CHAPTER IV
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
As already mentioned in the first chapter, this study intended to provide a
pattern of how the teaching of English, appropriate in studying verb-ing technique
using a combination style of writing mind mapping and association methods. In
addition, this study was to determine how deep the students can master the lessons
verb-ing especially in learning gerund by using patterns of learning that is applied
by the researcher. To complement all this, researcher has gained very significant
results in the development of the students in grasping the lessons learned as an
object of research, although researcher has only done one cycle in this study,
researcher has found many changes and improvements in students as a form of
self-improvement in value and of their learning. In the cycle given by the
researcher, there are three sessions that have been conducted to see the
development of treatments that have been given in which the treatment was given
in the form of post-test.
In this case, researchers collected two kinds of data: quantitative data and
qualitative data. Quantitative data are collected based on the results already
obtained from post-test results of students from each session in the first cycle. As
for the qualitative data obtained based on the questionnaire given to students as a
form of comparison between the patterns previously learned by studying the
pattern given by the researchers at the end of the first session. All Components are
mentioned in this chapter as a form of discovery and discussion.

4.1 Overview
As described previously, the main purpose of this study was to determine
whether the combination of mind mapping techniques and associations are able to
enhance students' skills in studying the gerund or not. This is an important
concern for further action on student progress in learning, so that researchers can
determine the level of change and improvement in student learning, and success
and effectiveness of treatment formula given by researchers. Having observed
from the findings, researcher could say that the students ability in learning verb-
ing was really improved through combining mind mapping and association
method. So the researcher concluded that the technique of teaching that was given
is effective in teaching verb-ing forms. The researcher was presented in three
stages those were discussion of the initial reflection (pre-test), cycle I, and Cycle
II.
4.1.1 The Result of Pre-Test
The pre-test was conducted on Thursday, January 5th 2012 to the eleventh
grade students of SMAN 3 Denpasar. The result of pre-test was taken in order to
know the students prior knowledge of learning verb-ing before the action was
held. The mean scores on pre-test was 4. The average score of the correct answer
made by students was 40, it means that the percentage of the correct answer made
by students was 40%. This score was low in term of level mastery. The students
had low ability in mastering verb-ing forms. For further information about the
result of the pre-test, the following table should be referred to:

4.1.1.1 Reflection
The researcher tried to obtain the exact data about the students weakness
in learning verb-ing forms and know the students ability in mastering verb-ing
forms.
Based on the result of pre-test, there were some possible factors that made
the students obtained low scores. First of all, the students were not well prepared
for having a test since the researcher did not inform the students of eleventh grade
previously that they were going to have a test. As the result, most of the students
seemed not ready to answer the test. Second, the students didnt know well about
how to differ gerund and participle deeply, so this is the main case that the
researcher wanted to give as the solution in mastering verb-ing forms.
4.1.2 Cycle I
4.1.2.1 Planning
Planning the materials that wanted to give before the action was
conducted, the researcher made some preparation, namely:
a. Selecting material to be used in the class
b. Preparing teaching learning scenario
c. Considering the time allocation given to the subject
d. Preparing the instrument needed in doing the observation
e. Making the post-test

Those activities were carried out on Thursday and Saturday, from January
5th to 14th 2012 that was the time for doing the first and second meeting of cycle,
so in a month the researcher could finish the research. The researcher planned all
the things carefully and well in order to conduct the class. The action included
some activities, namely: pre-activity, whilst-activity, post-activity. Those actions
had been well done in the first and second meeting.
4.1.2.3 The Results of the Observation
The research observed classroom situation during the action conducted.
The researcher tried observing the students attitude toward the teaching learning
process and finding out the problems faced by students during the action. The
observation sheet was developed in the form of teachers diary which is consisted
of three phases, namely: pre-activity, whilst-activity, post-activity. Examining the
result of the post-test, the researcher wanted to know the weakness of the
technique and method that were used. For detailed information about the students
achievements are presented as follow:

The result of the test in the first cycle showed that there was an
improvement made by the students. It can be seen from the results of the test
where the average score of students mastery on the last test conducted on the first
cycle was 67,1. The correct answer made by students was 6,71, it means that the
percentage of the correct answer was 67,1%.
4.1.2.4 Reflection
After the researchers had analyzed the findings in the first cycle, it was
found that the increase in student mastery of verb-ing forms had been realized,
and had earned a good improvement, although there were still many deficiencies.
Researchers had been able to make improvements, both in motivation and
improvement materials that had been given.
From the overall results had been made in the first cycle, the researcher
was not still satisfied so that made researchers want to further enhance students'
ability to learn the verb-ing. This was done because the researchers had observed
there were many students who had not developed fully in this matter, so the
success of the techniques and methods were given apparent in this study, the

researchers decided to create a second cycle to the desired success could be
achieved by researchers in this study.
4.1.3 Cycle II
4.1.3.1 Planning
Based on the reflection done in the first cycle, the researcher had a new
plan to apply a different action in second cycle. Like the planning in the first
cycle, the preparation would be conducted as follows:
a. Selecting material to be used in the class
b. Preparing teaching learning scenario
c. Considering the time allocation given to the subject
d. Preparing the instrument needed in doing the observation
e. Making the post-test

3. Giving warming up / brainstorming
b. Whilst-activities

6. Giving the individual task for finding the individual improvement
score considered as the post-test of cycle II.
c. Post-activities
1. Giving a short motivation
2. Giving questionnaire
3. Ending the class
In action that was divided into three session. The reader can see each session by
following as:
A. Session 1
The first meeting of second cycle was conducted on Thursday, January
19th 2012. Before conducting this session, the researcher firstly made some
preparation.
As usual, researcher entered into the classroom and gave a warm greeting
to the students continued to read out and then brainstormed. After giving the
brainstorming and it appeared that the students were ready to learn, the researcher
conditioning the class to learn by giving special emphasis and attention in learning
in the classroom. Researchers began to pay special attention to students who were
considered to have a low value. Learning pattern was made as easy as possible to
keep the attention focused and not boring, researcher also did a little joke as a
break for a moment before giving a post-test at the first session on the second

cycle. After giving the main material in the first session, the researchers then
provided post-test as a material for the evaluation to the next session. Researcher
asked students to discuss a little about how to learn their weaknesses, and provide
solutions and motivation. The activities were expected to be able to create a great
interaction that can trigger the desire to learn of students.
B. Session 2
At the second meeting on Thursday, 26th January 2012, the researchers re-
doing the same activity as had been done at the beginning of the session in the
second cycle. The only difference is the provision of brainstorming, the
researchers asked students to discuss for a moment about what had passed. Then
directing them to the verb-ing lessons learned by reminding them how the use of
notes using mind mapping techniques.
The provision of post-test was still being done at the end of the lesson
before the lesson was over. Of course, by providing the opportunity for students to
rest their minds for a moment with a story or a bit of motivation stories,
researchers found that the closeness between the researcher with the students were
very well established, this could all be seen from their enthusiasm in learning and
answering questions properly.
C. Session
The third session was the last session in the second cycle. That was
conducted on Saturday, January 28th 2012. In this last session, the researchers
totally focused on issue that was known by researchers in the observations that
