The Plant All Insects FearWhen you think of a predator, you probably think

of a wolf, a shark, or a lion. However, did you know that there are plant predators too? The Venus Flytrap is one of several meat-eating plants. Its moving parts and the unique way it traps its food make it a veryspecial plant.

The Venus Flytrap’s name is not very accurate. This plant actually eats more spiders and antsthan flies. Flying insects only make up about five percent of its diet. In any case, the Venus flytrap is perfectly adapted to catching insects. The plant has special leaves that grow in pairs. Each pair is connected as if with a hinge.

On the inside of the leaf are sensor hairs or bristles. When an insect walks onto the leaf, it touches a hair. After a second touch to the hair, the leaves close tightly. This traps the insect, as interlocking teeth block the exit. Small insects can escape, but larger spiders and ants cannot. The leaves close tighter and tighter. Then, digestive juices fill the sealed leaves. The plant digests all of the soft parts of the insect. When it’s done eating, the plant opens the leaves again.

The Venus Flytrap can make its own food. So, why does it need to catch insects? The Venus Flytrap lives in areas with very poor soil. There aren’t many nutrients in the soil there. The plant adapted to get nutrients in other ways. If you ever find a Venus Flytrap, watch it for a while to see if you can observe how it catches its food.

● ask to help cook dinner.

● Sweep or vacuum the floor.

● Help wash a load of laundry, or fold laundry.

● Feed your pet.

“Mystery Science”- https://mysteryscience.com/powers/mystery-3/camouflage-animal-survival/118?r=79203425 On this website you will be able to watch a short video on, “ Camouflage” Materials: Crayons, scissors, handout, tape. Activity:

● Watch video ● Use “moth”

handout or draw your own. *Only do From Step 6 - step 12.

- Make your moth blend in well. That way nobody can find it!

● Finish video

“Step it Up”

*Complete Outside. -Warm up by running one lap in your backyard, 15 jumping jacks, 10 squats. ** Music is fun while you do this! Materials: Paper, scissors, tape, pencil, feet. Activity: 1) Trace each foot and cut them out at least six times. 2) Lay them out in a pattern. 3) tape them down 4) practice jumping on them and see how quickly you can get through to the end.

Create your own book! Materials: Use materials from around your home you're allowed to use. Be creative! ** You do not just have to write. Activity:

- Create a book with a story inside.

Examples: Maybe your book looks like your journals from school with pictures and writing, use stickers, glue stuff ...

Paper Airplane Materials: Paper ( airplane), tape, scissors Activity: 1) Create a paper airplane, place it aside. 2) Grab one connected sheet of newspaper, or you can tape sheets together, and cut holes large enough for your plane to fit through. 3) Hang it through a doorway and see if you can aim your airplane through the holes! ** You can assign points to each hole, and ask someone to play with you!

Tuesday Questions
Kristin Powell
The Venus Flytrap eats meat, including spiders, ants and flies.
Kristin Powell
First, the sensor hairs get touched by an insect. On the second touch, the leaves close tightly, trapping the insect. Then, the leaves get tighter and tighter, squeezing the insect so the plant can digest the soft parts.
Kristin Powell
KEY
Kristin Powell
Although a Venus Flytrap can make its own food, it lives in very poor soil with not enough nutrients. It needs to eat insects to get enough nutrients.
Kristin Powell
A sensor detects something, in a flytrap the hairs or bristles detect insects on the leaves.
Kristin Powell
Answers will vary, all are correct as long as students are using facts. I think that the Venus Flytrap would close on the person’s hand but let go quickly.

Explanations

1.A shape with exactly three angles is a triangle. Only shape W has exactly three angles.

2.Think of the number of angles in each shape.

So, a triangle has the least number of angles. A hexagon has the greatest number of angles. The shape names in order from least to greatest number of angles are shown.

3.A cube is a three-dimensional shape with exactly six faces. All six faces are same-size squares.

So, the shape is a cube because it has exactly six square faces.

4.A shape with exactly four sides is a quadrilateral. Only shape W has exactly four sides.

5.A quadrilateral is a closed shape with exactly four straight sides and exactly four corners.

So, the shape is a quadrilateral because it has exactly four corners.
