Congratulations to: Victoria Treadwell, Cow Belles 4-H Club for turning in her

July 4-H Club Secretary report by August 5.

4-H MEMBER AND VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION EVENT CANCELLED

Please be advised that due to lack of sign up by the registration deadline, unfortunately our 4-H Member and Volunteer Recognition Event scheduled for October 8, 2009 has been cancelled.

We only had three out of our twenty-six clubs signed up to attend. An event such as this requires much preparation so the deadline was very important.

Thank you to those of you who have returned your year end completion sheets. If you would like to pick up your members’ awards, please let us know by September 25 and we will have them ready for you to pick up after October 1. Please adhere to these dates so we can use our staff time efficiently. We would encourage you to do a Member Recognition Event on your own club level.

SEWING PATTERNS AVAILABLE

The McCall’s and Simplicity Pattern companies offer the 4-H family an educational discount on the line of current Fall/Winter patterns including vests, dresses, blouses, skirts, ties, pants, shirts, shorts, jumpers, aprons, sleepwear, boxers, crafts, and much more for $.95 each! If you are now or planning to be tak-ing or teaching a 4-H clothing project, then you’re eligible to place an order. To view the pattern choices and place an order, please call or stop by the 4-H office. We will place one order from the 4-H office. Order deadline is October 28.

ATTENTION INDIVIDUAL 4-H MEMBERS

Are you getting all the benefits available to you as a 4-H’er or are you missing out by not belonging to a 4-H Club? Do you complete year-end completion sheets? If you don’t, you won’t get credit for completing this year in 4-H.

Did you participate in the 4-H Public Presentation Event? Did you exhibit at County Fair? Did you do a community service, participate in at least two contributing educational events? Have you done more than one 4-H project this year? You may qualify for an Outstanding 4-H Member Award. But you can’t receive this award unless you fill out and send in the completion sheet. And don’t forget to keep your 4-H membership up-to-date. Your 4-H individual re-enrollment sheet (which was sent to you in August) needs to be returned to the 4-H Office as soon as possible.

ATTENTION 4-H CLUB LEADERS 4-H OFFICERS TRAINING

Wednesday, November 11, 10am -- Noon Herkimer Reformed Church

Everyone (4-H officers, members, leaders and parents) is invited to attend the 4-H Club Officers Training. 4-H Club officers will learn how to carry out their role whether it be President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, News Reporter, or Song & Recreational Leader. All 4-H club members will learn about parliamentary procedure and will gain some new ideas for better business meetings. Parents and leaders will get some tips on carrying out their guidance role in the business of parliamentary procedure and 4-H club officer responsibilities. ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please note: this educational event has been cancelled in the past because of lack of pre-registration. Since we recruit volunteers to share their knowledge, it is imperative that you sign up by the October 21st deadline to avoid cancellation. Volunteers are needed. If you feel confident in conducting a segment of 4-H Officer Training, or know of someone who would, please let us know immediately.

Please Note: Your re-enrollment forms must have been submitted to the 4-H office in order to participate in this event. Otherwise, you are not covered by our insurance and not eligible to attend any 4-H events.

Orders are due to the 4-H office by Monday, October 26th. No late orders will be accepted.

All orders must be pre-paid to insure delivery in time for Thanksgiving. Attention Independent

ANNUAL 4-H FUND RAISING EVENTS

Fund raising plays an important part in 4-H. Each year 4-H Clubs have the opportunity to boost their own club treasuries as well as contributing to the 4-H Private Support Fund by participating in the Annual 4-H Fund Raising Events.

These fundraisers help us provide many educational opportunities including trips, awards, and recognitions for Herkimer County 4-H members and leaders which would otherwise be impossible.

WE STRONGLY URGE EACH 4-H CLUB and INDEPENDENT MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE AND WORK TOWARD THIS COMMON GOAL. If you plan on attending any of the 4-H trips, participating in the fundraisers is a great way to help us offset the cost of a trip.

LOAN OUT REMINDER The 4-H Office is very happy to loan out many items such as banners, flags, display boards, clovers, posters, and curriculum materials. These items can be borrowed to help decorate a float for a parade, set up a display for National 4-H Week, or help teach subject matter projects.

Many items that were recently borrowed for parades and displays are still signed out. Please check if you have borrowed anything and return it to our office as soon as possible so it is available for others to borrow in the future.

Many thanks for helping make 4-H visible throughout Herkimer County!

The Cow Belles 4-H club met on July 13 at the Cooperstown Jr. Livestock Show. We had a pizza and wing party. We also discussed how everyone did that day and how to improve. Out of eleven members, nine showed at the FMJLS. Stephanie Treadwell, Victoria Treadwell, Wasayla Mower, Susan Miner, and Tess Hitchcock showed cows. Wasayla, Susie and Tess showed shorthorns and the Treadwell girls showed Holsteins. The goat showers were Kristy Hammont, Ellen Perkins, Natasha Mower and Michayla Mower. Even though Alex Rogers didn’t show, she observed the goats and how to show goats. We also discussed future plans for August. The Cow Belles will be having an end of the year party at the Perkins and the members will be cooking for the parents. We also are rounding up our cookbook fundraiser. To sum it all up, we had a successful July. On August 28th we held an end of the year party at the Perkins’. The members that were there to cook and prepare the dinner for the parents were Wasayla, Michayla, Natasha Mower, Stephanie and Victoria Treadwell, Tess Hitchcock, Kristy Hammont and Alex Rogers. We started preparing the dinner around 4:00 and it was served around 6:30. This year’s theme was quebobs. There was a veggie one with fresh vegetables from Shane’s garden. Then there was fresh pork from the Mowers and beef from the Treadwells. We also had corn on the cob and some side dishes. After dinner we finished filling our end of the year paperwork out and sketched out some plans for the upcoming year. The end of the year party was a success.

In August the Horsen’ Around 4-H Club learned basic fishing techniques.

In July, Hilary and Shelby Creater, and Dylan Hapeman from the Little Falls 4-H Friends showed at the Farmers’ Museum Junior Livestock Show. Hilary showed both in the

Holstein dairy and beef sections, while Shelby and Dylan showed in the Holstein and color breed sections. They were pleased with progress. Also participating in the FMJLS’ poster contest were Mary Kathryn, Keegan, and Claire Connolly. Congratulations go out to Mary Kathryn for winning first place for her age division with a great poster about ATV safety. During the summer so far, Joseph Bacher has been busy baking cookies and camping. The Seaman family has continued to be involved with dog rescues and pet sitting. The Connolly’s have enjoyed traveling out of state. Allison Lee has been busy with community activities in her home town. Laurel Brodkorb and Matt Treusdell have been busy gardening. The Mosher’s have been busy baking, sewing, and gardening. All are hoping to have great activities to enter at the fair.

In August Shelby Creater, Laurel Brodkorb, Abbey Mosher, Dylan Hapeman, Allison Lee, Hilary Creater and Sarah Piana participated in the Little Falls Canal Days Parade.

In September we will finalize our 4-H year and start making plans for the 2009-2010 4-H year.

DO YOU HAVE A 4-H MEMBERSHIP CARD?

If not, something may be wrong! 4-H membership cards are sent to all 4-H club Organizational Leaders at the start of the 4-H year when 4-H Enrollment Sheets and 4-H Club Programs are received at the 4-H Office.

Individual 4-H members also receive cards when their enrollment sheets are received. These cards provide proof that you are a 4-H member and may be needed for entrance to certain events.

If you do not have a membership card it may mean that:

your 4-H Club Enrollment or 4-H Individual Member Enrollment Sheet has not been received at the 4-H office or it is incomplete (if you are not officially enrolled, you are not officially a 4-H member).

your 4-H Club Program has not been received at the 4-H Office or is incomplete.

you recently joined an existing 4-H Club and your “new 4-H Member Sheet” has not been received at the 4-H Office - this is your official enrollment sheet.

perhaps your 4-H leader is holding your card for safe keeping.

perhaps our records are incorrect.

If you have not received a 4-H membership card or if you do not receive your 4-H Facts newsletter in the mail, ask your 4-H Club Organizational Leader about it or call us at the 4-H Office.

The goals are: to achieve a better understanding of the scope of NYS government; to create an awareness of career opportunities in state government; to gain a better understanding of our county as it relates to NYS; to provide the opportunity for delegates to meet with their legislators.

Applications for this event are due to the 4-H office by January 8. So don’t delay, call or email JoAnn ([email protected]) at the 4-H office today for your application.

The cost of the trip will be $50 per participant which is due with the application. The 4-H office covers the remainder of the cost.

ENCOURAGING OTHERS

TO JOIN 4-H

Do you know youth who are not 4-H members? Do you know an adult who is not a 4-H volunteer? Do you think the 4-H Youth Development program would benefit them? Do you think the 4-H Youth Development Program could benefit from their talents and resources? Would they like to learn more about the 4-H Youth Development Program?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, please encourage them to contact JoAnn at the 4-H office.

Don’t forget, if you identify an adult volunteer who ends up starting a new 4-H club, your clubs will be eligible for up to $50 to have a celebratory pizza party!

Does your 4-H Club like parties? Would you like to go to a pizza party with your club and some new friends?

Here’s how - help us start a new 4-H Club.

Your 4-H Club needs to identify a willing adult to be a 4-H Club Organizational Leader of a new 4-H Club. Inform JoAnn at the 4-H Office who the potential leader is and how to contact this person. A 4-H staff member will get in touch with him/her to start the club. When the new club enrollment sheet and program plan are received by the 4-H Office, a joint pizza party will be arranged for the new club and the club who helped form it.

Remember:

Your 4-H Club + New 4-H Club = Pizza Party
