Thank you to all who attended our Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 21st. We served dinner to 47 guests, which is a few more than last year. We are continuing to grow each year. The Leadership students, Lucy Cole, Monica Delgado, Julianna Edwardson, Omero Guerrero, Hailee Jerome, Taylor Long, Ricardo Pina, Noe Quezada, Mandy Southard, and Amanda Voss, had a wonderful time preparing the meal and serving it. They look forward to seeing everyone next year.

A special thank you to Nancy Cooper who once again came to help us prepare the food and get everything ready!!!
And thank you to all those who donated items to help out.

The district is involved in two projects that I would like to tell you about this month. The first addresses student and
staff safety.
Seeing that all of the district’s students learn at high levels is a top priority and the one in which we invest the most time, energy, and money. As high a priority as student learning is, the district’s very highest priority is to assure the health and safety of students and staff. To that end we are in the second year of a two year federal grant funded project to develop and test a c o mpr e he ns i v e e me r ge nc y preparation and management plan. On page 4 of this month’s newsletter you will find an overview of the project that details the project objectives, a description of the work that has taken place to date, and the work that is yet to be completed before the project ends in June of 2012. Mr. Bruce Merighi is facilitating the development of the emergency response plan. Mr. Merighi is a retired fire fighter and regional consultant who works with many organizations and private businesses to develop and maintain their emergency response
plans.
When the project is complete, the district will have a plan for responding to virtually any emergency. The plan includes a command structure to control the response. It also includes the assignment of teams to deal with the var io us e le me nts o f a ny
emergency. Teams manage school evacuation, first aid, reunion/release of students, transportation, emotional support, facility management, and food
service.
Over the course of this school year staff and students will have practiced an increasingly complex set of drills and simulations that range from a simple fire drill to a full scale evacuation of the campus that requires students to be bused to an off campus location. In between the simple fire drill and the full scale evacuation, drills will be held for shelter in place (response to an external event like a gas leak or chemica l spi ll) and lock down
(response to a potentially violent intruder or similar situation). As the drills become more complex, the district will work in p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h emergency response agencies such as the fire department and sheriff’s office. Jim Brooks and Miles Caples are leading
development and implementation of this critical health and safety plan for
the district.
Another important project is just getting underway. We were pleased to be notified on November 16 that the district will receive $108,000 in e-rate funding to upgrade our computer network infrastructure. The project will replace our existing network cabling, routers, switches, and wireless connection system, giving us an
entirely new network that will last for many years. The district will also replace its aging phone system as part of this upgrade. The new phone system will be a part of the new computer
network.
E-rate (also known as Universal Service Fee) funding has been available since 1996. The federal law that governs e-rate is designed, among other things, to provide discounted rates for telecommunication and Internet infrastructure for schools and libraries. E-rate money is managed by a private corporation that is overseen by the Federa l Communications Co mmiss ion. E-ra te mo ney is generated by a fee collected from businesses that provide interstate or internat ional te lecommunicat ion services. Entiat is fortunate to be funded for this work at the high discount rate of 80 percent. The 20 percent that the district will provide is in the existing budget. Work on the project
will start in the next few weeks.
AMERICORNER
First of all we’d like to send thanks to all who came out to our first Family Literacy Night. We had a lot of fun travelling around the world with you! Keep your eyes open for reminders about our next event, ―Books and Breakfast,‖ which will be happening in January. In addition, our ―Entiat Night at the Wild‖ paperwork will be coming home the first week in
December.
Our October Box Tops competition has come to a close with 4th grade in the lead. Each student in the class will be receiving 20 tiger tickets. November’s winner is still pending until the counting has been completed. The final wave of the competition will begin after Thanksgiving break and continue through December, ending on the 15th. The class that collects the most box tops for this final competition will win a party. Good luck, and keep up
the good work!

Veteran’s Day Program Huge Success
Students in grades 1-12 shone November 10th at our annual Veteran’s Day As-sembly as they honored family and friends who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Students in grades 1-4 sang patriotic songs during the program, which was narrated by fifth graders. Middle Schoolers Talilia Gadbaw and Edwin Medina gave moving speeches about Veterans who had inspired and touched their lives. The High School Choir sang superbly. The first song was a memo-rium for those who gave their lives and the final number, America’s Song, was about taking pride in our country. The sixth grade band performed two patriotic musical numbers, and the 7-12th grade band performed the anthems of each
branch of service. A slide presentation, put together by our own Tyler Westcott, brought many to tears. It featured family and friends who have served or are currently serving in the mili-tary. Veterans in attendance lined the wall so students could
greet them and personally thank them for their service.
When the project is
complete, the district will have a
plan for responding
to virtually any
emergency.

‘Tis the Season….To Give
During these trying economic times EVCSFB still finds the means to offer a helping hand to those who truly need it. This year, as the slumping economy continues to humble even high-income households, we are increasingly seeing families who are worried more about putting food on the table and paying rent than they are about purchasing a toy for their children. These are the realities of today for low-income and working poor
Americans.
Each year EVCSFB provides many opportunities for you to reach out to needy families and individuals in our community by ―adopting‖ those in need, donating food, clothing, and equipment, or volunteering your time.
This year EVCSFB will need everyone’s help.
Entiat Valley Community Services, „Spirit of Giving‟ Fest & Holiday Dinner Saturday, December 10, 11am to 6pm at Entiat Grange. All are warmly invited to participate …all ages, all connections. Meet new friends and old as you join us for the Spirit of Giving Fest & Holiday Dinner with some magical music, arts and crafts for children, and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Free holiday event for everyone, dinner at 4 pm. Would
you like to help?
It is our passion and our mission to help those in need in any way possible. We will once again have our „Holiday Giving Tree‟ at Numerica Credit Union December 5th. It is waiting for people to adopt families,
children, and seniors for the Holidays, providing Holiday Food and Gift Baskets. Items such as warm coats, mittens, hats, toys, baby buntings, lap blankets, and food are needed to give to the less
fortunate in our community.
Join the “Snow Shovel Brigade” to help seniors, veterans, or persons with disabilities who can’t. The program encourages citizens, especially youth 13 and over, to voluntarily shovel snow for seniors in their neighborhoods. Seniors and persons with disabilities recognize the volunteers who shovel their walkways by nominating them as Snow Angels. Nominated Snow Angels will receive a certificate, pin, and letter, and also will be entered in a drawing to win prizes. People who need assistance with walkways must apply. Donations of shovels, gloves, and electric snow shovels are needed. Call 784-
7117 to donate, volunteer, or apply for assistance.
Empty Bowls Dinner and Silent Auction Fundraiser December 8, 4pm to 6pm at Entiat Grange. Reserve your bowl today for $15, call 784-1801. Dinner consists of soup, bread and a bowl. Silent Auction features hand painted platters by local artists Dale Sanford and Jeff Tift. Sponsors of the event are Cooper’s Store, Log
Cabin, Entiat Ceramic Barn and Entiat Food Center.
Would you be willing to donate cookies, holiday breads, candies, pies, etc. or help clean-up, serve dinner, make table favors, decorate the Grange for the holidays? If you would like to help call 784-7117. Volunteers
warmly welcomed – Come and be the difference in your community.
Thank you for your continued support in our programs and services to provide for those in need.
Wishing you a warm Happy Holiday Season.

Readiness and Emergency Planning in Schools (REMS) The Entiat School District was awarded a federal grant to improve the District’s capability to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises and emergencies. Since work began in the fall, the District has reviewed and revised the existing Emergency Plan, begun coordinating with local emergency response agencies, provided National Incident Management Response (NIMS) training to District staff, created an Incident Management Team, and developed a District emergency drill schedule. As the project moves forward, the district will provide parents with information about our new emergency procedures, gather input about the emergency plan, and obtain community participation in upcoming drills and exercises. In addition, they will train response teams and conduct two table top exercises with community partners covering a food related emergency and a pandemic outbreak and how it affects the continuity of school operations. By the time the project ends in June 2012, the District will have improved emergency training, increased the number of hazards addressed by the new emergency plan, improved partnerships with Fire, Law, Ambulance, Health & Emergency Management agencies, improved the response time and quality of response to practice drills and simulated crises, and developed a sustainable system of emergency
management and response.
