By: Kevin Sears Regional Sales Manager Genesis Rescue Systems
This past summer at Fire Rescue International, Genesis Rescue Systems had a unique opportunity to partici-pate in a First Responder Training Program sponsored by General Motors. The introduction of the 2011 Chevy Volt was coupled with a progressive training program that is being offered to all rescuers by GM, covering the proper handling of emergencies involving the new electric vehicle.
The Chevy Volt operates on a high voltage, 16 Kilowatt Lithium Ion battery. The plug-in electric battery is sever-al hundred pounds and runs the length of the tradition-al engine tunnel in between passengers on the interior. The vehicle is designed to run 25-50 miles on electric alone. There is a 9.3 gallon fuel tank that runs a 1.4L En-gine Generator, should the battery be depleted during travel. This combustion engine is not used to drive the vehicle, but acts as a range extender. It generates elec-tricity to support the electric motors which propel the car. The car can run an additional 310 miles when the Engine Generator is supporting the electrical system.
With First Responder safety in mind, GM has done a fantastic job incorporating aids to help rescuers dur-ing emergencies involving the vehicle. Under the hood, there is a label with a fire helmet icon, which gives loca-tions of High Voltage lines, 12V lines and cut points in or-der to disable the electrical system and airbags. All High Voltage lines follow the industry standard fluorescent orange color. All electrical “cut zones” can be accessed without requiring hand tools. In the rear trunk area of the Volt, an access panel contains a wiring component
that too has a fire helmet and wire cutter icon. This is where first responders need to cut to disable the 12v and High Voltage system prior to beginning extrication.
The real threat to rescuers with the Chevy Volt is not the electrical system, but the High Strength Steel (HSS) used in 70% of the vehicles construction. Advanced or exotic steels such as Boron and Marten-site are being widely used in the construction of nearly all modern automobiles. Extrication tools, even those purchased as recently 5 years ago have no chance of cutting and conquering these UHSLA steels. Genesis Rescue Systems worked with members of the Chicago Fire Department Squad 5 during the extrication dem-onstration on the Volt at Fire Rescue International. Us-ing the Genesis C-236 cutter, the Firefighters were able to cut the strongest points of the vehicle, including the “B” post, with no slowing of the tool- in a single pass of the blades. Ron Moore of Firehouse Magazine reiter-ated that the advanced steels found in the Volt are the toughest on the streets. Evaluating your current rescue tools and considering immediate upgrades or replace-ments are the only solution to overcoming exotic steel. It is not a matter of “if” you will run into incidents involv-ing this automobile construction practice, but “when.”

As I travel the upper Midwest I am often asked, “What
does our Department need for a main power unit to
operate our hydraulic tools...a Triplex pump or a Trimo
pump?” The answer is “neither”...when I explain why,
a Simo pump makes the most sense - it is easy to
understand. If I were to ask, “How often does your
department have the need to operate 3 tools at any
given time?” The answer we get is “Seldom.” So, with
that in mind, why would you want to divert 33% of your
power units flow to a third tool that is rarely used. In
this case, you now have the primary tools (the spreader
and cutter) working on 33% of the pumps capability.
A traditional Simo power unit is diverting 50% of the
pumps flow to two rescue tools - usually the spreader
and cutter. With a Genesis Brand Simo pump, you have an
additional feature called overdrive. This feature
allows you to divert 50% of the pumps flow to each tool,
as mentioned above, or 100% of the flow to one tool
if desired. Pump flow plays a very important role when
cutting HSS (High-Strength Steel) and when powering
the bigger cutters. It is critical to apply maximum
pressure quickly to the HSS in order to successfully cut
this material. With the inception of the One Step Coupler
(OSC) Triplex or Trimo pumps are becoming less desirable.
OSC couplers allow the tools to be “hot swappable” and
in seconds rescuers can disconnect a spreader and
reconnect a ram right at the work site. With Triplex and

Trimo power units, many are set up with three hose reels
adding additional expense, adding additional weight,
and taking up valuable compartment space…not to
mention the reduced performance. OSC couplers have
added many benefits and are forcing end users to
re-evaluate the equipment they purchase.
