THE SHEPHERD’S VOICE
Dear Parishioners, This weekend, as we celebrate the opening of “Catholic Schools Week”, our gospel reading points out how Jesus’ teaching was unlike anything people had experienced, because he spoke with an inner authority. Rabbis taught by quoting the scrip-tures and the teachings of famous rabbis; Jesus spoke as if he knew the mind of God. He did! As the Son of God his intimacy with his Father was so deep that when he spoke the people heard God speaking to them, they heard the Truth. And when Jesus acted it was God at work among them. As preachers, as teachers in a Catholic school or a program of faith formation, as parents we can do nothing better than to repeat Jesus’ in-structions, because it is Truth, it is Wisdom. And it is certainly wise for us to absorb that teaching, to take it to heart, and to live by it. And there you have the primary task of Catholic schools: to teach all disciplines in the greater context of what Jesus Christ has revealed to us as the truth. In forming our youth in the faith we want them to LEARN and to understand what Jesus taught, to know they are called to SERVE and to LEAD others by their service. That will gain them true SUCCESS, success in the eyes of God.

BLESSING OF THROATS Saturday, February 3rd is the Feast Day of St. Blaise; the patron saint of throats. Saint Blaise is believed to (have begun) as a heal-er then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles.
