Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

the Immaculate Concep on, Pope Pius X says: For is not Mary the Mother of Christ? Then she is our Mother also. And we must in truth hold that Christ, the Word made Flesh, is also the Savior of mankind. He had a physical body like that of any other man: and again as Savior of the human family, he had a spiritual and mystical body, the society, namely, of those who believe in Christ… Hence, Mary may be said to have also carried all those whose life was contained in the life of the Savior. Therefore, all we who are united to Christ, and…are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones (Ephes. v., 30), have issued from the womb of Mary like a body united to its head. Hence, though in a spiritual and mystical fashion, we are all children of Mary, and she is Mother of us all. (S. Aug. L. de S. Virginitate, c. 6).

Again, no ce how this teaching protects the reality of who Jesus is and the cohesive unity that exists between Him and His Church. (IL #10)

We also use Scripture to understand that Jesus gave His mother to all of us before His death. In John 19:25-27, Jesus tells John, “behold your mother” and for His mother to behold her son. It is not un-common for this passage to be interpreted very liter-ally as Jesus simply making sure His mother is cared for a er His death and assigning John with the task. However, it would be highly unlikely that Jesus, knowing far in advance what His fate would be, would not have made provisions for His mother long before He was actually hanging on the cross. It is far more likely that in the final moments before Jesus’ death, he was thinking about all of His people for which He was dying and how they needed a spiritual mother like Mary. Therefore, the Church interprets that passage to mean that John is represen ng the en re Church and Jesus is giving all of us His mother as a gi . Also note that Jesus’ words are not phrased as an invita on. He is not invi ng John, or us, to ac-cept His mother. “Behold your mother” is not ambig-uous, rather it is a statement of theological fact. Now we will dive deeper into three specific ways Mary is a spiritual mother to us. Co-Redemptrix

This tle, given to Mary by the Church, means that Mary cooperates with Jesus in His redemp ve work

and she is, therefore, a co-redeemer with Him. Be-fore we go further, let’s clarify the language. The La n prefix “co-“ literally means “with.” It does not mean “equal to.” Think of it this way: A plane is flown by a captain and a co-pilot. The co-pilot is al-ways subordinate to the captain but works with the captain to fly the plane. Jesus is the Redeemer and no one is equal to Him, but we all par cipate and cooperate in His work. Mary, as His mother, has a unique and special coopera on with Jesus, earning her the tle of “co-redemptrix.” We see in Genesis 3:15, that God tells Satan that a woman and her off-spring will destroy him. He could have le the wom-an out altogether, but He le them together as a co-opera ve unit. We also see Mary’s very literal coop-era on with the Holy Spirit in bringing forth Jesus in the flesh when she gives her fiat in Luke 1:38. Her body is the vehicle by which the Savior enters the world and that only happens because she agrees to cooperate with God’s will. Finally, we see Mary’s co-opera on in her own suffering, which is united to her son’s. It is any mother’s natural ins nct to want to protect her child from such horrific suffering as what Jesus went through, yet we don’t see Mary pleading with Pon us Pilate or a emp ng to fight off Roman soldiers. She knows that redemp ve work must take place and she silently cooperates to the point that she is standing at the foot of the cross at the very end. Her suffering is severe, but united with Jesus’ suffering it is co-redemp ve.

Looking to tradi on, we have many examples of how Mary has been understood as working with her Son to bring about salva on. The following are just two of them. St. Irenaeus of Lyons (b. c. 130AD) said, “Just as Eve having disobeyed, became the cause of death for herself and the en re human race, so Mary being obedient became the cause of salva on for herself and the en re human race.” An Eastern Akathist hymn dedicated to Mary from the around 525 AD refers to Mary as “redemp on of the tears of Eve.” Mediatrix of All Graces

To mediate something is to act as a “go-between” for two par es. Christ is the author and source of all grace and Mary mediated between Him and us by agreeing to bring Him forth into the world. It is

through her intercession that Christ was brought to us in the first place. We would not have that source of grace had she not agreed, so it is therefore part of her co-redemp ve work to mediate grace to us. We see an example of this at the wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11). Mary places herself between the couple and her Son to point out their needs and bring about a miracle. Using the couple as a representa on of mankind, Pope John Paul II explains in his encyclical Redemptoris Mater:

Thus there is a mediation: Mary places herself between her Son and mankind in the reality of their wants, needs and sufferings. She puts herself “in the middle,” that is to say she acts as a mediatrix and not as an outsider, but in her position as mother. She knows that as such she can point out to her Son the needs of mankind, and in fact, she has the right to do so. Her mediation is thus in the nature of intercession: Mary “intercedes” for mankind. (RM #21)

We have an abundance of resources from the early Church that show this is not a new understanding of Mary’s role in our lives. St. Irenaeus refers to Mary as the “cause of salva on for herself and the en re human race.” She is the cause of our salvation insofar as she brings us Jesus. From the 4th Century, St. Ephrem says, "after the mediator, you (Mary) are the Mediatrix of the whole world." And from the 8th Century, St. Andrew of Crete refers to her as “Mediatrix of the law and grace.” St. Louis de Monfort (1673-1716) uses the image of an aqueduct through which grace flows from the head to the rest of the body. Another way to think about it is that Mary is the neck of the body, which connects the head to the rest of the members. All the grace that flows from the head passes through her on the way to the rest of the body. Advocate

Mary’s third role in her spiritual motherhood is that of Advocate. To advocate for someone is to speak on their behalf. This is an ancient role which finds its precedent in the Old Testament. The kings of the me would o en have many wives, so the Queen Mother would be the one to sit at the king’s right, a place of honor. The Queen Mother had three roles: advisor to the king, choosing dynastic succession should the king die, and advocate for the people. 1 Kings 2:19-20 says, “So Bathsheba went to King Solomon

to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her and bowed down to her. Then he sat on his throne and had a seat brought for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right. Then she said, ‘I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me.’ And the king said to her, “Make your request, my mother, for I will not refuse you.’” In this par cular case, the request was refused because unbeknownst to his mother, it would have undermined King Solomon, however, the nature of their relationship is s ll quite evident in the passage. The king honors his mother and does not wish to deny her anything she asks on behalf of the people. Again, we go back to the wedding at Cana where Mary advocates for the wedding couple and brings their needs to her Son, which He does not deny her. Jesus is God and is not dependent on anyone to tell Him what someone needs. It was not necessary that Mary intercede for the couple at Cana, but it was Jesus’ will for her role as advocate to be established at that moment at Cana. Whenever we need something, it is good practice to bring those needs to Mary and allow her to intercede for us and act as our advocate before her Son.

Like all of the other teachings about Mary, there are many examples from Tradi on that support her role as Advocate, but I’m simply going to refer to one profound example here. The most ancient prayer to Mary is called the “Sub Tuum Praesidium.” Found on a piece of Egyp an papyrus from the third century, it reads, “We fly to thy protec on, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our pe ons in our necessi es, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.” Clearly, there was an understanding amongst early Chris ans that it was efficacious to ask the Queen Mother to intercede and advocate on their behalf.

Whether you have always had a sense of Mary being your spiritual mother, or if this is a more foreign concept to you, I hope you are inspired to deepen that rela onship. A er reviewing all of the ways she can be a mother to you, how can you lean into her motherhood and her love for you a li le more? Jesus gave you a gift out of divine love in giving you his mother. How might being more receptive to that gi bring you closer to Him and His will for your life?

Page 6: 3550 E. Knox Rd • Phoenix, AZ 85044 · 2 days ago  · Daily Mass: Monday—Saturday: 8:15 am Tuesday: 6:00 pm Friday: 6:30 Confessions Confessions are held in the church in the

Since all four of our weekend Masses are now nearing capacity, we are happy to announce that we will be bringing back the Sunday 5pm Mass star ng next Sunday, October 11th! Addi onally, that same weekend of October 10th & 11th, we will be slightly increasing the sea ng capacity at each Mass by relabeling the pews. In most of the church, every other pew will be available to sit in and we ask that if you share a pew with others, that you leave some space between families. For those who want to come, but want more space, a few sections will have available seating in every 3rd pew, instead of every other one. We will con nue to have about 20 black folding chairs set up around the perimeter of the church as well. By adding a Mass and a li le extra sea ng at all of them, we believe it will no longer be necessary to sign-up to a end Masses in advance!!! Trained volunteers will s ll be on hand to help with sea ng and safety at Mass. We will do our best to safely seat everyone who comes to celebrate Mass with us. If we run out of safe spaces in the pews, we will offer you a seat in the black folding chairs, find you an appropriate place to stand, or alert a Eucharis c minister if you want to par cipate by listening to the Mass while in the courtyard. You may also choose to come back for another Mass or par cipate in the live-stream at 8:30 am on Sunday mornings. We have not yet needed to turn anyone away from Mass due to capacity issues, but if that is a concern for you, we encourage you to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to Mass me. Our time living with the Coronavirus around is not over, but we have learned a lot that makes it more manageable and less dangerous. There are just a few simple but important rules to follow to con nue to help increase the safety in a ending Mass:

1. While you are inside buildings, wear a cloth mask that covers your nose and mouth. Masks should also be worn when you’re outside if you cannot have space between you and others.

2. Wash and sani ze your hands immediately before and a er Mass. Try not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth.

3. Keep a li le distance between yourself and others. 4. Stay home when you are not feeling well. (The dispensa on for a ending Sunday Mass is ongoing at this

me. If you are vulnerable or ill, please stay home and pray with us online.) Thank you for all you have done to make our parish’s reopening so successful! Your pa ence, kindness, though ulness, and selfless sacrifices have helped many parishioners come back to the Mass and the sacraments. It is a great pleasures to welcome you home to Corpus Chris , and we look forward to con nuing to do so in the coming weeks and months.

In addi on to these changes at our Masses, there are a few other changes we would like to highlight: Star ng on October 13, we will be fully reopening the Parish Office to serve you during our normal opera ng hours. Please drop in if you need our help. We are taking reserva ons for private shopping me in our gi shop. Please contact our gi shop manager, Barb Manning, if you are interested. As of Saturday, October 3rd, we are no longer livestreaming daily Masses, due to other staff commitments as things reopen. When you are comfortable, we encourage you to come back in person, especially to daily Masses, where there is plenty of space to keep distant. We par cularly recommend the Tuesday evening (6 pm) and Friday morning (6:30 am) Masses for those who are concerned with large crowds, as they have even fewer attendees. If you are not ready or able to a end in person, we will con nue to livestream the Sunday 8:30 am Mass (with distribu on of communion a erward) for the foreseeable future, as well as some occasional special liturgies. Also, the Phoenix Diocese livestreams daily Masses on Facebook and Youtube at 8am. This can be a great way to remind us of the universality of the Church and connect you with not only our parish of Corpus Chris , but also with the Diocese of Phoenix!

Worship Aid — Prayers & Responses for Mass Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 80)

The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. (Is 5:7a) Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Times of Trial

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Stewardship Prayer

My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. We will be friendly, if I am. We will be holy, if I am.

Our pews will be filled, if I help fill them. We will do great work, if I work. We will be prayerful, if I pray. We will make generous gi s to many causes, if I am a generous giver. We will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in.

Our parish will be a place of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who help make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want our parish to be.

Amen.
