From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, This weekend is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our first reading from the Second Book of Kings and our Gospel from St. Luke both tell of healings of men who were suffering from leprosy. Leprosy in ancient times was a horrific disease that was contagious and deadly. Victims were ostracized and removed from society. For Jewish people it meant that they were unable to worship and participate in the life of the Temple, which for a Jew would have been devastating. In the Second Book of Kings, Naaman, the Syrian commander who was a leper was told by the Jewish prophet Elisha to bathe seven times in the Jordan River. Naaman, a foreigner was cleansed of leprosy and he promised to no longer sacrifice to the pagan gods but to the Lord alone. Several key events in salvation history have occurred in the Jordan River. Besides Naaman being healed there, Joshua led the Israelites through the Jordan River and into the long awaited Promise Land. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Jesus showed his solidarity with all of sinful humanity when he allowed John to Baptize him in the Jordan. Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan prefigured His Passion and death on the Cross where He took away all our sins and nailed them to the Cross and destroyed death. And like Joshua who lead the Israelites into the Promise Land Jesus opened the gates of Heaven for us and leads us home to the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus healed ten lepers. For a Jewish man, this deadly disease of leprosy would have cut them off from the worship of God and from society. Sin does the same to us. Serious sin severs the charity of God, our relationship with Him and the Church. If we die in the state of serious sin we may not get into Heaven or perhaps be delayed a long time in purgatory. In our Gospel Jesus showed that he has power to heal and cleanse the lepers. From the graces He won on the Cross, Jesus heals and cleanses us of our sins through the waters of Baptism and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After Jesus healed the ten lepers He told them to,“Go show yourselves to the Priests.” Jesus has great respect for the Priesthood; He reminds us to show ourselves to the Priests and confess our sins so that we too can be healed and made clean before our God. Only one of the lepers who was cleansed returned to the Lord to thank him and he was a foreigner. Let us always have thankful hearts for all that the Lord has done for us and continues to do for us especially in His healing sacraments. Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Administrator

Parish Life:

The Baby Shower this past weekend on Respect Life Sunday was a huge success. Thank you to the many parishioners who bought baby items and purchased raffle tickets supporting NJ Right to Life. I also want to thank our parishioner, Rita Wenning and the many volunteers who worked so hard and helped to make the event a success. I’m sure that many mothers and children have been helped because of your generosity. Remember, to be Catholic is to be Pro-Life! Unfortunately, we had to cancel our parish picnic this year because of the weather. Be sure to mark your calendar for our Parish Halloween Party on October 30th at 6:00 pm. We are looking for volunteers to decorate their car trunks and give out treats for our “Trunk or Treat”. Please continue to support your parish and diocese as we draw nearer to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

The Genius of Being Women Wednesday Nov. 9th 7:00 pm –8:30 pm Our Lady Queen of Peace Hall

Fee: Free will offering at the door

Come join the women of our area to learn about how St John Paul II affirmed the dignity of women and reminded them that God needs their unique " feminine genius". Shifting focus from what we do to who we are in Christ, women find their true identity. God has called them to share their vibrant gifts in the New Evangelization, the New Springtime of the Church precisely for "such a time as this". Presenter: Cindy Costello, a graduate of the Theology of the Body Institute's Certification Program; Coordinator of Marriage Ministry in the Diocese of Paterson.
