video profiles: making a differenceJimmy and Courtney Cahill
Both father and daughter have been assisted by the MGH Institute’s Speech, Language and Literacy
Center. Courtney, who received reading assistance as a pre-teen, is studying at the University of
Massachusetts Boston and hopes to follow in her mother’s steps and become a nurse. Jimmy, a South
Boston native, continues to work with students and faculty in the Aphasia Center recovering from a
stroke caused from fighting a fire.
Sherline Chery-Morisset
A native of Haiti, School of Nursing graduate Sherline Chery-Morisset ’06 started the relief agency Sante
Fanm Ak Lafanmi in 2009 to give something back to her homeland. A nurse practitioner at Boston
Community Medical Group, she has returned to the Caribbean nation several times since the devastating
earthquake hit last January. Her long-term goal is to create a Women’s Wellness Center on the island.
Roya Ghazinouri
The in-patient clinical supervisor for physical therapy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Iran native Roya
Ghazinouri ’99, ’06 knew from an early age she wanted to help people. Dr. Ghazinouri is Chief Operating
Officer of Operation Walk Boston, a non-profit that sends teams of health care professionals to impoverished
nations. She completed her Masters degree in 1999 and her Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2006, and
currently holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the school.
Roz Puleo
A third-year student in the Master of Science in Nursing program, Roz Puleo is constantly on the go.
Since starting her nurse practitioner education at the MGH Institute, she has helped invent an award-winning
product at the MIT AgeLab, taught at Tufts University, and completed a triathlon—just three months after
donating a kidney to her father. She plans on being part of a medical mission to the Dominican Republic
during this year’s winter break.
scholarship investments: support-a-studentThank you in advance for participating in tonight’s Support-a-Student pledge opportunity. All gifts made
tonight will provide additional scholarship support to qualified MGH Institute students enrolled in one of
our programs in nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or medical imaging.
Student Facts:
• MGH Institute programs are in high demand,
and very competitive. Only 40% of applicants are
offered admission.
• A health sciences education is an expensive
investment; nearly 75% of the MGH Institute’s
1,000 students receive some financial aid.
• Tuition and fees to complete the 14-month,
Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
is $44,125; while the three-year nurse practitioner
program and three-year Doctor of Physical Therapy
degree exceeds $90,000.
• At current funding levels, scholarship awards
cover an average of 35% of the total cost to
complete one of our two- or three-year degrees.
And this year, the Institute granted its first full
scholarships covering 100% of tuition.
We must do more to keep these programs
accessible to bright, talented young men and
women. Here’s a sample of how your pledge can
help defray the cost of a student’s education:
• $2,500 provides scholarship assistance equal to a
two-credit course, such as Ethical Issues in Health
Care or Neuromotor Speech Disorders.
• $1,000 can help students afford a top-quality
education, learning from distinguished and award-
winning faculty, including a Fulbright Scholar.
• $500 can help students cover direct expenses
like their lab fees for Gross Anatomy in their
first semester.
• $250makes it easier for students to afford
everyday educational expenses such as textbooks,
lab coats, or scrubs.
• $100 can support students as they experience a
range of valuable clinical placements in schools
and hospital or community settings.
Scholarship aid provided by the Institute (2010-2011) $2.3 million
Total value of federal loans administered by the Institute $22 million
Percent of students receiving institutional scholarships/grants 24%
Average scholarship award (two years of study) $42,333

david laliberteSpeaker
The closest David LaLiberte ever got to an oven while growing up was when he
would watch his mother and four sisters bake in their kitchen.
Today, he’s making his family proud as the owner of Treat Cupcake Bar, Needham’s
first cupcake boutique and the nation’s first interactive cupcake bakery.
Before opening Treat, LaLiberte had great success in Boston’s investment scene.
Starting fresh out of college as a lunch orderer at Fidelity Investments, he steadily
rose through the company’s ranks while spending his evenings getting his MBA at
Boston College.
Within ten years, he became head trader for the Magellan Fund. In 1996, he
joined Vinik Asset Management as their head of equity trading. He spent nine years
there before retiring in 2005 to spend more time with his wife, two daughters, and
numerous pets.
Looking for a way in which to channel his creativity, he began to develop a retail
concept around the growing popularity of specialty cupcakes. Treat Cupcake Bar
opened last June, and it has been a hit for both kids and adults who can choose
between several flavors and frosting, and 20 toppings, to create their own
specialized dessert.
He also wanted to give something back to his community, so he developed a pro-
gram called “Treat Others Well.” Each month, a special cupcake is created in which
50% of the proceeds goes to a charitable organization.
Although Laliberte has yet to master actually creating baked goods, he continues to
work in close partnership with design and business consultants, his core manage-
ment team, and the talented bakers to ensure the highest quality product.
In addition to the funds raised through tonight’s
Scholarship Gala, the MGH Institute has received
$413,000 in new commitments since last year’s Gala
that will further enhance our scholarship resources:
LUCY A. BURR SCHOLARSHIP$150,000
Established in 2006 with a gift from Mrs. Francis
(Hooks) Burr, this endowed fund supports students
demonstrating financial need with preference for
students in the School of Nursing. Mrs. Burr pledged
an additional gift this year to increase scholarships
for the Accelerated BSN and Direct-Entry nursing
programs. Mrs. Burr has been an advocate for quality
patient care for nearly three decades and a member
of the Massachusetts General Hospital Ladies
Visiting Committee since 1979.
MGH NURSES’ ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
$143,000
The Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses’
Alumnae Association represents the alumnae of Mass
General’s original School of Nursing (1873–1981).
The MGH NAA has supported a number of nursing-
related activities at the Institute over the years,
including the funding of several annual student
scholarships. In 2010 the association established
a permanent endowment fund to guarantee scholar-
ship support for nursing students in perpetuity.
ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION$80,000
The MGH Institute was one of 63 nursing schools
nationwide to receive funding under the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation’s New Careers in Nursing
Scholarship Program, which was launched in 2008 to
address the national nursing shortage and fuel the
pipeline of diverse nurse faculty. Eight MGH Institute
nursing students from underrepresented groups or
disadvantaged backgrounds will receive grants of
$10,000 each.
JAMES C. MELVIN SCHOLARSHIP$25,000
The James C. Melvin Trust’s support of student
scholarships at the MGH Institute dates back to
1988. Over the years the Melvin Trust has awarded
more than $1.4 million to Institute students, and
provided essential seed money to pilot a need-based
financial aid program at the Institute.
VIRGINIA DELAWARE ZAHKA
NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
$15,000
Sumner and Emeline Brown, SON ’59, established
the Zahka scholarship in 1991 in memory of Mrs.
Brown’s mother. Mrs. Brown, who passed away in
2006, was a graduate of the MGH Institute’s prede-
cessor, the MGH School of Nursing, and worked as a
nurse at Mass General for many years. Mr. Brown
continues to be a close friend of the MGH Institute.

anne gatelyPutnam Family Scholar
Working with underprivileged families is the driving force behind Anne Gately’s goal
to become a nurse practitioner.
For the second-year student in the Master of Science in Nursing program, it’s the
continuation of her mission of service that has included volunteering as an under-
graduate at the University of Vermont, and a post-graduate stint with AmeriCorps.
She found helping the poor while working at a non-profit organization to be
challenging and empowering. But she soon realized she wanted to make a more
direct impact in the lives of people.
“I saw the critical role health care plays in strengthening a community, and I realized
people need a good foundation of health or they will never be able to break the cycle
of poverty,” says Gately, a 2010 Putnam Family Scholar.
Upon graduating from the School of Nursing, she wants to help families understand
how their medical history, lifestyle, and other risk factors can converge and educate
them on how to make healthier choices.
“So many of our community’s most vulnerable are not getting enough accurate
information to improve their lives,” she says. “Without proper primary care, they
will remain at a disadvantage.”

matt natansonPutnam Family Scholar
It took Matt Natanson three years while working full time to complete the ten
science prerequisite courses he needed to apply to a physical therapy program.
It was worth the wait.
“It’s been great, especially this past summer when I was working in a clinic for the
first time,” says the second-year student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
“I got to see all the little things that don’t always get translated in the classroom.”
Like many students who attend the MGH Institute, he did not follow a straight line
to his new career choice. The Sudbury native originally considered medicine upon
entering the University of Rochester. At 17, however, he was not prepared to commit
to more than 10 years of education, and switched to a dual major in English and
Film, with a minor in Psychology.
It wasn’t until several years later, after he saw how physical therapists helped
out when his father was diagnosed with cancer, that pursuing a health care career
reappeared on his radar.
“The more I researched, the more I liked,” says Natanson, a 2010 Putnam Family
Scholar. “I was drawn to helping people improve the quality of their lives in a
practical and useful manner.”

kristi eckardtCVS MinuteClinic Scholar
Students at the MGH Institute find their passion for health care in myriad ways be-
fore arriving at the Charlestown Navy Yard campus.
Kristi Eckardt discovered hers as a chaplain at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and
the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
The Harvard Divinity School graduate spent several years ministering to the sick at
the two Boston hospitals, during which time she observed the pivotal role nurses
played in the lives of their patients.
After launching a church and having a short stint teaching communication skills at
an area college, she realized her true calling was to become a nurse practitioner.
“I found out I really missed health care,” says Eckardt, the 2010 CVS MinuteClinic
Scholar who is in her first year in the Master of Science in Nursing program. “I
wanted the opportunity to become a multi-dimensional leader in nursing, and the
MGH Institute was the place I felt I could learn to do that best.”
It hasn’t taken her long to confirm her initial beliefs.
“The faculty are extraordinary practicing clinicians, they are excellent classroom
teachers, and they really want to teach,” she says.
Upon graduating from the three-year program in 2013, she envisions working as a
clinician and educator, and eventually mentoring future cohorts of nurses.
MinuteClinic Family Nurse Practitioners are today’s health care heroes. They work on the front lines of patient care and are redefi ning the way health care is delivered every day.
As a MinuteClinic FNP, you will be a leader in your community, treating and educating patients to help them live healthier lives by providing easy access to quality health care. And with the t help them live healthier lives by oviding to quality health And with the strength and support of a Fortune 20 company, you will have the tools, training and resources needed to be a healer, an educator, a hero.

“There is so much we still don’t know about autism,” says Annette Rodriguez Ellis.
“But I do know that these kids also have something to say, they just don’t always
know how.”
Ellis is a second-year student in the Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders at the MGH Institute. It was while working with children with autism as a
special education teacher at the New England Center for Children that she discovered
a way to have an impact in a more meaningful way.
“I didn’t even know speech-language pathology existed,” says Ellis, the 2010 John
Hancock Financial Services Scholar. "Once I learned about it, I discovered it was the
perfect fit for me.”
Ellis moved from her native Venezuela to New Hampshire when she was 13. Even
though she was completely bilingual, issues surrounding communication resonated
with her even as a psychology major at Dartmouth College.
The speech-language pathology program’s dual emphasis on both educational and
medical settings will allow her the flexibility to decide where she can make the most
impact once she graduates next spring.
"I’m attending the Institute because everyone should be able to reach their full
potential, whatever it may be, and I believe we need language to do that.”

Michael Monteiro thought recovering from a soccer injury while at Keene State
College was a hardship until he met other patients who were recovering from non-
athletic injuries.
"Seeing them work through their own injuries helped me understand the important
role physical therapists play," says the first-year student in the Doctor of Physical
Therapy program. "I realized that unless they had a successful recovery, they would
be unable to return to their jobs and provide for their families."
Monteiro, the 2010 Sanders Family Scholar, decided he wanted to help people, but
was unclear of his direction. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
and a short stint playing professional club soccer, he took a job as a mental health
counselor. He then became a personal trainer where he reconnected his passion for
athletics and physical fitness. He enjoyed the work, but soon realized the limitations
in that role.
"I would get to a point where I couldn’t help them any further, and it was frustrating,”
he recalls. "I wanted to explore deeper into the science of physical wellness, and
becoming a physical therapist was the way for me to do that."
Charles and Ann Sanders congratulate the MGH Institute of Health Professions on its 34-year history of providing an outstandinghealth care education to practitioners, researchers, and academics. Graduates go on to provide both care and leadership in their chosen profession.
We are proud to be Founders of the MGH Institute and receive great satisfaction from its past accomplishments and the knowledgethat its future is in excellent hands.

viena yeungMassachusetts General Hospital Scholar
Viena Yeung began understanding the crucial role languages play in education
after she and her family moved from Hong Kong to the Dominican Republic.
A native Cantonese speaker, Yeung was enrolled in an American elementary school
there, and mainstreamed after two years of English as a Second Language classes.
She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages and Literatures
from the University of Chicago, and a Master of Science in Education from Brooklyn
College, the City University of New York.
As a New York City Teaching Fellow, she taught second grade at a public elementary
school in Brooklyn. Later, she worked as a teacher and manager of Early/Head Start
programs in New York City’s Lower East Side, a neighborhood composed of mostly
Chinese and Dominican immigrant families.
Yeung discovered the value of becoming a bilingual speech-language pathologist
who could help children with language disorders catch up with their peers. It
spurred her to pursue a new career in communication sciences and disorders.
The 2010 Massachusetts General Hospital Scholar has worked with children
at the Speech, Language and Literacy Center during her current course of studies,
which has prompted her to take additional courses at the Institute so that she
can also earn a Reading Specialist license upon graduation.
“The emphasis on providing real-world, intensive clinical and professional
experiences really sets the Institute’s program apart from others,” she says.

amy mcdonoughOracle/Phase Forward Scholar
By the time Amy McDonough began in the Graduate Program in Medical Imaging
this fall, she knew all too well about x-rays.
McDonough, the 2010 Oracle Phase Forward Scholar, experienced extreme back
pain after growing several inches as a 14-year-old. That led to an odyssey of tests
and procedures that revealed she had scoliosis.
After wearing a chest to bottom hard plastic back brace (“A teenager’s worst
nightmare”) for almost three years, doctors then discovered she had a stress
fracture in her spine, which led to more bone scans, MRIs, and x-rays.
The pain eased by the time she graduated with a business degree from Suffolk
University. But working in marketing was not fulfilling, and soon her interest in
science (she originally was a biology major) and her x-ray experiences led her to
a new career path at the MGH Institute.
“I want to be one of those radiologic technologists that someone can look back
and say ‘She really made me feel at ease’,” McDonough says, recalling the care she
received. “Just to know I helped make things a little less stressful will make my day.”
