Growing up I remember my Grandmother telling us to treat others as you want to be treated and to always be willing to listen to everyone’s story as a lesson can always be learned. My Grandmother was described by others as a loving and giving woman who would

not only walk a mile in your shoes, but would give you hers even if it was her last pair. She would tell us that when you give you receive more in return and that you need to have an open heart.

I remember walking in the park with my Grandmother when I was young and finding a dollar bill in the grass. She immediately told me that anytime you find money that is not yours, no matter the amount, you tuck it in your pocket and on Sunday before Mass you put it in the poor box. I remember making a face of disappointment, and then she continued telling

me that it was never mine to own. She put her arm around me telling me that God is trusting me to take this small but mighty dollar and know that someone else’s needs are far greater than mine, and in return God will give you far greater riches. I put that dollar in the poor box that Sunday and to this day when I find money on the ground I tuck it in my pocket. Then on Sunday before Mass I put that money in the poor box with a smile on my face hearing my Grandmother’s voice telling me that it is in giving that we receive.

I taught my own children my Grandmother’s lesson on trust and to this day whether it is a penny or a dollar my son, my daughter and I tuck it in our pockets and put it in the poor box before Mass on Sunday. I will always remember that a very wise woman taught me to understand that riches are not obtained through monetary gain, but in the way we choose to share.

PARISH HAPPENINGS

Mass Schedule Changes

Earlier this year, we invited the parish communities of the MPH grouping to participate in a survey to share our reactions to the Interim Mass Schedule which we adopted last October. Many responded to this invitation and shared their opinions. Among these responses, the following trends have been noticed:

Many have emphasized that it’s important that our daily schedule evenly distributes the number of Masses among our five parishes. With that in mind, we believe that it’s reasonable to schedule three daily Masses each week at each of our five parishes.

Many have noted that it will be important to schedule the workload among our priests in such a way that is sustainable not only now (when we have four priests assigned at MPH), but also in the future (when fewer priests will be available). Along those lines, we’ve noted that it’s not possible to schedule more than three daily Masses each weekday and two on Saturday.

We’ve read these responses prayerfully and carefully, and as a result, have decided to implement the following Daily Mass schedule, effective October 7, 2019:

Thank you for responding to the MPH Interim Mass Schedule Survey and helping us refine our daily Mass schedule! We’ll reach out by telephone call to those who have scheduled Mass intentions for the Tuesday / Thursday 7:15am Mass for the remainder of 2019, to learn how you would like to re-schedule those intentions this year or in 2020.

MARRIAGE PLANS Marriage arrangements are to be made with a member of the clergy team at the time you are setting the

wedding date. Please contact the parish office.

A Marriage Moment For the Spring Equinox (March 20) I suggested that you celebrate equality in your marriage by balancing

whatever "spring cleaning" was necessary. For the Fall Equinox (Sept. 23) perhaps you can balance the tasks of putting away summer equipment. Balance this "work" with each sharing a favorite summer memory.

PARISH HAPPENINGS

Our Diocese is planning its annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebration for couples who have been married for 50 years. This year’s celebration will take place on Sunday, November 17, 2019 with Bishop Zubik, who will celebrate Mass at 2:30 PM at St. Paul Cathedral. Any couples who have celebrated or will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during 2019 are asked to submit husband and wife’s name (including maiden name), date of marriage, couples mailing address, and best phone number to Kathy Tucek at the office (412.373.0050 ext. 210) no later than October 4, 2019. Participants will receive a personal invitation with instructions from diocesan offices after the parish submits the names of those who will attend. Couples are welcome to bring as many loved ones to the celebration as they wish.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebration Eucharistic Adoration St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote: “Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the Sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us”. The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: By not only celebrating the Eucharist, but also by praying before It outside of Mass, we are

enabled to make contact with the very wellsprings of Grace..."

2019 Public Square Rosary Crusade

America is in spiritual crisis. Secularists are trying to push GOD from the public square. They reject His beneficial action upon society. But without God, where will our leaders get the wisdom to solve the great problems we face? And there are MANY!! We must STOP the secularist advances and pray to God for help. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. That's why we are joining in the Worldwide 2019 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Come and pray the Rosary. Let’s honor the 102nd Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima's apparition, 1917-2019 Remember: There will be no peace in our lives

Celebrate the Rosary

Taizé is a small village in the eastern part of France. Since 1940 it has been the home of an ecumenical community of brothers where prayer, three times a day, is the center of life. Part of that prayer time is spent in singing short repetitive refrains or ostinatos .Thousands of people from around the world visit Taizé every year. Our Taizé Services borrow from the tradition of Taizé as we offer our prayers and meditations around the cross. Our next service will be Wednesday, October 23, 2019, 7:00 pm at St. Gerard Majella Church.

26th Sunday In Ordinary Time

Last weekend in this space, we began looking at the three topics that were discussed at our parish assemblies earlier this month:

Who are we? What does it mean to call ourselves a ‘parish’? What is this whole ‘team ministry’ thing all about, anyway?

What is our situation? How large is our five-parish community? How many of us attend Mass? What do our finances look like, both week-to-week and in terms of our savings and our loans?

Where are we going from here? what is this ‘merger’ thing all about? How will we decide the best way to use our resources for the benefit of our parish community?

Today, we’ll begin taking a closer look at the question “what is our current situation?”

Demographics: in our five parishes, there are 12,000 registered parishioners. However, on any given weekend, only 3,000 people participate in our liturgies. In addition, our parish family is shrinking: for every baptism that is performed in one of our parishes, there are three funerals. In part, this is due to the shrinking demographic in our region. However, the trend of 25% participation in weekly liturgies is characteristic of Catholics in the U.S.; these downward trends in participation also have been accelerated by events in the past few years.

Liturgies and Church Capacity: as we examine the numbers of participants in our weekend liturgies, one natural question that arises is “how effectively are we utilizing our church building resources?” The graphic below shows that our buildings are, on average, only one-third full for weekend Mass. (Since the times that Mass is offered impact the number of people who attend, the numbers for each church should only be used as general trends. The real number is the total: no matter where Mass is celebrated in our grouping, we tend to use only about 1/3 of our capacity.) The standard from the Diocese of Pittsburgh is that a weekend Mass should utilize at least 50% of the capacity of the church. None of our Masses each weekend meets that standard.

To sum up: due to a variety of reasons, our active parish family is becoming ever smaller, and we have more capacity in our church buildings than we are utilizing. Next week, we’ll take a look at the financial situation in our parishes!

Over the past few weekends, we’ve talked about choosing a new identity for our combined parish. We’d like to hear what your preferences are, among the nine possibilities that our advisory councils have suggested!

Please browse to www.mphcatholic.org/new-name or fill out the form on the next page to register your preference! Thanks!

PARISH HAPPENINGS

This is a peaceful prayer vigil held from 7am – 7pm in front of Planned Parenthood, 933 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh. The MPH Catholic will

participate on Monday, Oct. 14 from 11am-1pm and Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 5-7pm. We need parishioners who are willing to stand and pray for the unborn and for a change of heart of the mothers and the workers at the abortion clinic. Please contact Lisa Mears at 412-607-3846 or [email protected] to sign up to participate during those times. If you cannot make those times, you may sign up for any time during the Fall campaign at 40daysforlifepittsburgh.com. Signing up is not required to participate. If you are unable to participate on the sidewalk, please fast and pray to end abortion.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about the process of choosing a new identity for our combined parish. We’ve presented the nine names that our advisory councils suggested on our behalf. Now, we want to ask you what your preference is, among these nine possibilities! We’d like to suggest that you use our website to register your preference. Please fill out the online form at www.mphcatholic.org/new-name to let us know what you’re thinking! If you’re unable to use our on-line page, then please tear off the form below and drop it in the collection basket next week or the week after. Thanks for participating in helping select a new name for our new parish!

Mrs. Scarpino’s 2nd grade class is off to a fantastic start! They began the year learning the routines and procedures of big 2nd graders. Then, they quickly went through review work from 1st grade which they all did

excellent on. They transitioned into doing independent learning centers and math tubs. The class loves the new responsibility and ownership of self-directed time management. They have already jumped into addition and subtraction as well as word problems,

different comprehension skills and phonemic awareness, and are beginning personal narrative writing. They are also learning about plants and communities. Not only are they off to a good academic start, but they demonstrate kindness and good citizenship each day towards one another. They are a tremendous group and their teacher is extremely proud of each of them.

Our school has a new website and we would love for you to take

a look! The web address is: www.dmapgh.org.

Faith based volunteers are needed to help immigrants who live in the Pittsburgh area. Volunteers provide transportation and support for grocery shopping, visits to doctors, and ICE appointments. Training will be provided for all volunteers.
