Wiley Cash"A Land More Kind than Home"

In the quiet, tight-knit community of Marshall in Madison County, only the most devout and 'God-fearing' congregants know for certain what goes on in Pastor Carson Chambliss' church from up the river. Rumors of the Pentecost and religious zealotry abound among the more common folk of this sleepy town. When 79-year-old Molly Jameson-an ardent follower of Chambliss' soul-saving methods-ends up face-down in her tomato garden with a blackened snakebite on her hand in 1975, only a very few of the less fearful residents begin to suspect something more than hymn-singing may be going on behind the papered-over windows of Pastor Chambliss' sanctuary.

More than 10 years later, Jess Hall, an adventurous, precocious boy is growing up in this town with his mother, a devout member of the same church, his father, a non-believer, and his mute older brother. One day the boys return early from catching salamanders by the creek and decide to climb up on the rickety rain barrel beside their house-a stunt their mother has told them time and time again not to do. Stump catches a glimpse of something in the window that he shouldn't see, and the boys are separated from each other. Soon catastrophe strikes, shattering the world as they know it. If Jess has suspected that there is much about the world of adults he doesn't understand, he now knows that that knowledge is also much more dangerous and close to him than ever before.

A North Carolina native, Wiley Cash currently lives with his wife in West Virginia and teaches English and creative writing at Bethany College. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he studied fiction writing under Ernest J. Gaines and spent five long years sweating, celebrating Mardi Gras, and missing the mountains of North Carolina-a place Gaines encouraged him to write about. The title of "A Land More Kind than Home" is taken from the closing lines of Thomas Wolfe's final novel "You Can't Go Home Again". Although Wiley loves the well-known author, he thinks Thomas Wolfe is completely wrong.

Erin Duffy"Bond Girl"

From the moment Alex steps onto elite firm Cromwell Pierce's sales floor (and is nearly decapitated by a football), it becomes crystal clear her childhood dream job couldn't be more different from her present, frenzied reality. Soon Alex finds herself performing unimaginable tasks--like trekking to the Bronx

for $1,000 wheels of parmesan cheese and babysitting a colleague who eats the contents of the vending machine for $28,000.

Despite friends' pleas for her to quit, Alex keeps her eye on the prize, and advances from lowly analyst to slightly-less-lowly associate in record time. Her colleagues stop calling her Girlie and begin calling her Alex; suddenly she has thirty-eight older brothers and one possible boyfriend. And then: The Apocalypse. As her life on "The Street"falls into the depths of intolerable cruelty-both personally and professionally-Alex is forced to choose between accompanying Cromwell Pierce in its descent or kicking off her Jimmy Choos to run for higher ground.

"Bond Girl" is witty, fast-paced, pure fun, with a touch of romance. With the infamous stock market crash of 2008 as a back-drop, readers will be swept into the equally awe-inspiring and appalling world of Wall Street as they root for "Bond Girl" Alex with all of their hearts.

Erin Duffy graduated from Georgetown University in 2000 with a B.A. in English and has spent ten-plus years in fixed income sales on Wall Street. "Bond Girl" is her first novel.

Margot Livesey"The Flight of Gemma Hardy"

Fate has not been kind to Gemma Hardy. Orphaned by the age of ten, neglected by a bitter and cruel aunt, sent to a boarding school where she is both servant and student, young Gemma seems destined for a life of hardship and loneliness. Yet her bright spirit burns strong. Fiercely intelligent, singularly deter-mined, Gemma overcomes each challenge and setback, growing stronger and more certain of her path. Now an independent young woman with dreams of the future, she accepts a position as an au pair on the remote and beautiful Orkney Islands.

But Gemma's biggest trial is about to begin...a journey of passion and betrayal, secrets and lies, redemption and discovery, that will lead her to a life she's never dreamed of.

Set in Scotland and Iceland in the 1950s and '60s, "The Flight of Gemma Hardy"-a captivating homage to Charlotte Bront's "Jane Eyre"-is a sweeping saga that resurrects the timeless themes of the original but is destined to become a classic all its own.

Margot Livesey grew up in a boys' private school in the Scottish Highlands where her father taught, and her mother, Eva, was the school nurse. After taking a B.A. in English and philosophy at the University of York in England she spent most of her twenties working in shops and restaurants and learning to write. Her books include "Learning By Heart", "Homework", "Criminals", "The Missing World", "Eva Moves the Furniture", "Banishing Verona", and "The House on Fortune Street". Livesey has taught at several institutions throughout the United

States and is currently a distinguished writer in residence at Emerson College. She lives with her husband, a painter, in Cambridge, MA, and goes back to London and Scotland whenever she can.

Matthew Pearl"The Technologists"

In Boston, 1868, the Civil War may be over but a new war has begun, one between the past and the present, tradition and technology. On a former marshy wasteland, the daring Massachusetts Institute of Technology is rising, its mission to harness science for the benefit of all and to open the doors of opportunity to everyone of merit. But in Boston Harbor a fiery cataclysm throws commerce into chaos, as ships' instruments spin inexplicably out of control. Soon after, another mysterious catastrophe devastates the heart

of the city. Is it sabotage by scientific means or Nature revolting against man's attempt to control it?

The shocking disasters cast a pall over M.I.T. and provoke assaults from all sides-rival Harvard, labor unions, and a sensationalistic press. With their first graduation and the very survival of their groundbreaking college now in doubt, a band of the Institute's best and brightest students secretly come together to save innocent lives and track down the truth, armed with ingenuity and their unique scientific training.

Studded with suspense and soaked in the rich historical atmosphere for which its author is renowned, "The Technologists" is a dazzling journey into a dangerous world not so very far from our own, as the America we know today begins to shimmer into being.

Matthew Pearl grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School. He has also taught literature and creative writing at Harvard University and Emerson College, and has been a Visiting Lecturer in law and literature at Harvard Law School. Adriana Trigiani"The Shoemaker's Wife"

The majestic and haunting beauty of the Italian Alps is the setting of the first meeting of Enza, a practical beauty, and Ciro, a strapping mountain boy, who meet as teenagers, despite growing up in villages just a few miles apart. At the turn of the last century, when Ciro catches the local priest in a scandal, he is banished from his village and sent to hide in America as an apprentice to a shoemaker in Little Italy. Without explanation, he leaves a bereft Enza behind. Soon, Enza's family faces disaster and she, too, is forced to go to America with her father to secure their future.

Unbeknownst to one another, they both build fledgling lives in America, Ciro masters shoemaking and Enza takes a factory job in Hoboken until fate intervenes and reunites them. History of this Evening's Event

Each spring, the Junior League of Richmond hosts one of its largest fundraising

events, the Book & Author Dinner. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity

for authors to travel to Richmond from all over to promote reading awareness

and to be celebrated for their writing. This event also serves to spotlight the

Junior League of Richmond's efforts in the community while providing much-

needed funds to support those activities. It is a wonderful tradition cherished

by all Junior League members.

You may have attended the event in the past, but did you know that the actual

dinner is the finale of many activities designed to celebrate and promote writing?

Local schools host visits with the authors who speak with students about

books and share experiences that inspired them to write. In addition, authors

speak with local media to promote their books and the event. The authors often

graciously praise the Junior League throughout their visit for the southern

hospitality shown to them, which is not surprising given the spirit of the Junior

League of Richmond and its volunteers who work tirelessly in the Richmond

community and on this wonderful event.

Many Richmonders have fond memories of the Miller & Rhoads department

store, a Richmond institution for decades, and in 1943, Junior League member

Em Bowles Locker Alsop introduced the idea of a "writers-with-your-meals"

to store management. Intrigued because similar events had been quite successful

in larger cities, they agreed to host "Book and Author" luncheons in 1943 and

1944. Following a hiatus due to the war, the Junior League of Richmond and

the Miller & Rhoads department store held the first of many successful Book &

Author Dinners in The Miller & Rhoads Tea Room in 1947.

Miller & Rhoads remained a loyal sponsor and location for 45 years, but with its

closing in 1990, a new location and sponsor were needed. That year, the event

moved to the Richmond Marriott with Retail Merchants Association of Greater

Richmond as the new title sponsor. Again, the room was filled to capacity. In

2004, Verizon took on the role of title sponsor and, as with past sponsors, the

relationships have been enjoyed by all. With a move to the Greater Richmond

Convention Center in 2005, attendance at the Book & Author Dinner continues

to grow and the event continues to thrive, now in its 67th year!
