THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS The Lenten cycle brings us to this “mixed” Sun-
day of palm branches and painful suffering. Our lit-
urgy opens by recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry along
the main road into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to
the back streets of betrayal and humiliation, the court-
yards of torture and abandonment, the hill of execu-
tion.
Isaiah’s strange and gripping “Song of the Servant
of God” was to become the song of Jesus. It is the
song of one who strides forward consistently in the
face of criticism, even scorn: “I have not rebelled, have not turned back.” It is to become our song, as
faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
How are we to react when we hear the account
of the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that
our attitude must be Christ’s, who “emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave.” We pray that we may ab-
sorb the attitude of Christ, and face life squarely in itstriumph and its pain. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY LAND COLLECTION
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONMost Christians today receive a bunch of palm
fronds, olive branches, pussy willow, or forsythia (arelative of the olive) to carry in procession and to bear home in blessing. Some even offer sprigs of
palm or other branches as a gesture of peace to thosethey have offended. The desire is to make a cleansweep of your spiritual house before the Easterfeast.
Accepting the branch is a token of the bearer’swillingness to journey with the Church through agrateful remembrance of Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and life-giving resurrection. Traditionally, the plants associated with today’s feast are planted incemeteries as a sign of Christ’s victory over deathand the promise of new life.
The joy of this day’s opening procession soongives way to a solemn reading of the Passion, thisyear according to Matthew. The ritual is meant notonly to strengthen us to hear this account, but to stirus up to accompany the Church on this journeythrough Holy Week. It also prepares us for nextSunday’s joyful renewal of our baptismal vows. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
