They’ve arrived from Australia…Spain…Scandinavia…China via Italy…even from crosstown. They are among the industry’s most illustrious

brands, and they’re the newest arrivals to open showrooms at Forty One Madison.

Michael Aram crowns the building’s 8th floor renovation in a 4,000-

square-foot space dramatically aglow with the namesake metal artist’s

hand-worked creations. Taking his cues from nature, Aram sculpts the

material into forms imitative of twigs, seashells, leaves, flowers and the

like that become exquisite bowls, platters, candleholders, flatware and

other decorative yet functional objects for the table and beyond. The gift

and decorative accessories assortment is extraordinary and a growing

category that has segued into lighting and furnishings. The space is as

polished

and high-

wattage as

the products

themselves.

Also on the

8th floor

is another

Forty One

Madison newcomer, Circle Glass. It is exquisitely ensconced in a roomy

area filled with the most comprehensive array of glass barware, stemware,

serveware and giftware in the market. The encyclopedic scope of the

Circle Glass portfolio has helped make it the go-to resource for value-

driven glass goods for more than 30 years. Circle Glass has the

capability to produce totally handmade and machine-made glass in

all shades of color with specific Pantone numbers provided by private

label designers. Circle Glass also offers decorated designs as well as

clear options. Vases, carafes, decanters, planters, bowls, cake platters,

trays…the list goes on and on.

The company from Down Under—Maxwell & Williams—is far

above and beyond the cool factor as it brings a fresh, modern ethos to

the table. It’s no wonder the “designer

homewares” brand was snatched up in

a distribution partnership by Fitz and

Floyd. The cornerstone of the brand is

its White Basics line of casual category

dinnerware. To be found, also, are sev-

eral groups of colorful and high-spirited

patterns, plus a strong selection of prac-

tical oven-to-table cookware. Maxwell &

Williams is on the 6th floor.

Q Squared Design, on the 19th floor, is new to the American market but promises to make

an impact with its reinvention of melamine. Italian design is clearly in its DNA, with production

coming from its own manufacturing facilities in China, and the line includes plates, bowls and

serveware that are fashionable eye candy yet exceptionally practical. Creations are shapely,

clever and untypical of “your mother’s melamine” from the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Cristal de Sèvres is a renowned French brand with majestic, traditional designs that are

elegant, graceful and timeless. Since the 1850s, the company has distinguished itself with

unparalleled creative vision and skilled craftsmanship. Its roommate, La Mediterránea,

is all about dynamically colorful glass tableware made entirely of recycled glass. It’s an

unexpected contrast of classic and contemporary within a single space that warrants

exploration. These two companies can be found the on the 19th floor.

Industry veteran Nils Lindblad is serving up a veritable smorgasbord of home products – many

from Scandinavia along with a few others with overseas origins. In his own showroom,

NGL Associates on the 17th floor, you will find brands such as ASA-Selection, known for

its sleek porcelain and ceramic tabletop and accessories. You will also find cubed-form

kitchen and bath designs from Sweden’s Cult Design. From Italy’s SowdenDesign there’s an

innovative gourmet coffee press called SoftBrew and an automatic home scents dispenser

from Serene House.

From LaurieWhat a Spring Market. Retailers from across the USA (37 states), Canada, Central and South America and 45 other countries attended. And they were inspired.

Top four show observations:

– Each and every brand excited with new product offerings

– Retailers have the funds for and need new inventory

– Buying indicated a positive 2011 outlook, especially for the holiday selling season

– Retailers, designers, architects, hotels and restaurants were all shopping the show

Consumers “are who they are” – now more than ever. With social networking, there are no more personas. Porcelain outside at BBQs, plastic cutlery in the dining room, color mixing, price point mixing and all in between: It’s not only okay, it’s how we shop, dress, entertain and live.
