26th May 2016 - Week 4 Term 2 The winter sports season has well and truly kicked off with lots of our children involved in football, netball, rugby and hockey. Some children battle with fair play and it is important as parents and teachers that we provide good role modeling. It is important to be gracious winners as well as losers. I saw great evidence of this at the Chess champs on Tuesday, where children had to accept a loss through their own mistakes, such as touching a piece and then being committed to moving it, which at times resulted in a loss. All the children acted in the right spirit which was great to see. Motupipi Chess Champions On Tuesday we took a team of twenty to the Interschools’ Chess Champs in Nelson with excellent results The Motupipi Championship section team of Phoebe, Will, Jack and Xavier took out the gold medal for top Nelson/ Tasman team with Phoebe winning another gold as top player by winning all seven of her games. In the Rookies division, which is for first time tournament players, Jay won six and drew one of his seven games to earn first in the division. Riley W, who is only in Year Three, won six of his seven games to take out 2 nd place. All players performed creditably with many being involved for the first time in a tournament setting, complete with having to use chess clocks. Thanks to Will for giving the younger players a lesson in the four move checkmate prior to the tournament. A number of our Rookies used it to good effect to take out wins. We try to offer different opportunities to extend children, taking part in chess tournaments is one of those. Thanks to Rachel, Jo and Mandy for transporting the children and for your positive support of them. It was really, really good fun. I got two wins and three stalemates. Some of the kids were really hard to beat. Carlos I was frustrated when I made a silly move against the second top player and it caused me to lose. I was in a position to win the game. I was so annoyed with myself. I was excited to win a gold for the top team. Will I played Dad at home to practice for the tournament but I haven’t beaten him yet but I will one day. I got first in the Rookies division. I won one with the four move checkmate that Will taught me. Jay

Hockey - Saxton Nelson Next week we have the Nelson / Tasman Interschools’ Hockey with the Year 3/4 playing on Tuesday and the Year 5/6 children on Thursday. Children were given the option to play, but had to commit to giving up a couple of breaks a day to
practice.
Year 3/4 players are Rian, Riley W, Kiyo, Kahu, Teru, Gabriel, Aonghus, Trey, Lochie, Archie, Hayden, Jayden, Hugo and Brody
Ashley, Phoebe, Caitlin A, Lily, Elisa, Emma, Iris ,Rosie and Gypsy Lief, Kier, Jay, Riley O, Tarn, Jack, Yoshi, Rhys, Charlie, Will, Jax, Trey, Xavier and Joe
We plan to leave by car at 7.30am so if you are able to help with transport please let us know.
Children will need $5 for transport ( can be paid at the office or will be added to school account)
Shorts Sports shoes
Shin pads or ½ a rolled magazine to put under socks (optional)
Lunch / snacks, plus something for on the way home Warm clothes as it can get quite cool at Saxton Field

School T shirt supplied
Hockey sticks supplied. (can bring own if they wish) I am nervous about playing in the hockey tournament. I played last year and I really enjoyed it. It is fun playing with your friends. Ashley This will be my first tournament. I like playing hockey and I’m good at passing and I can hit the ball hard. Brody I love playing sport and I can’t wait to play in Nelson. We have been practicing with Malcolm. He is teaching us how to steal the ball off the other team. Kiyo

The planned disco for this Friday has been postponed. We will advise an alternative date
soon.

Board of Trustees Meeting
We will be holding our first Board of Trustees meeting for the new Board next Wednesday 1 June, 6.30pm in the staffroom.
Congratulations to Andy Williams and Susi Struck, who along with ex parent Kirsten Nalder have been elected onto the GBHS Board of Trustees.
NETBALL NEWS Last Saturday, we had the pleasure of hosting Golden Bay Junior Netball here at Motupipi School. Our first team
had a challenging game against Takaka Primary. Our Player of the Day went to Caitlin W. She had a great
defensive game and always had a big smile on her face. A great effort for only her second ever game of netball!
Our second team faced a very polished team from Collingwood. Our Player of the Day for this team went to Gypsy
for her tireless, amazing work at centre.
The fundraising committee sold soup & bread, sausages and chocolate brownies to keep us all warm. Many thanks to
Rachel, Jo H, Susi and helpers!
I was centre for the whole game and that is my favourite position. We lost to Collingwood and they were really tall and hard to beat. We need to get into position better and maybe bounce pass to get past the tall players. Gypsy
Collingwood were very good and hard to play and they kept getting the ball off us. I think we need to get better at defending and practice our shooting more. Emily H
Takaka had a really good player who was tall and fast and she kept getting the ball off us. I need to practice a bit more. Aliana
