Lent is that time of the year when we go to

confession so we can fulfill the Church’s precept to receive communion at least once a year. I think the sacrament of penance is one of the least appreciated sacraments. I would like to give you some tips about this sacrament. First, confession is not spiritual direction. The sacrament of confession is meant to lead us to examine our lives, identify the things that have put a distance between God and us, and make a commitment to change. Spiritual direction, on the other hand, is a means to seek God’s presence in our daily lives. If you feel like you need to unload, to be listened to, to tell your story, or you are seeking for answers then probably you need a good session of spiritual direction. In that case, you should call the parish and make an appointment, the priest can carve out some time to listen to you, pray with you, and give you some sound advice. Second, come prepared. Sometimes the Holy Spirit moves you on the spur of the moment to approach the priest and we need to listen, however, that should not be the regular way. Most of the work of a good confession is done outside of the confessional. We are meant to prepare by doing a good examination of conscience, praying about our lives, asking God forgiveness and for the gift of true repentance. If you are the type that gets nervous or you are forgetful, you could write something down that will help you remember your sins. Third, be specific without giving sordid details. Saying things like “I am a terrible sinner” or “I have broken all the commandments” does not help the priest understand the gravity of your sins and betray a lack of preparation. Sometimes people are vague because they are embarrassed by their sins. The confessional is the place where you take responsibility. Don’t try to fool the priest, you are saying your sins out loud not for him but for God and he already knows them. Fourth, own your sins. The sacrament is about you and your relationship with God. It is not about the sins of your husband, wife, children, coworkers, boss, etc. Try to find ways to tell your sins without the word “but.” Every sin has a social dimension. Most likely in a situation of sin you are not the only one sinning, however, you are not confessing their sins but yours. Fifth, ignore the priest. I know, it sounds strange. I am not asking you to ignore good advice, I am asking you to ignore the fear and the embarrassment you may feel when you say your sins to him. Also develop a tough skin; not every priest, every time is the best match for you. You may get a reaction you didn’t expect from the priest, do not lose your peace. He may misunderstand you or ignore your needs, remember this is a moment of grace for you, even when a particular priest is not the best instrument at that moment.

Please keep in mind all these elements and come to confession this Lent. Every time you receive the sacrament you receive special graces to live your life closer to God.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to ob-serve real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 pro-claims: “The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be re-ceived from God with joy, not with nitpicking

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lec-tionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod’s temple. Arche-ologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed as-cended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquar-ters and model for their churches elsewhere. The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathemati-cian’s dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospi-table though, since they encourage Christians to “depart from error” and declare that “Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God.” In ancient times, those who prayed here after walking around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them.
