful applicants were further advised that their appointments were subject to screening and ver-ification of their personal and academic qualifications.

"It should be noted the pro-cess of verification of the stu-dents academic information took place while they were busy with their training and it was lat-er discovered the three students were not supposed to be part of the programme.

Mutale police spokesperson WO Tshilidzi Nyambeni con-firmed that a case was opened at the station and a suspect, Mpho Khangale, had already appeared in court.

Ritual murders in spotlight during summit

Astronomy Club to participate in NSW

In custody for selling fake matric certificate

Following high incidents of suspected ritual murder cases in the district, the Vhembe District Municipality and the University of Venda are staging an anti-ritual-murder summit today (Friday).

According to Vhembe spokes-person Mr Matodzi Ralushai, the summit will be held at PorscheVilla Hotel, Muledane, outside Thohoyandou.

The police, justice department, traditional leaders, traditional

healers, businesspeople, the reli-gious community and journalists will attend the event. It will start at 09:00.

Ralushai said the summit was organized as a way of finding a solution to the ritual killings that have been happening in the district. Recently, Mercy Ndou’s mutilated body was found dumped in the bush at Tshitavha village. Several body parts were missing and two peo-ple, Desmond Nemushungwa

(29) and Nelson Baloyi (48), were arrested for this crime.

Other suspected ritual murder victims were also found at Mbil-wi, Makonde and Tshiulungoma.

A few years ago, a summit about witchcraft was staged in Vhembe, following a high num-ber of incidents of people who were killed while being suspected of being witches. After the event, the incidents of witch-craft at-tacks decreased dramatically in the area.

Two people have been arrested for allegedly selling a fake mat-ric certificate.

Police spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelo confirmed that they had arrested a man and a woman on Friday morn-ing, following a tip-off from a community member. “We were informed by a reliable source

that two suspects were about to sell a fake matric certificate to a 16-year-old girl for R4 000 in Sibasa. Apparently, they became suspicious and moved from Sibasa to Thohoyandou. After they had exchanged money with the victim in Thohoyandou, we arrested them,” he added.

Malelo also confirmed that

the suspects, Nkhangweleni Mulaudzi (35) and Tshisamphiri Albert Thagwana (40), appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and the case has been postponed to 29 July. They are in custody. He also revealed that investigators are busy checking if the suspects were involved in similar cases.

Jiwa released after serving only a year“Thank God,” was the remark of convicted Yahya Shoeb Jiwa, after he was released from jail.

The 46-year-old Jiwa from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has rejoined his family after he served more than a year of his four-year-long jail sentence. He was released under correctional supervision after he had brought an application.

A considerably greyer Jiwa appeared in foot cuffs in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court last Friday to bring his appli-cation, which entailed a whole binder file.

Jiwa was sentenced to four years in jail on 21 June last year, after he had pleaded guilty to charges relating to the illegal purchasing and possession of rhino horns. He was arrested during February 2011, following a police trap that was set by the South African National Parks’ Environmental Crime Investiga-tion Unit and the police’s special investigation unit, the Hawks.

As part of Jiwa’s jail sentence the amount of R80 000, which was seized by the police during his arrest, was forfeited to the State. The money was paid to the anti-poaching team of the KNP to aid in the war against rhino poaching.

Following his conviction, Jiwa appealed his sentence twice, and pleaded for correc-tional supervision; once during

his trail and a second application during September last year.

On both occasions, presi-ding magistrate Pat Cloete was adamant that the effectiveness of correctional supervision in South Africa was almost non-existent.

After hearing Jiwa’s appli-cation last week, Cloete told Jiwa that he could not ignore prison reports that he was a good prisoner and seemed to be truly rehabilitated. Cloetesternly warned Jiwa, however, that his supervision came with strict conditions. Jiwa, who served his sentence at the Makhado Correctional Service centre, has to report frequently to the centre until 20 June 2017, when his supervision period will ex-pire. During this time, Jiwa is allowed to be employed or have a business of his own. He may not consume alcohol or drugs in public and may also not leave Makhado (Louis Trichardt) without the permission of Cor-rectional Services.

After a silence of eight years, Olga Siphei is back with her second album, Mudzimuwa Madembe.

She said her debut album, Zwonaka Music, was part of her lifestyle of praising God. She started her musical career when she was only 12 years old and she was a member of the congregation of Pentecostal Holiness Church in Magau.

She grew up listening to famous musicians lsuch as Rebecca Malope and Joyous Celebration and she said she drew inspiration from them. “Recording the new album was not easy,” said Olga. Despite having plenty of songs available, she had to fund the project herself. In order to enhance her music skills, she took piano lessons. “Rapson Rambuwani is my role model, and I fell in love with gospel music because of Rapson’s encouragement,” she added. She said that although the album was self-marketed, many copies had already been sold since its release and had been receiving a lot of airplay from different radio stations around the country.

According to music critics, she is gaining great popularity among gospel music lovers because of her unique style, which consists of heavy bass sounds. She sings about personal experiences, “and what I see happening in my vicinity”.

The new album consists of eight gospel songs, with the favourites being Mbiluyanga, Vhuhwavho and the title track, Mudzimuwa Madembe.

“This book acknowledges that true liberation has not yet been attained in six human agencies, namely the family, learning institution, workplace, church, community and political or-ganisation”.

This striking statement forms part of the blurb on fi rst-time author Bridget Mugivhi-Ramaite’s recently published book, My Dream Land – The Land of True Liberation.

On reading the text, a reader will de-duce that the writer holds an entrenched view that there are people who are still being held in bondage by the popular belief of following the masses, even if it means getting into dirty situations or entrapments. She dreams of a land “where people are spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, socially and economically liberated”.

The book has two parts: Part 1 is di-vided into six, well-crafted chapters on the family unit, learning institutions, the workplace, the church, and community and political organisations. The author starts by inviting the reader to fi nd out the

true meaning of the family, and points the reader to a number of questions regarding dysfunctional family units.

“Why do we have family members living under the same roof who can’t even talk to one another?” she asks in her book.

Mugivhi-Ramaite points out that there are both family behavioural factors and outside behavioural factors which con-tribute to acts of violence - a subject that has become very topical in the country.

“Whenever there are oppressive forces such as rape, child abuse, domestic vio-lence, divorce, theft, murder, corruption and others, we need to check if families are playing their God-given role in shap-ing humanity,” she writes.

She believes that people don’t have to wear masks to conform to social, cultural and religious constructs.

“They have got to be true to themselves and freely transform those constructs which don’t serve their God-given pur-pose in life,” she said.

I have to say that this book is by no means a religious manual or pamphlet. People from across all religious and

cultural backgrounds will fi nd this book readable and accessible, as it tackles the issues which affect us all in everyday life, irrespective of our religious affl iation. The text is poetic, concise and straight-forward.

The author started her career in the nursing fi eld. She is currently a social worker and spiritual development prac-titioner who provides holistic human development services through consulting and training facilitation. She runs her private offi ce in Thohoyandou. So far, her practical experience in the health, psycho-social and spiritual development fi elds spans 33 years.

A reader, Thakhani Mudau, said: “This book brings a breath of fresh air into our time where young men forget about their responsibility as (young) fathers.”

Reviewing a book like My Dream Land – The Land of True Liberation is not an easy task because of the limited space available. The best thing is for the reader to go out and buy this book and read it

The community of Nancefield in Musina is reel-ing with shock and disgust after a six-year-old girl was raped, allegedly by her Zimbabwean stepfather, two weeks ago.

The 24-year-old suspect, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, allegedly lured the child into the bushes and raped her. While he was allegedly busy raping the child, members of the community noticed him and alerted the police, who then responded promptly.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, the child was taken to Musina Hospital for examination and pos-sible medical attention. “The doctor confirmed that she had been raped,” said Ramagwede.

Ramagwede added that the suspect appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court and the case was postponed to 28 July. The suspect remains in custody.

Clever Thonifho an example for pupilsThonifho Madzebe's 21st birthday and gradu-ation celebration were used as a motivational platform to motivate the youth to take their education seriously.

Madzebe, from Makwarela, recently completed her quantity-surveying degree at the Durban Uni-versity of Technology and turned 21 this month.

Speakers at the ceremony held at The Dam Re-treat Lodge at Maniini praised Madzebe for having achieved academically “and not having brought back a baby from university.” The occasion was attended by the founder of The Living Gospel World Mission Church, Dr Maswole Ragimana, and many distinguished guests.

Pastor Samuel Madzebe, who also heads a branch of the Living Gospel World Mission Church at Dididi, said he had brought all the youths from his branch, so that they could be motivated. "This is my last-born child in the family. I have done all to make sure that all our children get the best education. Now that I no longer have no biological children to look after, I have taken all these children as mine. I have to see that they are all educated and helped to improve their living conditions and those of their families," he said, referring to the youths from his church.

He said his daughter made them very proud and that was the reason why he wanted others to learn from her and not just make a celebration where others would not learn anything.

Pastor Rembuluwani Kharivhe urged all youths to emulate and follow the example set by Thonifho Madzebe. "There is nothing better that could liber-ate one from the bondage of financial poverty and poverty of the mind than education. Thonifho did the right thing. She chose to seek education first and what we can tell her is that, as she is educated, she must not forget that what comes first is God and her family," he said.

Tshilamusi Super Eagles won the fourth Bilisi Soccer Festival at Ha-Tshenzhelani outside Masisi a fortnight ago.

According to the organisers, the event is aimed at building social cohesion and community develop-ment through sport and also focuses on empowering the youth. Officials of the National Youth Devel-opment Agency (NYDA) attended the event and interacted with the young people.

More than 500 people attended the festival. The most entertaining game was between the Madimbo base of the SANDF and the Byrne Squad, a team that consisted of soccer veterans from villages surrounding Masisi under the leadership of Piet “Byrne” Siwada. This match was not part of the tournament, but was the curtain raiser for the final.

A total of 18 teams participated in the tourna-ment. The final game was on Sunday between Super Eagles and Diitele FC from Tshilamusi and Tshenzhelani village respectively. Tshilamusi Super Eagles won the tournament after beating Tshenzhelani Diitele on penalties. They received R3 500 and Diitele the second prize of R2 500.

Chief praises organisation that cares

Far North’s coordinator, Ms Evelyn Mathobo (kneeling), hands over some of the goodies to Thovhele Mavhina Samuel Mahwasane during the ceremony.

Thovhele Vho-Samuel Mavhi-na Mahwasane of Muledane outside Thohoyandou praised the good work that Far North Community Care and De-velopment is doing in his community.

Mahwasane was speaking on Sunday when the organization handed over food hampers to identified needy families. The hampers comprised a 25kg bag of mielie meal, tinned food

such as fish and beans, cooking oil and other groceries, enough to provide for a family for two months.

The handing over was done at the Mahwasane traditional offices.

“We have so many organi-zations around the country, but most of them are for self-en-richment, with nothing going to the disadvantaged members of the community. It is rare to

find an organization like this one operating in villages and doing so much for our communities,” he added.

The coordinatior of Far North Community Care and Develop-ment, Ms Evelyn Mathobo, said there was no once-off Mandela Day of goodwill.“We are in the forefront of the struggle for a better life for all, especially the less advantaged in the commu-nity,” she said.

During his address, Mphephu said that investors are fl ocking to Vhembe because of the efforts performed by men like Mureri; who have never taken a break in the economic development of the country. "We are proud of these entrepreneurs because they place

our Vhembe district on the world map,” he added.

“There is no use in singing praises before somebody’s coffi n instead of praising them when they are still alive. Looking at where he started from, there is no doubt that this man is a true example of hard work who wants to show us that everything is possible. His humble beginnings are an inspiration to the disadvantaged communities because he successfully displayed that it is possible to achieve suc-cess, although he comes from a very poor background.

We strongly condemn fly-by-night businesses who rob people of their hard-earned cash. If there is something that business people do not understand clearly, it is the importance of seeking advice from experienced people who are not giving people raw deals. We still have a huge challenge to teach our people that they must invest with people who have the correct moral values, such as Mureri.”

He encouraged business peo-ple to plough back into their communities and assist in the

development of the rural areas.Mr David Mureri said that

he owes his success to all the people who made him what he is today. Mureri has tried his hand at different initiatives while trying to experiment in life. “I told myself that I would not die doing such heavy work because I am the master of my own destiny.” He added that it was under diffi cult condi-tions that he had started the company 18 years ago. “Had it not been for God’s strength and power we could not have achieved anything!” In 2008 Mureri started the Freely Give

and Freely Receive Ministry. He said that he had committed himself to taking ten pastors and their spouses per year to different fi ve-star hotel around South Africa. Mureri said that his ministry was to donate holidays to various pastors by 2048, and that nearly 19 jobs had been created by this initiative.

Mureri expressed his ap-preciation to the pastors who always pray for him. “It is through those pastors who always pray for me that even those people who do not know me also support me!”

Dr Maxwell Masakona of Calvary Christian Church said that Mureri is a Christian and a fi nancial plan-ner, but he also travels around the country, motivating companies and churches on the subject of giv-ing. He is a successful businessman who has won more than 50 awards in the insurance industry.

Archbishop Elias Miriri of the UAAC said that he was proud of what David Mureri had done for the community and the success that he has achieved in business. “Our people must be taught that there is nothing wrong with visiting a bro-ker like Mureri.” He further added that he would furthermore like to encourage Mureri to work closely with traditional leaders.

“A man becomes a product of his thoughts”, was the remark of Dr Handel Leslie, who said that it was an honour that God had given peo-ple a gift in the form of Mr David Mureri.

Dr Leslie praised Mureri for his loving caring spirit and for the way in which he gave to the needy. He said that God would bless Mureri and his company, a name that was so famous everywhere. Mr Russell Atwell from Phakhama adminis-trators said that Mureri was doing a good job that was worth emulat-ing. “The job you are doing for our people cannot just go unnoticed. If there were many business people doing what you are doing for the community, this country would be

a better place to live in.” Atwell concluded that it was very rare for big business to think of assisting the communities in which they do their business, since most just looked at the profi ts. Reri’s Insurance Brokers is an example of how all businesses should be conducting themselves in their respective communities.

David Mureri is now the owner of Reri’s Giving Ministries which is the Giving Wing of Reri’s Insurance Brokers.

In 2010/2011 David Mureri gave the Department Of Education in Vhembe District R340 000 for their Excellence Awards. A cheque of R325 000 was awarded to Vhembe District towards their Excellence Awards for 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Community wants own police station

Fed-up residents of Shayandima march through the streets to the local satellite police station to register their dissatisfaction with poor police service.

The signing of the memorandum. From left to right in our photo are Ms Josephine Tshivhase, Mr Thifhelimbilu Tshishonga, Col Wilson Mashaba and Mr Lithole.

In a march that has never been seen before in Shayandima, hundreds of residents came in their numbers on Saturday to protest about the acts of criminality in their area and the lack of police commitment to work together with the community in getting rid of crime in the area.

The march, organized by the local Sanco, start-ed at the Christ Worship House and proceeded through the main street to the local satellite police station, where a memorandum detailing their grievances was handed over. The memorandum is to be handed over to the SAPS in Thohoyandou, the MEC for Safety and Security and the provin-cial police commissioner. They were given 21 working days to respond.

The march, which was led by former member of parliament Ms Josephine Tshivhase and leaders of structures in the township, was peaceful and characterised by the singing of freedom songs. Local Sanco chairperson Mr Alpheus Tshishonga said they had decided to hold the peaceful march as a way of registering their frustration about the service they were getting from the police in the area.

“The local police have been turning a blind eye and ignoring the concerns of the residents, despite assurances by the station commissioner and joint resolutions taken during meetings with them. Not a single resolution taken with the police has been implemeted and residents continue to be on the receiving end of poor service,” he added.

“We are now call-ing on the authorities to see to it that those police members not working for the ben-efit of the community be transferred to ar-eas where they would use State resources for their own benefit,” he said.

Tshishonga said most of the crimes

in Shayandima were planned and that they had handed names of suspects to the police, who did not act. “We are worried that the suspects are still roaming the streets and we now demand that they be arrested and prosecuted,” said Tshishonga.

He also complained of many unresolved cases in the area and the lack of police visibility. Ac-cording to him, the relationship between the police and the residents has soured because the police are not willing to help the residents. Residents are also demanding their own full-fledged police station where there would be police officers at all times.

Ms Tshivhase said they were there as a way of showing disatisfaction with crime and the way it was being handled in the area. “This is not the Shayandima we used to know. There is a lot of crime in the area and the issue of the free flow of drugs in the area is a source of much concern,” she added.

In receiving the memorandum, Col Wilson Mashaba, detective commander at Thohoyandou, said he was happy the residents had conducted themselves in an orderly and peaceful way. “We promise you that the memorandum you gave us today will reach the right people by Monday, where it will receive the neccessary attention.”

He told residents that he was prepared to work with them at any time and that they could contact him at any given time.

Youth company partners with radio stationHistory was made when Makhado FM and NedMedia signed a memorandum of un-derstanding, which will see the station garnering more ad-vertisers and help improve the clientele of local entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The two parties entered into an agreement on Monday.

According to Ms Ndingoho Nedohe, communications and media manager of NedMedia, a youth-owned company which seeks to empower both young and small businesses, this is a first in Vhembe and Limpopo. A partnership between the radio station and NedMedia wil l see the radio station get-ting more advertisers and businesses in the Vhembe region being exposed to opportunities available to them. “All these businesses will be given a platform to exhibit their businesses during the expo which the partners will host for small businesses,” Nedohe said. “We are in a better position to secure advertisers who will do advert placement on Makhado FM, which will also boost the radio station’s funds.”

The two partners are planning to host the very first entrepreneur-ship and small business expo ever in the district. It will take place at the

Makhado show grounds on 10 and 11 October.

NedMedia came up with the idea of signing an agreement with the radio station and creating a platform of interaction among small businesses after realising that there was a communication gap and a lack of information on how entrepreneurs can get infor-mation to start their businesses, access funding opportunities available to them and sustain those businesses.

“There was no central hub of information of businesses and their services available,” Nedohe

said.The station manager at Makha-

do FM, Mr Makonde Mbedzi, said that the relationship be-tween the two parties would help the radio station to reach its target market, businesses and consumers. “We are a not-for-profit community radio station with a mandate to foster social improvement and community development by bringing in-formation, entertainment and educational programmes to the community though our radio channel and outreach activities,” he said.

Makhado FM’s Mr Makonde Mbedzi and NedMedia’s Mr Mulalo Nedohe shake hands after signing a memorandum of understanding.

Respected community leader laid to restHundreds of people gathered at the small village of Matsila on Saturday to pay their last respects to the late Muofhe Florah Mashamba (90) who died last Sunday after a long illness.

She was one of the founders of the Matsila De-velopment Trust.

Scores of mourners, including Minister of Public Services and Administration Collins Chabane, Thovhele Vho-Mbangiseni Masia, Chief Livhu-wani Masia and community members, attended the funeral.

Although the atmosphere was subdued, the ceremony resembled a celebration of a life well lived and, according to everyone who knew her, Vho-Florah fully dedicated her life to the Lord.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila described her as a pio-neer, a born leader and a woman of vision. He said the whole community gathered with heavy hearts because she had been influential in the area. The royal family, family and community were in great pain after losing one of their respected beloved.

Family members carry the coffin of the late Florah Mashamba.

The late Florah Mashamba was laid to rest. Her son, Mr Norman

Mashamba, described his mother as “an an-gel who brought up her children with love and affection. We wipe our tears, because we know that she served the Lord every minute of her life. God has done his will and ours is to accept,” he added. Mashamba also mentioned that his mother had been a ded-icated member of the Swiss Mission Church and that the church had undergone a positive metamorphosis because of her.

T h e l a t e M r s Mashamba had seven children, six of whom are still alive.

Four Gauteng fire victims buried at TshinoThe Makhado councillor in the Vuwani area, Cllr Mapule Hlabioa, has urged churches and pastors to continue praying for the last surviving member of the Ratsimbi family, who lost four members in a fire last week.

The family members of Tshi-no in the Vuwani area died in a fire in Gauteng last week. The deceased are Mr Sakiel Ratsimbi (27), the father, children Patricia (3), Orilia (5) and Sakiel (7). The mother of the children, Ms Mulalo Ratsimbi, was the sole survivor of the inferno.

The four were buried during an emotional funeral service, held at the family homestead, that later proceeded to the local cemetery.

The funeral was attended by many members of the community structures, including the Nesen-gani Pastor’s Forum, which took a leading role in the preparations and the burial.

“This is the first of such inci-dents during my term as coun-cillor in this area. The worst part of it is that I knew the victims, especially the mother, who is very close to me,” said Hlabiwa, who was close to tears. She urged the family to accept what had happened and to try and move on with their lives.

“Let’s stop talking bad things about the incident and concen-trate on praying for the good of the last surviving member of the family, Mulalo. She needs our

support, and I therefore urge all churches and pastors to remem-ber Mulalo in their prayers,” she said.

Ms Evelyn Managa, the prin-cipal of Mpheni Primary School, where the children attended school, said it was sad to have lost so many people in one inci-dent. “Mulalo came just before the closing of the school to ask for the kids to be released as they used to visit Gauteng each quarter. Little did we know that it was going to be the last time we would see the children alive. We only heard the bad news and this is very sad because Sakiel had attained very high marks in his half-year exams. We have lost bright leaders-to-be,” she said.

Bishop Elijar Maltjie leads the pall bearers to the cemetery at Tshino.

Mulalo Ratsimbi, who survived the fire which killed four of her family members, is being comforted by family members during the funeral.

Vusi and Hedges Mathebula walk out of the new house with dignity.

The old house where the siblings lived.

Ministries and partners present house to orphansTwo siblings who lost their parents some years ago received a gift of a house from the Don't Blame God International Ministries and part-

ners on Saturday.Hedges Mathebula (18) and Vusi

Mathebula (24) couldn't believe it when representatives from the min-

istries, the Department of Correctional Services, Build It Njhaka-Njhaka and Munghana Lonene handed them the key of their new three-room house in honour of the late Mr Nelson Mandela.

Don't Blame God International Ministries' Bish-op Erasmas Malungani said that he had learnt about the two young men's heartbreaking situation and visited them at their home. He found that they were living in a rondavel which was also falling apart. "I felt that I had no option but try to help them,” said Bishop Malungani. “In the successive years, people had got RDP houses built for them many times, but the siblings were not being considered by the relevant bodies. They had no food, no clothes and their rondavel was falling apart.”

He requested Munghana Lonene to give him airtime to speak to the nation and ask donations, but his church responded and contributed the little they could afford. “There were also contributions from individuals and companies such as Ribisi Electrical, who bought bricks,” said Malungani.

Malungani said he was happy that the siblings had finally received a proper house.

The house was built by a group of ten parolees and their probation officers. The head of com-munity corrections in the Thohoyandou Area Management, Mr Farisani Mulaudzi, said that the Department of Correctional Services would continue to get involved in projects which helped better the lives of community members.

“Parolees do community service work free of charge in the communities as a way of contributing back to communities,” Mulaudzi said. “It's good to see these two young men, who were robbed of an opportunity to have a proper shelter because they had no guardians, having a place to call home today.”

A Limpopo-based kwasa-kwasa musician, Malo A Botshiba, bought new furniture and electrical appliances for the siblings. They included, among other articles, a refrigerator, stove, portable radio, and a mobile phone. “Vusi and Hedges are our children and we need to look after them,” said Malo A Botshiba.

“It's not the first time that I am helping out. I also request the government to check if the people whom they give government tenders are giving back to communities or not. People must donate to people where they know that they expect nothing in return.”

The excited siblings thanked all those who contributed to building their house and in making sure that their livehoods were improved. “We are without words; but we also feel accepted and loved by all these people who choose to become our parents and relatives,” said Hedges.

Neo Lebelo of Young Tigers hooks the ball.

Luca Mogashoa of Young Tigers (right) and Thato Mahlakwana of Arsenal fight to win the ball.

A goal by Jerry Seabi in the 29th minute was good enough to give Boyne Young Tigers three vital points at the expense of Sekhu-khune Arsenal in their SAB League promotional play-off match at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday.

The game was equally contested from the onset. The referee, Mr Jelly Chavani, gave Release Monama a tongue lashing in the ninth minute. Monama ignored the referee’s whis-tle and kicked the ball away long after the whistle had been blown for an offside.

Arsenal had their first regret in the 14th minute. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The free kick led to a heartbreaking scramble within the box, but Sello Makena shot wide from inside the box. His team’s fans did not forgive

him for the blunder he committed as they continued to boo at him throughout the game.

Boyne Young Tigers refused to die in the 24th minute. This after the Arsenal striker, Petrus Makola, tried his luck from the 25-meter area. The ball did not have enough power and a defender of Tigers, Frank Matheb-ula, cleared it from the goal line. The goal that earned Young Tigers three vital points was the product of good communication between the mid-fielders and the strikers. Although both sides effected some changes later in the last half, the complexion of the game did not change.

Boyne Young Tigers lost 0-1 to A1 Terrors in their deciding game later that afternoon, the result which saw Terrors together with the log leaders, Bilika All Stars, gain pro-motion to the Safa Second Division.

Three points for Boyne Tigers

Madco Tournament

United through to the fi nal

Celtic overpower Madombidzha FC in semi-fi nal

Madombidzha United went through to the fi nal of the Madco tourna-ment after beating Madombidzha Terrors 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out at Madombidzha on Sunday. After normal time, the game was still locked in a 0-0 draw.

Terror approached the match like a house on fi re, with their midfi elders distributing telling passes to their strikers. They threatened to score early into the match when Maduvhi Mukwevho forced his way through the defence of United before passing

the ball to Makgetsi Thulare. His attempt, however, missed the target by inches.

The second half saw United press-ing hard in search of goals, but they failed to break the rock-solid defence of Terrors.

Terrors later abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

Players who went into the referees book for different infringements were Rapelani Leaka and Andani Phathela of United.

Rapelani Leaka of United beats Mokgetsi Thulare.

Isaac Mulaudzi of Celtic controls the ball, while Thabo Matuba is running for cover.

Dakalo Nwanamidwa of Celtic attacks the ball, with Thabo Mamburu on his heels, waiting for any mistake.

Madombidzha Celtic beat Madombidzha FC 3-2 in the semifi nal of the Madco tour-nament at Madombidzha on Sunday.

There was a spirit of com-mitment from both sides throughout the game. Celtic were intimidated by a yellow card that was fl ashed to their defender, Rudzani Lisoga, in the 15th minute. The keeper of FC, Hector Malange, caused an upset when he failed to handle the ball properly. The ball hit his knees and bounced back into play. Dakalo Nwana-midwa was in a perfect scoring posision to tap in the ball.

FC did not press the panic button, despite the fact that their fans were becoming impatient. Their equalising goal came in the 34th minute. Captain Thabo Matuba scored after a corner kick by Masala Tshinanga. They had very little time to celebrate their equalis-er, as Celtic found their second

goal in the 40th minute via Musubi Mushukwa.

Isaac Mulaudzi and Dakalo Nwanamidwa formed a deadly combination with Sukanani Netshukwi at the forefront and kept the FC defence running for cover. Although both sides had missed a number of chances, FC had more regrets, especially after the introduc-tion of their killer striker, Thabo Mamburu, late in the second half.

The game nearly took an ugly turn when the players of both teams started to display rough skills. The situation was calmed by the referee, who fl ashed three yellow cards in quick succession.

Dakalo Nwanamidwa com-plete his brace and scored his team third goal. Tshimanga-dzo Masala scored his team second goal to make the score 3-2.

Humiliating defeat for Young SantosAfter sharing the spoils with A1 Terrors in their opening match earlier that day, Mukula Young Santos lost 0-2 to Boyne Young Tigers in their SAB League provincial play-off match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Just like in their other three matches, Young Santos squan-dered numerous scoring oppor-tunities, making the result a false reflection of the game.

It took the referee, Mr Quality Kgapane, nine minutes to flash the first yellow card. Russel Moremi of Young Ti-gers obstructed Tshilis-anani Phalanndwa just outside the box.

Young Santos missed a fortune in the 19th minute. Their centre forward, Christopher Tshikovhele, could not believe his eyes when his volley hit the wood-work and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

As if that was not enough to upset the team’s enthusiastic fans, Jacob Ramudzuli caused another upset six minutes thereafter. His close-range ground cutter missed the goal mouth by inches. Boyne Young Tigers gained momentum with time. They took the lead in the 38th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Jerry Seabi, blasted in a rocket from the 25-me-

ter area.Young Santos came close

to scoring again three minutes before the break. Tshilisanani Phalanndwa unleashed from the left corner, but the ball crossed to the other end as there was no one inside the box to give it the final touch.

Boyne United were still one goal up when the teams ad-journed for half time.

Joshua Netshilindi of Young Santos was also booked for an unlawful tackle. He tackled Jan Tleane from behind in the

64th minute. Young Santos re-placed Edzisani Makhuvha and Khaukanani Gethe with Vuwani Masakona and Nndateni Netshit-adi respectively. Boyne Young Tigers snatched their second goal in the 80th minute. Ephraim Maboa connected Matekane Madiba’s cross.

Boyne Young Tigers beat Sekhukhune Arsenal 1-0 before losing 0-2 and 0-1 to Bilika All Stars and A1 Terrors respectively in their other three promotional play-off matches played at the same venue.

The first-round matches of the Makhado SuperSpar soccer tour-nament will take place at the Tsh-iozwi grounds on Sunday. Eight teams will participate in the event.

In the first match of the competi-tion, Gogobole Home Defenders will face Muraleni United. The match will start at 10:00. The following match will be between Tshiozwi An-chors and Gogobole Bucs (12:00), while Madombidzha Try Again will face Tshiozwi Mates at 14:00. In the

last match of the day, Makhado Spar FC will meet Madombidzha Poverty (16:00).

The winners of Sunday's matches will participate in the semi-finals and finals on 3 August at the same venue. The champions will receive R3 000, gold medals and a floating trophy, while the runners-up will receive R1 500 and silver medals.

The prize for the thrid place is R700 and bronze medals and the fourth prize is R700.

The dignitaries, club officials and players pose for a photo after the ceremony.

The award-winning players, photographed with the team’s coach, Mr Musiiwa Tshifaro (standing left) and his assistant, Mr Lufuluvhi Mamidze (standing far right).

One of the affiliates for the Thulamela Local Football Association, Sidou Peace Makers, recently celebrated the team’s achievements during a ceremony at the Sidou Conference Centre. Several players and officials were given awards for their outstanding performance and commitment in the past season.

Khathutshelo Mmbengwa received the awards for player of the season and top goal scorer. He scored 22 goals in the 30 league matches the team played. The players’ player of the season award went to Wanga Khorommbi. Shumani Ramaliwa was the recipient of the most

awesome goal scorer award and Tshifhi-wa Nephawe received the young player of the season award. Wanga Mudau was the most disciplined player of the season, while Mukovhe Madzikiti is the player with the most skills. The team’s coach, Mr Musiiwa Tshifaro, and his assistant, Mr Lufuluvhi Mamidze, received the chairman’s award.

During the ceremony, the team’s head coach, Mr Musiiwa Tshifaro, said that most of the players they had registered the previous season were ill-disciplined. He indicated that although they had registered 28 players, it was rare to have more than

13 players available for a match. The team finished the season in the

fifth position. According to Tshifaro, they could have ended in the third spot, had it not been for the fact that they had forfeit-ed a number of points to their opponents through protests. He also mentioned that the team did not stop training after their last league match.

Mr Tshifaro further said that they had achieved all that, despite the fact that the team did not have a sponsor. During the ceremony, the chairman of the club, Mr Maseakhole Sithali, appealed to local businessmen to support the team.

To encourage young stars to play soccer and netball when they are still very young, the Mashau School Soccer and Net-ball Challenge was launched at Vhafamadi High last Friday.

Ten primary and five second-ary schools around Mashau will participate in the competition.

The event will be sponsored by two companies, MI Logistics and Mjayeli Security Services. The manager of the two companies, Mr Pat Madavhu, said that the companies wanted to develop young rural children and keep them busy in a constructive

manner. He added that he was a proud supporter of local football development “and we undertake this sponsorship primarily to showcase our support for the sport and because it would help us to engage with the people of Vhembe.”

He said that Limpopo was a province rich in talent and that he would like to continue to de-velop their relationship with the schools and provide something tangible that people would value. Vhamusanda Vho-Dan Mashau stated that the government could not curb the high rate of unem-

ployment alone. He appealed to the business community to follow in the footsteps of sponsors, saying sport had become a major employment provider of late. He defined sport as a good vehicle to fight unemployment and poverty.

It was announced that the champions of the different di-visions will receive new sports kits, floating trophies and medals. During the launch, new netball and soccer kits were also pre-sented to Vhafamadi High and Mphagane Primary.

The first matches will be played next Wednesday (30th).

Mukula Santos and Stars share the gloryAfter winning their first three matches, Bilika All Stars wrapped up their SAB League provincial promotional play-off matches by sharing the glory with Mukula Young Santos at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday afternoon. They played to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Mukula Young Santos did not lose hope, despite the fact that they were trailing 0-3 at some stage.

Although the nine points they had accumulated in their first three matches were good enough to make them the best team in the tournament, All Stars did not leave anything to chance in their game against Young Santos. They took the game to their oppo-nents from the first whistle, with

their midfielders making sure that their strikers got enough supply from time to time.

The hosts opened their account in the 19th minute after several attempts.

Themba Makondo was on target with a volley. The keep-er of Young Santos, Ronewa Mavhungu, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net. A few minutes later, Referee Given Lekata warned Themba Chauke of All Stars with a card for a late tackle on Robert Baloyi.

All Stars increased the margin in the 29th minute. Japhta Neph-ali beat the Santos keeper with a close-range ground cutter to bring the half-time score to 2-0. All Stars continued to play enter-taining football in the last half.

Their third goal came in the 54th minute when Rito Tshuma scored from the edge of the penalty box.

Mukula Young Santos pulled one back through Jacob Ramud-zuli, who came on as a substitute for Vhahangwele Tshifhango. They were awarded two penalties in quick succession after Vuwani Masakona and Jacob Ramudzuli were brought down within the box in the 67th and 74th minute respectively. Ronewa Mavhungu converted both from the white spot.

Young Santos drew 2-2 with both Sekhukhune Arsenal and A1 Terrors and lost 0-2 to Boyne Young Tigers in their first three matches, two of which were played on Saturday.
