GRADING SCALE Grades in this course are presented in the table below. What determines your course grade is Weighted Total Points (WTP) as presented on page 1. Rounding is not allowed. In order to earn the letter grade you must hit the whole number carried out to 2 decimal places. This method means that an 89.99 is not as good as a 90.00 if you want an A. It is imprecise to decide that an 89.50 is better than an 89.49 for a letter grade when the first number misses the target. So, brace yourself to work in a system where you have to earn your grade the old fashioned way ¾ hit the whole number.

GRADE POLICY Grading in this course is a straight scale unless that proves too difficult for someone to make a 95% or better. In effect, if the high score on EXAMS 1-4 respectively is less than 95, I will curve it to at least 95 and apply the same % to all students. The OPTIONAL COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM (OCFE) is not curved for it replaces your lowest raw score of up to 2 exams. You will receive the curve for the replaced exam if your raw score is higher than that exam. What is most important is that the more points you score, the more curve points you get. It is unfair that students, who score lower, get more points than someone who scores higher on the exam. Thus, the most reasonable and fair method is a constant % curve. The table below has scores and the resulting curves for two examples with a high score of 90 and 85 respectively. If the high score is lower than 95, a divisor is calculated and applied to all students the same.

EXAM RAW SCORE DIVISOR % CURVED SCORE EX 1 EX 2 EX 1 EX 2 EX 1 EX 2 EX 1 EX 2 90.00 85.00 94.74 89.47 5.56 11.77 95.00 95.00 80.00 75.00 94.74 89.47 5.56 11.77 84.44 83.83 70.00 65.00 94.74 89.47 5.56 11.77 73.89 72.65 60.00 55.00 94.74 89.47 5.56 11.77 63.33 61.47

Think of it another way. Say, for example, that you have a job that pays $100,000 a year. The person in the office next to you is paid $50,000 a year. The company decides to give a 5% raise to all employees. In this case you would receive a $5,000 raise. The person next to you would receive a $2,500 raise. It is the same principle for how my curve works. If your company decided to give the same dollar raise to all, say $4,000, you would receive a 4% raise and the other person would receive an 8% raise. I doubt if you would appreciate that method very much and that is why I do not use it. My curve method is fair for all students, because they receive the same % curve raise that is quantitatively calculated to be objective. I look at high score (95 minimum), average score (70 minimum), and GPA (2.0 minimum) for the EXAM when deciding a curve and will adjust the divisor as necessary to preserve fairness and realistic grades.

EXAMS EXAMS 1-4 cover all the reading and lesson material to that point and are delivered online, timed, and open-book as scheduled. The OCFE covers all material. If you take the OCFE and outscore up to your lowest two exam scores, the final raw score will replace those raw scores, provided you meet the course requirements. The OCFE is the only makeup exam given for any reason. Once an exam begins, the class is closed including all online discussions. In effect, be on time or miss the exam. Read the exam policy below to ensure you understand the alternatives and standards.

EXAM POLICY

ALTERNATIVE STANDARD

TAKE ALL 4 EXAMS

If you take all 4 of EXAMS 1-4, you can replace up to your two lowest grades with the OCFE if the final score is higher. If it is not higher, it will not count against you if you take it. The OCFE can only help you, not hurt you in this alternative. The OCFE is OPTIONAL. You do not have to take it. This is the only alternative in which you do not have to take the comprehensive final to complete your exam grade. It is your best opportunity to do well in the course.

TAKE 3 EXAMS MISS 1 EXAM

If you miss any 1 of EXAMS 1-4, you must take the OCFE, which is the makeup for the exams you missed. If you fail to take the OCFE, the exam you missed counts in your overall score as a 0 and is averaged in with your other exam scores. This standard means that your OCFE score will replace the exam you missed and any 1 of the exams you took if the OCFE score is higher. It will not, however, be used to replace an exam you took if the OCFE score is lower. Your highest score of exams taken is used along with any missed exams.

TAKE 2 EXAMS MISS 2 EXAMS

If you miss any 2 of EXAMS 1-4, take the OCFE to replace both exams to remove the 0 scores. The exam scores you earned for the two exams you took cannot be replaced. It is easy to see that taking all 4 exams and the final gives you the best opportunity for the highest grade.

MISS 3 EXAMS You cannot pass the course under any circumstances and will be blocked from taking the OCFE.

EXAM SCHEDULE EXAMS 1-4 and the OCFE must be taken as scheduled in the syllabus. No other times are allowed so make plans accordingly.

MyManagementLab QUIZZES ONLINE There are 18 25-question chapter quizzes you that are graded online at MyManagementLab. What you earn for a total score averaged and weighted by 8% is your grade on this task. In effect, there are 450 points available to make 100% that is weighted to 8% of your grade. A perfect score of 450 earns the full 8%. If your score is less, it is weighted appropriately. For example, if you earn 300 points it is weighted as follows: 300/450 x 100 x .08 = 5.33%. Quizzes are accessed at BBL as a Course Tool in the left menu. All MyManagementLab assignments are online and due no later than as scheduled on page 2 of this syllabus. The quizzes help you get through the book, so take advantage of this opportunity to learn the material. Not only are higher quiz scores statistically related to higher exam scores, the mere taking of quizzes is related to

higher exam scores regardless of the quiz score. Use them to your learning advantage. Quizzes for each exam block must be submitted by the deadline noted on page 2 of the syllabus or a score of 0 is posted and final. You can work ahead if you wish and submit quizzes early. Beware ¾ you have only 1 attempt at each quiz. Once submitted your score is final. OPTIONAL SYLLABUS QUIZ An optional BBL exam over the syllabus is administered the 2nd week of class. It serves as your practice exam and is conducted the same as your 4 exams. If you pass it the 1st time with an 80% or better score, a 1% bonus is added to your Weighted Total Points (WTP) score. If you miss the deadline or score less than 80%, no bonus is awarded. It is to your advantage to earn this 1%, because it can make the difference in your letter grade in the course as well as help you learn the exam process. OPTIONAL CRITICAL THINKING BONUS ESSAY During the term, you will be given an optional essay assignment. It will concern a topic of my choice. Points are earned based on the quality of your answers and your attention to detail by following the instructions exactly. Rewrites are not permitted. You must get it right the first time. It must be written and submitted exactly as assigned in the essay instructions. The essay is optional and offers up to 2% to your final grade score based upon how you score. It must be submitted when scheduled as noted in the syllabus. You can choose to do this essay with one or more of your virtual team members for a team grade, or by yourself, but not both. It is a good opportunity and can make the difference in a course letter grade, not to mention the answer to any student’s dream at the end of the course when campaigning the professor for points. VIRTUAL CONTACT TEAMS Students are randomly assigned to virtual contact teams early in the semester. These teams give students the opportunity to interact during the course to help prepare for exams, homework, and talk through course topics online. A smaller virtual team helps most students deal with issues during the course, in addition to my help, and can be a valuable asset since we never meet face-to-face this term. It is to your advantage to interact with a smaller group of students. If you do, learning can be enhanced, scores and grades can be higher. So, use it as a contact group where you can ask questions of a smaller group of students to help understand organizational behavior topics.

DROPPING THE COURSE If you decide it is necessary to drop the course, adhere to the related guidelines presented in the Schedule of Classes — University of North Texas. If you stop participating in class activities you will not be automatically dropped, but will receive a failing grade for the course. My policy is you can drop with a W during the W/WF period as long as you are actively participating in the course and drop using the appropriate procedure in the Department of Management. If not participating, a WF will be given during that period if you decide to withdraw. Of course, a W is given during the W period and the department staff can sign for me. Make sure you check UNT deadlines (p8/5/1711) and drop by contacting the Department of Management staff at 565-3140.

If you (or someone you know) has experienced or experiences any of these acts of aggression, please know that you are not alone. The federal Title IX law makes it clear that violence and harassment based on sex and gender are Civil Rights offenses. UNT has staff members trained to support you in navigating campus life, accessing health and counseling services, providing academic and housing accommodations, helping with legal protective orders, and more. BLACKBOARD ONLINE LEARNING

100% of this course is online using the BLACKBOARD LEARN (BBL). Successful online learners take command of their own learning; they do not rely on being taught. Online learners bring their goals, experiences, and desire to learn when working online. Online learning in this course is asynchronous; neither students nor instructor need be at one place at one time to participate. In other words, online learning is truly continuous — it is not confined to a class period. One can learn and engage the course content at any time, meaning that scheduling is flexible, but there are certain deadlines that all learners must meet. Consequently, the successful online learner is self-directed, self-controlled, and knows how to manage time effectively. Access this course at https://learn.unt.edu/ and complete ASAP any tutorials available so you are skilled at using it, since your grade depends upon it.

HELPFUL TIPS

CATCH UP, JOIN UP, KEEP UP You are advised to check in every 24 hours to see the latest postings. It is important to catch up, join up, and keep up. Be careful and diligent to avoid getting behind for you are accountable for being up to date in this course.

MEET ALL DEADLINES Meet all deadlines is one of the most important tips I can give you. This is not a correspondence course. There are hard deadlines you must meet and online activities you must attend. Thus, schedule your time wisely regarding conflicting events like work and family, but always remember family comes first. 24-HOUR CLOCK Most of the world uses a 24-hour clock and we have a diverse student body from various corners of the world. Consequently, to avoid any confusion I use a 24-hour clock in this course. That means 1200 is midday (noon) and 2400 is midnight. So check times carefully using the 24-hour clock for deadlines in this course. It is easy to convert AM/PM time to 24-hour time. Simply add the PM hour to 12 and you have the 24-hour clock time (e.g., 3 PM is the same as 1500, 12 + 3 = 15). FOLLOW COMMON SENSE RULES OF STUDENT CONDUCT Fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism have serious consequences, so do your own work. Many questions can be answered by being familiar with the Catalog. Make sure you have a copy and use it. A zero tolerance policy is followed regarding violations of academic integrity, found at http://www.vpaa.unt.edu/academic-integrity.htm ATTENDANCE Attendance is measured by your INET activity. Daily activity is the best way to attend and not miss any information passed. If you miss an announcement or posting of some other important information because you did not attend online, you only have yourself to blame. I will audit each student’s activity every few days to see if you are attending. I can see when you login, how long you stay, where you go in the course, and when you logout. You may be dropped for nonattendance if appropriate or given a failing grade. DO THE ONLINE LEARNING AT MyManagementLab To repeat — Not only are higher quiz scores statistically related to higher exam scores, the mere taking of quizzes is related to higher exam scores regardless of the quiz score. You must complete the required chapter tests on time to earn the points. Moreover, there are effective learning tools to help you learn the material at MyManagementLab that you can take advantage of to make the highest scores possible. BEWARE OF OPEN-BOOK EXAMS While you may think open-book exams are a good thing online, they are a detriment to performance if students are not prepared for a closed-book exam. These exams are online, timed, and questions can only be viewed one at a time making them difficult and

Page 13: 3720 INET 2017 syl Oct31 - facultyinfo.unt.edu 3720.002... · MGMT 3720 FALL 2017 Dr. Taylor ... science methods for managers. In effect, this course is the ABCs of ... 10 NOV 1-3

equivalent to a closed-book exam. If you try to look everything up, you will run out of time. Exam questions test your understanding similar to word problems in math, meaning not everything can be looked up. In effect, prepare for a closed-book exam and follow the exam tips in this syllabus. Knowledge is not what you can look up; it’s what you know without looking anything up. In effect, open-book is your backup, not your primary method of taking exams. And, the exams are tough so beware that being prepared for a closed-book exam will likely produce a higher score. BE PATIENT Often students become frustrated when taking an online exam. If you complete all the BBL browser checks and everything works, you should be fine unless your computer freezes or the system crashes. Sometimes a window in the exam may freeze. If so, click on another window or resize it and that will usually fix the problem. If not, restart your computer right away and continue where you left off. Stay calm and it will work better for you to demonstrate your knowledge on the exam. Most important to remember is that once you start an exam, your clock continues to run whether you are online or not. So, do not delay in getting back online after a restart. BE HONEST Integrity/ethics tests are used in organizations to combat ethical problems. In support of this movement, for each exam you must certify your integrity to get credit. Instructions for how to do so are provided. This check is as important as the exam. One of the issues all students face is the possibility of cheating by their classmates. I take extraordinary steps to make sure that cheating is nearly impossible, can be discovered, and a low probability. One of these steps is the integrity check. Make sure you complete it to get credit. The best INTEGRITY CHECK is to behave appropriately and consistent with the UNT academic integrity standards. In addition, I use several techniques to ensure integrity is high on INET exams, including questions delivered randomly, one at a time, and timed. Remember, I can observe your activity in BBL at my discretion. So, if you are honest and do not violate the Code of Conduct, all will go well and I will not have any reason to question your integrity. What you do when no one is looking is the real test of character. Stay on the high road. BE ORGANIZED You have a limited time to complete the exam and must complete it by the time access ends. Because you cannot exceed the time limits, it is important to be organized and start the exam with plenty of time to finish. Be able to use the book, study notes, and INET files quickly so you do not fall into the trap of wasting time looking everything up. BE PREPARED There is no substitute for preparation and it is the key to your success. Given you have all the material needed to do well on the exam, if you prepare for a closed-book exam, you’ll have a better chance to score well since there is not enough time to look everything up. This subject matter can be difficult and involves terms and concepts that take some time to learn. Know the language and understand the concepts. Most of my questions test your understanding and I write them all myself without using any

testbanks. By now you should know what methods work best for you to achieve the highest level of learning. Apply them well for INET exams will test your knowledge and understanding similar to word problems in math. Evidence reveals my preparation method works. Therefore, I recommend you follow these preparation steps listed in the following table. Past experience and student feedback reveals that you if you follow my steps exactly as written, you give yourself the best chance to do well in this course. Read them carefully. ACTION PREPARATION METHOD EXPLANATION READ THE CHAPTERS

Read the text chapters first without doing anything but read and think about the story being told. Do not highlight or take notes. Knowledge comes from sustained thought about the body of work.

HIGHLIGHT THE CHAPTERS

Read the chapters again a second time and highlight or take notes about what's important instead of highlighting while you read the first time. Seeing exam material repeatedly will help you learn it. Highlighting or taking notes while reading the textbook the first time will produce faulty highlights much of the time.

CREATE A STUDY GUIDE

Transfer your highlights to a study guide that represents your knowledge. The Study Guide you create will be very important when it comes time to take exams for you do not have time to look everything up.

READ THE LESSONS

Read DrT’s lessons and learn the material. If you know DrT’s lesson material well without looking anything up, that is sufficient to do well on the exams if you are prepared. Remember DrT's 1st Law of Learning: "It's not about what you can look up — it's what you know without looking anything up."

DO THE ONLINE LEARNING

At MyManagementLab, learning tools and quizzes are provided. Use them. Bear in mind I did not write those quiz questions and my question types are more varied. Regardless, these quizzes will help get you through the book.

TAKE THE SYLLABUS QUIZ

You can take the Syllabus Exam as many times as you like, but beware it is the first time you take it that is graded for bonus credit. It is important that you know how the test will be administered and the level of understanding required in order to score high on these exams.

LEARN YOUR STUDY GUIDE

Know your study guide and be able to answer lesson questions without having to look anything up. Some memorization of terms and concepts is necessary to understand the questions asked. In effect, follow my advice and prepare for a closed-book test. Statistical research evidence from past classes reveals students who prepare for closed-book exams learn more, learn faster, and score higher than students who do not.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

This step may be the most important to your success if you prepare well and know the material. Your brain will misfire due to sleep deprivation. So, get a good night’s sleep before an exam.

BE CAREFUL Be careful when reading questions, reading answers, selecting answers, saving questions, and submitting an exam. INET exams are different than paper & pencil exams in class. Use the practice exam to become comfortable with the techniques needed to comply with the instructions. Watch your elapsed time clock to make sure to use the time wisely. Read the questions and the answers carefully. Do not wait until

the last minute to access the exam because your clock may differ from BBL. The types of exam questions as explained in the following table. In particular, do not submit your exam until you are done. Do not be sloppy with your mouse or pad, because if you submit your exam by mistake before you are done, it is submitted. Be careful.

Q TYPE EXPLANATION JUMBLED SENTENCE

One or more blanks will be presented along with choices for each blank. You must select all correct answers to receive any credit.

MATCHING A list is provided with matching choices from which to choose. Partial credit is given for any right answer. Negative scoring is allowed (see multiple answer).

MULTIPLE CHOICE Single answer

Circles are used to select an answer. Only 1 answer can be selected. Only 1 selection is possible even if it refers to multiple selections in the answer list such as “all answers correct” or “no answers correct.”

MULTIPLE CHOICE Multiple answer

Squares are used to select multiple answers. There is always more than one answer correct in this type of question. Negative scoring is allowed for multiple answer questions, meaning that if you select the right answers and also some wrong ones, you will not receive full credit and may receive no credit if your selections are more wrong than right. For example, if 2 of the 5 selections are right and 3 are wrong and you select 1 right answer and 2 wrong answers, your score will be 0. This procedure prevents someone from selecting all the answers regardless of right or wrong and not receiving a penalty for doing so. Moreover, the negative scoring method allows for partial credit that results in higher scores overall as was experimentally tested and proven on past exams. Most of the time you will be warned if the question requires multiple answers. Pay attention to squares and whether you are warned or not, you will know what to do.

TRUE FALSE Circles are used to select an answer. Only 1 answer can be selected.

DELIVERY Exams are timed. Questions are delivered 1 at a time and can be answered in any order. You can go back and check your answers. This method ensures an open-book INET exam is equivalent to a closed-book exam and was experimentally verified by DrT.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE YOUR GRADE There are several opportunities to earn bonus credit including the syllabus quiz, bonus essay, and SPOT evaluation. And, don’t forget the OCFE. Take advantage of them. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE This course is demanding of your time, especially if you procrastinate. Falling behind simply compounds your problems. Assignments thrown together in a hurry are usually poor in quality and cramming for tests rarely helps. KNOW THE RULES In order to succeed in this course, you must know what to do. Make sure you understand the evaluated areas of the course.

LEARN HOW TO KEEP SCORE Be sure you understand how grades are computed. It is a simple system, but confusion often emerges. If you aren’t sure, ask. HAVE A PERSONAL STAKE IN THE OUTCOME Your grade is mostly under your control. Take pride in your own work and accept no compromise on quality. SEEK FEEDBACK I am available to help you. Regularly check BBL every day to view updated information for this course. You can make an office or phone appointment by BBL email to my assistant [email protected] to ensure a time is reserved for you. Also, I can help you with items like resumes and cover letters. HELP EACH OTHER Virtual teams work smarter and succeed if contact is regular and useful. Helping one another is an important aspect of this course if used wisely if you wish to participate. In effect, once virtual teams are formed early in the term, do what it takes to effectively interact online in a virtual world if you wish to get something out of it. MEET THE STANDARDS OF THE COURSE If you continue in the course, you accept the criteria (i.e., standards) of the course outlined in this syllabus. In addition, these standards are subject to change without notice since a syllabus is not a contract and sometimes changes are necessary to help students. In effect, I reserve the right to get smarter and make changes at any time if the situation warrants. Thus, you are accountable for meeting the standards of the course including any changes and are urged to read and refer to this syllabus carefully. The time to decide if you are going to stay in the course and commit to learning is now, not later. It should be clear to you that the better you do, the more you receive, particularly when considering grades. So, carefully assess what is required in this course and decide. The focus is on getting it done if you continue. LEARN BLACKBOARD ASAP It is to your benefit to become skilled at using BBL as soon as possible in order to become familiar with the process well before EXAM1. Almost all BBL problems are overcome in advance through knowledge of the system. Learn it ASAP and you’ll be glad you did when EXAM time comes. Lack of knowledge about how to use BBL is not an excuse for doing poorly on the exams or in the course. So, be wise and learn BBL. BE COURTEOUS ONLINE When you post messages or send email, keep your messages brief, courteous, and to the point. Short paragraphs work best. Reread what you have written before posting it. Nonverbal cues are the dominant source of meaning in interpersonal communication. Such cues are missing online. It is too easy for others to misinterpret your meaning when all they have is text to read. So, be courteous, clear, and professional.

OFF CAMPUS COMPUTER PROBLEMS Problems can emerge if you take the exams using computers off campus. Examples include problems with network firewalls, access, server, computer failures, and other problems when taking an INET exam. UNT has a set of procedures to check your computer and ensure you are ready to go. Make sure you take every precaution to verify your off campus computer system operates effectively. Dial-up will not work in this INET course. If you do not have broadband access at home, find a place with access or come to campus. One way to make certain you encounter few, if any, problems is to take all exams on a UNT computer connected to the network if you live within a convenient range of campus. If not, take care to minimize the potential for problems. On the upside, I work off campus all the time on a MAC and/or Windows and rarely have any problems unless it is a UNT issue. In that case, all of us are affected. If your computer fails during an exam and you cannot get back into the system, the OCFE is your makeup if unable to complete the exam during your access time. You will not be allowed back into the exam after your time has expired. What is most important is that any off campus problems you encounter are yours to resolve. Do so prior to any assignment coming due and before each exam by using the syllabus quiz to check your system. WARNING TO ALL NOCTURNAL CREATURES Students who are nocturnal (similar to Owls) in that they like to take exams in the middle of the night, or after hours so to speak, beware of the helpdesk hours. It is not open then. So, if you have any trouble you are on your own. ACT PROFESSIONAL, AND YOU WILL BE TREATED AS ONE Be sure and review the How to talk to a Professor lesson online at BBL. It is useful to avoid common mistakes in the professor-student relationship. Do not ask me for a deal. Every semester a student will ask me for a deal that is not available to all students. It is unethical to ask me to give you points that have not been earned and speaks poorly of your integrity and mine if I were to grant your request. It always results in an embarrassing situation for the student where respect dissolves quickly. A common mistake is to ask to extend deadlines for assignments and/or exams, because you missed the deadline. Under no circumstances will I grant such a request for it is unfair to other students. Just remember that you have the optional final to make up an exam, regardless of why you missed it. Missed assignments are assigned a 0. And the most ridiculous and unethical mistake is to ask for a higher grade at the end of the course when you did not earn it. Recently a student asked, “DrT, can you bump me up since I’m close?” When I inquired why the student asked knowing my position already in the syllabus, the answer I got is “I had nothing to lose by asking,” ¾ my reply was (and will always be) “except my respect.” There are bonus extra credit points available in the course. Take advantage of them, because at the end of the course is too late. In effect, act professional and you will be treated as one.
