Dear Parents
Our Thai visitor Mr Thanawut Manyaem thoroughly enjoyed his stay in
Australia, especially his time with Jarod Ryan. He said a highlight was
visiting the Ryan family in Colbinabbin and seeing Jarod's father shear a
sheep. He was very impressed with all he saw at Donburn and commented
on the dedication of the teachers and the teaching style, particularly the
engagement and motivation of all the students. We look forward to the
continued contact and collaboration with our Thai colleague.
The fun and hands on numeracy activities in classes throughout the school
last week was a great way to celebrate Literacy & Numeracy Week. The
students enjoyed moving around different classrooms participating in a
variety of games and activities.
The rubbish free lunch was a huge success. The students were very proud
of their ability to have virtually no rubbish in their classroom bins!
Congratulations to
Tammy Muller and
her team of
dedicated helpers. The trivia night was a fabulous success.
Everyone enjoyed the evening and there was lots of talk from
parents at school on Monday discussing the fun. Hopefully this
will become an annual event.
If you have an opportunity please visit the general office area to
see the beautiful fairy tale projects that the Foundation students
completed at home. The students are very proud of their efforts
and the older students are enjoying looking at them.

During Book Week on the 18th and 20
th August we had a visit from the popular author, Jen Storer.
Jen visited the years 3-6 students at Donburn. She ran a writing workshop where students were given the chance to use their imaginations to create their own characters and write a story in a unique way. Then students had a chance to share their writing and it was so fascinating to listen to such a diverse range of stories. Then the children were given the chance to ask Jen questions and get copies of her book personally signed. Overall it was a great chance for students to be inspired to write and learn about the life of this bubbly and lovely author.
Then on the 28
th August we had a visit from Craig Smith, the popular children’s author and
entertainer. He performed with his guitar and sang his famous Wonkey Donkey song along with some bonus stories. The children were very excited and all loved to sing and dance and a few lucky students got to use some animal puppets to entertain the audience. Then Craig signed copies of his Wonkey Donkey books.
Overall it was a great few days and a really great chance for the children to be inspired and entertained by such lovely authors. Happy reading and Donburn students keep using your amazing imaginations to write wonderful stories! Andrea
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY
On Thursday 28 August, Craig Smith came to
Donburn. He is a famous author and he is also a songwriter and a great musician. He has really long, curly hair. Craig Smith can play the guitar and sing really well. He can also play the harmonica. Craig Smith wrote The Wonky Donkey, Wilby the Bumblebee, All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth, Where’s Banana?, My Daddy Ate an Apple, Square Eyes and lots of other great kids’ books. Lots of children were chosen to go up and be page turners and puppeteers. It was great seeing Craig Smith perform in person. He was very good and very funny. He taught us how to do a funny pop sound. His girlfriend dressed up as a monkey and stole his sunglasses. Everybody laughed. Craig Smith sings his books instead of reading them. It was great fun. At the end we got to ask Craig questions. We found out that he gets a lot of ideas for his stories from his own life. The performance was amazing. We loved it!! By 1V
Craig Smith is funny! He sang lots of funny songs and he used funny voices. He had helpers and puppeteers to tickle the audience with his puppets. He could make a water drop sound with his mouth, he tried to teach us but it is very tricky to do! His new book is called Square Eyes and he sang the song to us. It was a great morning. By 2T
Year 2O really enjoyed the visit from author Craig Smith. We liked that he sang and played his guitar to share his stories with us. It was great that we were involved in his performances by holding the stories that were read and being puppeteers. By 2O
We loved having Craig Smith come to our school last week. We enjoyed singing and dancing to all of his songs. Our favourite songs were Willbee the Bumblebee, The Wonky Donkey and Square Eyes because they are so funny! It was also really funny when Margaret pretended to be the monkey! By Foundation W
Foundation P loved the performance by Craig Smith; he was a very funny man and a great singer! We had lots of fun during the performance and we enjoyed singing along with Craig and Margaret. Some people got to be puppeteers and they wandered through the audience with the donkey from the story "Wonky Donkey". Our favourite song was the "Wonky Donkey". When we got back to our classroom we read the story again and tried to sing it really fast like Craig Smith! Unfortunately he was much faster at singing it than us! We all had a wonderful time! By Foundation P
Last Thursday we got to meet Craig Smith who wrote the 'Wonky Donkey'. We liked listening to all the books as songs, it was so much fun! We loved it when Margaret dressed up as a Monkey and tricked Craig, it was so funny. We loved listening to the raindrop song because of the cool noise that Craig can make with his mouth! We hope he comes back soon! By Foundation Q
1D were amazed that Craig Smith has written so many books. He sang all the words in his books and played his guitar. Craig also made funny noises with his mouth. Margaret did actions and we copied. She also wore a monkey mask and jumped around. Craig told us that he practiced his guitar every day. Some students were asked to use his puppets and walk around tickling everyone. We really liked his books titled `My Daddy Ate an Apple’ and `Wonky Donkey’. Ayden got to turn the pages of the book titled `Wonky Donkey’. We had a really fun time listening to him!

On Thursday the 28 August, Craig Smith
came to Donburn Primary School to perform for the Foundation – 2 students. Craig Smith is the author of The Wonky Donkey and also 5 other books. He sang his stories because all his story books are actually songs. Year 1R thought that he was brilliant! He sang very fast and he told funny stories, he also made funny sounds. We would LOVE to have him back for Book Week next year!! By Year 1R
We had lots of fun on Numeracy Day! Our favourite activities were making 3D shape monsters with Miss Quilligan and measuring with Miss Thompson. Miss Wightman’s magic Maths trick was also really cool! We loved working with other people from different grades. We wish we could do Maths groups every day!
By Foundation W
To help celebrate Literacy and Numeracy week, Foundation to Year 2 students participated in a range of fun Mathematics activities. The students from Year 20 enjoyed maths games, 3D monsters, Tangrams, maths puzzles, learning about Chance and making yummy play dough pizza fractions for our family members. We also learnt that the world’s largest banana was 60cm! We had a great day and hope to have a whole maths day again. By 2 O’Reilly
Last Friday, Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 formed mixed groups and we went to a lot of different classrooms to do Maths activities. We used tangrams to make animals and other shapes. We talked about fractions and made fractions with play dough. Other fun activities we did were big jig-saw puzzles, making 3D monsters and playing fun, tricky Maths games. We got to see lots of other students and teachers too. We even made some new friends. We all had a really happy and exciting day. We loved having a Numeracy Day and hope that we can do it again. By 1D
Numeracy Day at Donburn was fun! Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students had a very special Numeracy Day on Friday 29 August. We went around to all the different classes and did lots of Maths activities like: Counting, Tangrams, Maths Games, Measuring, and making Pizza with Play dough. It was lots of fun and we also learnt lots too. It was great because we were mixed with all the other kids from Foundation – Year 2. We hope we can have another Numeracy Day next Term! By Year 1R
Last Friday, all children in Foundation to 2 participated in Donburn’s Numeracy Day. We did lots of fun activities such as making 3D Monsters, Puzzles, Maths Games, Playdough Pizza Fractions, Measuring and Tangrams. It was a fantastic day. We were all in different groups with children from other grades and each group got to do six activities. There were lots of personal favourites. Everyone cooperated with each other and worked really well on all the activities. The teachers were very proud of us. They said we were so good that we can do it again another time. We hope so because we all loved it. We are all excellent Mathematicians! By 1V
Maths Day was awesome! We moved to different grades to work with different teachers to do Maths activities. It was fun because we got to work with Foundation and Year 1 students as well. Making 3D shape monsters was fun, measuring the largest things in the world was interesting, making pizzas was super, the tangrams were challenging but enjoyable, the puzzles were excellent and playing Maths games was fun. The teachers had a great day too! By 2 Thompson
Foundation P had the most fantastic day on Friday celebrating Numeracy Day. We loved all of the Maths activities and games. Some of our favourite games were the measuring activities where we had to measure how long bugs and worms are. We had lots of fun in Mrs Valkenburg’s class making play dough pizzas and sausages. We enjoyed playing the heads and tails chance game in Miss O'Reilly’s grade too! Miss Wightman impressed us with some really cool magic dice tricks. We loved working with all of the different teachers too! We would all love to have another Numeracy Day with all of the grades because it was so much fun. By Foundation P.
Foundation Q had an awesome time celebrating Numeracy Day last Friday. We especially loved measuring things, making play dough pizzas, shape monsters and Miss Wightmans magic tricks! We liked making new friends and getting to know more teachers! We want to do it every Friday! We would love to do it again! By Foundation Q
Congratulations to the whole school for preparing such delicious and creative ‘rubbish free’ lunches! It was great to see everyone get involved and help make a change to the amount of waste our school produces. Just a small change can make a huge difference! Here are some of the lunches we ate on the day.

SPORTS NEWS
Hockey 7’s On Wednesday the 27th of August, the Girls Hockey 7’s team participated in the Eastern Metropolitan Regional finals. We played 3 matches. Against PLC we lost 3-0. It was a very hard match. We won 5-0 against Serpell PS, which is an improvement as the last time we played them we lost 3-1. Margaret P returned after Somers camp and made a huge impact in defence. Against Mont Albert PS, we won 7-0. It was a fun match and we scored easily. We thought that we would not progress to the next round as we had lost 1 and won 2 games. However, Serpell defeated PLC and we got through because of our excellent percentage (400%). The day was fantastic. We learnt so much about the game and what it takes to play well as a team. We are looking forward to representing Donburn at State level next Thursday in Footscray. Hopefully we will be successful. Thank you Ms Papamichael for always being there for us. You are a big part of our success. Thank you also to Kerry Brown and Holly Tidd who transported us to the ground. From the Hockey team

Please check the sports noticeboard located near the main office or see me for any additional information. The school team will be selected from the day’s results in the following age groups: 12/13 years, 11 years and 9/10 years. The District competition is on Tuesday, 18 September.

Saturday 30th August saw Donburn Host the 1
st Trivia Night since 2007. We had a great turn out and
many people embraced their table allocated letters ‘H’, ‘T’, ‘P’, ‘O’, ‘W’, ‘B’, ‘F’, ‘M’ & ‘S’ and dressed up for the occasion. The night was a huge success and created a wonderful social environment for all attending. Congratulations to Table ‘W’ for taking out the win thanks to some impressive Bonus round activities and to Table ‘T’ for your Wooden Spoon performance. I wish to thank a group of amazing parents for their support and assistance over the past few months. Their efforts helped bring all the pieces together for this night. A lot of preparation goes on behind the scenes to co-ordinate these types of events and they simply don’t happen without such dedication and enthusiasm. I won’t individually mention each person as all contributions are appreciated and I would feel terrible to have missed someone. I’m sure you guys know who you are. P & F wish to say thank you to the generosity of families in the school, local businesses and some wonderful community groups. Because of them we were able to run a raffle, some lucky envelopes, a Silent Auction and provide some great prizes to those in attendance. Thanks also goes to Julie, Lynette and the teachers for their support through the preparations and also on the night. Congratulations to Andrew from AnJ Entertainment for being a fantastic Trivia Host and keeping the room entertained all evening. www.anjentertainment.com.au/trivia We raised approximately $3,800 from the night. Hosts for International Students
We are currently refreshing our list of Homestay Providers for our International Student Program.
You must be English-speaking, willing to help the student(s) adjust to life in Australia and improve
their English through a variety of means. Some of our current hosts provide daily conversation, homework
assistance, watching Australian television and reading through an English novel or magazine together. You will act in a semi-parental
role and keep the school informed about any welfare issues. As a host of a student under 18, you will need a Working with Children’s
Check. You will also be given lots of support and 24/7 access to the International Student Coordinator.
We need homes within walking distance or with good transport access to the school and students must have their own room,
furnished with bed, cupboard/wardrobe, desk, chair and lamp.
The benefits to you are that you can share in the life of a young person, playing a role in their successes in life and learn more about
the world. They will pay generously for their accommodation.
Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like an application form.
