33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) Eternal Happiness with God

Pastor’s Corner We are coming to the end of the liturgical year and the Church wishes to

remind us of our final end, the final end of creation. This week’s gospel lets us

know that after certain apocalyptic signs we shall see “the Son of Man coming

in the clouds with great power and glory.” Faced with such expectations we

can ask ourselves: what is our final end? Why do we exist? When we were

little, the catechism taught us: “We exist to serve God in this life, so that we

can see Him and be joyful with Him in the next.” That is our final end, unless

we are unfaithful to the values Jesus taught and we lose it, to enjoy the eternal

happiness that God has promised us.

Today I want to thank all of you for the great generosity you show during our

annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in behalf of the Grove Outreach and the

migrants living the Homestead area.

Fr. Federico

P. Federico

PS: I’d like to remind you of our upcoming St. Hugh-Steinway Concert, this

Friday, November 20. I’m looking forward to seeing you there as we build

community.

noviembre. Me encantaría verlos allá fortaleciendo nuestra comunidad.

Page 6 St. Hugh

St. Hugh of Lincoln St. Hugh of Lincoln was born in Avalon, Burgundy, in 1140, of a noble family. He was educated and made his profession at the priory of Augustinian canons at Villarbenoît. Hugh joined (c.1160) the Carthusians at age 25, rising to become procurator general. About 1176 he was, at the request of King Henry II, sent to England to become Abbot of the first Carthusian monastery in England. This had been built by King Henry II as part of his penance for the murder of Thomas Becket. His reputation for holiness and sanctity spread all over England and attracted many to the monastery. He admonished Henry for keeping Sees vacant to enrich the royal coffers. Income from the vacant Sees went to the royal treasury. He was then named bishop of the eighteen year old vacant See of Lincoln in 1186 - a post he accepted only when ordered to do so by the prior of the Grande Chartreuse. Hugh quickly restored clerical discipline, labored to restore religion to the diocese, and became known for his wisdom and justice. He was one of the leaders in denouncing the persecution of the Jews that swept England, 1190-91, repeatedly facing down armed mobs and making them release their victims. He went on a diplomatic mission to France for King John in 1199, visiting the Grande Chartreuse, Cluny, and Citeaux, and returned from the trip in poor health. A few months later, while attending a national council in London, he was stricken and died two months later at the Old Temple in London on November 16, 1200. He was canonized twenty years later, in 1220, the first Carthusian to be so honored.

SAN HugO DE Lincoln

REPORT FROM OUR MINISTRIES

Grove for Ghana

Grove for Ghana is pleased to report that, thanks to the abundant generosity of the St. Hugh community, we raised more than $25,000 at the annual dinner held on October 23. Still more important than the amount raised in support of our sisters and brothers in Goaso, Ghana, we celebrate two other results : 1. We had a great time coming together as a community and enjoying our shared meal and fun; and, 2. We continue our vital support to those in need in rural Africa, an expression of our belief in the communion of saints. If you missed it, we hope you will join us next year – or before. For specific details of income and expenses (we are proud of our frugality), to be added to our email list, or to become involved, contact Bob Dudley 305 962-3651.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Create a memorial fund in memory of a loved one. You may wish to establish an ongoing fund which can be added to each year, or make a one time gift. Memorial gifts that help fund an endowment provide lasting benefits from one generation to the next. To find out how you can honor a loved one, contact the rectory or call the Office of Planned Giving at (305) 762-1110.

All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church

celebrated annually on November 1. In commemoration of

this day, the first grade students dressed as their favorite

saints, prepared posters titled “My Favorite Saint”, and

gave an oral presentation in their class. The student body

along with their teachers, and parents, enjoyed seeing

them as they paraded down the school hall to the song,

“When the Saints Go Marching In.” It was a beautiful

event and touching moment to see the children dressed in

their saint costumes.
