Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

Next Sunday, the Church celebrates the annual World Mission Sunday for the missions and missionaries around the world. Proceeds from this collec on, administered

by the Pon fical Mission Socie es, help support the merciful work of local churches in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, Latin America, and parts of Europe.

Donations can be dropped off in the collection box using the designated envelopes for Mission Sunday, or you may use the ONLINE GIVING system and select Mission Sunday under “Give a New Gi ” to give electronically.

October is a month in which we like to examine how we’ve u lized our gi s of me, talent, and treasure in serving God and others over the past year and decide how we might commit to growth in the coming year.

Last year, you may recall, we filled out commitment forms detailing how we might be be er Chris an stewards in the coming year. Needless to say, the year did not go as any of us planned and it very likely impacted the commitments we made.

It is important to note that circumstances in life can always change, at any time, for any reason. Loss of employment, loss of a loved one, illness, and unexpected bills are all examples of things that can get lobbed at us, throwing us off course. Not one of us is promised anything in this life, particularly stability. Life is constantly in flux because that’s the nature of it. That being said, we can s ll plan, while remaining flexible and trusting that God has everything under control.

So let’s take a closer look at our first gift in Christian stewardship, which is time. I’m sure many of us intended to increase our gift of time this year –

me with loved ones, me spent on parish ac vi-es, me with an extra daily Mass per week, or me spent in Adora on. However, those inten ons

most likely did not pan out the way we had hoped. We may be disappointed in how our me was greatly affected this year, but we must not despair because there is one very important way we can always spend our me, which can very rarely be thwarted if we remain inten onal and vigilant, and that is me in prayer. Here is what the Catechism has to say about our ability to pray through all things: It is always possible to pray: The me of the Chris an is that of the risen Christ who is with us always, no ma er what tempests may arise. Our

me is in the hands of God: “It is possible to offer fervent prayer even while walking in public or strolling alone, or seated in your shop … while buying or selling … or even while cooking.” – St. John Chrysostom (CCC #2743).

While it may seem obvious that, in tough mes, one should pray more rather than less, I can tell you from personal experience that the troubles of 2020 greatly affected my prayer life in a nega ve way. I had grown accustomed and comfortable in a prayer rou ne, which involved me waking up long before my children to pray for at least an hour or two before waking them and driving them to school and then going about the rest of my day. With all of the COVID-19 restrictions and other external circumstances in my life, sadly, my prayer life was one of the first things to suffer. Addi onally, losing my weekly hour in Adora on was a difficult blow to my spiritual life. It is not as if I didn’t pray, because I did every day, but the intentionality and zeal lessened. What’s more, I could feel the difference and it did not feel good at all. In recent months, I have had to re-commit to my me in focused and inten onal prayer. I have had to accept the changes in my life and learn to be crea ve and flexible in finding new ways to spend me with my Lord. I have had to learn how to invite Him into my life as it is right now, in this moment. I am happy to report that the renewed energy and focus in my prayer life has already brought about the most beau ful fruits! Satan tries to throw us off course every day by whispering the lie “You don’t have me,” into our ears. It is up to us to reject him and his lies and turn to God who is the giver of the gi of me.

You see, our Lord yearns for us to come to Him in prayer. He calls us each by name (Is 43:1) and invites us into relationship with Him. Where there is no communica on, there is no rela onship. However, God will not force us into a rela onship with Him, because if He did, it would not be a

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 11, 2020 5 relationship of authentic love. We have to make

me for Him because we love Him and we want Him to transform us and our lives. Are you responding to His invita on by seeking out more and more me to spend with Him, or are you giving credence to the lie that you do not have the me?

With regard to spending time in prayer as it relates to Christian stewardship, our time spent in prayer is what powers our ability to do everything else we do. Prior to His ascension, Jesus tells His apostles in His great commission, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na ons…” (Mt. 28:19). That is a command to which we are all called. If we are true disciples and our faith is alive, we cannot remain idle. We must go out as disciples and inspire others to discipleship as well. That is our mission. However, do you think the original disciples could have even begun to carry out this mission without prayer? Had they relied on their own human abilities without constantly turning to God in prayer, Christianity would have fizzled out before it even began.

We have evidence of this link between prayer and discipleship in the Acts of the Apostles. A er Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles were lost, afraid, and did not know how to proceed. It was presumably a very scary me for them. They all gathered, along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the upper room to pray together (Acts 1:13). It was

all they could do in a moment of uncertainty and they faithfully did so for nine days (the first novena!). The result of that commi ed, inten onal, focused time in prayer was the descent of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). Immediately following the descent of the Holy Spirit, Peter went out to preach and converted 3,000 people that very day (Acts 2:14-41)! The apostles were given a mission to make disciples and they did, but it was only possible through their faithful prayer, which allowed for God’s transforming grace to enter in and do the work. You, too, are invited to share in this mission of discipleship, but you cannot do it on your own. You need to begin or deepen your loving, communica ve rela onship with God to fulfill that mission.

As you reflect on how you might re-commit the use of your gi of me in the coming year, perhaps nervous about being unprepared for any changes that may arise, can you focus on how you might increase your time spent in prayer? Perhaps you have a great prayer life already. Is there room for even more? Can you change how inten onal you are in your prayer life and find a way to avoid distraction? Perhaps you could just create more consistency in your prayer life if you tend to be more sporadic? The result of deepening your prayer life can only be good and will help sustain you for your personal mission in discipleship.

How can we pray for you?

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and pe on, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.”

Philippians 4:6

Our prayer to God, through Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit, is the foun-da on of our rela onship with our Trinitarian God!

We believe it is important to not only specify our prayers, but also to intentionally pray for – to intercede on behalf of – others!

To enter your prayer request, please visit our website (www.corpuschristiphx.org/prayers). The requests are compiled into an email and sent out every Friday afternoon to our Prayer Warriors via Flocknote.

Frequently Asked Ques ons

How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area are invited to register in the Parish. Registration forms can be filled out via our parish website.

Adults 18+ need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children bap zed, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and ac ve in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribu on envelopes or the Online Giving program.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please leave a message for Carol Pavlak in the Parish Office. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child’s Bap sm. This poten ally may be fulfilled via an online course.

How do I request Anointing of the Sick? Please call the Parish Office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT un l someone is very near death to have the person anointed! Although Anoin ng of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be adminis-tered while the person is still alive. To limit exposure and spread of the Corona virus, Communion to the Sick is not available during this time. The Sacrament of Anointing is still available for those approaching the end of life.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. Call or e-mail John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, so he can go over the process. Do NOT set the date until approved by John as it cannot be guaranteed.

Worship Aid — Prayers & Responses for Mass Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 23)

I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Times of Trial

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Stewardship Prayer

My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. We will be friendly, if I am. We will be holy, if I am.

Our pews will be filled, if I help fill them. We will do great work, if I work. We will be prayerful, if I pray. We will make generous gi s to many causes, if I am a generous giver. We will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in.

Our parish will be a place of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who help make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want our parish to be.

Amen.
