Your Dues At Work For You!By Jerry Trepanier

Here is an update on several projects in process at KalRod:

Kitchen Update - After many years of neglect, the kitchen update project is almost complete. Multiple

repairs, some of which more extensive than initially anticipated have been completed. Cabinets,

electrical, plumbing and appliances have also been updated to enable a fully functional and hazard free

kitchen to support club activities. This project will be completed in Q2 and will result in a fully functional

clubhouse.

Upper Range Bathroom - Progress on the indoor heated bathroom for the upper ranges continues to be

made. A site for the building has been selected. Blueprints are complete. Bids have been requested and

are in progress with responses expected end of Q1, early Q2. With bid selection complete in Q2/Q3,

construction is expected to start in Q3/Q4 of 2019. As a reminder, this is for a two room indoor heated

and accessible bathroom for use at the upper ranges.

200 Yard Rife Range Fence - We had some damage from the wind storm in late February. The wind

knocked down the fence at the rifle range. The fence was removed and a temporary fence

erected. Repairs to this fence will be underway in the next few weeks and will be covered by insurance

(minus the deductible).

Plow Truck - repairs to the plow truck were successful in getting another year out of it. This will be

evaluated over the summer to see what we need to do for next year.

Work day - plans are underway for the May 11th work day. Many of our general maintenance activities

are accomplished this weekend such as painting, siding, small building repairs, grounds maintenance,

target and target backer repair & construction, etc. This is our highest bang for the buck event to keep the

club looking nice and taking care of many of smaller projects. These projects are expected to be started

and completed all in Q2, most on May 11.

Lots of little things are taken care of by club member volunteers every week, thanks to them for that! If

you have any questions, please contact a Director or Club Officer.

Spring Work Day

This year’s Work Day has been

scheduled for Saturday, 11 May.

Plan to arrive between 8-9am. We

will once again co-ordinate the

various work details from the main

room in the Clubhouse, so when you

show up that morning, please report

there first. Also, if you have any

special skills -- especially in the

building trades -- please make that

known when you sign in.

This is an all-day, club-wide event.

All ranges will be closed starting

Friday afternoon and will remain

closed until all of the Work Day

projects (including clean-up) have

been completed.

Typical projects include building

new target backers for the ranges,

building/renovating/painting

existing structures, and improving

the landscaping around the grounds.

Spouses/significant-others are also

welcome to attend and pitch-in, as

are responsible youth.

This is one of our biggest and most

important annual events. And it is

an excellent opportunity for you to

get involved and to help make this

the kind of Club you want to belong

to. So if you can, by all means,

attend this event. Even if you can

only give a few hours of your time

in the morning, that too will make a

big difference.

If you know someone who wishes to

join the Club, bring them along –

this is one of the event for which

they can earn “points” towards

Membership.

As always, lunch will be provided

for all participants.

Even if the weather is somewhat

adverse (such as light rain), we will

still hold the event. Watch the

website for updates!

Having Problems With Your

Gate Card?

The Club recently updated the

card-reader system at the front

gate. This new system is a much-

needed improvement that will

allow troubleshooting and card

maintenance remotely, rather than

requiring members with card

reading issues to wait until

someone can be on-site to fix

them. Unfortunately, a small

number of Members’ cards are not

compatible with this new system.

If you find that your card does not

open the gate, please contact

Membership Secretary John

Ceglarek AS SOON AS

POSSIBLE. Best is via email at:

membership@

We Are Still A Cold Carry

Facility!

NO “holster work”

Remember! All ranges at KRGC

are COLD CARRY ONLY! That

means no carrying of visible,

loaded weapons – not too/from

your vehicle nor around the firing

line. And NO holster draw

practice is permitted. Loaded

firearms may be handled only at

the firing line, when the line is

deemed “hot”. The sole

exceptions are special supervised

events, such as Action Pistol,

which require one-on-one

supervision of the shooter. CPL

holders may carry a

CONCEALED firearm, but open

carry of a loaded firearm is NOT

allowed on Club property.

Infractions could result in a loss of

Membership. SAFETY FIRST!

KRGC Helps Sponsor Young

Shooters’ Programs

Recently, KRGC has agreed to help

sponsor several local groups of

young shooters. This was in the

form of monetary donations to local

high school trap teams (Hackett and

Vicksburg) and agreeing to host a

Range Day for the K-College

Republicans. These are some

GREAT examples of our Club

helping to support the future of

shooting sports in our community!

Looking For A New Treasurer

At the end of this year, our current

Treasurer -- the eloquent and refined

Bruce Gelbaugh -- will be stepping

down from his position. Any

Member wishing to fill that role is

encouraged to attend the Officer

Election near the end of September.

Experience in accounting is

certainly preferred but not required.

Spring Shooting Events

With the coming of Spring, there are

a number of shooting events starting

up. These include both regularly

occurring events like Sporting

Clays, Action Pistol, and Thursday

night Trap, as well as singular

events, like Chris Ronfeldt’s

Precision Rimfire shoot. Be sure to

check out the enclosed flyers!

Interesting Article

KRGC Vice President Randy

Hendrick directs our attention to a

very interesting article on the

notorious 1986 FBI shootout in

Miami, which resulted in a complete

renovation of FBI equipment and

tactics. The article is available in

the March edition of Firearms

News, both in print and online

(firearmsnews.com).“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,

the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

EMPTY BRASS… Mostly by Pete DeWitt Comments to [email protected]

My wife and I drove along the Ohio Coast of Lake Erie last weekend looking for migrating ducks, Camp Perry and the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). We found all three.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is NOT your typical politically correct art museum. The facility is great,

the art is fantastic, the admission is free, and they have a large room devoted to medieval armor and early weapons. From a medieval German dagger on display: (translated from the original Latin) “Neither without cause, nor fearfully / Between arms and silent law / Prize truth and fight for one’s country”.

Some Club Members Know A Lot About CAMP PERRY. For the Rest of Us -

Camp Perry is a National Guard training facility located on the shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio near Port Clinton.

You get a National Guard site named after you by capturing most of the British Lake Erie Fleet in battle during the war of 1812. In addition to its regular mission as a military training base, Camp Perry has the 2nd largest outdoor rifle range in the world (The NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM is the largest) and hosts the NRA-sponsored National Rifle Matches.

Camp Perry also hosts the Camp Perry CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) North Store.

The CMP is a Federally Chartered organization tasked with (a) instructing citizens of the United States in marksmanship, (b) promoting practice and safety in the use of firearms, and (c) conducting competitions in the use of firearms. They facilitate these tasks by selling US surplus rifles and pistols at attractive prices for use in marksmanship programs.

Garand rifles seem to be the primary Camp Perry North Store offering in recent years. This last Saturday they had a

nice selection of M1-Garands with a starting price of about $900 for what appeared to be well rebuilt rifles in both 30-06 and .308. The price for better and more collectable rifles goes up from there. Per the CMP site, each M1 Garand rifle sold by CMP is an authentic U.S. Government rifle that has been inspected, head spaced, repaired if necessary and test fired for function. The Camp Perry North Store: 2500 Davey, Port Clinton, OH 43452 (419) 635-2141 “National Match” is a term usually indicating that a M1, M14, or M16 service rifle or a commercial equivalent has been assembled to strict military advanced marksmanship standards and can be used at Camp Perry rifle matches. The term has evolved over time – currently it refers (these are generalities) to a 20-inch AR-15 with a carry handle that remains orthodox in appearance, and has a 20-inch barrel, standard handguard, carry handle, standard military sights, standard pistol grip, sling, stock and a trigger tested to be not lighter than 4.5 lbs. And yes – I want one (of each: M1, M14 & M16).

Several knowledgeable KR&G people have said great things about the Camp Perry Small Arms Firing Schools

(SAFS), sponsored by CMP and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. These are very low-cost training events taught at this world class facility by people who are experts at their craft. There are four “standard” SAFS courses available: Pistol, Advanced Pistol, Rifle and Advanced Rifle. Cost is $50.00 for adults ($35.00 for juniors) for a SAFS class. This includes all instruction, a loaner M9 9mm service pistol (a Beretta 92F) or M-16 service rifle, ammunition, T-shirt, SAFS certificate and handout materials. For more info or to sign up, contact Amy Cantu at [email protected] or (419) 635-2141 ext. 602.

We found migrating ducks too. Ohio has some terrific bird watching areas right up next to Lake Erie. Raised walkways

let you get into the marshes while keeping your toes dry. Raised viewing stands provide great views of resident bald eagles soaring (and doing their own version of duck watching). Start at McGee Marsh. Get an early start on your drive and you can enjoy several hours of prime bird watching and still get to the Camp Perry CMP store before they close at 4:00.

THE PINK RIFLE. I am getting involved with the Appleseed Project (see notes below on the June KR&G hosted Appleseed event). My wife and I met Stacy P – a National Coordinator for Appleseed – for coffee a while back. Over coffee Stacy mentioned how well the Cerakote ceramic coating work on her now very pink Ruger 10/22 rifle had turned out. Wow – what a great idea! I turned towards my wife. Before I could get a word out, she said “No”. I tried a “but honey..” and she said “No” again. Darn.

J&L AMMUNITION.

Like craft beer? How about CRAFT Ammo? Jason and Logan of J&L AMMUNITION (KR&GC members!) have set up a custom reloading business. They are focusing on the needs of rifle shooters wanting well-crafted ammunition for long distance/ PRC events and hunting. What appealed to me is their willingness to meet with their customers face-to-face, and then to work in total transparency on building the ammunition the customer wants. They will build ammo to their customer’s specifications including component selections, or help their customer develop a component spec that works for that customer’s needs. Each powder charge of each custom rifle round is weighed individually to within .1 grains. They can use customers supplied brass cases or supply the brass too. The prices are good & delivery is fast. FYI, these guys are financing this business with their full-time day jobs. Call ahead to make sure they are in before you stop by. Open mostly 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on weekdays and 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM Saturdays. 269-359-2836. 301 East Michigan Ave, Agusta 49012. JLAMMUNITION.COM. Good pistol ammo too. Nice guys, and I like their dog.

PROJECT APPLESEED MARKSMANSHIP TRAINING COMING TO KR&G

We are bringing Project Appleseed training back to KR&G on June 29, 2019 - June 30, 2019. Project Appleseed is a non-profit traveling clinic teaching traditional rifle marksmanship and a bit of US heritage over a two-day weekend. Cost will be about $60 for adults and $20 for students. Bring your own 22 rifle (some loaners may be available) & ammo. Click on the Events link on the Appleseed Website WWW.Appleseedinfo.org for more info & to sign up. I have attended two Appleseed training events as a student - most recently last July at this Club. This is GREAT basic and intermediate training on how to be accurate and safe with a rifle. Lots of Range Safety Officers keep everyone safe. Lots of fun trigger time. Attended by kids to seniors, male & female, beginners to advanced. Friendly & supportive instructors. Able to accommodate many physical challenges. Family friendly! Check with Pete DeWitt with questions. [email protected]

THE CLUB NEEDS A NEW TRUCK.

It must be strong, full size, reliable, 4WD and preferably free. You have seen our Club pickup truck plowing the snow off the road that goes up to the ranges, hauling building materials and trash, and otherwise doing all that a working truck does. Our indispensable truck is on its last legs. Got a truck for us? Contact Tom Fenwick. We will put your name on a club shooting bench. You will become one of the immortals…

WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE OF AT THE CLUB? IN THIS NEWSLETTER? Let us know. I would like to bring in the J&L guys to put on a reloading demonstration / quick class. Anyone interested? Would YOU like to submit a page or two? Emails to [email protected]

ANY LAST WORDS? WELL, SINCE YOU ASKED…

• From a bumper sticker: “Bad politicians are elected by good people who didn’t vote”.

• Please - Be a safe, polite, and informed ambassador for the 2nd Amendment & our Club. Our conduct, attitude, knowledge and words matter!

• A take-away from a Massad Ayoob Mag 40 training class last fall: Be a good person and a good neighbor. You may find yourself in a situation someday where a prosecutor is making up his/her mind on whether to charge you criminally for what you understood to be a self-defense situation. That decision may be swayed one way or the other by your reputation with your neighbors and the community.
