Using automated Information Systems in healthcare

Computer technology has now been infused into almost every aspect of healthcare delivery.

Automation in healthcare began in the late 1960s and early 1970s with systems that designed to meet specific needs within healthcare.

Automated information system used in healthcare are grouped into five types:

1. Healthcare information systems.

2. Clinical information systems.

3. Administrative information systems.

4. Personnel systems.

5. Consumer information systems.

Automated application used in healthcare delivery

1. Healthcare information system: Health information systems (HISs) refer to any

system that captures, stores, manages or transmits information related to the health of individuals or the activities of organizations that work within the health sector.

Health information systems continue to form the backbone of that network within healthcare institutions.

There are four primary functions for HISs:

1. HISs used to integrate or interface with the various applications throughout the organization.

2. HISs manage the Admission Discharge Transfer process (ADT), they track the location of all patient awhile maintaining their demographic data.

3. HISs interface with financial systems that are used to track the charges and billing process for the institutions.

4. HISs produce a number administrative reports that support the daily operations of the institutions.

2. Clinical information system: Are used to process patient data and support patient

care. Clinical information system include:

1. Clinical department systems are accept patient orders, report results, schedule patients, equipment and rooms, print labels, work lists.

3. Documentation systems collect assessment and patient status data from a verity of healthcare providers.

3. Administrative information system: Automate the management of data used in the daily

operations of the institution. It include:

1. Classification systems are use patient data to classify patients based on the amount and type of care required.

2. Quality assurance systems are attempt to measure and report on cost effective quality care.

3. Material management systems are used to manage the supplies and other inventory of an institution.

4. Financial systems include a combination of information system that are used to manage and report the financial aspects of the institution.

4. Personnel systems:

Include a combination of systems that are used to track the characteristics of employee and/or the use of these employees within the institutions.

Ex: Home address, salary, job title, ….. .

5. Consumer information system:

Are applications that have been developed for the general public, patients, or clients.

Ex: Support emotional services, assist the general public in maintaining data, … .

Types of automated data used in HISs

Data are classified into five major types:

1. Clinical or client data: These data include all data that are related to an individual client.

Ex: Patient’s blood pressure, list of patient's problems, …

2. Financial data: These data include all of the fiscal data related to the operation of the healthcare institution.

Ex: Patient’s bill, ..

• 3. Human resource data: These data include all data related to employees who have a contractual relationship with the institution such as physicians, nurses, students or volunteers.

4. Material resource data: These data refer to all of tangible resources used in the operation of the

healthcare institution.

Ex: from supplies that purchased externally or internally.

5. Intellectual data: These data comprise the factual data that are stored in the various specific databases.

Ex: Include database with in information about published articles, …
