+ISEN Membership Information

The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN), formerly the Association for Convulsive Therapy (ACT), was established in 1976 and incorporated as a nonprofit, tax exempt corporation in 1993. ISEN is an international organization dedicated to promoting the safe, ethical and effective use of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and other brain stimulation therapies for the treatment of neuropsychiatric illness through education and research.

Activities through which this mission is accomplished include: co-sponsorship of The Journal of ECT (the official journal of the ISEN), sponsorship of courses on ECT at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the ISEN Annual Meeting

and Scientific Program (held on the first Sunday of the APA Annual Meeting), an annual certification course for ECT, co-sponsorship of other scientific meetings and ECT training courses throughout the year, and the convening of task forces regarding ECT issues.

The 2017 Annual Meeting of ISEN will include a day-long scientific program, as well as a forum for the exchange of views, ideas and opinions of the membership. The program will feature presentations by leaders in the field and topics of timely interest. +ECT Course Overview

Intended Audience Since its development in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy has remained a crucial part of the psychiatrist’s armamentarium in the treatment of major mental illness. Continued research has resulted in numerous refinements in treatment technique. Recommendations in the last decade regarding optimal practice have included important new ideas regarding patient selection, stimulus dose titration and outpatient maintenance strategies. The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN), in accordance with its mission to promote the safe and effective use of ECT, commissioned a task force in 1997 to study the training and credentialing of clinicians in this treatment modality. As a result of this task force, this full-day course on ECT, with exam, was developed. This course has been developed for psychiatrists, other physicians and nurses involved in the administration of ECT.

Objectives At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to n  identify the indications for electroconvulsive therapy and appropriateness of patients. n  evaluate patients to determine appropriateness for unilateral or bilateral treatment. n  understand stimulus settings for present ECT devices. n  identify and manage common ECT complications. n  develop effective continuation and maintenance treatment strategies for patients with recurrent illness.

Accreditation Practicum sessions will give attendees sufficient time to complete the course objectives. However, as a sponsor of the course, Professional Education Services Group (PESG) and the International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation do not certify the competency of any individual. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of PESG and ISEN. This activity will provide continuing education for physicians and psychologists, as well as a general participation CE certificate for other attendees. This activity is approved for up to 6 hours of continuing education. Professional Education Services Group is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physicians should only claim credit to the extent of their participation. The American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. PESG is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PESG maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

+Annual Meeting Overview

Intended Audience This year’s conference is intended for practitioners, mental health professionals and researchers of ECT and related stimulation techniques. The conference will focus on preventing relapse and will provide an update on the current practices, research and technical issues in ECT, TMS, DBS, tDCS, MST and other brain stimulation modalities. A poster session will allow for the most recent research in ECT and other brain stimulation modalities to be presented. The information presented in this CME offering reflects the opinion of the presenters. As with all science, there may be multiple explanations for the data and multiple reasonable conclusions. Objectives At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to n  be aware of and able to describe, the cognitive outcomes of ECT. n  understand how cognitive  outcomes relate to ECT treatment technique. n  be aware of tools for monitoring and measuring cognitive outcomes in clinical ECT practice. n  discuss emerging research in novel forms of brain stimulation and ECT. n  discuss new methods for improving the effects of TMS as a treatment. n  review the evidence base for treating depression with tDCS.
