From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

APRIL 30, 2017

My Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel recounts the apparition of Jesus to

two disciples going from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. Notice how our bodies after the resur rection, like Jesus’ risen body, can be transformed in any way we wish. Notice also that the disciples recognized Jesus only at one point: THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD, which is the old name of the Eucharist celebration (Mass). When people ask you: “Why do you go to Mass? I can pray at home!” Our answer is that only in the Eucharistic Celebration our spiritual blindness ends, and we will see and touch and receive Jesus in our hearts, bodies and minds. Countless times, people have told me why they came back home to the Catholic Church, after roaming many other churches and watching many eloquent televangelists; they say: “I missed the real physical embrace of Jesus in Holy Communion.”

When we receive Jesus, for the few precious minutes until the Body of Christ dissolves and becomes us, we are anticipating Paradise where we will forever live with Jesus in His glory! We can pray to God everywhere, but only at Mass do we become one with God, Body and Soul!

Another main reason why we receive the sacraments is because we are CATHOLIC, which means that we follow ALL (“Catholikos” in Greek) Jesus’ commands, such as “Baptize them”… “Forgive each other’s sins”… “Do this in my memory”… and so forth and so on.

We do not pick and choose what we want from Jesus’ teachings; we do observe and obey ALL of them.

We greatly appreciate the generosity of those parishioners who have pledged and given to the 2017 Catholic Faith Appeal. Our goal is $332,000. You dear parishioners, as of 4/16/17, have pledged $248,570.73. You represent only 18.2% of our registered households. If all households pledged the price of a cup of Starbucks each week, we would be over goal and the parish receives all the “over goal” gifts for its needs.

You embody the compassionate Catholic spirit of St. Martha Church. Remember, among many other things, that your gift to the Catholic Faith Appeal supports the taping and airing of the diocesan TV Mass for thousands of people in homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, prisons, and hospitals who are unable to attend Mass. This is a great comfort to them.

CFA envelopes are in the pews for your convenience. Please include your name on this envelope, and make checks payable to: CFA - St. Martha. Your help is appreciated.

Bishop Frank Dewane invites the Catholic community to join him at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 30, at Epiphany Cathedral, for an Hour of Remembrance, “Yom Hashoah,” commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The guest speaker will be my good friend Rabbi Howard A. Simon who has served for many years in building interreligious dialogue in our city. Parishioners are encouraged to attend this historical hour of remembrance to help keep the Holocaust a part of our collective memory. This diocesan Yom Hashoah will bring together members of the Jewish and Christian

PSALTER WEEK III

communities, as encouraged by the Holy Father, to remember the victims of hate, and to help build a climate of respect where such tragedies may never again be possible.

Next Sunday, May 7, is the 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, also known as “Good Shepherd Sunday. Pope Francis has chosen the theme: “Led by the Spirit for Mission” The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray

that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. Tomorrow, we begin one of the most beautiful months of the year, May, dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Let us honor her memory with a daily sacrifice to practice self-control, and to

follow Jesus more closely. The ancient friars used to say: “Ad Jesum per Mariam,” which translates: let us reach Jesus with the help of Mary. Mary’s statue will remain in the sanctuary throughout the month, reminding us to pay homage to her with the daily rosary. In my Catholic school, when I was young, all of us pupils had to write little notes with our daily sacrifices and put the notes in a box. These notes were burned in front of the statue of Mary at the end of the month to signify that now all those prayers and sacrifices went up to heaven and were written in the Book of Life. Let us make our month of May truly special, not letting a day pass without special homage to Our Mother in Heaven, and to her son, Jesus.

The Crumpets and Tea Fashion Show was a great success, under the able leadership of Sabrina Gibson, our Church Staff, and the fabulous committee! Sabrina is expressing a special THANK YOU to our Caritas volunteers, parishioners, families and friends who contributed to this event. We appreciate every kindness, gift, monetary donation and prayer which made our Caritas fundraiser a success. Thank you to our Fashion Sponsors including: Ana Molinari Boutique; Kathleen Collins, a local designer at Ritz-Carlton; Dr. Steven Bovia from Gulfcoast Eye Center; Island Fresh of Anna Maria Island; O’Blanc Designs by Liliya Kent at Parker Robinson. Our generous Sponsors: Church of The Redeemer, Cookie Cottage, Boca Bargoons Fabrics, Detwiler’s Farm Market, Sift Bakehouse, St. Martha School, The Tea House and Yoder’s Amish Restaurant. We are grateful for the entertainment by The School of Russian Ballet Dancers. A special thanks to our classy ladies and gentlemen who modeled some exiting dresses and suits, starting with a funny “untucked” clerical shirt by yours truly! Altogether, this first “Crumpets & Tea Fashion Show” promises to be a new tradition for our parish for years to come! May God reward all of you who participated, actively, served at and attended!

Today is Caritas Sunday, and our Car itas volunteers will be at the church doors seeking your donations to help them to continue to assist the needy of our area. This past month, you donated $5225. Thank you and please be generous once again this month.

If you are new to our St. Martha, once you are settled into your new home, if you wish, call on a clergyman, deacon or priest to bless your home or condo,

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER MAY 1

Although popular devotion to Joseph, husband of Mary, began in the West as early as the eighth century, it was not until the fifteenth century that his name was

entered in the Church calendar, with his primary feast on March 19. Since that time, devotion to Joseph has been marked by growing enthusiasm and, in 1955, Pope Pius XII proclaimed a second feast day in his honor: May 1, Labor Day in many countries. A skilled craftsman or carpenter, Joseph is a model for all working people who are dignified by their labor as they provide for their households and bring Christ into their workplace. " Lord, you will show us the path of life."

(Psalm 16:11)

Give me your grace, good Lord, to walk the narrow way that leads to life, to bear the cross with Christ; to have ever before my eye my death that is ever at hand; to pray for pardon before the Judge come, to have continually in mind the passion that Christ suffered for me; for his benefits unceasingly to give him thanks, and buy the time again that I before have lost. Amen. St. Thomas More

I SEE JESUS IN EVERY HUMAN BEING Today’s Gospel Reading recounts Jesus’ appearance to two disciples who were on the road to Emmaus. In various scriptural passages, there are 12 accounts of Jesus

appearing in the flesh, a few times to just one person, but once to 500 people (1 Corinthians 15: 6). What is interesting about today’s account is the two, although evidently familiar with the Lord, do not recognize Him (“…their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.”). This is a challenge for us today as well. St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) once wrote, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus; I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.” That should be our motivation for serving, for being a disciple, for practicing stewardship. Like the two disciples going to Emmaus we must be alert and prepared to see Jesus in places we least imagine Him. Stewardship is, of course, a two-sided perspective. Not only do we need to seek and search for Jesus in others and then serve, but also others need to see and recognize Jesus in us. If we properly live out our faith, we, too, may experience the sense of joy and ecstasy the two disciples found in today’s Gospel: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened Scriptures to us?” Jesus speaks to us every day, but we must learn to listen. The original Greek word for what we read as “throes of death” could also be translated as “the birth pains of death.” Jesus’ resurrection is as if He was in the womb, and being raised in this way He was born to new life. That is what we, too, can expect and hope for.
