Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes May 23, 2021 - Pentecost Sunday
“And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are
retained.” – John 20:22-23
Come Holy Spirit!
This weekend the church celebrates the great feast of Pentecost. We celebrate this feast fifty days after Easter, hence the name. We read the account in the Acts of the Apostles of how the Holy Spirit came to rest on the disciples and empowered them to go forth and spread the Good News. We read of tongues of fire resting upon the disciples, there being a noise like a strong wind, and people hearing their words in their native tongues.
In today’s Gospel from St. John, Jesus says that He would send an advocate, or paraclete, to watch and guide His disciples. This became a reality for them and remains with us to this day. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Some refer to this day as the birthday of the Church. Some churches celebrate by having baptisms and confirmations on this day. Parishes might release doves or pigeons symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Many parishioners dress in red in unity with the fire of the Spirit.
Through the Holy Spirit the apostles were empowered and had the spiritual tools to go out to all nations proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that Peter baptized 3000 people that day. This tradition continues 2000 years later. Despite the many challenges and hardships Christians have faced over the centuries, the Church continues to grow. Through their baptism, all Christians are called by Christ to proclaim Jesus Christ as savior and invite others into a relationship with Him.
In our diocese, our mission and vision is to Courageously Live the Gospel. Our radio station, Spirit FM, encourages you to Live with Spirit. It’s not always easy, but if we open our heart to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in all we say and do, those fears will turn to courageous boldness. Have the courage to open your heart to the Holy Spirit today.

Reflexión del Evangelio por el Obispo Parkes 23 de mayo de 2021 - Domingo de Pentecostés
Después de decir esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo. A los que les perdonen los pecados, les quedarán perdonados; y a los que no se los perdonen, les quedarán sin perdonar”. – Juan 20, 22-23
¡Ven, Espíritu Santo! Este fin de semana la Iglesia celebra la gran fiesta de Pentecostés. Celebramos esta fiesta cincuenta días después de la Pascua, de ahí su nombre. Leemos en los Hechos de los Apóstoles el relato de cómo el Espíritu Santo se posó sobre los discípulos y les dio el poder de salir a difundir la buena nueva. Y también que las lenguas de fuego se posaron sobre los discípulos, que hubo un ruido como de un viento fuerte y que la gente escuchó sus palabras en sus lenguas maternas.
En el Evangelio de san Juan para el día de hoy, Jesús dice que enviaría un abogado, o consolador, para cuidar y guiar a sus discípulos. Esto se convirtió en una realidad para ellos y ese mismo don permanece aún con nosotros. Es el don del Espíritu Santo. Algunos se refieren a este día como el nacimiento de la Iglesia. Algunas iglesias lo celebran con bautismos y confirmaciones en este día. Las parroquias pudieran echar a volar palomas o pichones que simbolizan el Espíritu Santo. Muchos feligreses se visten de rojo como símbolo del fuego del Espíritu.
Por el Espíritu Santo los apóstoles recibieron el poder y los dones espirituales para ir a todas las naciones y proclamar la buena nueva de Jesucristo. La Escritura nos dice que Pedro bautizó a 3,000 personas ese día. Esta tradición continúa después de 2,000 años. A pesar de los muchos retos y dificultades que los cristianos han afrontado a lo largo de los siglos, la Iglesia sigue creciendo. Por el bautismo todo cristiano es llamado por el mismo Jesucristo a proclamarlo y a invitar a otras personas a una relación con él.
En nuestra diócesis, nuestra misión y visión es Vivir Valientemente el Evangelio. Nuestra emisora de radio, Spirit FM, te anima a vivir según el Espíritu. No siempre es fácil, pero si abrimos nuestro corazón para permitir que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe en todo lo que decimos y hacemos, nuestros temores serán remplazados por la valentía. Ten el valor de abrirle tu corazón al Espíritu Santo hoy mismo.
