Interference is the combination of two or more waves

    to form a composite(mixed) wave.

    PROPERTY OF EMI

  • 7/29/2019 3.Emi System

    8/36

Interference is the combination of two or more waves

    to form a composite(mixed) wave.

    PROPERTY OF EMI

    - based on the phase angle theta of two EM waves

  • 7/29/2019 3.Emi System

    9/36

Interference can be equal/ to signal/match level of signal

Interference can (DESTRUCTIVE)destroy the signal completely

Interference is the combination of two or more waves

    to form a composite(mixed) wave.

    PROPERTY OF EMI

    - based on the phase angle theta of two EM waves

    Aspects of EMC

  • 7/29/2019 3.Emi System

    11/36

    1) It describes the ability of an electrical or electronic

system to operate without interfering to other system.

    Aspects of EMC

  • 7/29/2019 3.Emi System

    12/36

    1) It describes the ability of an electrical or electronic

system to operate without interfering to other system.

    2) It also describes the ability of such systems to operateas intended within a specified electromagnetic

    environment.

    Aspects of EMC

    REASONS FOR COMPLIANCE

    Regulatory Requirements

    Domestic EMC: FCC Requirements

    Penalties:

    $7000/occurrence Bellcore

    European: EMC: EMC Directive

    Military/Aerospace Functionality and Mission Success

    THE EMC DIRECTIVE

89/336/EEC: The EMC Directive Adopted 1989 by Council of the European Communities

    Original Implementation 1 January 1992

    Amended by 92/31/EEC

Affects all products to be placed on the Market

Calls out essential protection requirements which includeemissions as well as susceptibility

Does not call out specifications or standards

New Approach Directive Essential Protection Requirements

    Allows Self-Certification

    CEMarking certifying products conformance

    15/36

    APPLICATION OF

    THE EMC DIRECTIVE

Electrical Apparatus Covered Exceptions: components, large installations and devices

that must comply with other Directives that addressEMC (e.g., telecommunications)

    Member states adopt ENs

    Penalties for non-compliance

    Country-by-Country basis. Example: UK Requirements:

    Fines up to 5000

Up to 3 months imprisonment for misuse of CE mark

    Forfeiture of equipment

    A system is electromagnetically compatible

    if-

-It does not cause interference to other systems.

  • 7/29/2019 3.Emi System

    18/36

    A system is electromagnetically compatible

    if-

-It does not cause interference to other systems.

-It is not susceptible to emissions by othersystems.

    19/36

    A system is electromagnetically compatible

    if-

-It does not cause interference to other systems.

-It is not susceptible to emissions by othersystems.

-It does not cause interference with itself.

    22/36

    Types of EMI

Radiative EMI :Any Electrical or electromechanical

devices, including motors, power lines, antennas,

traces on a PCB, and even the silicon components

on the PCB.Conductive EMI : This EMI primarily shows itself as

electrical noise on the power supply lines of an

application and can be caused by induced voltagespikes from other devices within a system.

    EMC problems

    Common examples:

-Lines across the face of a TV screen when blender or vacuum

    cleaner is working.

    - Damage to the telephone and electronic devices due to lightninginduced surges on the lines.

    - Computer interferes with the radio and TV reception.

    - Screen on the video display jitters when the fluorescent lights are

    on.

    Uncommon examples:

In Germany, a Wireless mobile car near opposite: a high power

    broadcast transmitter -interference.

Operating cellular phones: laptop computers and other

electronic devices in an aircraft can cause interference to

aircraft's communication systems and rudder (steering) control.

Cellular telephone calls: interferes with the pacemaker of a heart

    patient.

A dentists drill: begin to operate when the receptionist in the

adjacent room operate the cellular phone.
