Money in Swiss banks: India slips to 88th place; UK on top
India has slipped to 88th place in
terms of money parked by its
citizens with Swiss banks, while
the UK remains on the top.
Also, the money officially
held by Indians with banks in Switzerland now accounts
for a meagre 0.04 per cent of the total funds kept by all
foreign clients in the Swiss banking system, as per an
analysis of the latest figures compiled by the SNB (Swiss
National Bank) as on 2016-end.
India was placed at 75th position in 2015 and at 61st in the
year before that, though it used to be among top-50
countries in terms of holdings in Swiss banks till 2007.
The country was ranked highest at 37th place in the year
2004.
India contributes $500,000 to UN Peacebuilding Fund
India has contributed $500,000 to the UN Peacebuilding Fund,
expressing hope that more funding by nations will boost efforts
by the world body to build and sustain peace.
India has been a member of the Peacebuilding
Commission since its inception in December 2005 and has
so far contributed $5 million to the Peacebuilding Fund.
New Israeli flower named after PM Modi
A new fast-growing Israeli flower was named after Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, in a special gesture to mark the first
visit of an Indian premier to the Jewish nation.
Israeli Crysanthumun flower will now be called “MODI”,
officials said.
Modi’s three-day visit to Israel is the first by an Indian
prime minister to the Jewish nation.
Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and Shekel is its currency.
10th Session of the India- Jordan Trade and Economic
Joint Committee (TEJC)
The 10TH India-Jordan Trade and Economic Joint Committee
(TEJC) Meeting was held in New Delhi on 4th and 5th July,
2017 under the co-chairs of Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister
of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry,
Government of India, and H.E Eng. Mr. Yarub Qudah,
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, the Government of the
Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
On this occasion, the two countries emphasized the need
for diversification of bilateral trade and deepening their
engagements for greater cooperation in investment sector.
The two leaders also inked the revised Economic and
Trade Cooperation Agreement between the Government
of the Republic of India, and the Government of the
Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
5th Meeting of BRICS Education Ministers held in Beijing
Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Education was held on 5th July,
2017 at Beijing, China.
The Indian delegation was led by Shri Prakash Javadekar,
Minister of Human Resource Development, India.
Delegation of all the five BRICS countries participated in
the two-day deliberations.

India, Israel to set up $40 mn research fund
India and Israel

agriculture, space, including a $40 million joint fund for

Trilateral Malabar exercise to kick off on July 10
The Malabar naval exercise involving Indian, American and
Japanese navies will kick start on July 10 in the Bay of Bengal,
amid China's growing military assertiveness in the disputed
South China Sea.
A sizeable number of aircraft, naval ships and nuclear
submarines of the navies of the three countries will be part
of the annual exercise.
India and the US have regularly conducted the annual
exercise since 1992.
Italy passes bill to make torture illegal

crime under national law, after years of parliamentary back-
and-forth.
Rome signed the UN Convention Against Torture in 1984
but had never transferred it into national legislation.
India slips to be 4th largest investor into UK
India has slipped by one spot to become the fourth-largest
foreign investor into the UK, according to the official figures
released.
The US remains on the top, investing in 577 projects in the
UK, with China (including Hong Kong) remaining in
second place with 160 projects.
India set up 127 new projects in Britain last year.
However, it lost its position as the third largest investor in
the UK to France which set up 131 projects last year,
according to the data.
India ranks 23rd in Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI)
2017
The second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) has placed India
at a high 23rd position out of 165 nations.
• The Index measures the commitment of nations across
the world to cyber security.
• The GCI was released by the UN telecommunications
agency International Telecommunication Union
(ITU).
• Singapore ranked first in the Index.
Informal BRICS Leaders Meeting in Hamburg
The leaders of the 5 BRICS countries held an informal meeting
on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany.

UNESCO puts city of Hebron on its heritage in danger list
UNESCO has declared the Old City of Hebron an endangered
world heritage site, sparking outrage from Israel in a new spat
at the international body.
• Meeting in Poland, the UN’s cultural arm voted 12 to
three — with six abstentions — to give heritage status
to Hebron’s Old City in the occupied West Bank,
which is home to more than 200,000 Palestinians and
a few hundred Israeli settlers.

Petroleum Minister to represent India at 22nd World
Petroleum Congress

A men-only island in Japan where women are banned has been
declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• The tiny landmass of Okinoshima is permanently

Model United Nations Regional Conference underway at
Kathmandu
A Model United Nations Regional Conference is being held at
Kathmandu. The event is organised by the US Embassy in

The basic aim of the MUN is to provide a platform to

The conference simulate four UN committees–United

USIBC plans to break free from Chamber
The U.S. India Business Council (USIBC), a forum of
companies that seek to promote business cooperation between
the two countries, has decided to delink from the U.S. Chamber
of Commerce and function as an autonomous entity.
The U.S. Chamber houses bilateral councils for several
other countries, but USIBC and the U.S.-China Council
are the most prominent.

India is ranked 116 out of 157 nations on a global index that
assesses the performance of countries towards achieving the
ambitious sustainable development goals (SDGs).
• India is ranked 116th on the index with a score of 58.1,
behind countries such as Nepal, Iran, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and
China. Pakistan is ranked 122.
• Sweden leads the list, followed by Denmark and Finland.

India among 5 countries that faced most terror attacks in
2016
More than half of the terror attacks in the world in 2016 took
place in five countries, including India and Pakistan, a senior
US counter-terror official has said.
The total number of terror attacks in 2016 were lower than
in 2015.
Fifty-five per cent of all attacks took place in Iraq,
Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, and 75
per cent of all deaths due to terrorist attacks took place in
Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
Australia joins International Solar Alliance
Australia became the 35th country to join the International
Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in November 2015 in Paris.
It is co-led by India and France.
The aim was to support developing countries to boost their
solar production capacity.
The solar alliance, whose head office is in India, has grown
stronger in the past two years with more countries joining
the group and signing the agreement.
UN selects Dubai as data hub for MENASA region
The UN has selected Dubai as the data hub for the Middle East
North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region for the city’s
integrated initiatives to mine and manage its data.
The work is already under way to prepare Dubai as the
regional city data hub.
It will also serve as a dedicated platform for city-to-city
learning and ‘solutions transfer’ across metropolitan,
national and global contexts.
India third largest terror target after Iraq and
Afghanistan: US report
India has displaced Pakistan on a list of countries facing terror
attacks in 2016, with higher fatalities and injuries than its
restive neighbour, according to data compiled by the US state
department.
Out of 11,072 terror attacks in 2016 worldwide, India bore
the brunt of 927, 16% more than 2015 (798).
More than half of the terror attacks in India in 2016 took
place in four states – J&K, Chhattisgarh, Manipur and
Jharkhand.
Iraq is on the top of the list.
India 132nd Out of 152 Countries For Commitment to
Reducing Inequality Index
India has been ranked 132 out of 152 countries in an index that
rates countries by their commitment to reducing inequality.
The first report edition of the index, released recently,
showed that OECD countries headed by Sweden ranked
the highest while Nigeria was at the bottom.
The US had the highest level of inequality among
developed countries, though it is the wealthiest country in
history.

CAC adopts Codex norms for three spices
Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) adopted three Codex
standards for black, white and green pepper, cumin and thyme
paving the way for a universal agreement on identifying quality
spices in various countries.
• The Codex Alimentarius or “Food Code” is a
collection of standards, guidelines and codes of
practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius
Commission.
• The Commission, also known as CAC, is the central
part of the joint FAO (Food and Agricultural
Organization of the United Nations)/WHO (World
Health Organisation) Food Standards Programme.
India will need $4.5 trillion by 2040 for infrastructure:
GIH’s Report
As per `Global Infrastructure Outlook’ released by Global
Infrastructure Hub (GIH) India will need investments to the
tune of around USD 4.5 trillion till 2040 to develop
infrastructure to improve economic growth and community
wellbeing.
• Taking sustainable development goals (SDGs) into
account, the country is predicted to need an additional
USD 888 billion by 2030 to provide universal
household access to electricity and water.
• According to report, the total investment needed to
meet the SDGs is greatest in India - a total of USD 1.3
trillion of investment is needed by 2030, more than
China.

GST comes into force after 17 years of debate

National Biopharma Mission launched
The National Biopharma Mission aimed at accelerating

an investment of USD 250 million with USD 125 million
as a loan from World Bank.
It aspires to create an enabling ecosystem to promote
entrepreneurship and indigenous manufacturing in the

Jharkhand CM inaugurates India’s largest fresh water
aquarium
India’s largest fresh water aquarium Ranchi aquarium was
unveiled by CM Raghubar Das for public at the Birsa Munda
Zoological Park about 12 kms from the city.
As many as 58 technically planned tanks have been
installed at the aquarium so as to provide an ambient
environment to 120 species of fishes.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao decided to

Rao also asked the officials to form farmers' associations
at various levels -- from villages to the state -- to organise
the cultivators.
PM Narendra Modi adopts wrestlers’ Village Kakrahia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will adopt Kakrahia, a village
known for its wrestlers and wrestling arenas, under the Sansad
Adarsh Gram Yojana, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi
Adityanath said.
This will be the third village to be adopted by the Prime
Minister in his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi.
In the previous two years, Modi adopted Jayapur and

Protection Force (SRPF) for better protection of the one-

Madhya Pradesh plants record 6.63 crore saplings in 12
hours
The Madhya Pradesh government has claimed a record 6.63
crore saplings were planted on the banks of river Narmada as
part of its river conservation efforts.
The 12-hour plantation drive was undertaken across the
state and may find a place in the Guinness World Records.
The current record of planting maximum saplings in least
time is five crore in 24 hours which is held by Uttar
Pradesh.
Foundation stone of country’s biggest Global Skill Park
laid
Union Minister of State for Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship Rajeev Pratap Rudi and Madhya Pradesh
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have laid the foundation
stone of the country’s biggest Global Skill Park in Bhopal,
Madhya Pradesh.
The park will be constructed at a cost of 645 crore rupees.
Training will be imparted to 1000 students every year by
trainers of international standard.
The park will function on the spirit of ‘With Industry -For
Industry’.

India’s tallest ATC tower to be operational at Delhi airport
by December
The new 101.9-metre air traffic control (ATC) tower at the
Delhi airport, touted to be the country’s tallest, is likely to start
operations by December.
The airport operator has handed over the tower to the
Airports Authority of India (AAI), whose chief said trial
runs will begin soon.
The tower, among the tallest structures in Delhi, will give
a 360-degree view of the airport to the controllers who will
be able to see all the three runways, aprons and taxiways.
AIIB approves USD 329 mn loan to build roads in Gujarat
China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has
approved USD 329 million loan to build access roads to 4,000
villages in Gujarat.
Insufficient road connectivity into these villages limits
their ability to access healthcare services, bring their goods
to market and access transportation for their children to
attend schools, it said.
This project will construct and upgrade district and farm-
to-market roads for the villagers and provide approaches
to educational institutions, schools and hospitals.
Karnataka launches ‘Elevate 100’ scheme for start-ups
The Karnataka government has launched the ‘Elevate 100’
scheme to identify and nurture innovative start-ups.
The aim is to identify 100 most innovative start-ups in the
state to elevate them to the next level of success.
The Elevate scheme is the brainchild of the start-up cell,
Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology
Services (KBITS).
India among 5 countries using wastewater for irrigation
India and four other countries – China, Pakistan, Mexico and
Iran — account for the most cropland in the world irrigated by
dirty wastewater, putting millions of lives at serious health
risks, new research has found.
The global use of untreated wastewater from cities to
irrigate crops downstream is 50 per cent more widespread
than previously thought, according to the study published
in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

India and Bangladesh have decided to construct a bridge over

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had given the
approval to construct the bridge and linking roads.
Chhattisgarh tops list of states in issuance of soil
health cards
Chhattisgarh has topped the list among all the states in the
country for having issued over 43 lakh soil health cards (SHCs)
to farmers in the past two years.
As against the target of providing 38,90,709 SHCs in the
first phase of the scheme between 2015 and 2017 financial
years, as many as 43,37,595 SHCs were issued to farmers
in the state.

Centre launches GST Rates Finder app
The Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley launched a
mobile app “GST Rates Finder” in his chamber in the national
capital which is now available on android platform and will
soon be available on iOS platform as well.
This Mobile app helps users to find rates of GST for
various goods and services.
CBEC has also provided a GST rate finder on its portal to
help the taxpayers know the applicable GST rate on their
supplies of goods and services.
A taxpayer can search for applicable CGST, SGST,
UTGST rate and Compensation Cess on a supply.
Bengaluru to host conference on social justice
A three-day Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar international
conference on social justice will be held in Bengaluru from
July 21 to 23.
Organised by the Karnataka government, Congress Vice
President Rahul Gandhi, human rights advocate and
activist Martin Luther King III, and 83 international, 149
national and 80 state-level speakers will address about
2,000 participants at the conference.

Health ministry, signs MoU with WB
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare signed a memorandum
of understanding (MoU) with Government of West Bengal to
set up a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence in Transfusion
Medicine at Kolkata.
• Government of India has approved this important
initiative with an outlay of approximately Rs.200
Crores towards equipment, manpower and running
costs.
• The move intends to strengthen the blood transfusion
services in the State and the surrounding region.
Odisha to set up international standard sports city
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced to set up the Kalinga
International Sports City in the state capital to organize mega
international events in future.
• "The proposed sports city would make eligible to bid
for most international competitions including
Commonwealth and Asian Games.
• With an aim to provide best of the sports
infrastructures in other parts of the state, CM also
announced to set up four satellite stadiums with world

Gujarat government to take out Narmada Rath Yatra
The Gujarat government has decided to celebrate the
completion of Sardar Sarovar dam work on river Narmada by

programme.
• Gujarat CM launched a website having all the
information related to the entire project, such as
Narmada river basin, Sauni scheme, Sujalam Sufalam
irrigation scheme and canal network.
President launches three digital initiatives in education
sector
President Pranab Mukherjee launched two programmes and
'National Academic Depository' to take education to the
remotest corners of the country with the help of technology.
The programmes Swayam and Swayam Prabha -- for making
education more accessible -- and the depository were
conceived and executed by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development.
• Under Swayam, courses would be offered through
digital classrooms with online study material
available free of cost in videos.
• Swayam Prabha would tap into the potential of Direct
to Home Service wherein a person can install a dish
antenna for about Rs 1,500 and have access to 32
digital educational channels run by the HRD Ministry.

The Indian Railways has launched RailCloud, a virtual server

• Developed by rail PSU RailTel at an estimated cost of
about Rs 53 crore, RailCloud is aimed at optimising
server resources and its management.
• RailCloud technology enables maximising the usage
of available server and storage resulting in
accommodation of bigger data and more applications
within same server space. This makes the system
suitable to meet higher demand.

involved in the process of reviewing the evidence

Delhi government to start online RTI portal
Delhi became the second state to launch e-RTI portal that will
enable citizens to file online Right to Information (RTI).
• The Central government had launched its own online
RTI application portal in 2013, which allowed users
to file queries, pay application fee and submit requests
for appeal.

their own online application portals. Maharashtra had
followed suit in 2015 with its own RTI portal.
Revamped NHB RESIDEX launched

Naidu released the new version of NHB RESIDEX on the
occasion of the National Housing Bank entering its 30th year.
• This component of RESIDEX, called Housing Price,
Prices is based on actual market information.
• The other component of RESIDEX called as Prices
based on the information furnished by banks and other
lending agencies showed that prices have increased in
27 of the 50 cities surveyed.
Points to Remember:-
• RESIDEX, the country’s first official housing price
index (HPI) was launched in 2007 covering 26 cities
and was published till March, 2015 on a quarterly
basis.
• Base year for the new RESIDEX has been moved
from 2007 to 2012-13.

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of the
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), South Asia
Regional Center (ISARC) at campus of National Seed
Research and Training Center (NSRTC) in Varanasi.
• This will include a modern and sophisticated
laboratory with capacity to determine quality and
status of heavy metals in grain and straw.
• The Centre will help in utilizing the rich biodiversity
of India to develop special rice varieties and achieve
higher per hectare yields and improved nutritional
contents.

connectivity among BBIN nations.
• The project corridor is also a part of the Asian
Highway No. 01 (AH01) and acts as India's Gateway
to the East.
India to host 8th international Theatre Olympics in 2018
Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (Independent charge) for
Culture and Tourism has announced that 8th edition of the
greatest carnival of Theatre in the World will take place in
India for the first time ever from February 17 – April 08,
2018 simultaneously in various cities across the country.
• The Theatre Olympics, being held in India for the first
time, is being organised by National School of Drama,
under the aegis of Ministry of Culture.

Delphi, Greece, as the first international theatre
festival.
• In 2016 the 7th Theatre Olympics were held in

National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination in India
(2017-22)
Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare
launched the National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination
(2017-22) at a function.
• The Strategic Plan gives year wise elimination targets
in various parts of the country depending upon the
endemicity of malaria in the next 5 years.
• Highlighting the salient features of the NSP, Shri
Nadda stated that the strategies involve strengthening
malaria surveillance, establishing a mechanism for
early detection and prevention of outbreaks of

use of Long Lasting Impregnated Nets (LLINs),
effective indoor residual spray and augmenting the

Training centre for high-speed rail to come up in Gujarat
The country is set to
get its first high-
speed rail training
centre at
Gandhinagar.
The training centre
will have a sample
track fitted with the overhead electrical systems to enable
testing of bullet trains that will run on the Mumbai-
Ahmedabad route.
While India’s first bullet train is proposed to hit the track
in 2023, the training centre is supposed to start operating
by 2020, said Achal Khare, managing director, National
High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC).
DIPP to set up India’s first TISC in Punjab
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP)
signed an Institutional agreement with the Punjab State
Council of Science and Technology in New Delhi to establish
India’s first Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC)
at Patent Information Centre, Punjab, under the World
Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) TISC program.
The objective of the TISC is to stimulate a dynamic,
vibrant and balanced Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs)
system in India to foster creativity and innovation, thereby
promoting entrepreneurship and enhancing social,
economic and cultural development by establishing a
network of TISCs in India.
The Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) is
designated as the National Focal Point for the TISC
national network.
New Doppler weather radar commissioned
Indigenous Doppler weather radar, capable of predicting with
increased accuracy weather events such as cyclone occurring
in 500-km radius from Kochi, was inaugurated by Union
Minister Harsh Vardhan, at Palluruthy in West Kochi.
The government is also exploring the scope of desalination
of sea water, and various departments will be part of the
mission, which seeks to scale up the activity to make
drinking water available to all.
The S-Band Doppler weather radar in Kochi was made
with support from ISRO and Bharat Electronics.

First DEMU Train
Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu dedicated
to the nation the first 1600 HP DEMU train with Solar Powered
Coaches with a unique facility of Battery Bank.
• The entire electrical need of the coaches for Lighting, Fans
and Information Display System will be met from the Solar
Energy produced from the solar panels fitted on the roofs of
coaches.
• While this train has been manufactured by the Coach
Factory of Indian Railways namely Integral Coach Factory
(ICF), Chennai, its Solar panels and Solar systems have been
developed and fitted by Indian Railways Organisation of
Alternative Fuel (IROAF) Delhi.
• This first rake has been commissioned and based at
Shakurbasti DEMU shed in Delhi of Northern Railway.
• Twenty-four more coaches will be fitted with this system
within the next 6 months.
• The first rake will be put in the commercial service over the
suburban railway system of Delhi division of Northern
Railway.

necessitated by natural calamities to the State.
• This amount is being released in advance for rescue and
relief operations required on account of flash floods.

4.75, 4.74 and 4.73 respectively.
• The survey covers a wide range of parameters like

The National Green Tribunal passed a slew of directions to
rejuvenate River Ganga, declaring as 'No-Development Zone'
an area of 100 metres from the edge of the river between
Haridwar and Unnao and prohibiting dumping of waste within
500 metres from the river.
• A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter
Kumar also declared that an environment compensation of Rs
50,000 will be imposed on anyone who dumps waste in the
river.

Kaushal Kendras and 100 Yoga training centres were
inaugurated on the occasion.
• On the occasion, Ministry of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship (MSDE) announced a national
training Programme to certify GST practitioners
under its flagship scheme of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal
Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). This would facilitate the
country’s transition to the new tax regime seamless
and convenient.

Panel on Ganga cleaning law proposes two new bodies
An official panel, framing a draft law on the cleaning of the
Ganga, has proposed a two- tiered mechanism to replace two
existing bodies which are implementing the Namami Gange
Programme.
• The panel has recommended establishing an
integrated development council (IDC) with the prime
minister as its ex- officio chairperson. The IDC is
proposed to replace the existing National Council for
Ganga, which is also chaired by the PM.
• Besides, it has suggested setting up the National River
Ganga Basin Management Corporation (NRGBMC)
to be headed by the water resources minister. It is
proposed to replace the National Mission for Clean
Ganga (NMCG).
Operation Muskan launched in Odisha

PMVVY is a Pension Scheme announced by the
Government of India exclusively for the senior citizens
aged 60 years and above which is available from 4th May,
2017 to 3rd May, 2018.
The Scheme can be purchased offline as well as online
through Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India which
has been given the sole privilege to operate this Scheme.
Scheme provides an assured return of 8% p.a. payable
monthly (equivalent to 8.30% p.a. effective) for 10 years.
Telangana puts cap on school bag weight
Acting on proposals submitted by the Commissioner and
Director of School Education, the Telangana School Education
Department issued strict guidelines to reduce the weight of
school bags for children in the State.
Schools including aided and un-aided private schools have
to follow guidelines.
The guidelines limit the number and weight of books and
notebooks students bring to the classroom.

The Ministry of Rural Development will launch a new sub-
scheme under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural
Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) which will be named as
“Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana (AGEY)”
• This will provide safe, affordable and community
monitored rural transport services like e-rickshaws, 3 and 4
wheeler motorised transport vehicles to connect remote
villages with key services and amenities including access to
markets, education and health for the overall economic
development of the area.
Odisha CM dedicates longest bridge to nation

India, Bangladesh to establish new waterways using the
Brahmaputra
The Indian and Bangladeshi governments have undertaken an
ambitious project to establish a new waterway between the two
neighbours using the mighty Brahmaputra river, Union
Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
India is prioritising multi-modal connectivity in the
northeastern region, including water connectivity, and
already 16 waterway projects, mostly involving
Bangladesh, have been approved.
India and Bangladesh have a 2,979 km land border and
1,116 km of riverine boundary. They also share 54
common rivers, including the Brahmaputra.
Haryana to bring 'fixed service' for medical students
Students passing out of government medical colleges in
Haryana will now be required to do a fixed period of service in
government hospitals of the Haryana, state Health Minister
Anil Vij said.
Vij has directed officers to formulate a policy to ensure
that medical students doing MBBS or MD degrees from
the state government's medical colleges would have to
serve in government hospitals.

Airport Authority of India signs MoU with Govt. of
Uttarakhand
Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed an MoU with
Government of Uttarakhand and joined hands with
Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA)
to develop the civil aviation sector in the state.
The scope of the MoU is to identify relevant factors
influencing the development of civil aviation
infrastructure in Uttarakhand, assessing commercial
potential of various airports of the state, identifying
technical considerations for airport operations in the state,
evaluating site related technical and engineering
parameters for development of projects, making estimate
of the capital outlay for the future projects and
development of master plan for existing and future civil
aviation infrastructure in the state.
AAI will also assist UCADA in obtaining necessary
clearances for airport operations starting with the
upgraded airport at Pithoragarh and later at Chiniyalisaur.
Government launches ‘SHe-box’ portal for sexual
harassment complaints
The Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt Maneka
Sanjay Gandhi launched an online complaint management
system titled Sexual Harassment electronic–Box (SHe-Box)
for registering complaints related to sexual harassment at
workplace in New Delhi.
The complaint management system has been developed to
ensure the effective implementation of Sexual Harassment
of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and
Redressal) Act (the SH Act), 2013.
This portal is an initiative to provide a platform to women
working or visiting any office of Central Government
(Central Ministries, Departments, Public Sector
Undertakings, Autonomous Bodies and Institutions etc.)
to file complaints related to sexual harassment at
workplace under the SH Act.
Those who had already filed a written complaint with the
concerned Internal Complaint Committee (ICC)
constituted under the SH Act are also eligible to file their
complaint through this portal.
Maharashtra, Rajasthan record highest cases of child
marriage
Latest government data show that Maharashtra tops the list in
child marriage, followed by Rajasthan. 17 districts of
Maharashtra, including Latur, Mumbai and Pune have reported
high instances of child marriage.
In Rajasthan, 13 districts, including Jaipur, Ajmer and
Bhilwara, have reported increasing incidents of child
marriage.
The figures, highlighting the prevalence of child marriage,
were stated by MoS, women and child development,
Krishna Raj in answer to questions posed in Lok Sabha.

national seismological network with 84 stations.
These stations are connected to NCS headquarter

• To overcome this, a Mobile App has been developed

system
Mumbai Metro One announced the launch of India's first
Mobile Ticketing System 'OnGo' which will help commuters
pass the AFC gates using their mobile phones.
• The 'OnGo' will be particularly convenient for those
commuters wanting to book their journey through
tokens or passes at their own convenience even from
outside the Metro stations and avoid queues before
ticketing windows.
Madras HC makes Vande Mataram mandatory in TN's

The Madras High Court ruled that 'Vande Mataram' must be
sung in schools, educational institutes and government offices.
• Justice Muralidharan said that in the event, if any

Delhi Metro has become the only completely 'green' Metro
system in the world for adhering to green building norms for
its residential colonies
• The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had
earlier received the green certificates for its Phase-3
stations, depots, and sub-stations.
• DMRC is now generating 20 megawatts (MW) of
solar power, after adding new solar power facilities
that produce 2.6 MW across the Metro network.
• The DMRC mentioned 'Swachh Chetna - An Eco

Ministry of Health releases Guidelines for FPC
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released
Operational Guidelines for Planning and Implementation of
Family Participatory Care (FPC).
• The guidelines will serve as a guiding document for
those intending to introduce FPC in their facility as an
integral part of facility based newborn care.
• The document also provides details of infrastructure,
training, role of health care providers and steps in the
operationalization of FPC in the newborn care unit.
India among top nations with potential for digital
payments: Digital Evolution Index
India has featured among 60 nations on Digital Evolution Index
2017, exhibiting a high potential in terms of digital payments.
• On the Digital Evolution Index 2017, India has been
categorised under the “break out” segment which
refers to countries that have relatively lower absolute
levels of digital advancement, yet remain poised for
growth and are attractive to investors by virtue of their
potential.
The report outlined that India has been experiencing rapid
strides of progress with an evolving payments landscape,
catalysed by the government’s demonetisation decision.
Interest rates on small savings, PPF to be lowered by 0.1
per cent
The government has announced to reduce the interest rate on
small saving schemes like PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra and Sukanya
Samriddhi by 0.1 per cent for the July-September quarter,.
However, the interest on saving deposits has not been
changed and it remains at 4 per cent annually.
Investments in the public provident fund (PPF) scheme
will fetch lower annual rate of 7.8 per cent.
The Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) investments will yield 7.5
per cent and mature in 115 months.
The one for girl child savings, Sukanya Samriddhi
Account Scheme, will offer 8.3 per cent annually.
The investment on 5-year Senior Citizens Savings Scheme
will yield 8.3 per cent. Interest rate on the senior citizens
scheme is paid quarterly.
Govt reduces Tax Rate on Fertilizers from existing 12% to
5 % under GST

The Minister said that it was decided to reduce the GST

BHEL signs pact with Japanese firm for manufacturing
coaches for metro trains
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has entered into a
technology collaboration agreement with Kawasaki Heavy
Industries Ltd (KHI) of Japan for manufacturing of stainless
steel coaches and bogies for metros.
The agreement covers establishing design, engineering
and manufacturing facilities at BHEL using Japanese
technology.
It will also entitle BHEL for all technology advances and
upgrades.
BHEL supplies electric as well as diesel locomotives,
EMUs, and propulsion systems for Indian Railways.

Maestro debit cards holders will face a card blockage if
they fail to replace it with a more secure EMV chip based
card by the end of this month.

FINO Payments Bank has commenced operations as a
payments bank with effect from June 30, according to the
Reserve Bank of India.

applicants which were issued in-principle approval for
setting up a payments bank.
Besides FINO, the other applicants which have launched

NMCE, Indian Commodity Exchange to merge in 1st
comex merger
National Multi Commodity Exchange (NMCE) will merge
with Indian Commodity Exchange (ICEX), where Reliance
Capital is the largest investor, in an all-stock deal to create the
country's third-largest commodities bourse.
This is the first merger deal in the commodity exchange
space and the merged entity will offer the world's first
diamond futures contract along with a wide range of
contracts, including bullion, oil, rubber and other agri-
commodities.
Reliance Capital is the largest investor in ICEX and will
continue to be the largest shareholder post merger, along
with others.
As per the agreed swap ratio, ICEX shareholders will hold
62.8 per cent stake and NMCE's will hold 37.2 per cent in
ICEX, post merger.
ADB grants $220 mn for better road connectivity in
Rajasthan
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $220 million
loan agreement with India for improving road connectivity,
transport efficiency and safety on state highways of Rajasthan.
The loan is the first tranche of the $500 million Rajasthan
State Highways Investment Programme, approved by the
ADB Board in May this year.
It will also enhance the capacity of the state public works
department in the areas of road asset management, road
safety and project management, it added.
ICICI Bank, Fairfax join venture terminated
ICICI Bank on Tuesday said the joint venture agreement
between it and Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd has been
terminated ahead of the IPO of ICICI Lombard General
Insurance Company.
A Termination Agreement is a customary provision for an
IPO.
The agreement is executed for the protection of the parties
in the event of non-completion of the proposed IPO on or
before a mutually agreed date.
Bank Unions to observe July 19 as ‘Save public sector

The United Forum of Bank Unions has decided to observe July
19, the 48th anniversary of nationalisation of major banks, as
'Save public sector banks' day.

a year and expedite its investments as well as payment of
benefits to its members.
Employers having bank account with these banks can now
deposit PF dues directly in EPFO's account using internet
banking in real time basis instead of going through the
aggregator mode.
Indus OS partners with YES Bank to launch OS-integrated
UPI platform
Indus OS has partnered with YES Bank to launch OS-
integrated UPI (Unified Payment Interface) payment platform
in India.
Users with Indus OS will be able to use this UPI payment
platform on SMS/ messaging, dialler interface, and on
third party apps like WhatsApp.

This means P2P transactions as well as utility payments
can be made via SMS or messaging. The platform is
expected to launch in this quarter.

Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited has joined hands with
Russian Government-owned Vnesheconombank to create a
$200 Mn fund.
The fund aims to facilitate innovation in the field of

Headquartered at Kolkata, the family-run company signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the
development bank last month, as part of the Indian
government’s continued efforts to foster cooperation with
Russia.
Nalco, IDCO to set up Aluminium Park in Odisha
Nalco, in collaboration with Odisha Industrial Infrastructure
Development Corporation (IDCO), is setting up the first of its
kind Aluminium Park in Angul, Odisha.
• Investment to the tune of Rs 180 crore will be made
on infrastructure of the project which is expected to
generate 15,000 jobs.
• Odisha currently contributes about 54 per cent of
India’s total aluminium smelting capacity.

India to import US crude for first time
India, the world's third-largest oil importer, has sealed a first
deal to import crude oil from the US.
• IOC have bought 2 million barrels of crude oil from
North America comprising 1.6 million barrels of US
Mars crude and 400,000 barrels of Western Canadian
Select.
• US Mars is a heavy, high-sulphur grade which will be
processed at IOC's newest refinery at Paradip in
Odisha.
GMR gets Rs. 1,330 cr loan from Axis Bank
GMR Goa International Airports Limited (GGIAL), subsdiary
of GMR Airports has successfully executed a debt facility
arrangement for the development of the greenfield project at
Mopa in north Goa by signing a common loan agreement with
Axis Bank.
• The bank will provide the company with Rs 1330
crore. The Greenfield airport will be developed in
stages and will be scaled up as per traffic growth
demands.
• This airport will be a full service airport catering to
domestic and international passenger besides freight
services.
RBI amends order on bankruptcy action
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has amended its earlier order
asking banks to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against 12

companies which have outstanding loans amounting to over Rs
5,000 crore as on March 2016.
• "The IAC (Internal Advisory Committee) noted that
under the recommended criterion, 12 accounts
totaling about 25 per cent of the current gross NPAs
of the banking system would qualify for immediate
reference under IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy
Code, 2016),”.
SEBI amends guidelines for eligible foreign investors
Markets regulator SEBI amended the guidelines for eligible
foreign investors looking to operate at the International
Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
• In case of participation of an EFI, not registered with
SEBI as an FPI, but desirous of operating in IFSC, a
trading member of the recognised stock exchange in
IFSC may carry out the due diligence on its own or it
may rely upon the due diligence carried out by a bank,
which is permitted by RBI to operate in IFSC, during
the account opening process of an EFI.
RuPay to tap renew deals with Visa, Mastercard
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is looking
at increased uptake of its RuPay debit cards among premium
customers, as deals signed between banks and its global
competitors Visa and Mastercard expire over the next few
years.
• Though RuPay controls 42 per cent of the Indian debit
card market, the share of its cards is only 16 per cent
of total Point of Sale (PoS) and e-commerce
transactions.
• This is largely due to the fact that the majority of
RuPay cards — around 220 million— are held by
benefactors of the Jan Dhan Yojana scheme.
Axis Bank ties up with IIC
Axis Bank has entered into collaboration with Inter-American
Investment Corporation (IIC) to facilitate trade with Latin
America and the Caribbean.
• The private sector bank, in a statement, said it is the
first Indian bank to participate in the Trade Finance
Facilitation Programme as a confirming bank. IIC, a
member of the Inter-American Development Bank
Group, is a multilateral development bank committed
to supporting the private sector in Latin America and
the Caribbean.

SBI waives charge on IMPS fund transfer of up to Rs 1,000
Country's largest bank SBI has
waived charges for fund transfer
of up to Rs 1,000 through its IMPS
(Immediate Payment Service) to
promote small transactions.
State Bank of India had been charging Rs 5 along with the
applicable service tax for IMPS fund transfer of up to Rs
1,000.
IMPS is an instant interbank electronic fund transfer
service through mobile phones as well as internet banking.
For IMPS, charge will be Rs 5 along GST for fund transfer
in the range of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The charge will go
up to Rs 15 for transactions of Rs 1-2 lakh.
GST at the rate of 18 per cent is applicable on all financial
transactions.
Yes Bank gets $150 mn from OPIC to fund SME lending
Private sector Yes Bank has received $ 150 million funding
from the US government and Wells Fargo to increase lending
to support women entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized
enterprises in India.
• This is the third round of funding to the bank as part of
arrangement with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation
(OPIC) i.e. the US government development finance institution
and Wells Fargo.
• Under the agreement, OPIC will provide $ 75 million in
financing and up to $ 75 million in syndicated financing jointly
arranged by Wells Fargo Bank to Yes Bank, a statement said.

• As part of the IFM, the EU Delegation to India and the
Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry
of Commerce & Industry, agreed to hold regular high level
meetings to assess and facilitate "ease of doing business" for
EU investors in India.

Google has been ranked as the most influential brand in the
country while Patanjali Ayurveda and Reliance Jio figure in the

RBI has set up an Enforcement Department (EFD)

Cabinet approves selling 51% stake in HPCL to ONGC
The Cabinet has given an in-principle approval to sell the
government’s entire 51.11 per cent stake in Hindustan
Petroleum Corp Ltd to Oil and Natural Gas Corp in a bid to
create a state-run integrated oil major that can compete with
private and foreign players.
ONGC chairman Dinesh Sarraf said the shareholders of
both companies would gain from the deal.
The combined market value of ONGC and HPCL would
be $42 billion.

ADB cuts India inflation outlook to 4% in 2017-18
India’s inflation is likely to average 4% in 2017-18, sharply
lower than the estimate made at the beginning of the financial
year of 5.2%, Asian Development Bank (ADB) said in its
outlook supplement.
ADB also said that India is expected to achieve its earlier
April forecasts of 7.4% growth in 2017-18 and 7.6% in
2018-19, primarily due to strong consumption.

Bill Payment System (BBPS).
• There is a specific direction from RBI to operate the
Central Unit as a Strategic Business Unit of NPCI.
Nearly 45 crore bills comprising electricity, telecom,
DTH, water and gas are permitted under BBPS.

Units (BBPOU) certified by NPCI now stands at 24.

NITI Aayog forms four task forces, seeks road map to
reduce pollution
NITI Aayog, the government’s policy think-tank, has set up
four task forces to prepare a roadmap for reducing pollution
levels in the country.
• The task forces on transport, biofuels, industries and air will
be headed by NITI Aayog’s CEO, Amitabh Kant, and will
include officials of the ministries of transport, environment and
petroleum, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and
the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
• The task forces will use the report prepared by Indian
Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 2015 as the base to kick
start assessment of the pollution problem in the national
capital.

Mr. Kovind will be the second Dalit President of India

person from the BJP to hold the office of President since

the dope net after testing positive for a banned stimulant, a

Nar Bahadur Bhandari, one of the longest-serving chief
ministers of Sikkim, died on Sunday.
• He became the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the first

in 1984 and 1989 on a Sikkim Sangram Parishad
ticket. The founder of the SSP, Mr. Bhandari
remained its President till his death.
