Small Sacrifices Make a Large Impact

“No one shall appear before the Lord empty-handed, but each of you with as much as he can give, in propor-tion to the blessings which the Lord, your God, has bestowed on you.”

(Deuteronomy 16: 16-17)

W e are close to wrapping up our

involvement in the Diocesan-wide

Centennial Campaign: Building Our Future

Together. We need every parishioner to

prayerfully consider how your family can

participate in this historic effort.

The past couple of weeks you have learned

more about the Centennial Campaign, and

perhaps spoke with a campaign volunteer

about participating in the campaign.

At all Masses next weekend, we will invite

parishioners who have not yet made their

sacrificial gift in support of the Centennial

Campaign to do so. Please give very careful

consideration to a five-year pledge. Every gift

is welcome and needed. Every gift will help St.

Mary Mother of the Church meet the needs of

both our parish and the Diocese.

We are grateful to the families who have

already made their pledge. Our Participation

Goal is for at least 350 families to make a

Pledge. It is only through the sacrificial

generosity of all of us that we can truly reach

our goal. Please submit a Pledge!

1) Read the campaign materials.

2) Pray with your family about your pledge to the campaign.

3) Be prepared to complete a form next weekend.

How Much to Pledge?

How Do I Prepare for Commitment Weekend?

The St. Mary Parish Centennial Campaign Coordinating Committee suggests that parishioners consider pledging 25% of what they usually contribute to St. Mary Parish. Here are some examples

using this guideline when deciding how much to pledge to the Centennial Campaign:

$50 per month to St. Mary, you would pledge to the

Centennial Campaign for five years.

If you typically donate $100 per month to St. Mary, you would pledge $25.00 per month to the

Centennial Campaign for five years.

If you typically donate $200 per month to St. Mary, you would pledge $50.00 per month to the

Centennial Campaign for five years.

OFFICE OF THE BISHOP TO BE READ AT ALL MASSES OCTOBER 22 & 23

October 10, 2016

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In a short time, we will all have the opportunity to elect new leaders for our nation, state and local communities. The right to vote is a cherished right, won by the sacrifices of many men and women who have served our country in the past and the founders who established our Constitution.

As citizens of the United States, we have a duty to vote, a moral obligation to improve the community in which we live and to elect good leaders who make good and just laws that protect the rights and freedoms of all. St. Paul even told the early Christians to be good citizens of the Roman Empire and to give good example by their lives.

The Catholic Church does not endorse any candidate or political party. Each Catholic should inform themselves of the positions held by the various candidates and vote for those who most closely reflect the values and moral teaching that we as Catholics believe build a good and just society. There can be differences of opinions about how that is best achieved.

For us as Catholics and for all people of good will, the following are beliefs that are non-negotiable:

• The reverence and sacredness of every human being from conception, in the womb until natural death because the human person is created in the image and likeness of God.

• The right to life of every child in the womb. • The sacredness of the family as the basic building block of society. • The definition of Christian marriage as the permanent union of one man and one woman

open to new life. • The right of the human person to decent housing and employment at a just wage. • The just and fair treatment of immigrants who come to our country to seek a better life for

themselves and their families.

These are values which we believe improve our society and preserve our civilization. I pray that each Catholic in the Diocese of Lafayette will take their duty to vote seriously and exercise that duty. May the Holy Spirit guide us all as we seek the will of God and build a just society for all citizens of the United States.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Most Reverend J. Douglas Deshotel, D.D. Bishop of Lafayette
