Description:
Celebrating all things, Motherhood, this issue of I AM WOMAN is a tribute to women everywhere, but in particular Mums. We explore in-depth the ‘motherload’ – the myriad of responsibilities that women face when they have a family, a household, a relationship and a career to manage. Plus we unearth a few of those super passionate mumpreneurs who’ve managed to turn their dreams into successful businesses. We’ve also tracked down a number of experts who provide advice on how to manage it all without getting too stressed out, how to keep the kids occupied while you’re getting other stuff done, tips for helping teens to navigate their way through adolescence, especially in an age where so much of their lives are played out digitally. We look at changing family shapes and structures and societal and cultural values and uncover the truth about work-family-life balance. And, because it’s Christmas time, we’re celebrating ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ – Season’s greetings!

Editors LetterTHE THEME OF our latest edition is Motherhood & Life

Balance. Which seems like a bit of a misnomer doesn’t it? Especially when any mother will attest to the fact that

the simple act of motherhood leaves you so little time and energy for anything else that there often seems no possibility of life balance!

Motherhood & Life Balance is a topic that’s had some press in recent years and we’re exploring the theme further, because – alarmingly – despite the Feminist revolution and years of campaigning for equality (not just in the workplace), women still draw the short straw when it comes to housework, caring and career.

And history tells us that it is only by openly discussing and championing issues we really believe in, that we can evoke change. And we really must, as a society, start supporting our Mothers in a much more meaningful way than we are doing now.

There is no more powerful love than a mother’s love for her child. If this didn’t exist we wouldn’t exist. It is also true that the love and the selflessness required to raise a child can be so primal and so overpowering that some women completely lose themselves in it. I was one of these women. And yet, while I gained an extraordinary amount in return from my son, I felt a loss – of the person I was before motherhood.

In this issue, we look at this important aspect of Motherhood & Life Balance too, because the ‘loss’ doesn’t have to be a negative. It can be the momentary dark before the dawn, the start of something wonderful…. Something transformative.

There are some extremely thought provoking articles in this issue, and some very personal points of view. Each of these considers the role and the impact of motherhood in relation to other aspects of life, such as business, work, career, relationships, divorce, parenting and family values, health and wellbeing, mental and emotional health and long-term illness.

In my line of work, coaching women from all walks of life, I hear continually that the resounding pressure in trying to achieve Motherhood & Life Balance comes from the guilt that we feel, juggling all of our responsibilities and worrying that we are not

BY CATHERINE PLANO

doing justice to any of them, particularly our roles as mothers. The solution here of course is self-care. We cannot possibly be of service to others without being strong, healthy, capable, relaxed individuals ourselves, first. This is not selfish – it is necessary. But much harder to actually achieve than it is to talk about.

There’s no question that by and large the women authors of this issue agree that, as with everything else in a mother’s life, balance can only be obtained once it has been made a priority and has been given focus, time and planning.

In a quest to find their own sense of Motherhood & Life Balance (which is never a concrete proposition, rather a flexible and sometimes fleeting state that has a tendency to change from moment to moment!) our writers share their experiences and their insights.

I know you’ll enjoy reading what they have to say.

IAW: What’s your secret for remembering everything? Do you write lists? Do you have a white board? What works for you?

KL: I don’t remember, I haven’t even remembered to buy a calendar for this year yet… and it is past half-way through … Basically, my husband does a lot of remembering… He really is a great guy. I forget his name.

IAW: Kids are so unpredictable. Imagine this scenario – Suddenly someone’s got a temperature and diarrhea. This means no school and plans for the day need to be changed. How do you cope? Do you have a strong network of family and friends you can call on to assist?

KL: We are incredibly lucky to have family who are willing and able to help. My in-laws and my parents are both on hand … and my husband is self-employed which gives us a lot of flexibility around situations we just haven’t planned for.

IAW: Do Peter and yourself get any time to just be alone together? How do you make sure you keep your connection strong?

KL: Peter and I try to have a late Sunday lunch together, after my 7-year-old’s footy game. One of my favourite things to do is to get a babysitter on a Sunday afternoon so we can fly unencumbered out of the house like lovebirds.

IAW: Do you find time for yourself? What’s your favourite thing to do when you do?

KL: I find the whole notion of ‘time for yourself’ is a bit of a trap when you’re a Mum. Basically, if I claim some time for myself, I have to rebuild the house of cards that has collapsed! I think many parents feel this way... That said, when it’s all about me, I love to take a long bath, and then laze on the couch with some Amy Schumer on telly.

IAW: Juggling it all – marriage, family, career. When it gets hectic what’s your number one stress buster?

KL: ANGER! Ha Haha Hahhahaha… (insert psychotic laughter here). Seriously, this year I have started going to the gym two or three times a week, just for half an hour or so. I’ve noticed that I feel great afterwards (when it’s over!) so it helps, I guess. But life is constantly changing so you’ve just got to go with the ups and the downs. [IAW]
