Dearly Beloved in Christ, In these days of this great pandemic COVID-19 we are hearing that religion is worthless and also we have found people saying being a religious is of no use. I saw a message which narrates a dialog of Satan telling God “I have closed all your churches through this disease” to which God responds “but I have opened a church in every family”. This is the powerful message of a Christian to the world, as St. Paul says “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38,39. The world thinks Jesus is a miracle performer; and they believe that when this COVID-19 kills good and innocent people and when the churches remain closed, they think that Jesus, the miracle God, is out of context and he is of no use. But for us Christians Jesus is not a miracle performer rather he is our father, the one who is always with us. We Christians have a lot of questions in our heart. Why is God allowing this to happen? Is not God able to stop this? Is God punishing us? The answer will be honestly saying, “we don’t know” to the first question with the biblical teaching from the book of Job. “Look, God is greater than we can understand.” Job 36, 26 One thing we have to believe is “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. The last question is always a BIG NO. God is not punishing us through this disease because he can’t do that. He is the Lord who forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34. Even though this is a very heart breaking time, with a lot of people in hospitals, a lot of good people dead and the whole humanity waiting for their turn, these times are bringing a lot of good things. We are learning to be with family, spend time talking with family members. We started eating food cooked at home, we came to know more about us, we prayed together as a family, we ate together. No sounds of cars, bus etc, nature started respiring. The whole world feels the same. And together we all pray for one thing, this pandemic should go away. And the slogan that we all say in our heart is all will be ok. As Christian families we are obliged to lift our faith and show the world the Lord we worship. We are not just ritual celebrators, rather we are the followers of Jesus who asked us to love everyone in this world. We live faith in our family through prayers led by the family, accompanied with a sharing of the Bible, eating together, spending time with the family, having fun with kids, working together. Now it's the time to show the world the responsibility of a Christian family in this time. We have a special call. Jesus calls us to feed the people. Luke 9 :13 Jesus told them, "You give them something to eat." Yes, we have to find food for the people around us, and we should be able to know whether our neighbor has something to eat. I came across a message demonstrating at the end of this pandemic there will be more people dead of hunger than corona. What a sad reality….. this is where we Christians should stand up and show our faith. Don’t close yourself in social media. Come forward helping the people with food and essential items. At the same time we have to abide by the laws of the state and the nation. Taking care of us and taking care of our loved ones. Living Christian faith in this pandemic doesn’t finish with watching online Holy Mass, prayer service and responding AMEN. Rather this century calls us to be the witness of Jesus who just lived as a MAN and told us very strongly to hold your faith and fight forever, because I am sleeping in your boat, I will respond. But before that comfort of your fellow being in your boat: some are strong, some are weak, strengthen the weak give them what they need and don’t give up your hope. The TIDE will turn. Mark 4:35-41 AMEN. Have a good week. Fr. Tom

Parish Mission Statement

We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

Reflection during these trying times, by Grace Kengle ‘There is a season for everything, A time for giving birth, A time for dying; A time for tears, A time for laughter; A time for mourning, A time for dancing…’

Ecclesiastes 3:1, 2, 4 I lost my youngest brother last February. We thought he was recovering from his stroke, it was with cardiac arrest that we lost him. He was loved, liked and admired. It was very hard for our family. It was very hard for me. I made it just on time to arrive back in Reno before all the lockdown. A time for tears and mourning as I empathize with our fellowmen who lost their loved ones, their jobs or the security they had in the past. It was a time for me to think about death, and heaven. How beautiful it must be. But it does not take away the deep pain and loss that I felt. I just stood there at the foot of the Cross. It is dark. It is deep. It is death itself. I dove in my emotions, I let it take me to where I don’t really want to go, it was a heavy, tiring and painful journey. I stayed there and acknowledged GRIEF. He seems ruthless in the beginning but tenderly kind once I opened myself to him. In accepting my own death, because a big part of me died with my brother, I experienced resurrection, only with the grace of God. My dear friends, be patient as we choose loving and lifegiving choices during this pandemic. The Saints remind us: ‘All shall be well.’ And we shall rejoice and dance again. Happy Mother’s Day.

WISHING A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL OUR MOTHERS

A MESSAGE DURING THE PANDEMIC FROM DEACON GIL During this time, I believe that the primary ministry that we all have is to take care to follow the guidelines given to us by Governor Sisolak and the experts who are helping us to know how to keep others safe from COVID-19. Our children and I are staying home and with family as much as possible, being careful when we have to leave to socially distance, wear masks, keeping our hands washed and so on. Right now, I believe that our primary ministry to one another is the most basic of all things we can do. Don’t get someone else sick.

I have tried to reach out to people I know who might need a phone call, an email or a text, just something to help with loneliness or isolation, for people I know who are lonely or isolated. I spend a lot of time in prayer, particularly the Liturgy of the Hours. I miss being able to go to mass but I watch the liturgies on the parish website as a way to feel connected to our community.

May 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The struggle to receive basic pastoral care and catechesis is faced by thousands of faithful living in home mission dioceses here in the United States.

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps ease that struggle through grants that support priestly and religious vocations, faith formation, and education for leaders to attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. A mission diocese must often contend with high rates of poverty and a lack of educated pastoral and lay leadership. With your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal can continue to provide essential pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses. Please be generous in the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you. God Bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo Bishop of Reno

This collection is May 9th & 10th.

Dear Parish Family: Patty and I hope all is well with you during our social distancing. We miss you and look forward to the day soon when we will be joined together at Sunday Liturgy, celebrating in Eucharist as a family with a great Amen. We pray and hope that everyone comes through faith experience of separation and suffering with deeper appreciation of what our God is calling us to experience. Patty and I have treated this time as a retreat experience. I didn't realize since I have been retired how busy I am with Church activities. So, I have been slowing down in my eating, talking, listening, thinking and I can still sense my mind wanting me to be busy! Patty says, "during social distancing I am becoming more aware of how precious life is; that I want to be conscious of who I am in my relationship with others. Most of all, I know in my heart--how much each one is loved and known by our God." As our journey continues with God we have adapted to zoom prayer meetings. We have participated with 59 countries and 3,500 people praising and honoring God in a zoom meeting. What changes is your God calling you to and how will you adapt to answer God's calling? We send our love, support and blessings to our parish family. Dennis & Patty By waiting and by calm you are saved. In quiet and trust your strength lies. Isaiah 30:15

“The month of May is a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the

pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view. For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow… I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. Dear brothers and sister, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me.” Pope Francis

May 2020 St. Teresa School News Wow, who every expected our fourth quarter to begin like this!! As of March 13 our school lives were drastically altered. We are continuing our stellar education but it certainly looks different than the last three quarters. The teachers have embraced the concept of distance learning and are continuing to keep our students moving forward academically, albeit on line. We are continuing to teach using Zoom, loom, google classroom. Although the day looks different, learning continues. The toughest part of

this online learning is the lack of social interaction for the kids. They miss their teachers, classmates, playing on the playground. Although they zoom with each other it just isn’t the same for them. It is certainly a learning curve for our parents too. The hallways are hushed and quiet. The Daughters of Charity sisters are probably wondering where the kids are!! We are looking forward to the day when school can resume and we can all be back to the classrooms, and attend Mass together. In the meantime, we are all staying safe and praying that everyone in our parish is too. Thank you for your continued support of St. Teresa School by continuing to donate to the second collection ($2900 wow!!) and for your prayers. We really appreciate you.

Peggy Burger, Principal

We pray this week finds you all well and doing okay with the sheltering in. Our St. Teresa RCIA Ministry continues to meet weekly through Zoom. This week we focused on our relationship with Jesus. This is an area we stress through this faith journey. We know that as we develop this relationship we learn more about our faith and get a deeper understanding of what God is asking of us. We participated in a “Mini Zoom Retreat” that was based on our own understanding of this relationship as it pertains to each one of us. The retreat included music,

Holy Scripture, a quote from Pope Francis, a guided meditation as well as some reflection. Sometimes it is important to just be with Jesus and that is what we hoped our Elect, Candidates and Sponsors got from this retreat. During this time when we are not able to join together to celebrate the Mass or meet in person we hope you to are able to just be with Jesus and think about what He is asking of you. We would like to thank you for all of your prayers as our Elect and Candidates wait patiently until they can be fully initiated into the Catholic faith. Tina Akerley RCIA Director

“WISE WORDS”

In life, some may walk, others may run, but remember the Lord gave the tortoise and the horse the same days to reach Noah's ark. Your journey might be rough and tough but you will definitely get to your destination. Jacob looked at Joseph and saw a good son! The ten brothers looked at Joseph and saw a useless dreamer! The travelers looked at Joseph and saw a slave!! Potiphar looked at Joseph and saw a fine servant!! Potiphar's wife looked at Joseph and saw a potential boyfriend! The prison officers saw in Joseph a prisoner! How wrong were all of them! God looked at Joseph and saw a Prime Minister of Egypt in waiting!!

Don't be discouraged by what people see in you!! Be encouraged by what God sees in you!! Never underrate the person next to you because you never know what the Lord has deposited in that person. Your maid may be a Chief Executive Officer in waiting for a company which shall employ your child. Your garden-boy may be a president in waiting. (Remember David got the anointing of becoming a King while he was a simple child herding sheep. Esther was a simple orphaned girl yet she was a Queen in waiting). Let's share God's love and make the world a better place to live. Show that love by sharing this message with those you love. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW PEOPLE SEE YOU, IT MATTERS HOW GOD SEES YOU God is God: He doesn't care about “age”, no wonder he blessed Abraham. He doesn't care about “experience”, no wonder he chose David. He doesn't care about “gender”, no wonder he lifted Esther. He doesn't care about “our past”, no wonder he called Paul. He doesn't care about “your physical appearance”, no wonder he chose Zacchaeus (the shortest one). He doesn't care about “fluency in speech”, no wonder he chose Moses. He doesn't care about “your career”, no wonder he choose Mary Magdalene; a prostitute. All I know is that my God never changes He never made “a promise he wouldn't keep”!! He never saw “a person he wouldn't help”!! He never heard “a prayer he wouldn't answer”!! He never found “a soul he wouldn't love”!! He never found “a sinner he wouldn't forgive”!! This is the kind of God I would like to commune with every day the moment I wake up. I strongly recommend Him to you. Fr.Tom Babu
