Dear Friends,
As we enter the Church’s Jubilee “Year of Mercy,” I thought it
might be helpful to remind ourselves of some particular expressions
of mercy catalogued in the Catechism to help guide us in charity.
The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we
help our neighbors with their material and physical needs.
*feed the hungry
*give drink to the thirsty
*clothe the naked
*shelter the homeless
*visit the sick
*visit the imprisoned
*bury the dead
The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion, as listed
below, by which we help our neighbors with their emotional and
spiritual needs.
*counsel the doubtful
*instruct the ignorant
*admonish sinners
*comfort the afflicted
*forgive offenses
*bear wrongs patiently
*pray for the living and the dead
In the coming months we will reprint part or all of this list in the
bulletin on a regular basis, and include some commentary to help us
reflect upon how we can channel our energies into these important
manifestations of Christ’s presence in the world.
Speaking of Christ’s presence in the world…the day when we
celebrate his not-so-grand entrance is upon us! I am looking forward
to my first Christmas at Ascension when our community comes
together at the various Masses to welcome anew God-with-us!
May your week reflect the encounter with Christ
we experienced at Mass today!

today’s readings:
First Reading — Micah 5:1-4a;

Second Reading — Hebrews 10:5-10;
Gospel — Luke 1:39-45
Jubilee Year of Mercy In proclaiming the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Pope
Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year
be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to
every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of
mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign
that the Kingdom of God is already present in our
midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation
of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such
an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not
to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed
mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of
herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain,
to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in
assistance rendered to her older relative. Since
baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way,
bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was,
such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of
loving service to others in mercy should especially
mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Ushers and Volunteers
Needed for Christmas Masses
As you know, the church can become quite full
at the Christmas Masses, particularly at our 4:00
p.m. Christmas Eve celebration. We are looking
for volunteers to help our Ushers with the Offering
collection and “directing traffic” for
Communion. If you are interested, please sign up
for one (or more!) of the Masses on the sign-up
sheets located in the Ushers Room near the East
Avenue entrance. To our current Ushers, please
make sure you also sign up to let us know which
Mass you will be attending. Many thanks in
advance!
“Reserving Seats”
at Christmas Mass
I am told that it has been our experience that a
number of people show up early for Christmas
Mass and "reserve" up to entire pews with coats,
scarves, etc. for other family members who plan to
attend. While we understand that family members
want to sit together on this special occasion and
not everyone can arrive early or at the same time,
we also always have some elderly parishioners,
women with small children, etc. who end up
standing in the back of the church. The policy that
has evolved over the years is that no one may
continue to reserve seats after 10 minutes before
the start of Mass. Someone who is in church early
and would like to sit down should not be prevented
from doing so because of empty “reserved” spaces.
I think this makes a lot of sense and want to ask
that people abide by it,
understanding that
ushers are trying to seat
as many people in need
as possible.
Fr. Hurlbert

Pope Francis’
Prayer for the
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be
merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew
from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness
only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us,
the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all
by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also
be clothed in weakness in order that they may
feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel
sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us
with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy
may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm,
may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of
Mary, Mother of Mercy,
you who live and reign with the Father
and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

H.O.M.E. Team News
What happened at the Paris Climate Summit? An
agreement was reached with 195 countries working
together, so that is significant. Yet, the goal of
reducing carbon/greenhouse emissions to stay
under 1.5o C (2.7o F) warming was not achieved, and
there are other significant missing issues.
The treaty ratification process won’t begin until
April. More prayer, actions and mercy are
needed. See 350.org for details.
What changes can your family make to lower
your carbon use? Stay tuned for some Ascension's
green HOME team initiatives in the new year
including the ‘Cool Carbon Contest’ with prizes.
This is the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis
in Laudato Si' asks us to be merciful to others and to
the planet's resources. So this Christmas season,
when you buy gifts and entertain, please find new
ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Try to avoid gifts
with a large carbon footprint (those manufactured
overseas, with lots of plastic and plastic packaging)
and made by people in sweat shops. Entertain with
some whole, fresh foods grown locally. Buy
products made in the USA. Make some homemade
gifts with lots of heart and soul to bring back the true
spirit of the season.
Let your faith support even one new green
action or tradition in your family, and have some
fun in the process.

NO MSing Around!
Carnival Grocery (the old Pan’s on Oak Park Ave) has agreed to partner through their Shop for Charity Program
with the Lirong Medical Foundation to help Ascension parishioner Nathan Kucera cover the cost of his health care.
Nathan is a former member of the Ascension choir and participant in Teen Takeover and Youth Ministry service trips.
He is 27 years old and was stricken with a very aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, rendering him unable to walk.
He recently underwent a successful stem cell transplant at Northwestern University, and is now doing better and
walking without assistance. However, his health insurance company refuses to cover the cost of his stem cell
treatment and Nathan was forced to take out a $125,000 loan.
Now through January 31, 2016, Carnival grocery will contribute 10% of its sales to the Lirong Foundation when
the cause “No MSing Around” is mentioned. Please help us spread the word and take this bulletin notice with you as a
reminder when you shop at Carnival during this busy holiday season — and just say at the checkout counter that you
are supporting “No MSing Around.” In addition, Carnival is offering a match grant of $2000 if we are successful in
raising $2000. That’s $4000 towards helping to reduce Nathan’s health care loan!
Let’s not MS around! For more information, go to http://www.LirongMF.org or contact Linda Kucera at
[email protected] or 708-404-2274.
