MARKET LIVESTOCK UPDATEMARKET LIVESTOCK UPDATE

On June 15, we received the announcement from the MD State4-H O�ce regarding 4-H participation in the month of August.The announcement did not provide a de�nite answer about 4-Hparticipation in the 2020 Garrett County Fair. Instead it provideda list of conditions which must be met in order for 4-Hers toparticipate safely. We will meet with representatives from theGarrett County Fair, Garrett County Livestock Association, andthe Garrett County Health Department to determine if theseconditions can be met to allow 4-H participation.

To help in the decision-making process, a survey will be sent to each family with 4-H marketanimals. This survey will ask families if they are comfortable attending shows and the sale atthe fair. It will also gather information about the current status of animals and the needs andconcerns of 4-Her’s with livestock projects. The results of the survey will help the 4-H staffdetermine how we can be most helpful as our members complete their livestock projects.

We will soon have an updated version of the marketing brochure “Buy Local Meat.” We hopethis brochure is helpful as you reach out to potential buyers for your animals. The informationmay be especially helpful to a �rst-time buyer. The brochure describes the amount and cuts of

meat you will get from a livestock purchase. This year it will include a list of local meatprocessors that are available to accept limited numbers of 4-H animals. As we have indicatedin each of the previous livestock updates, this year your best outcome may be to locate aprivate buyer or put the meat it in your own freezer.

The main thing we hope for in any project is that the member learns something. This yearprovides a very unique and unfortunate set of circumstances but there is still a lot to belearned. Remember to keep track of your expenses and income. This is valuable informationno matter what the �nal outcome of your project.

I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS,WHERE CAN I GET ANSWERS?4-H staff and all the other Extension O�ce employees areworking remotely and are continuing to provide resources forfamilies, farms, and businesses. Although the 4-H O�ce ismandated to remain closed to the public, our 4-H staff isavailable to answer any questions by phone or email.
