In the late 1980s, the Monmouth County Park Commission, sensing the need foradditional golf facilities, especially in the west side of the county, purchasedtwo nurseries that were separated by Manalapan Brook. The two golf courses

that have been built there are completely separated and of different characters. The County engaged Mark Mungeam, partner in the architectural firm of

Cornish, Silva, & Mungeam, to design the two courses. The Charleston Springs courses were Mungeam’s firstin the Met Area.

The North Course was the first phase of the project, opening in October of 1998. Construction then startedon the South Course, where the MGA Public Links willbe played, which opened in the Spring of 2002. Thegreens on the South Course are pushed up, typicallywith one deep bunker in front and steep drop off behind. The fairways are narrower and often bordered by trees.

This is the second time Charleston Springs GolfCourse has hosted the MGA Public Links Championship, the first being in 2003.

Jacob Henny of Oak Hills used a scintillating straight ball to capturethe 66th MGA Public Links Championship at Richter Park Golf Course inDanbury, Conn., by three strokes with an impressive 36-hole score of 3-under141. Henny recorded four birdies in his first round (2-under 70) and four morein the afternoon to finish as the only player under par. After the final round,Henny credited a lot of his success to his longtime involvement with The FirstTee of Metropolitan New York's facility at Fairchild Wheeler in Bridgeport. In second place was rising SUNY Farmingdale senior Adam Larkin, who flewout of the gates as the first round leader with a 3-under 69, but stumbled to a75 in the afternoon.

History of the MGA Public LinksFourteen years after the USGA created the U.S. Amateur Public Links in

1922, a group of golfers at Hendricks Field Golf Course in Belleville, N.J., becamethe driving force behind the inception of the MGA Public Links. Hendricks Fieldhosted the first installment of the championship, which switched from match playto stroke play in 1961. After not being held between 1973 and 1983, it wasreinstated by the MGA in 1984, and since then it has been conducted on some ofthe most highly acclaimed public layouts in the nation, including Bethpage Black, site of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens, and nationally ranked facilities such asRichter Park in Danbury, Conn., Hominy Hill in Colts Neck, N.J., and Spook Rockin Suffern, N.Y.

High demand for the championship requires five local qualifiers across theMet Area. Past champions of the MGA Public Links include three-time winner LeeRichardson (1993, ’94 and ’99); the late Jeff Thomas (1992 and ’98), one of the bestamateur golfers ever to come out of the Met Area; and Mark Farrell, who won twostraight titles in 2005 and 2006.

The championship is open to male golfers who reside in the MGA district, have an official USGA Handicap Index of 8.0 or less, and do not hold playingprivileges at a course from which the general public is excluded.
