The following are the regu-lations concerning the Len-
ten season: 1. The days of both Fast
and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
The other Fridays of Lent are days of Ab-stinence.
On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted.
(Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to Fast.)
On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten.
(Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.)
2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole,
is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each
individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of

St. Agatha, also known as Agatha of Sicily, is one of the most highly venerated virgin martyrs of the Catholic Church. It is believed that she was born around 231 in either Catania or Palermo, Sicily to a rich and noble family. From her very early years, the notably
beautiful Agatha dedicated her life to God. She became a consecrated virgin, a state in life where young women choose to remain celibate and give themselves wholly to Jesus and the Church in a life of prayer and service. That did not stop men from desiring her and making unwanted advances toward her. However, one of the men who desired Agatha, whose name was Quintianus, because he was of a high diplomatic ranking, thought he could force her to turn away from her vow and force her to marry. His persistent proposals were consistently spurned by Agatha, so Quintianus, knowing she was a Christian during the persecution of Decius, had her arrested and brought before the judge. He was the Judge. He expected her to give in to his demands when she was faced with torture and possible death, but she simply reaffirmed her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am. I am your sheep: make me worthy to overcome the devil." With tears falling from her eyes, she prayed for courage. To force her to change her mind, Quintianus had her imprisoned - in a brothel. Agatha never lost her confidence in God, even though she suffered a month of assaults and efforts to get her to abandon her vow to God and go against her virtue. Quintianus heard of her calm strength and ordered that she be brought before him once again. During her interrogation, she told him that to be a servant of Jesus Christ was her true freedom. Enraged, Quintianus sent her off to prison instead of back to the brothel -- a move intended to make her even more afraid, but it was probably a great relief to her. Agatha continued to proclaim Jesus as her Savior, Lord, Life and Hope. Quintianus ordered her to be tortured. He had her stretched on a rack to be torn with iron hooks, burned with torches, and whipped. Noticing Agatha was enduring all the torture with a sense of cheer, he commanded she be subjected to a worse form of torture ? this evil man ordered that her breasts be cut off. He then sent her back to prison with an order of no food or medical attention. But the Lord gave her all the care she needed. He was her Sacred Physician and protector. Agatha had a vision of the apostle, St. Peter, who comforted her and healed her wounds through his prayers. After four days, Quintianus ignored the miraculous cure of her wounds. He had her stripped naked and rolled over naked over hot coals which were mixed with sharp shards. When she was returned to prison, Agatha prayed, "Lord, my Creator, you have ever protected me from the cradle; you have taken me from the love of the world, and given me patience to suffer: receive now my soul." Agatha is believed to have passed into Heaven around the year 251.

Digiuno e Astinenza Il Mercoledì delle Ceneri e il Venerdì Santo sono giorni obbligatori di digiuno ed astinenza per i cattolici. Inoltre, i venerdì durante la Quaresima sono giorni obbliga-tori di astinenza. Per i membri della Chiesa cattolica latina, le norme sul digiuno sono obbligatori da 18 anni fino all'età di 59 an-ni. Con il digiuno, una persona è permessa di mangiare un pasto completo, come an-che due pasti più piccoli che insieme siano uguali a un pasto completo. Le norme in materia di astinenza dalla carne sono vin-colanti per i membri della Chiesa Cattolica Latina da 14 anni in poi.
In un secolo tutto incredulità, in una nazione pervasa di ateismo, quale era la Francia nel secolo xix. Maria si proclama Immacolata, e inizia una serie di miracoli che sono la più eloquente apologia del soprannaturale. Il dogma dell'Immacolata Concezione di Maria SS. era stato proclamato da appena quattro anni, ma le discussioni in pro ed in
contro continuavano tuttavia: Maria pone loro termine, confermando il dogma pontificio. La Vergine apparve ad un'umile pastorella, la giovane Bernardetta Soubirous, avverandosi anche in questo caso quanto Gesù diceva, pregando il Padre suo: « Ti ringrazio, o Padre, che hai nascoste queste cose ai prudenti e ai sapienti e le hai rivelate ai pargoli, cioè agli umili ». Era l'alba dell'11 febbraio 1858 e Bernardetta si era recata in prossimità della grotta di Massabielle. sulle sponde del torrente Gave. Su una rupe di questa grotta la Madonna le apparve biancovestita, col capo coperto di un velo scendente sulle spalle, i fianchi cinti d'una fascia azzurra, i piedi nudi, baciati da rose olezzanti, un volto celestiale. «Era la più bella fra tutte le donne». Nella prima apparizione la Madonna insegnò alla pia fanciulla a far bene il segno di croce e a recitare il Rosario ed Ella stessa per prima prese la corona che aveva penzoloni al braccio e cominciò. Il secondo giorno Bernardetta, temendo un inganno del demonio, gettò acqua santa in direzione della Signora. Ma questa le sorrise con volto ancor più benigno. Il terzo giorno le ordinò di ritornare alla grotta altre quindici volte, dopo le quali si manifestò dicendo: « Io sono l'Immacolata Concezione ». Intanto avvenivano anche miracoli e la fama delle apparizioni si estendeva per tutta la Francia e anche all'estero, destando un concorso straordinario di devoti e curiosi. Per accertarsi che Bernardetta non fosse una visionaria o malata di mente, si ebbero più sopralluoghi da parte dell'autorità ecclesiastica e di quella civile; i medici constatarono la normalità e la sincerità della fanciulla, e la Madonna provava la verità dell'apparizione coi miracoli. In breve tempo i numerosissimi devoti edificarono una chiesa che fu dai Sommi Pontefici arricchita di titoli e privilegi. L'acqua scaturita nell'interno della grotta continua anche ai nostri giorni a operare prodigi; in questa vengono immersi gli ammalati e molti vengono miracolosamente sanati.
5 lutego - Wspomnienie św. Agaty, dziewicy
i Męczennicy.
Agata jest jedną z najbar‐dziej czczonych w chrześcijaństwie świętych. Wiadomości o niej mamy przede wszystkim w aktach jej męczeństwa. W pierwszych wiekach chrześcijaństwa istniał bowiem zwyczaj, że sporządzano akta męczenników; większość z nich nie doczekała do naszych czasów. Akta męczeństwa Agaty pochodzą dopiero z V wieku. Według opisu męczeństwa Agata urodziła się w Katanii na Sycylii ok. 235 r. Po przyjęciu chrztu postanowiła poświęcić się Chrystusowi i żyć w dziewictwie. Jej wyjątkowa uroda zwróciła uwagę Kwincjana, namiestnika Sycylii. Zaproponował jej małżeństwo. Agata odmówiła, wzbudzając w od‐rzuconym senatorze nienawiść i pragnienie zemsty. Trwały wówczas prześladowania chrześcijan, zarządzone przez cesarza Decjusza. Kwincjan aresztował Agatę. Próbował ją zniesławić przez pozbawienie jej dziewiczej niewinności, dlatego oddał ją pod opiekę pewnej rozpustnej kobiety, imieniem Afrodyssa. Kiedy te zabiegi spełzły na niczym, namiestnik skazał Agatę na tortury, pod‐czas których odcięto jej piersi. W tym czasie miasto nawiedziło trzęsienie ziemi, w którym zginęło wielu pogan. Przerażony namiestnik nakazał zaprzestać mąk, gdyż dostrzegł w tym karę Bożą. Ostatecznie Agata poniosła śmierć, rzucona na rozżarzone węgle, 5 lutego 251 r. Jej ciało chrześcijanie złożyli w bezpiecznym miejscu poza miastem. Obecnie ciało Agaty znajdu‐je się w katedrze w Katanii. Wielkiej czci doznają jej relikwie, m.in. welon, dzięki któremu, jak niesie po‐danie, Katania niejeden raz miała doznać ocalenia. W dzień św. Agaty w niektórych okolicach poświęca się pieczywo, sól i wodę, które mają chronić ludność od pożarów i piorunów. Poświęcone kawałki chleba wrzucano do ognia, by wiatr odwrócił pożar w kierunku przeciwnym. W dniu jej pamięci karmiono bydło poświęconą solą i chlebem, by je uchronić od zara‐zy. Św. Agata jest patronką Sycylii, miasta Katanii oraz ludwisarzy. Wzywana przez kobiety karmiące oraz w chorobach piersi.
