A 43-year-old suspect, Mr Nnditsheni Mafen-ya, who was arrested for allegedly killing his mother last month, was granted bail when he appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday (17th).

Mafenya was, however, sent back to custody after failing to pay the R2 000 bail. The family has described the bail application as vague and a miscarriage of justice.

Mafenya was apprehended shortly after the death of his mother, Ms Rosina Tshamano, last month. He allegedly beat and stabbed her and left her for dead. She was later transferred to the hospital, but died a day after her admission from the immense loss of blood during the incident.

A family member, Mr Lufuno Itani, said that Mafenya told the court that he had a family and children to look after and that he was staying with his spouse in Manieni village outside Tho-hoyandou.

“He is a threat not only to the family, but also to the entire society. If he is released, who knows what similar crimes he may commit,” he said.

Lufuno said the suspect was arrested several times before and released. “We don’t know that he has a family to look after. He was arrested before 1994 for allegedly killing a white man back then, but was released on amnesty,” he said.

He said it was fortunate that Mafenya could not raise the money for his bail. “At least it is a relief to us (family members). We don’t know if he could come back and terrorise our family,” he added.

According to the police, Mafenya did not pay the bail amount and he was sent back to prison. “He will go back to court again next month (July 30),” said Mphephu SAPS spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati.

The Thohoyandou High Court sentenced Lutendo Madume (25) to life imprisonment and two years on charges of murder and kid-napping last Wednesday.

On 8 January 2013, Madume kidnapped a Grade 10 pupil, Tuwani Portia Fhetani (20), when she was on her way from collecting her results from Tshiungulela Secondary School at Tshikwarani village. He stabbed her to death the next morning.

Acting Judge Jackson Mushasha described Madume as a “disrespectful individual” who deserved to be “totally removed from society”.

He added that if the court “does not remove you from the community by sending you to jail for life, the community would also go around killing one another, knowing that the law does nothing to people who commit such crimes.”

Mushasha had established that the victim had died of haemorrhage shock after she had been stabbed at least four times by Madume.

He said that the kind of knife which was used to kill the victim was a unique knife, with the handle in the middle and it was sharp on both sides. He also read out State Adv Ratshilumela Makhera’s submission that the convict was not a first offender, and that the probationer’s report proved that Madume failed to respect his family members as well.

“His mother moved out of the home to stay in another place because he wanted to interfere with her relationship (with his stepfather),” said Mushasha.

When the court imposed sentence on Madume, he wept profusely. He had maintained a plea of not guilty throughout the trial, saying that he didn’t have any idea how Tuwani died.

The director of Munna ndi nnyi (Who is the real man), Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, said that the organisation had been following this case diligently.

“Killing a human being is not allowed,” said Mufunwaini.

“There was a time when the courts released criminals who committed heinuous crimes, and we felt the justice system was betraying members of the community who came forward with infor-mation which assisted the police to arrest those criminals. Now we are happy that justice is doing the right thing. We will continue to encourage people to inform the police of all criminal inci-dents, because the law is doing its duty.”

A period of at least two years without a community leader came to a end in Tshikuwi village at Nzhelele last Friday when a new headman was inaugurated. Headman Kha-thutshelo “Phiri Phiri” Ramal-amula is now at the helm of this community.

The new headman thanked all the people who had influenced him and encouraged him to take his father’s position, as well as the Mphephu Royal Council for trusting him to lead.

He was installed in the pres-ence of other traditional leaders, councillors, community mem-bers, businesspeople and other stakeholders.

Headman Ramalamula prom-ised to follow in the footsteps of his father, who passed away in 2011. When Mr Mukhathoni

Ramalamula died, he left a huge void in the village. “My father was a person who abided by the rules and he led his community peacefully. He was the custodian of the traditions in our communi-ty and very respectful,” he said. He added that he would follow his father’s legacy of ruling the community peacefully. “I will follow in his footsteps and lead by example to ensure peace and cooperation in the community,” he added.

Khotsimunene Vho-Japan Mphephu Ramabulana said any community without a leader was likely to be ungovernable and uncooperative.

He said the king of the vhaV-enda, Vho-Thovhele Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, wanted all his communities to have a leader who would be

his eyes and ears. “We are very grateful that we have installed a new leader today. Community members will now have a place to report their community’s mat-ters,” he said.

The headman was given the name “Phiri-Phiri” by the king of Venda. “Hence I am here today; I have been delegated by Khosikhulu to mark the new reign under a new leader in this community,” he added.

The local ward councillor, Cllr Mbulaheni Magada, said he was grateful that the new leader was finally inaugurated. “We had a challenge as council. We did not know whom to consult when addressing issues of service in the community, but now everything will be fine and we will cooper-ate with him to ensure there is service,” he said.

“I am a normal person - there is no curse on me!”News started spreading the past few months of a man with a cursed pig. The pig was apparently following the man wherever he went and some residents believed it may have been part of an evil spell cast upon the animal.

When Limpopo Mirror followed up on the ru-mours, it turned out that this is nothing more than a man with a very special and loving pet. The story, however, is still worth telling.

A black pig trots proudly after Lawrence Gezani Mhangwani (29) when he walks around his fami-ly’s yard and strolls around the dusty, hilly paths in Mbhokota village, near Elim.

In the village and in social media, people have exchanged images which shows a man of medium height, walking down the road with a pig following him. These images are discussed in buses and taxis, with different speakers commenting that they have even visited Mbhokota to see a man who has been cursed with a black pig.

They said he was a thief, who had stolen from the wrong people who had then retaliated by putting a curse of a pig on him.

“All those who started these rumours are wrong; they are misleading the world,” says Mhangwani. “I am normal. I bought this pig as a piglet last year for R400. I trained it to be sociable. This

pig will soon give birth to piglets which will also follow her as she walks behind me on the road. Now tell me here. What would talkers say about that, eh?”

There has also been a ‘bad’ rumour that the pig follows Mhangwani to the bus stop. When he climbs in a taxi, she remains behind, but once Mhangwani gets off the taxi, be it at Elim or Tzaneen, the black pig materialises and starts following him. “It’s not true,” he says.

Mhangwani’s wife, Ms Ndivhudza Maphala, says she fails to understand why people should spread wrong and negative information about her husband. “This pig also follows me when I leave home,” she says. “Our pig is cute, and she loves people.” Bhuti Chicken Muchavi, a friend of the family, confi rmed that the pig is nothing more than an interesting pet. “People phoned to tell me that my friend was crazy and that he had been cursed

with a pig,” says Chicken. “I decided to check on him. I found that the pig they spoke about was well known to me as his domestic animal.”

Last Wednesday, Chicken requested Mhangwani to re-spond to villagers’ ques-tions about his ‘cursed’ situation and state of mind.

“I wanted him to set the re-cord straight,” says Chicken.

Mudelane road claims another victim

Mureri supports child protection campaignIn an effort to strengthen the relationship with the communities it serves, Reri’s Insurance Company has recently sponsored more than 60 T-shirts and food parcels to be used during a child protection campaign in Goldville near the

Donald Fraser Hospital.“We are investing in the future of our children

as they are future leaders. We donated something to the children as part of our social responsibil-ity,” said Mr David Mureri of Reri’s Insurance Company.

The deputy manager of nursing at the Donald Fraser Hospital, Ms Mzana Lumuka, said the aim of the campaign was to make communities aware of the importance to protect children from abuse such as rape and neglect, as well as the protection of the rights of children. “We can describe Reri’s as the Good Samaritan, who rescued us in our effort to promote the child protection campaign. Our theme with the campaign is Breaking the cycle of child abuse,” said Ms Lumuka.

She added that the hospital also strived to promote a healthy lifestyle among the children and staff.

The Thohoyandou Emergency Medical Ser-vices were dealt a grievous blow, following the untimely death of one of their trusted, beloved and hardworking officers, Mr Elvis Mathaulula.

Mathaulula (36), of Siloam, who worked as a shift manager at the station, died when his vehicle and another collided at the Muledane traffic lights early Friday evening. He died instantly.

Mathaulula was loved by all at work and in the community and was described as a dedicated fam-ily man who also loved people and his work. Ms Tshinakaho Mathaulula, his wife and the mother of his two children, Ngaene (18 months) and Munei (7 years), said his death came as a shock to the whole family. Ms Mathaulula is a member of the SANDF and on special duty in Sudan. She said death had robbed them of a man who loved them all.

“He was dedicated to his family, he loved all people and he was also dedicated to his work. We are greatly saddened by his sudden and tragic passing, but we are just relying on prayers from family members, friends and colleagues,” she said in a telephonic interview.

A memorial service in his honour will be held on Friday at MTG Funerals and it will be followed by his funeral at Siloam on Saturday. Mr Elvis Mathaulula.

Last week the Victim Centre for victims of rape and domestic violence at the Makhado Police station received a welcome donation of six handbags from the Epic Foundation’s Comfort Pack Project. All the handbags contain donated necessities, such as clean underwear and other toiletries, that can be handed to victims reporting at the centre. Local project coordinator Cherise Müller handed over the bags and thanked her friend Maxie, who had helped with the donations. Receiving the handbags were, from left to right, Agnes Rerani (victim supporter), Stephinah Motau (project manager), Cherise and Caroline Mabogo (victim supporter).

For the first time in the history of Limpopo’s Thohoyandou Correctional Centre, more than 700 prisoners were able to view Pres Jacob Zuma’s state-of-the-nation address last Tuesday evening, thanks to the provincial Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), who erected a big screen. The provincial director of GCIS, Mr Thanyani Ravhura, said prisoners were also citizens of South Africa and they had the right to information, regardless of the fact that they were in prison. “We wanted prisoners to get information from Pres Zuma when he outlined his five-year plan of ruling the country,” said Ravhura. In our photo, the area commissioner for the Thohoyandou management area, Dir Richard Malebane, is photographed with Mr Thanyani Ravhura, some prisoners, members of the Limpopo Legislature and councillors after the event. Awards for local young entrepreneurs Rockers in hot water for “daylight witchcraft”The MEC for Economic De-velopment, Environment and Tourism, Mr Seaparo Sekoati, urged young people in the province to make use of oppor-tunities available, so that they can help promote economic development and create jobs for the less fortunate.

He was the guest speaker during the announcement of the winners of a competition for young local entrepreneurs at PorscheVilla hotel near Thohoy-andou on Friday night.

“We want our young entrepre-neurs in the province to support, empower and to invest in the youth who stand up and partic-ipate in the economic develop-ment of our country. We must tackle poverty and unemployment in our communities through agriculture and tour-ism,” Sekoati said.

The p r i zes were awarded in three cate-gories: agriculture, tour-ism and enterprise de-velopment, with R100 000 and a trophy as the first prize in every cat-egory, R50 000 for the second prize and R25 000 for the third prize. The theme of the com-petition was Building vibrant and committed young entrepreneurs in Vhembe District; a sustainable solution to-wards building strong local economic devel-

opment.“We have set aside R45 mil-

lion this financial year to fund and support young people who are ready to change the life of poor people for the better, co-op-eratives and small businesses in the province. We have taken steps in promoting economic development through agriculture, tourism and enterprise and we have earmarked young people to take a lead,” added Sekoati.

The winners are Mashudu Sil-imela (33) in tourism, Rotondwa Nyelisani in agriculture and Pen It Solutions in enterprise devel-opment.

A previous winner and now a successful businesswoman, Ms

Livhuwani Tshifhango, said de-termination and hard work were behind the success of everyone who wanted to do business. She is running a poultry farming proj-ect at Nzhelele-Ha-Ramavhoya village.

One of the winners, Pen It Solutions, is doing printing, information technology, web development and system devel-opment. It is based in Sibasa and run by Mulalo Masisi (27) and Eddie Phaswana (28). “We are seeing a significant growth due to the support from customers in the Vhembe region and beyond. We have created jobs for 27 previously unemployed people,” said Phaswana.

Rockers FC will soon appear before a disciplinary commit-tee of the MMK Funeral Ser-vices League after an incident in the match between Rockers and Mukula Young Santos at the Makwarela Stadium a fortnight ago.

The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation time and the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out. Young Santos eventually won the match 4-2.

According to our reporter at the scene, it was evident from the start that something strange was going to happen as fans of both teams were spotted before and during the game sprinkling what is believed to be muti on the pitch.

The situation took an ugly turn after Young Santos con-verted their first two chances from the penalty spot, with the Rockers’ players shooting wide. An alleged fan of Rockers then advanced onto the pitch with a plastic container with some liquid.

The fan started sprinkling the substance all over the goal area before proceeding to the referee, Mr Jelly Chabani, who was standing at the edge of the penalty box.

He then started to sprinkle the unknown substance around the referee.

Chabani tried to run away in order to avoid the fluid, but it was too late as his head and

face were already wet at that stage. He collapsed on the pitch shortly afterwards, complaining about itching eyes and dizziness and saying he could not see anymore. The paramedics then treated Chabani and the game stopped for about 15 minutes. After receiving medical atten-tion, Chabani allowed Rockers to take their final penalty and Vhonani Munyai’s shot was saved easily. Chabani continued to receive medical attention from the paramedics after the game.

All the football lovers who

were interviewed by Limpopo Mirror on the incident con-demned it in the strongest terms. “That is daylight witchcraft,” said an angry football referee, who wished to remain anony-mous. The chairman of the com-petition’s committee, Mr Muli-misi Muneri, also expressed his disappointment about the incident, saying incidents of that nature brought both the league and the sponsors into disrepute. Muneri told the Lim-popo Mirror that a disciplinary committee would convene soon to investigate the issue.

A dizzy referee, Mr Jelly Chabani, shortly after he was allegedly sprinkled with an unknown substance during the MMK match between Rockers FC and Mukula Young Santos.

“Hand case” to be tried in High Court next January

Elim Hospital receives another hugedonation from Swiss Government

A trial date for Makhado (Louis Trichardt)’s infamous “hand case” has at long last been set.

Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo (38), who stands accused of the murder of Rumbidzai Manyere (36), appeared in the Louis Trichardt Dis-trict Court again on Friday (20th). He is facing two counts of rape and single counts of murder, housebreaking and robbery.

Tshikhudo was accused of raping two victims, after he was arrested for Manyere’s murder in April last year. He allegedly tried to rob the Elti Café in Eltivillas with a severed human

arm. Following his arrest, Tshikhu-do let the police to the place where Manyere’s body was found. Her right arm, both eyes and her private parts had been removed.

The newspaper was able to deter-mine that the police have finalized their case. The State’s list of witness-es, reportedly, consists of more than 50 people. A date has been set for the week of 26 January to 2 February next year, when the High Court will convene here in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court for the trial. Until then, Tshikhudo will remain in custody.

Elim Hospital received medical equipment worth thousands of rands from the Swiss em-bassy last Saturday.

The equipment included electrical beds, exam-ination tables, a radiology screen, filing cabinets, a neonatal intensive care unit ventilator and infrared lamps.

Switzerland’s ambassador, Mr Christian Meu-wly, said that his office understood the importance of maintaining their activities with and continuing to give support to the hospital. The hospital was es-tablished by a Swiss missionary, Dr Georges-Louis Liengme, in 1899.

“Our solidarity with the hospital will help pa-tients to get medical treatment and attention in a way that will benefit society more,” said Meuwly. The relationship between the Swiss embassy and the hospital has seen the hospital receive a donation of medical equipment to the value of R1.4 million in the past two years.

The MEC for Sports, Art and Culture, Ms Nandi Ndelane, said that the department was grateful for the donation. “We are more confident than ever that we are moving South Africa forward,” she said. “Giving the gift of medical equipments to a health facility is simply a life-saving gesture to somebody you don’t know. It is considered the highest form of selfless behaviour.”

Ndelane added that the embassy’s noble gesture would surely change people’s lives when they visited the hospital.

The mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, indicated that the munic-ipality had always had a good relationship with the Department of Health. “In cases where any of our hospitals experience a lack of water, the MEC can make submissions to our office, so that we can drill a borehole to make sure that the lives of our people are not compromised,” he said. “We also thank the Swiss Embassy for such a kind gesture of making donations to our hospital.”

The partner in the donation project, Medi-Clinic, became involved in the transportation of the equipment to South

Africa from Switzerland. “We will also service and install the equipment at the hospital,” said Mr Zane Fanie, CEO at the MediClinic Tzaneen. “I trust that our small contribution will help the doctors and staff of the Elim hospital to further enhance the quality of life of patients and the greater community.”

The Swiss ambassador, Mr Christian Meuwly.

Teenager arrested on murder charge

Top performances in Driver of the Year competition

Lightning kills mother and daughter

A 17-year-old boy from Beit Bridge has been charged with murder, after he allegedly fatally stabbed a fellow pupil with a knife in a scuffle over a girlfriend.

The Musina testing grounds were a hive of thrilling activities as drivers battled for excellence during the Vhembe District Local Driver of the Year com-petition on Saturday.

The drivers competed in four catego-ries, viz. rigid trucks, articulated trucks, light delivery van (LDV) and rigid with trailer.

The spokesperson of Musina Munici-pality, Wilson Dzebu, said the main objec-tive of the competition was to determine the driving skills of drivers. “The annual Driver of the Year contest identifies and honours the best men and women travel-ing the roads today. These are the people who drive safely and enhance the image of drivers on our roads. This competition is very important, because millions of people who use our roads every day deserve safer roads. The competition will also limit the increasing number of avoidable deaths on our roads.” Dzebu said drivers were tested on a public road and also inside the testing ground. “The skills displayed were impressive, and we have no doubt that the the winning drivers will represent Musina well during the district competitions at PR Mphephu Airport in September this year.”

He said the competition improved the

A 31-year-old Beit Bridge woman and her daughter were fatally struck by a bolt of lightning when they sought refuge under a tree during the weekend, the police have said.

Police spokesperson Chief Insp Peter Zhanero said the incident hap-pened on Saturday at around 13:00.

The victims were identified as Ms Junior Dheimani and Rebecca Ma-goche (8) of Gezani village outside Beit Bridge.

When they realised that the thunder was closing up on them, they rushed to a tree. A bolt of lightning suddenly struck the woman and her daughter and they died instantly, Zhanero said.

The boy, a pupil at Tshidixwa Secondary School, was arrested on Saturday and appeared before Magistrate Gloria Takundwa. The juvenile was remanded in custody.

The court was told that on June 6 this year, the juvenile and the deceased, Robert Mudau, were at the school grounds watching a football match and then reportedly started arguing over a girl they both admired. It was stated that an argument over the girl resulted in a fist fight. At the height of the fight, the accused allegedly pulled out an Okapi knife from his pocket and stabbed Mudau in the forehead.

Mudau was then rushed to Beit Bridge District Hospital, where he died upon admission.

“We would like to express gratitude to all the drivers who emerged successful in the competition. We also encourage those who did not win to come and participate again next year.”

Mr Pat Nemaguvhuni, who won the rigid-with-trailer category, said he knew he was going to do it “because I’m a

confident driver who always follows the rules of the road. I have no doubt that I will represent Musina well during the district competitions in September.” The other winners are Ndivhudzannyi Sinyela (rig-id), Phanuel Nemaungani (light delivery van/LDV), Rose Malinda (LDV) and Enos Mudau (articulated).

“Taverns the source of trouble” - police commander Mushavhi is the darling of Musina FM’s airwavesAbout 900 youths from villages in the

Sinthumule and Kutama areas cele-brated Youth Day at the Tshilwavhusi-ku police station’s grounds a week ago.

The activities of the day included cul-tural dances and western dances, poetry recitals, choirs and speech presentations by local leaders and the representative from the local police station.

A youth developer and recording studio-owner, Mr Balcan Sikhwari, warned the youth about the dangers of getting involved in gangs. He explained that there are situations at school where pupils become embroiled in fights about trivial matters, calling on their friends to assist them.

“That’s gangsterism, and it’s very bad because you end up severely injuring and killing one another,” he said. “In doing that, you are by no means moving South

Africa forward. Don’t do things which move South Africa backward.”

He added that prisons were filled to capacity with young people and wanted to know if the youth of the1976 uprising would be happy to see today’s youths going to prison because of misbehaviour. “If those youths were to wake up and see what is happening now, would they smile and say, ‘Yes, this is what we fought for’?” he asked.

He then urged the youths to get in-volved in recreational and sports activi-ties during their free time.

The station commander, Lt-Col Freddy Shirinda, informed the youths that the station had earmarked certain taverns in the policing areas where heinous crimes were being committed. “Murders and rapes happen while people are in or from these taverns, but youths still go there,”

he said. “Stop going to taverns! However, as the police, we’ll continue to do our work effectively.”

He added that ladies must also stop their habits of going to a shebeen or tavern when they surely know that they don’t have money to buy beer. “Whose money are you going to use once you get to the tavern?” he asked. “You drink with men’s money and the next thing, they stab you to death when you refuse to go with them.”

Young poet and speech writer Lethokuhle Mpilo (14) said that she had enjoyed participating in the activities of the day. She then recited a striking part of a poem, where her voice rose and echoed with each word coming from her mouth. “I came here to commemorate Youth Day with my peers,” she said. “But I also learnt a lot from different speakers.”

Vuledzani Pilani will never forget the 13th day of December 2010 when he accompanied his presenter friend to the studios of Musina FM.

“My friend suddenly had an emer-gency and there was no one to con-tinue with his show immediately. He then showed me how to play contin-uous songs until a replacement was found 30 minutes later. I continued to sit in the studio while tmy friend’s replacement was presenting as I was also assisting him to operate the machines. That is how my love for radio developed and the rest is now history.”

Today Pilani, widely known as Mushavhi by his fans, is the darling of the airwaves to the listeners of Musina FM. He presents Tsumbavhuyo from at 12:00 to 13:00 on weekdays. The programme tackles current political issues and issues relating to service delivery. “The programme requires skills which, even in the preparation of capsule news, are additional to the investigative and literary abilities that I possess.”

A staunch member of the Jesus for the Poor in Spirit (JPS) Church, Mushavhi also presents Kha ri li

suke every Sunday. “The programme tackles issues about the Christian re-ligion and how people can overcome the influence of Satan. I also invite pastors who come and preach. I play anointing gospel music and interview gospel artists in order to promote their music. Each time I open the telephone lines, people call in large numbers to show that they are interested in my show.”

Born and bred at Thengwe Mapate, Mushavhi came to Musina to work as a debt collector in 2010. “I fell so deeply in love with radio that I decided to put my debt collector job on hold. I’m now into radio full time. Radio connects me with different community members, and I learn new things daily.”

He says his future plan is to see himself in one of the mainstream radio stations in the near future.

His message to those who want to follow a career in radio is: “The im-portance of radio rests on something other than the fact that it is more demanding and skilful than might be supposed. One must be ready to work hard and be willing to learn new skills daily.”

Recording poet BornWise performed during the event.

Former Univen presenter now a legal guru

JPS Ministries hold Youth Day parade

A former radio presenter at Univen FM, Ms Elelwani Makhuvha, is leaving her mark in the legal fraternity. Even though she has been in the business of law and justice for less than half a decade, Ms Makhuvha has started to pave her way, and she is trying hard to ensure that justice prevails.

Hundreds of young people from Musina celebrated Youth Day under the banner of Jesus for the Poor in Spirit Inter-national Ministries (JPS) on 16 June.

Led by a well-known lawyer, Adv Bishop Edward Pesulo, the church organised a parade from the Nancefi eld Municipal offi ces to their church premises in the township.

Pesulo says Christians had a role to play in maintaining democracy. “Christians should not only dominate in churches, they should also be part of the government structures since they

are part of the democracy of this country. Christians were also part of the youth who fought for the abolishment of Bantu Education in 1976. If God has authority over the ones who are elected, then we should also play our part to make sure that people’s political wishes are maintained.”

The coordinator of the event, Pastor Kgaugelo Mhlongo, said dapart from being involved in politics and the maintenance of democracy, the most important thing that all Christians should do was to pray. “Whether you like it or not, to be a citizen, with the freedoms we have, means

responsibility to those freedoms. We feel that, as a church, we have an obligation to join the world in commemorating this special day.”

One of the young people who took part in the event, Lesedi Kgalushi, stated that as Chris-tians they felt that they should celebrate the day as part of hon-ouring the deaths of hundreds of Soweto schoolchildren. “This day changed the course of the country’s history. Through this parade, we are showing respect to our heroes who made things to be possible for us to have this better life that we are enjoying now.”

Ms Makhuvha’s radio career was very brief and lasted from 2007 to 2009 while she was studying. She said there was a time that her love for radio tempted her to abandon her varsi-ty studies to pursue a career in radio broad-casting. “If it wasn’t for my dad, I would have ventured into radio, but my father sat down with me and directed me in what I think is the right direction and I contin-ued with my studies,” she said.

Her story continued after 2009 when she graduated at the Uni-versity of Venda with an LLB degree. After ob-taining her degree, she went to law school and from there she worked as a candidate attorney at the Legal Aid Board.

Hardly two years into the profession, she was admitted as an inde-pendent advocate and, earlier this year, she opened her own law

fi rm, EM Attorneys. “They say there is no business in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) but are always clients every now and then who want to be represented in court,” she said.

She said that if it were not for her family and her spouse’s parents, she wouldn’t have tri-umphed in this profession. Being

a woman in an environment dom-inated by men never stopped her from reaching her full potential. “I’ve been told too often that this profession is for men, and that’s pure generalisation. I have been here and made it for myself, and yes, I am still growing. I always put those negative thoughts aside and focus on my goals,” she said.

Ms Cecelia Rambuda (left) is an assistant at EM Attorneys. She helps Ms Elelwani Makhuvha (right) with most of her work in the offi ce.

New road for Matshavhawe community R3.2m market stall project at MadimboResidents of Khunda and Matshavhawe in Ward 31 of the Makhado Municipality braved the cold weather last Friday morning to witness the official opening of the new Piesanghoek-Khunda tarred road.

The new access road was part of the projects approved by the Makhado municipal council for the 2013/2014 financial year.

Isolated villages in the Nzhelele area alongside the Witvlag farms have been with-out a tarred road and travelling was difficult, especially during

the rainy season.The village’s Vhakoma,

Vho-Nemirini, thanked the community and the municipal-ity. He said the road created smooth access to the villages.

“We should celebrate this development. Before, it used to be a privilege to travel on a tarred road, but today it’s a necessity,” he said.

The mayor, Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi, said that most of the projects that were approved during the financial year had been officially opened. He in-sisted that communities should

celebrate as the municipality would continue to take basic service to the communities. “Isolated or not, we will con-tinue to deliver services to all of our people, therefore we should celebrate the success of our projects,” he said.

The ward councillor, Cllr Richard Thandavhathu, said that during the financial year for 2014/2015, phase two would continue and proceed to Khunda village. “These communities have most of the services now and we will continue to deliver,” he said.

Nyamukamadi Mbedzi is an unemployed single mother of four children who survives by selling cooked food to local community members. She plies her trade under a tree at Mad-imbo village.

During rainy or windy days, she does not get income because she does not have a proper place to prepare and sell her food. This middle-aged woman hopes that her life will change for the better after the Musina Municipality started with the construction of a market place in her village.

The R3,2 million project will comprise 17 market stalls equipped with ablution facilities,

water and electricity connections. Local ward councillor Fistos

Mafela says the market place will be graded to make sure that the beneficiaries work in a dust-free and healthy environment. “We will also erect palisade fencing around the market place because it is important for our people to work in a secure environment. We will make the area more open and accessible for all the people who work or shop at the market. This is one of the projects that local people requested during ward meetings and we are im-plementing it, based on the will of the people and their priorities. This comes after public consulta-

tion with residents and different stakeholders within Ward 1 of the Musina Municipality.”

He said the public consulta-tion was aimed at gathering the thoughts of those who dealt with local economic development on a regular basis, to help the council ensure that the new market place met its purpose while recreating the history that Musina is re-nowned for and proud of. “It is hoped that not only will the new market layout create a renewed vigour for Madimbo village, by attracting more market traders and shoppers, but that it will also help to bring about new invest-ment in the village.”

As a young man, Sam Kanakana San-dani (47) dreamt of being a big star, only to fi nd out that the music industry was a diffi cult and challenging fi eld of choice.

This he realised while recording in Johannesburg where he was forced to sleep on cardboard boxes, newspapers and plastic. He told himself there and then that he would do something to improve conditions for artists, for them not to fi nd themselves where he was at that point.

He is now helping local and outside musicians to mould their careers. He coaches young and aspiring artists and helps them with recording.

Born in a musical family at Ha-Nesen-gani in the Vuwani area, for Sam Sandani it was just logical that the music bug

would bite him. His late father and busi-nessman Vho Calvin Maambelanduni Sandani was a guitarist of note who played with his two brothers, Empson and Phandamulongo. It was natural that the young Sam would sneak into the house and snatch his father’s guitar and strum it while the father was running his businesses. His love of music developed and he told himself that he would one day have his own band and build a studio that would help up-and-coming musicians.

Today, Sandani (47), of Maniini K Portion in Thohoyandou, works for the Department of Education and is living his dream. He has accumulated musical instruments one by one and assembled a studio at his house. The humble studio

started in 2002, but has attracted big names in the music industry such as Tshivhangwaho na Dzhatsha, Afropop singer Vinny Nange and

many other famous artists. Pres-ently, well-known musician

Alpheus Mukhese (Tar-get Fire) is working at

the studio.

They are busy with the fi nal touches on Mukhese’s

forthcoming album. Sandani has also ac-quired the services of much-sought-after producer and engineer Eric Nemathaga, who is now a resident producer/engineer at the studio. “We are living our dream. We have assisted many artists here who would otherwise not have had the chance to record. Studio rates are very high in Joburg, which makes many talented artists lose hope. We have been sent here and many are now able to come here, even on foot, and go back home after doing recordings. They are now realizing their dreams, and this makes me very happy,” added Sandani. He also has an album, Africa My Home, and has played for famous groups like Elfas and Simba, The Storm and The Pedestrians. His long-term plans include owning a record label that will look after the interests of many disadvantaged artists. “We are nearly there and the gates are opening up. Bit by bit we are acquiring the latest equipment and the quality produced here is second to none,” he said. Resident producer and master engineer Eric Nemathaga, who was doing the fi nal touches on Mukhese’s new album, said they were fast becoming the basket of African music. “Watch this space. I can tell you, before long we will be competing with the big recording companies. Our dream is to develop as many local artists as possible,” he said

A 28-year-old reggae singer, Ish-mael Mudau, uses his voice to urge parents to look after their dependants.

“I hold the view that a man or woman only becomes a real parent when they look after their children,” said Mudau. “I have seen how chil-dren end up living in the streets or in dire poverty right in their homes because parents are failing to provide for them.”

Mudau, who hails from Lwamon-do-Zwavhavhili, started singing at the age of 11 and only managed to record his fi rst album, Diphineni, in 2012. “This album is fi lled with lyrics which encourage people to be joyful and live in peace,” he said. “Why should we hate one another? There is no need!” His second offering, Ndi Ni Funa Nothe (I Love You All) ,came out late last year and was instantly nominated for a Tshivenda Music

Locally, I still look up to Khakhathi of Kha-khathi and Friends, and Humbulani Ramagwedzha as my motivators. Vho-Ramagwedzha played a big role to nurture my music career by guiding me.”

About music, he said: “To me, music is a gift I’ve been given by God to deliver positive messages to the people. I respect my art; I don’t take my gift of being a singer for granted.” Mudau is currently based in Chiawelo, Gauteng. During our interview a fortnight ago, Mudau maintained that, after the release of his latest album, the response became so huge that he had to bring home more stock. “The response is positive. People are so much in love with all my albums.”

He added that his music is all about life-related issues such as HIV/Aids, teenage pregnancy and family matters. “Most of my mes-sages are directed at the youth,” he said. “People can expect my new album by next year April. I also have a DVD for the album Diphineni and it is doing very well on the market.”

UAAC youth celebrate day with cultural activitiesHundreds of youths aligned to the Unit-ed African Apostolic Church’s youth wing filled the Thasululo FET Main Hall on 16 June for their Youth Day celebrations.

Dressed in their traditional blue and white Zionist garb, the youths from more than 30 of the church’s branches celebrat-ed the day in song and dance. Eight choirs competed during the event.

The winners, Tshamutilikwa UAAC Choir, Duthuni UAAC and Dzwerani UAAC, took home trophies and certif-icates while choir members received medals for their effort.

Thohoyandou District UAAC Youth chairperson Zacharia Munzhedzi said the competition was the first to be held by the church’s youth. “We have realized that many youth roam the streets on this very important day, with nothing to do, so that they end up engaging in unbecoming be-

haviour. Some end up getting pregnant or indulging in drug and alcohol abuse. We felt that this would be an opportune plat-form for the youth to display their talents. Our youths are talented, but they do not know this. It is through platforms such as this one that they can discover themselves and follow their talents and make a living out of their God-given skills,” he said.

He said he was happy that they had responded in large numbers and spent the whole day participating fully in the programme.

“We are very excited; this was just our first June 16 event to honour our prede-cessors who sacrificed their lives to put us where we are today. We hope to make this an annual event and, based on what we saw today, we hope next year will be better organized,” added Munzhedzi.

The function was also attended by se-nior church members and the CEO of Tha-

sululo FET, Mr Alfred Netshisumbewa. The college sponsored the competition.

“We are glad to be associated with this church and mostly its youth. The youth are the future of this country, and we felt we should partner with the church in nurturing them. Who knows, some of them might go out and make a living out of music. We also believe their presence here means that the Holy Spirit is all over here, which is a blessing to us,” said Netshisumbewa.

The guest speaker, Mr Paul Miriri of the Miriri Foundation, told youths that the youths of 1976 had fought for them to have a better life and education.

“Take your education seriously. You are very privileged. Education is free and there are many opportunities at this time. Embrace them with both arms, and stay away from drugs and alcohol. Lead by example, wherever you are, as members of the church,” he said.

The sponsor, Mr Alfred Netshisumbewa (standing left), senior church members and youth leaders with the trophies for the winning choirs.

The winning choirs pose for a photo at the celebrations.

The deputy chairperson of Uni-ven Radio Board, Ms Asnath Nesengani, has urged the busi-ness community and sponsors in Vhembe to support Univen Radio.

“We appreciate some of the local business partners who are advertising their businesses with Univen Radio and we are what we are because of you sup-port. You are like someone who ploughs the seed into fertile soil. One day you will reap what you sew, and we hope we are grow-ing bigger and bigger because of your support,” said Nesengani.

Nesengani was speaking during Univen Community Ra-dio’s gala dinner held near Tho-hoyandou about two weeks ago.

During the event, some of the businesspeople, sponsors and media houses were given tokens of appreciation as way of encouraging partnership with Univen Radio.

Univen Radio is a community radio station, established on 5 September 1997, and is based at the Univen campus in Tho-hoyandou.

According to the director of communications and marketing

at Univen, Mr Takalani Dzaga, Univen FM is a media house which provides information, ed-ucation and entertainment to the vast majority of people within the Vhembe region.

“We urge our advertisers to be Univen radio’s ambassadors, so that Univen radio can serve the communities around the Vhembe region with pride. Our station provides the platform for the community to address and understand issues of poli-tics, agriculture, sports, gender, youth development, women and children,” said Dzaga.

Limpopo Mirror received a token of appreciation during the event. In our photo, reporter Elmon Tshikhudo receives a gift on behalf of the company from Ms Tshilidzi Shirinda, the station manager of Univen FM (left) and Heavy T Mbedzi, the marketing manager.

Real Hearts too good for Muraleni United BrothersMuraleni United Brothers were surprised by their younger brothers, Midoroni Real Hearts, when they beat United 5-2 in the winter tourna-ment played at Makhitha on Sunday.

At the end of regulation time, the score was 1-1 and the winner was determined by a penalty shoot-out.

Brothers were strong at the far back and in the striking force department, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Hearts were ballooned from behind. Godwin Mahuwa of Brothers was booked for dirty tricks. Hearts enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into nothing by the rock-solid defence of Brothers. No goal was scored during the first half.

Hearts scored in the 78th minute through Phu-mudzo Thavhulo, after the keeper of Brothers mis-judged the ball. Hearts brought on Teddy Thavhiwa and Dalton Simali, but their introduction did not change the complexion of the match.

Rendani “Balo” Mathavha equalised three minutes later, after he caught the Hearts keeper off guard and blasted in a half-volley from inside the box.

Phumudzo Ramantswa (left) of Brothers controls the ball, while Vicent Ramakokovhu is waiting for the right time to pounce on it.

Dzanani Funwalk Club promotes healthy lifestyle

Some of the participants were photographed with the management of the Dzanani Township Funwalk Club.

“Eat healthy food, exercise and then live long.”

Those words were said by the health promoter in the Makhado local area, Ms Ruth Tshishonga, during a formal event that was held after the 16km fun walk at Biaba, Nzhelele, on Monday.

The Dzanani Township Funwalk Club arranges and holds the fun walk every three months, where both young and old people are invited to participate.

“I encourage you all to eat healthy food; don’t just eat junk food or refrigerated stuff because that kind of food is not good for your health,” Tshishonga said.

The chairperson of the Dzanani Township Funwalk Club, Mr Jerry Mukwevho, said that a need had al-ways existed for both young and old

people to get involved in fun walks. “Even those who are not registered as club members are welcome to partic-ipate in our actitivies,” he said. “We do not discriminate; the club is for all people around Dzanani.”

Mr Chris Mulaudzi (52) was the first person to reach the 16km fin-ishing line. He finished the walk in a record time of 2:10. One of the senior citizens who participated, Ms Annah Rambanduli (72), said she felt like she could add another 16km on top of the 16km she had walked already.

“There are so many of us gran-nies here, taking part, walking side by side,” she said vibrantly. “Our footsteps, as we march, make us encourage one another. It’s my first walk. But I am happy and will walk again next time.”

This semester’s event was spon-sored businesses such as, among others, Enos Bus Services, Nzhelele Spar, Nzhelele Funer-al Undertakers, and Maivha Bus Services. “We thank all our sup-porters and sponsors,” Mukwevho said.

“We wouldn’t have gone this far in terms of progress if you hadn’t supported us.”

Mr Chris Mulaudzi was the first person to reach the 16km mark.

Powerlines scrape throughTshaulu Powerlines came back from a 2-1 deficit and beat Ma-hagala Young Stars 3-2 in their semi-fi nal of the Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge at the Tshifudi Stadium last Saturday.

Stars displayed entertaining foot-ball in the opening minutes, but later faded. The fi rst half was characterized by wasted scoring opportunities. Tho-vhedzo Mudau of Young Stars was the fi rst player to cause an upset. He forced his way through the defence of Powerlines and unleashed a volley from inside the penalty box, but was not on target.

No goal was seen during the fi rst

half, despite numerous attempts by both sides. Both sides introduced two new faces early in the second half.

Young Stars were the fi rst to fi nd the net. Muhumbulo Netshipale beat the keeper with a ground cutter, following a great pass by Rivoningo Mabasa. The referee, Ms Lufuno Nemagovhani, fl ashed the fi rst yellow card in the 54th minute. Ndivhuwo Mukwevho of Powerlines tackled Mulisa Sithaba from behind and Nemagovhani was lenient not to give him his marching orders. The keeper of Powerlines, Thanyani Mudzanani, was also booked for a prolonged ar-gument with the referee.

Powerlines’ Rasta-farian striker, Lufuno Musetsho, scored his side’s equalizer in the 64th minute after a re-bound. The keeper of Powerlines sustained a knee injury and was replaced by Abram Tshivhalavhala. Young Stars took the lead fi ve minutes later. Akani Maluleke was on target after going loose from the right corner. Pow-erlines did not give up, although time was fast running out for them. They scored two goals in quick succession.

Their equalizer came via Hlengani Simango, who blasted in a rocket from the 25-meter area. Tshilidzi Ramadi scored the winner three minutes before the fi nal whistle.

Tsiruwani Mbedzi of Powerlines (left) and Azwinyandi Baloyi of Young Stars fi ght to win the ball.

Ndou joins Polokwane CityThe former top striker of Black Leopards, Rendani Ndou, will be in Polokwane City’s colours when the activities for the new season start in the second week of August.

According to Ndou’s manager, Mr Calvin Sihwili, the 26-year-old goal poacher joined the only Lim-popo side in the Absa Premiership Division after they signed a three-year contract.

Ndou, or Jethro as he is com-monly known, joined Black Leopards from the Mpum-alanga-based NFD side, Sivutsa Stars, in January this year. Although he had a two-year contract with Sivutsa Stars, the Maranzhe-born star stayed with the club for only 18 months. According to Sihwili, Sivutsa Stars failed to meet some of their contractual obliga-tions, something that prompted him to ter-minate the contract six months before its expiry date.

When asked about his move to Polok-wane City, he said he had been wait-ing for this mo-ment for too long. He further in-dicated that he wou ld work hard, so that he

could become a regular player in the team. “I know that the compe-tition is tough in the Premiership division, but I will do my best to ensure that I remain in the coach’s plans,” he said.

Ndou started his football career at the MMK Funeral Services League side, Mranzhe Hungry Lions. He later moved to MTM United Broth-ers, where he stayed for one season. He later migrated to the Vodacom Promotional League side, Vhembe

FC, where he was a regular for the duration of his two-year con-tract. When Vhembe FC sold

The U/13 netball team from Gateway Primary School came third in the development category of the recent Limpopo Netball Championships in Tzaneen. The principal, staff and team want to thank the sponsors who supported them. It was the first time for a team from Gateway to participate in the provincial championships and they looked professional in their new outfits, sponsored by Jack Klaff Auctioneers. An extra bonus came from Baobab Petroleum, who sponsored large kit bags with each team member’s name printed on as well as a meal. From KwikSpar, they received water bottles and refreshments for the trip. In our photo are at the back, from left to right, Mrs M Theron, Karabo Nthekiso, Esnath Mokwena, Brilliant Ramashidzha and Mr J Garandia. In front are Mrs M Vorster, Rovho Malindi, Esther Mukwevho, Daisy Sematla and Lufuno Mavhona.

Zamenkomste Brothers the champions of winter tournament

Vonanai Ntlemo of United and Phumudzo Thavhulo attack the ball.

Zamenkomste United Broth-ers emerged as the winners of the local winter tournament when they beat Midoroni Real Hearts 2-1 in the final of the tournament at Makhitha on Sunday.

Midoroni approached the match like a house of fire, with their midfielders distributing tell-ing passes to the strikers. They threatened to score five minutes into the match, when Rudzani Khalushi forced his way through the defence and passed the ball to Delton Simali, but his attempt missed the target by inches.

In the 14th min-u te , Phumudzo Thavhulo of Miro-roni unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of United Mpho Mul-ingwa watched in disbelief as the ball hit the net. After the goal, Midoroni

lost shape in the midfield. The second half saw United press-

ing hard in search of goals, but they failed to break the rock-solid defence of Real Hearts. Midoroni abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

Nathaniel Makhuja of United scored the equalising goal of the match in the 54th minute. He un-leashed a powerful header from outside the box and beat the keeper. Vonani Ntlemo scored the winner when he dribbled past three players in a row and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

By Frank Mavhungu

Narrow victory for MastersDimani Young Masters narrowly beat the Tshaulu Soccer Academy 1-0 to secure a place in the fi nal of the Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge at the Tshifudi Stadium last Saturday.

It was the second game for Soccer Academy in a space of four hours. Soccer Academy beat Begwa United Brothers 6-4 in their quarterfi nal match at the same venue earlier that day.

The fi rst 15 minutes saw Soccer Acad-emy enjoying more ball possession in the middle of the park, with Young Masters

showing no cohesion. They squandered two clear chances, however, within the space of six minutes. Owen Munzhelele caused an upset when he volleyed from the edge of the box, instead of taking his time and picking his spot. Mpho Mudau committed almost a similar blunder a little later when his close-range volley went far wide.

No goals were scored in the fi rst half.Tshilidzi Mudau of Young Masters was

reprimanded with a card, following an illegal tackle on Avhatendi Ndou in the

56th minute. The game turned lukewarm after both sides effected some changes to their starting line-ups.

The goal that separated the boys from the men came in the 64th minute. Masters’ slender striker, Robert Mudau, caught the Academy keeper, Muvhuso Simba, napping and blasted in a rocket after a scramble within the box.

Young Masters started to use their delaying tactics after the goal. Their mid-fi elder, Maipfi Siala, was warned with a card for wasting time.
