Eucharistic Ministers needed for Nursing Home

Ministry

Nursing Home Eucharistic Ministers visit seniors who are unable to come to Mass, putting on a simple prayer service for them and giving them Commun-ion each week. Volunteers are especially needed for Thursday afternoons at 4:00 pm at Preston Pointe, Saturday mornings at 10:30 am at Spring Arbor, and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am for Brookdale. Preston Pointe is t h e m o s t p r e s s i n g need. Ministers serve in a rota-tion with other volunteers. Ideally the commitment is one time per month. Specialized training for nursing home ministry is availa-ble. Make some new friends and bring Christ to them. You’ll be glad you did. Contact Aris at [email protected] for more information or to sign up.

St. Michael Safe Environment Stewardship Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord,

Teach me to be generous as You have been generous with me. Teach me that all I am and have are gifts from You. And gifts, Lord, are meant to be shared.

Show me the joys of generosity. Help me to understand that others, perhaps unknown to me, depend on me for help.

Remind me that my world, my parish, need “Good Samaritans” to heal the wounds of our times. Make me a gift to others in Your name. Amen.

26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 30, 2018

Positivity Project:

Open-Mindedness

What is Open-Mindedness? You like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions. According to Positivity Project educational materials, this character strength helps individuals build knowledge about specific issues or points of view – and provide sound recommendations and advice. Open-minded people do not jump to conclusions. Instead, they seek out and examine all the available evidence before forming an opinion. Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practi-cal advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individu-als form meaningful and lasting relationships. For Reflection: · How important is open-mindedness to you in your work or at home? · Think of some examples of how you have examined all available evidence

before forming an opinion.

Would you like to talk to a priest about the need for healing in the Church? The priests at St. Michael are available for appointments to answer any of your concerns or questions. Please contact them at the email on the cover of the bulletin or call the Parish Office .

From Our Bishop!

Msgr. Doug, It is with gratitude that I congratulate you and the community of St. Michael the Archangel Parish for exceeding your par-ish goal for the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. This generous response reflects the commitment of your community of faith to our Lord, His Church and our neighbors in need. These funds support the faithful in our Diocese and our neighbors across eastern North Carolina. Please know that I am humbled and grateful to serve as your Bishop. Thank you for your priestly ser-vice and leadership. May Our Lord Jesus bless you and may Mary our Mother watch over you and your parishioners always. In Christ, Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama, J.C.L. Bishop of Raleigh

St. Michael Online Giving:

Our parish has been using an Online Giving system that is strengthening stewardship as well as making it easier for members to support our par-ish. There are many benefits for the parish and for parishioners that choose to give online. Some of the benefits for the parishioner include: no need to write checks; you can give even if you are on vacation; and your amount can easily be adjusted. Those who wish to continue to use traditional methods of offering may do so, however, we ask that you prayerfully consider Online Giving. If you would like to enroll, please visit www.stmichaelcary.org and click the Online Giving button on the main page. If you have any ques-tions about the program don't hesitate to call Cindy Linville at 919-468-6104 or [email protected].

Our parish New Member Committee routinely hosts monthly welcoming events for anyone considering joining our

church. In order to register as a parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, we request that you attend one of these events.

Please contact the Parish Office and ask for more information about scheduled dates. Call: 919-468-6100 or email: [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to learn more about life at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, visit with other members, learn about exciting ministries and the vibrant community that supports them.

The next NEW-MEMBERS gathering is:

Dinner: October 10, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the Conference Center Gallery

To register online for this go to: www.stmichaelcary.org

& click on Parish Life , then Register for an Event, or contact the Parish Office

A Pathway to Discipleship

We will be back together again for our Friday morning men’s program beginning Sept 21 exam-ining the lives of numerous Canonized Saints of the Church. We will be sharing the presentation leadership position each week and have a similar format to our previous series with a talk or video followed by a table discussion. We hope to come

to a resolution each week after developing a clearer understanding of the struggles each of these human beings have endured to become models and examples of virtue and holiness for each of us on our journey in building the Kingdom of Christ in our day and age.

Where: Trinity Center (behind the main church) Multipurpose Room (second floor; enter by playground) 800 High House Rd. When: Fridays - Sept 21 - Dec 14; 6:00 to 7:30 am

The program itself is FREE, and there will be a continental breakfast pro-vided that is funded through donations by attendees. Contact Bill Burns or Greg Roman at [email protected] if you have any ques-tions , otherwise we look forward to seeing you Friday September 21.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

My oldest son is named Nathanael. We used the biblical spelling of his first name, and he has spent his entire life of 20 plus years having to correct people who try to spell his name. Those who have not met him before have no idea for sure how to spell his name. Of course, when we named him, we gave him a name that not only his friends would know him by, but by which God would know him. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Nathanael that he is "a true child of Israel." Nathanael wonders how Jesus knew him. Jesus knows him before he even speaks to him. Jesus knows us and calls us to believe in him. However, do we know him enough to be willing to fol-low him? Many of our sons and daughters believe in Jesus. We believe in Jesus. He knows us all better than we know ourselves. But do we truly know him? Do we have a genuine relationship with him? Have we allowed him to transform our lives? I know my son believes in Jesus. I believe in Jesus. I hope and pray we both can grow to know Jesus at least half as much as he knows us. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Vocation Chalice Program

The purpose of this program is to en-courage families to pray and promote vocations to the Priesthood and Reli-gious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special inten-tion for the Church.

Praying for vocations is the most powerful way to support voca-tions. A vocation is a call from the Holy Spirit, a gift from God that is nurtured in prayer. When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a very special way. We hope that those who bring the cup home will continue to pray daily for vocations.

How the Program Works Each week at Mass, an assigned family is invited to take the gifts up at the Offertory Procession. At the end of Mass, the family is called by the priest to come forward to receive the chalice box and a blessing. Each day for a week, during prayer time, the family prays for an increase and perseverance of vocations. They can also send a note of support to a Seminarian, Priest or Sister. The following Sunday, the family returns the chalice box for another family to take home.“ If you are interested in signing up for any specific date, please email Carmen Latoni at [email protected]. There’s a need for coordinators as well. We will start the program on the weekend of Nov 4.

Seminar: Live Well and Thrive at Home We all hope to age gracefully, living independently in our homes as long as we can. Come and learn about how to assess your ability to live at home, questions to ask yourself to evaluate if a move to a community makes sense and finally, learn about the great resources in our Cary community that can help you!

St. Michael will join hundreds of church-es around the nation in hosting the Oct 7 Rosary for Our Nation (the Feast of the Rosary). The Rosary is scheduled for 4 PM at St. Michael. Do you know the name D.C. McAllister? She is a columnist and commentator for several publications, including The Federalist. She and her family recently received death threats, and she was also threatened with rape, because she is publicly against abortion. (Sometimes a single tweet on a Twitter account gets twisted by unstable people). McAllister shared her story in a September 19 story for PJ Media. Here is part of her conclusion:

"Through my recent experience, I was reminded of the necessity and reality of relationships — relationships built on truth and love. And because we fail at both, falling either to the side of truth and no love or love and no truth, we need the one thing that keeps these two in balance: grace. We must show one another grace as we work to maintain the very relationships Leftist worldviews want to dismantle. We might win arguments, sell more books, make clever jabs on television, score points in a Twitter tirade, but it means nothing if we leave a trail of broken relationships in our wake."

Reminder: We’re in the 40 Days for Life Campaign

As mentioned last week, 40 Days for Life is a focused Pro-Life campaign that aims to bring people together in a spirit of unity throughout 40 days of peace-ful prayer vigils, fasting, and community outreach. Participants seek God’s favor in an effort to gently turn hearts and minds from thralldom to a culture of death to celebration of a Culture of Life, thus bringing an (eventual) end to abortion. This campaign runs Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Sunday Nov. 4.

Project Rachel Support Group Abortion is one of the most common procedures in the US, experi-enced by millions of women, many of whom are Catholic. Abor-tion creates a wound in post-abortive women, (and men) resulting in spiritual and emotional problems. The Project Rachel ministry assists women and men who have been wounded by abortion to find truth and healing. There is a support group beginning in the Triangle area in August. If you have experienced an abortion and would like more information about the support group, contact Pro-ject Rachel at (919) 852-1021 or email [email protected]. For more information go to http://projectrachelnc.org/ (website) Calls and appointments are kept strictly confidential.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: I've heard that we become angels when we die. Is this what the Church teaches?

Answer: As human beings, we are both spiritual and corporeal. We are body and soul. This makes us unique in all creation. No other physical creature -- plant or animal -- possesses an immortal soul made in God's image and likeness. Like the distinction with plants and animals, angels have an entirely different sort of existence. Angels are pure immortal spirit, and they have been so since the moment of their creation. While they may take on an appearance of a body in Biblical history, they are not a body like we are. Angels are neither male nor female, despite the art we often see. As the result of the Fall, human beings experience death. Our souls are temporarily separated from our bodies. However, we do not become something other than human. Every Sunday in the Creed we profess "I believe in the resurrection of the body." As Jesus was united with his body on the third day, so, too, will we be united with our bodies at the end of time.
