EVENTS & INFORMATIO N

The Stations of the Cross are a devotion dating back to the late Middle Ages, in which pilgrims to the Holy Land would follow the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem, tracing Jesus’ actual path to Mount Calvary on His last day. Eventually, the Franciscans in Europe began to build replica paths with varying numbers of stations along the roads to churches. In the eighteenth century, Pope Clement XII fixed the number of stations at fourteen and gave permission for them to be installed within churches.

There is a Plenary Indulgence available for saying the Stations of the Cross. This indulgence is not just possible on Fridays, or just during Lent, but at any time. A plenary indulgence means the complete remittance of the temporal punishment due to sin, and can be applied to oneself or the soul of a deceased person. There are necessary conditions that apply, but if all the conditions can’t be met, it becomes a partial indulgence instead of a plenary indulgence. The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence are (from The Manual of Indulgences, 1999):

To gain an indulgence, you must be a baptized Catholic, not excommunicated, and not in a state of mortal sin at the time of completing the actions performed for the indulgence.

To gain a plenary indulgence you must be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin; this means that you must be willing to resolve not to sin again, as we profess in the sacrament of Reconciliation when we recite the Act of Contrition.

You must perform the required actions, receive Holy Communion, make a sacramental confession, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.

It is preferred that you receive Communion and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father on the day you perform the actions, but it is acceptable to do so within several days before or after the day.

Confession should be made within three weeks before or after the actions of the indulgence.

The usual prayers offered for the intentions of the Holy Father are one Our Father and one Hail Mary.

One additional requirement to receive a plenary indulgence for saying the Stations of the Cross: you need to pray the Stations of the Cross in front of fourteen crosses (one per Station), and you should physically move from one to the next, if possible in the space and due to your physical abilities, while you meditate on the Passion of Jesus. This means that you can pray the Stations of the Cross anywhere to receive the plenary indulgence, not just in a church; you can easily set up crosses in your home if you want to.

O Jesus, our adorable Savior, we now contemplate Your sacred passion.

Help us to understand that the sufferings of our life are the continuation of Your passion.

We ask for strength of our souls to go through our passion, in the spirit with which You went through Yours.

Amen.

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.

"Lent is a fitting time for self-denial;

we would do well to ask ourselves what

we can give up in order to help and enrich

others by our own poverty. Let us not forget

that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real

without this dimension of penance. I distrust

a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt."

-Pope Francis
