Lily CartwrightLily began dancing at the age of seven at Canterbury Ballet in Christchurch under the directorship of Taisia Missevich. Lily moved to New York in 2007 after she was accepted to both the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive as a Scholarship student.

After spending a year training in the pre professional division of the Joffrey Ballet School Lily began her career dancing in New York, then San Francisco, London, Singapore, Japan, Prague and Australia. She finished her career dancing with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Lily is an ABT Certified Teacher, who has successfully completed the ABT Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level Three of the ABT National Training Curriculum and is now the Associate Director of Canterbury Ballet.

Cat Densham NZAMD Tap and Jazz (Hons)

Catherine (nee Hancox) began dancing at six and competed in competitions throughout New Zealand. For the PACANZ Young Performer of the Year Awards, she reached the finals for Jazz in 2004, the finals for Tap in 2005 and was placed 2nd in the Song and Dance Award at PACANZ that same year. She has also completed NZAMD Solo in both Tap and Jazz, winning the NZAMD Scholarship Tap Award in 2001 when she was 15.

After completing a degree in Psychology at Otago University in 2006, Catherine moved to Auckland where for over 2 years taught Tap and Jazz at The Dance Studio. Catherine also tutored at Auckland University for their Performing Arts degree.

Currently, Catherine runs her own dance studio, Dunedin Dance Academy, teaching both Tap and Jazz to nearly 100 students, including exams and competition work. She is also mum to two year old, Lucy.

Catherine loves to be entertained on stage, loves to be told a story and enjoys people who push the boundaries, developing dance into the future.

GENERAL FESTIVAL RULES & CONDITIONS Competitors are urged in their own interests to familiarise themselves with the following conditions1. General Reservation: The Northland Performing Arts Competition Society Committee

(“Committee”) reserves the right to apply and interpret all the Rules and the decision of the Committee in any matter shall be final.

2. Opening of Competitions: Competitions for each section will commence on the date stated on the front cover of the Syllabus and will be conducted morning, afternoon and evening according to the programme, which will be issued as soon as possible after entries close.

3. Competitor’s Eligibility: These competitions are for amateurs. ‘Amateur’ shall mean one whose gross income does not exceed $5,000 per annum from the exercise of his or her talents as a performer or teacher, in the particular section in which he or she enters to compete. Prize money won at similar competitions does not affect the status of an amateur. No competitor who is, or has been a regular pupil of the Adjudicator of that section during the two years preceding the start of the competitions will be allowed to compete in that section.

4. Age: Competitors in age restricted classes must be prepared to produce Birth Certificates if requested. Age shall be reckoned as at 1st September of the year of the Festival. Date and year of birth must be shown on Entry Forms in all age restricted classes.

5. Entries:a) Entry forms are available on our website (you can enter online or download an print an entry

form). Entries may be submitted: • Online via the website: www.northlandperformingarts.org.nz. • or emailed to: [email protected] • or posted to Northland Performing Arts Competitions Society, PO Box 8143,

Kensington, WHANGAREI 0145, postmarked on or before the entry closing date. See Entry Fees and related information on page 1 of the Syllabus.b) Fees must be paid at the time of entry and no entry will be recorded which is not

accompanied by fees paid in full. Please check Entry Fees carefully as overpayments less than $5.00 will be taken as a donation and will not be refunded.

c) Any Competitor found entering in other than his/her own name will be disqualified. The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry.

d) No person will be permitted to compete more than once in any one solo class. Duos and Trios: competitors may enter twice, but only once with the same partner(s). Groups of 4 or more must consist of at least 50% different competitors in each entry in the same class. Dance competitors should also refer to the Special Conditions – pages 6 - 7.

6. Minimum Entries: The Society reserves the right to delete any class where minimum number of entries is not obtained, or to amalgamate such classes with others of a similar nature. Entry Fees cannot be refunded unless the class is cancelled by the Society. Allocation of prizes (for combined classes) will be printed in the Programme.

7. Late Entries: Competitors should endeavour to submit entries online, by email or post mail as early as possible before the closing date. Late entries are accepted up to one week after the closing date with payment of a late fee.

8. Own Selections: Competitors in Music and Speech & Drama Sections will not be permitted to give the same item in more than one class at this Festival.

9. Time Limits: Unless otherwise stated the maximum time for any item is FOUR minutes. Competitors exceeding the time limit stated in the Syllabus are liable to deduction of marks or disqualification - at the discretion of the Adjudicator. Dance section see Special Conditions - pages 6 - 7.

10. Championship Points: Championship Points (Music sections only) will be awarded only to bona fide entrants in all classes comprising a Championship. Three entries are required before Championships will be awarded.

11. Aggregate Points: For all Championships (Music sections only), trophies and awards which are decided on aggregate points, the following will apply:

First Place - 5 Points Second Place - 3 Points Third Place - 1 Point When placings are tied, the total of nine points is re-allocated as follows: 1st Place Tie - First Equal: 4 Points each. Third: 1 Point 2nd Place Tie - First: 5 Points. Second Equal: 2 Points each. 3rd Place Tie - First: 5 Points. Second: 3 Points. Third Equal: ½ point each.12. Points for Local (Northland) Trophies: When local trophies are awarded on points, the following

conditions apply: a) Placings gained by non-local competitors are ignored. b) Points are allocated to local competitors according to marks gained. i.e. Highest Local Mark: 5 Points. Second Highest Local Mark: 3 Points.

Third Highest Local Mark: 1 Point13. Resident of Northland: For the purpose of these competitions Residents of Northland shall

include persons normally resident or domiciled within the boundaries of the Northland Regional Council as designated by Local Government New Zealand, together with pupils or teachers of Northland Schools normally resident outside the district. Tertiary students whose immediate families are resident in Northland are eligible.

14. Allocation of Prizes in Tied Placings: When aggregate points result in a tie, the highest aggregate marks of placings gained by the tied competitors will decide the winner. For placings which carry medals or certificates/ribbons, a medal or certificate/ribbon is awarded to each tied competitor. Prize money is divided equally between the tied competitors.

15. Withholding Prizes and Placings: If in the opinion of the Adjudicators, performances do not reach a satisfactory standard, the Adjudicators have the power to withhold, at their discretion, any placing or prize. No trophy or prize will be awarded unless a placing is given by the Adjudicator.

16. Cups and Trophies are the property of the Northland Performing Arts Competitions Society; are held for ten months only and must be returned when requested. They should be in clean condition and in good repair. Engraving is the responsibility of each trophy holder. Please have your repairs and engraving done professionally to ensure that cups are not defaced.

17. Errors: It would be appreciated if any error in the Programme was notified to the Section Convenor or Committee member immediately and before the commencement of the Festival.

18. Withdrawals: Parents or teachers are requested to advise the Section Convenor or Committee member of any withdrawals before the commencement of the Festival. A letter, phone call or email would be appreciated.

19. Adjudicators: Communication with the Adjudicators, by competitors, teachers or other interested parties, prior to or during the competitions is absolutely prohibited and the Committee reserves the right to disqualify a competitor for any breach of this rule.

20. Order of Performance: Competitors’ names will appear in the Programme in the order in which they will compete, but all competitors must be in attendance at the time of the commencement of their class. Those not present when called upon shall, at the discretion of the Section Convenor, forfeit their right to compete in that class.

21. Prompting: No prompting or assistance of any kind may be rendered during a performance, except by the Adjudicator (or Adjudicator’s assistant at the Adjudicator’s direction). Speech & Drama section entries may be prompted in the normal manner.

22. Interference: Any competitor subject to interference in any form should advise the Stage Manager immediately.

23. Stage: No person, other than officials and competitors in the class in progress will be allowed backstage or at the sides of the stage, except with the express permission of the Stage Manager.

24. Protests: Competitors desiring to enter a protest must lodge the same in writing with the Section Convenor, together with the grounds upon which it is based and the sum of Ten Dollars ($10). Should the protest, upon investigation by the Protest Committee, (i.e. the Section Convenor and at least two other Committee members), be deemed frivolous or unfounded, the deposit shall be forfeited. No protest will be entertained unless made immediately or within twelve hours after the Adjudicator’s award is announced in the particular class concerned. The decision of the Protest Committee shall be final.

25. Replacements: In the event of sickness: in Duets, Duos, Trios or Groups, a competitor may be replaced before the beginning of the session by a bona fide competitor in the Festival, and only with the permission of the Section Convenor.

26. Concerts: During or after the Festival, concerts or other entertainments may be held in which competitors are expected to take part if called upon to do so.

27. Photography: The use of video or other cameras including cell phones is not permitted except for the Press or official photographer appointed by the Committee, or for approved educational assessment at the discretion of the Music and/or Speech & Drama Sub Committees. Request must be made in writing prior to the commencement of the Festival. Refer Special Conditions of Dance Sections on pages 6 - 7.

Privacy Notice1. The Entry Form(s) collect personal information about competitors.2. This information is collected for the purpose of registering and determining eligibility for the

classes entered in Northland Performing Arts Competitions Society (Inc) (NPAC) competitions.3. This information will form part of the competitions programme and is available to the

Committee/Convenors of NPAC. It may also be used to inform competitors about services and events offered or recommended by NPAC and opportunities to support NPAC’s work.

4. You have the right of access to and correction of this information subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR COMPETITORS IN THE DANCE SECTIONS

1. The General Festival Rules & Conditions for Competitors as printed in the Syllabus apply in this section. In particular please note Rule 19 re communication with the Adjudicator.

2. Restricted Classes: Are for Northland Residents only, who have NOT won a first placing for that dance in any competition up to the commencement of the competitions.

3. Titles: Titles are required for all Group Dances, Classical Variation, Barefoot, National, Demi-Character, Song & Dance, and Musical Theatre classes. These titles are to be stated on Entry Forms.

4. Classes with a large number of entries may, at the discretion of the Committee, be divided. For the purpose of allocating aggregate trophy points, the divided classes will be treated as one. Placings for aggregate trophy points will be decided by the three highest marks awarded over the two divisions.

5. A Piano will not be available for dancing competitors.6. Music: All music must be on CDs, clearly named and delivered to the Stage Manager before

commencement of the class. There must be a separate CD for each dance. NOTE: Scratched, damaged or re-recordable CDs may not play in the Forum North sound system. Please ensure CDs are formatted as “audio” CD i.e. not “data CD”.

7. Curtains: Curtains will be drawn for Groups and Troupes only.8. Rehearsals: There are to be No Rehearsals On Stage between sessions except in special

circumstances and then only with the permission of the Stage Manager.9. Second Attempts: Only competitors under 12 years will be allowed to return to the stage for a

second attempt in age group and restricted classes only. No second attempt will be allowed in open classes.

10. Prizes: For Solo, Duo and Trio Classes: 1st Place - Trophy and/or Gold Medal. 2nd Place - Silver Medal. 3rd Place - Bronze Medal. Commended placings - Ribbons.

Unless otherwise stated, medals will not be given for placings that carry prize money. For Group Classes: 1st Place - Trophy. Group competitors will also receive ribbons for 1st, 2nd

and 3rd placings. Names of group competitors must be supplied.11. Song and Dance Entries: Lip synching or singing to a vocal background is not permitted during the

entire performance, nor is the use of a microphone.12. Repetition of a Dance: The same dance may not be performed more than once during the

competitions with the exception of restricted and age solo class or age solo class and boys only.13. Time Limits: Under 12 Years: 3 minutes 12 Years & Over: 4 minutes

Duos & Trios: 4 minutes Groups/Troupes: 5 minutes14. Tap & Jazz Championships: Competitors must dance in their solo age group class to be eligible

to compete in a Championship Class.15. Tap Championship: Dances cannot be a straight Tango/Latin or Waltz Tap.

Under 10 years, optional two or three speed. 10 years and over – three speed.

16. Entry Fee for a Championship Class or Variation Class is $10 per competitor.

17. Duo, Trio & Group Classes: DUO and TRIO competitors may enter twice in the same class but only once with the same partner(s).

In GROUPS of FOUR (4) or more performers, a competitor may perform in up to 3 items only in each class, but with different routines.

No person will be permitted to compete more than once in any one solo class.18. Personal Risk: All competitors compete at their own risk. The Society will not be liable for any

injury or losses whatsoever incurred by competitors or others involved in these competitions. The Society and those seconded to assist will not accept responsibility for the supervision of children.

19. Videoing - Generally, a competitor may arrange for his or her performance to be recorded by an audience member. Please check with the Section Convenor prior to recording.

You are reminded that in no circumstances may you record, on any device, another performer without their permission.

Flash photography is not allowed during an item. Please use tripods with consideration for the audience and note that the adjudicator’s view must not be obscured.

The adjudicator’s verbal summary comments may not be recorded by any means.

As a general guide $20 contributes towards any one class in the 12, 13 or 14 years age group while $30 contributes to each class in the 14 or 15 years and over age group. All donations are acknowledged with a receipt and recipients of awards are urged to write a letter of thanks to the sponsors. All donations received will be acknowledged in the programme.

The Society is registered with the Charities Commission (number CC39154) therefore donations to the Society are eligible for the applicable tax concession.

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDSThe 2016 National Young Performer Awards will be held in Palmerston North, at the Regent on Broadway Theatre hosted in conjunction with the Palmerston North Dance Assn on the weekend 14 to 16 October 2016.The awards are operated on a two year cycle:October 2016 Ballet, Tap Dance, Pianoforte & VocalOctober 2017 Orchestral Instruments, Modern Dance, Highland National Dance & Speech & Drama In order to ease administration for the PACANZ organisers, since our competitions are so close to the Young Performer Awards finals, we now hold our nomination classes for the following year. Therefore, at our 2016 competitions, we will be offering nomination classes for Modern Dance for 2017 national finals. Our 2016 nominees (nominated at our 2015 competitions) are: Tap Dance – Taylor Doyle & Kelly GillinghamBallet - Cadence Barrack & Summer Bradley

2017 Criteria For Modern DanceA Competitors shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1 October 2017B Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary rounds. 1 Modern/Jazz 2 Contemporary 3 All performers will participate in a Master Class, taken in the manner of an Audition,

conducted by or for the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be permitted. The Master Class will be taken into consideration in determining both the semi final and the final placing.

C There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D There will be a semi-final of up to 12 competitors who will repeat either B1 or B2 at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the Preliminary round(s).

E. For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

NB: Nomination of competitors by Societies should be based on classes B1 & B2 i.e. without the Master Class, but may include an impromptu class, at the discretion of the society..

SOCIETY NOMINATIONEach Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, who shall be selected by the Adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A, B1, B2 and C.The Adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals.The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the Adjudicator but will include:• A demonstration of adequate preparation• An authority of performance• A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.If the Adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made.
