Rault Biscuit FactoryThe manioc (cassava) tuber (from south America) and its biscuit played an important part in Mauritian history a during World War 1, the population was almost on starvation since many ships bringing food to Mauritius were sunk along the way. The manioc and the biscuits became almost the sole alimentation. At those times, the factory was employing up to 100 persons excluding those planting and taking them to the factory.

The level of hustling can be tiresome, however and you’ll have to bargain hard, start by slashing the price quoted.

Domaine Les PaillesTen minutes south of port Louis lays the nature park of Domaine Les pailles, stretching over 3,000 acres at the foot of the Moka mountain range. You can choose between riding in a horse-drawn carriage or in a train. The gardens also feature a replica of an ancient sugar mill, an “alambic”- an apparatus formerly used in distilling rum, a spice garden and a natural spring.

Cap Malheureuxcap Malheureux is a small fishing village located on the furthest north tip of Mauritius. it offers a magnificent view of some of the small islands off the coast. Among others, ile plate, famous for its lits lighthouse; ile ronde, inhabited only by palm trees, harmless boas and indigenous lizards; ile aux serpents, which, despite its name, is not infested with snakes; and coin de mire, an enormous rock of historical importance, since it was from there that the english secretly embarked on 2 september, 1810 to win over the island from the French.
