PARSHAT NOACH - פרשת נח
SHALOM AND WELCOME … to Jerusalem's premier egalitarian Masorti (Conservative) synagogue. Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael is
made up of English speaking olim and native Israelis. Locals and tourists attend our shul on weekdays,
shabbatot, and chagim. Our worldwide Friends of Moreshet network gives an opportunity for Jews in all
countries to have membership in a captivating Israeli Beit Knesset.
Conservative Judaism is intended to be the nexus between Jewish tradition and the modern world…
Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael is that meeting place.
PARSHAT NOACH -
ואשר תו, בתב א -- And [Gd] blotted out every living substance which was upon the face of the ground, both
human, and cattle, and creeping thing, and fowl of the heaven; and they were blotted out from the earth;
and Noach only was left, and they that were with him in the ark. (Genesis 7:23) It seems a bit strange that
the text reads and Noach only was left– after all, before the flood Noach is twice referred to as a tzaddik
( יש נח יק א ים צד מ יה ת י and ה י אתך-כ ית א יק ר ני צד לפ ) and we know by reading later that Noach’s family
members also survive the flood ( ן ה-צא, מ שתך--התב ה, וא ניך את ניך-ונשי וב ך. ב ת א -- 'Go forth from the ark,
you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons' wives with you’.) So, why the abandoning language of
and Noah only was left? Rabbi Pinchas Shapiro of Koritz answers that a true tzaddik would have pleaded
with Gd on behalf of the rest of humanity and creation which was to be wiped out. Yea, Rabbi Pinchas
believes that Gd desired that Noach should petition for a repeal of Gd’s judgment; Noach’s silence causes
Gd to re-evaluate Noach’s status as righteous and as worthy of progenitorial merit. Rabbi Adam Frank
