Community Garden

Our religious school students under the direction of Moreh (Teacher) Tom Livny are in the process of creating a small garden. The goal of this garden, is for the students and community to develop a connection between what they study and celebrate; the earth, seasons and cycles of life. The children broke ground this month. We now collect compostables on Sunday morning for the garden. You may bring anything from egg shells to grass clippings and twigs. Thanks!

TCP Election Day Bake Sale

Tuesday, November 8

8:00 AM - 5:30 PM

IT’S A TRADITION & A MITZVAH!

We need lots of home baked items (from scratch or a mix) - Cookies, brownies, apple cake,

fruit pies, mandelbrot, matzo bark, cupcakes, sweet breads and savories are all popular.

Please label your baked goods with what it is and NOTE ANYTHING CONTAINING NUTS.

Our election day neighborhood voters look forward to our Bake-Sale which nets anywhere

from $200 to $400 for TCP, so it's a great Mitzvah to bring in a home baked goody for the

sale. Baked goods can be dropped off on Sunday morning or on Monday for the sale on Tues-

day. We expect an exceptionally large turnout this year!

Also

Volunteers are needed to work 1, 2, 3 hour shifts, between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm.

Please email, text or call Patti Price at: - [email protected] or 610-349-7515

to sign up for this Mitzvah.

On est toujours le Juif de quelqu’un. This French saying - that “everyone is someone’s Jew” - precisely sums up the human propensity for social hierarchy and prejudice. The issue of why Jews got the dubious honor of being central to the saying is a long, complicated story. For medievalist Professor Sara Lipton, however, the question that has occupied much of her work is how representations of Jews in medieval art have made that central position possible. In both of her books, Images of Intolerance: The Representation of Jews and Judaism in the Bible moralisée (University of California Press, 1999) and Dark Mirror: The Medieval Origins of Anti-Jewish Iconography (Henry Holt / Metropolitan Books, 2014), Lipton examines medieval texts to track how there came to be a set image of this foreign entity, “a Jew,” and then how that image was used to further propagandize during the Medieval age. In the days before widespread literacy, information was disseminated through images. Lipton’s work traces how the image of the Jew evolved from pre-12th century Synagoga, a blindfolded female figure who represented the fact that Jews were blind to the word of Jesus, to a recognizable iconography that is still used today, but was being developed and refined during the Middle Ages. “For pretty much the whole first half of the Middle Ages, you could not tell a Jewish person visually by looking at one in Medieval Christian art. They didn’t have any identifying physiognomic features, facial features, clothing of any kind,” Lipton notes in an interview with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. That began to change around the mid-thirteenth century. Tracking how the refinements in the iconography were tied to changes that were happening in the economic and social realities of the day, Lipton shows how by the 13th century the Church’s emphasis on Jewish involvement with Christ’s crucifixion causes a growing hostility toward Jews that coincides with an identifiable and unflattering depiction of “the Jew” in medieval art. Her work extends backwards, by several hundred years, the notion that Jewish caricature began in the 1500s, showing instead that the roots of this iconography are deeply buried in the social, religious and economic soil of earlier centuries. The child of a museum curator, Lipton has combined her childhood interest in art with her love of history, and the Medieval period, in particular. She is a Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Both the Medieval Academy of America and the Association for Jewish Studies have recognized her excellence with their John Nicholas Brown Prize for Best First Book and Jordan Schnitzer Book Award, respectively. Professor Lipton will be giving a presentation on images of Jews in medieval Christian art, based on her award-winning book Dark Mirror: The Medieval Origins of Anti-Jewish Iconography at Temple Covenant of Peace in Easton on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 pm. This event is free!

Religious School has been going well. Many students attended and participated in High Holy Day services. A huge Thank You goes out to the Confirmation students who read from the Torah on Yom Kippur - as Cantor Jill pointed out, they had about 10 days to learn their portions, and for B’nei Mitzvah, they study for 10 months! Also in October, the TCP ground was broken for the TCP community garden. We are looking for some adults who would like to contribute to the digging of the garden, so if you are interested, please contact the Religious School at [email protected] for more information regarding our next venture! We had our first guest presenter for an enrichment this month. Patti Price met with a group of students to teach about the History of Jewish Life in Easton. This enrichment included a bus tour of Easton! If you are interested in sharing something with our children, please contact the Religious School at the above email address. Students also had fun creating decorations and decorating the Sukkah. November will bring a new set of Enrichments, Family Service led by the B’nei Mitzvah class, and much more learning! Gift Cards - Giant and Shop Rite

As of the this week, we have sold over $6,000 in gift cards for the Giant and Shop Rite supermarkets, allowing TCP to realize $1050 in profits! Additional orders are being placed as we deplete our inventory. Please support TCP - gift cards are an easy and convenient way to allow TCP to raise funds. Gift cards never expire, and are available in the Temple office. For large amounts, we will deliver locally to your home or office. Please let Joanne know what you will need.

Donation Opportunities: TCP offers 3 different donation gift cards. Our

standard card for which the donor determines the amount; a lovely, original art card designed specifically for TCP on watercolor stock for $18.00 and a beautiful certificate for donations of $54.00 and above.

In keeping with the wonderful custom of

breaking bread together, you may sponsor an Oneg Shabbat in honor of a birthday, anniversary or a Yahrtzeit for $98.

For those who wish, one may purchase (for

$750) a Yahrtzeit plaque. This metallic plaque is a permanent remembrance of your loved one at TCP. All the Yahrzeits plaques are in our beautiful sanctuary, and each week, the lights of the plaques corresponding to the Yahrzeits for that week are illuminated. If you wish to purchase a plaque for a loved one who has passed, please contact the office. We have a beautiful "tree of life" in the Sanctuary Lobby for which one can buy a leaf for $180 and memorialize your loved one. If you are interested in such, please contact the office at 610 253 2031.

If you could leave a lasting impression on the future of Temple Covenant of Peace with a

simple gift today, would you do it? By incorporating TCP into your estate plans, you could make a difference for the future of TCP. Naming TCP in your Will or Trust is an easy way to make a difference. Bequests do not affect your current cash flow or assets and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are leaving a legacy which will outlast you. Other ways of giving include making TCP the beneficiary of Retirement Plan Assets or Charitable Gift Annuities. For more information on including Temple Covenant of Peace in your estate plans, please contact:

Jim Mueth at [email protected].
