    Solution Development Tools

Solution development tools are developed to easilyfacilitate problem solving. Examples of solutiondevelopment tools are: tree diagram, prioritization matrixand the Process Decision Program Chart (PDPC).These

tools are used by middle and top management oforganizations to find the cause of the problem and theirsolutions. These type of tools help in problem prioritizationand it also provide strategic plans in solving conflicts(problems). It is oriented towards assisting the teams in

finding solutions and innovative management ideas. Thesetools are used along with brainstorming by teams ofemployees. The tools are meant for improving theprocesses and systems within the organization or group.

    Tree Diagram

    used in strategic decision making

Used to breakdown broad categories into finer

    and finer levels of detail

Starts at a single node, with branches emanating

to additional nodes, which represents mutuallyexclusive decisions or events

When to use a Tree Diagram:

When an issue is known or being addressed in broad

generalities and you must move to specific details, such

as when developing logical steps to achieve an

    objective.

When developing actions to carry out

    When analyzing processes in detail

When probing the root cause of a problem

When evaluating implementation issues for several

    potential solutions

After an affinity diagram or relations diagram has

    uncovered key issues

As a communication tool, to explain in detail

    Prioritization Matrix

Prioritize items and describe in terms of

    weighted criteria

Combination or tree and matrix diagram

Pair-wise evaluation and narrow downoptions to most desired or effective

When to use a Prioritization Matrix Use it to prioritize complex or unclear issues,

where there are multiple criteria for decidingimportance.

Use it when there is data available to help score

    criteria and issues.

Use it to help select items to be actioned from a

    larger list of possible items.

When used with a group, it will help to gain

agreement on priorities and key issues. Use it, rather than simple Voting, when the extra

effort that is required to find a more confident

selection is considered to be worthwhile.

    Process Decision Program Chart

    (PDPC)

    Designed to help prepare contingency

    plan

    Emphasis- identifying the consequential

impact of failure on activity plans, andcreates an appropriate contingency plans

    to limit risks

    When to Use PDPC

    Before implementing a plan, especially

when the plan is large and complex.

When the plan must be completed on

    schedule.

When the price of failure is high.
