the scoop NOVEMBER 7 2012 Last Friday at Assembly I shared some key points from our visiting ERO teams feedback to the Board from earlier in the week. I want to again outline what a review is all about and then paraphrase some key elements for you. An ERO team visits a school on a cycle that now covers a period of anything from one to five years, with the return visit timeline based on their findings and reflections. Each review is centered on Student Learning - engagement, progress and achievement. The ERO team use their six dimensions of good practice (Teaching; Leading and Managing; Governing; School Culture; and Engaging Families) to gauge and assess how a school is performing around that central theme of Student Learning - engagement, progress and achievement. The reflection of our school was very good and the ERO team identified that we provide a school environment that is centered around our students learning and their engagement in the learning process. They saw very good, to high quality teaching across all learning areas that exampled our high expectations for students learning. They commented on how the parents and community are valued and seen as an integral part of the daily life of the school. They concluded that the school's curriculum is highly effective in promoting and supporting students' learning and that the school has robust self review practices in place. You can be very proud of our school, of your children, our staff and the coalition we have with you our families. We look forward to receiving the draft report by the end of the year with the finalised public report due out in early February. Next Monday is the Southern Zone Soccer Tournament. This is just the second year that it has been run (and last year it was cancelled due to weather conditions) and has been developed to provide something across all age groups that can't be fitted in with the Moffett Cup. As such, and, unlike the Moffett Cup, the opportunity to be involved was offered to all students in each classroom at the end of last term. Mixed teams across all grades were confirmed from those that indicated an interest and these are the teams that will compete on Monday. All other students will have a normal school day. It has been decided that this event will now run every year as part of our Southern Zone calendar which will again give all students the opportunity to participate next year. Lastly good luck to our two Y4-6 golf teams who are competing tomorrow at Mataura. Last Friday at Assembly I shared some key points from our visiting ERO teams feedback to the Board from earlier in the week.

The reflection of our school was very good and the ERO team identified that we

provide a school environment that is centered around our students learning and their engagement in the learning process.

This is just the

second year that it has been run (and last year it was cancelled due to weather conditions) and has been developed to provide something across all age groups that can't be fitted in with the Moffett Cup.

Week 4 Term 4

MANUKA You will have noticed that from Monday we have been putting a homework sheet into the homework books that supports the learning we are doing through the school wide Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme. As there are 8 home activities to be completed over a 2 week period you will have 1 sheet to work through with your child each night from Monday to Thursday. We appreciate you support and help with this. I am happy for any other usual homework requirements to be put aside for this time.

Certificates: Seren Carr for reading and Finn Pierce for word identification. Please make sure you keep your maths cards in your home folder as we use them to practice everyday at school.

KOWHAI We’ve been excited to have Constable Marty Laurie come and talk to us about Keeping Ourselves Safe. We still have some more sessions to go. Our writing has been about the things we have learnt that make us feel safe and happy

RIMU As we begin Keeping Ourselves Safe this week you will see some worksheets that need to be completed going home in the children's homework books. This is why I have omitted to add any maths basic facts for this week, although some children will have Basic Facts flash cards to practice each night. The class have been working hard on their Pet Day recounts for writing and we move on to writing fables next. We have finished with our boat making technology task for now and will return to technology after Keeping Ourselves safe is finished. We are all trying to behave like The Little Red Hen - stay on task even if others are playing, finish what we start and be kind and share. This is how we are reflecting our value Ngakau Tapatahi or Integrity this term.

Certificates Lily McAra and Logan Phillips

RATA This week we have begun The Keeping Our Selves Safe Programme. There are homework sheets to support what has been taught in class. In maths we are learning about position. The children need to know left from right and it would be helpful if you use this language at home. Please remember to return library books by Monday morning ready for our class library time.

Have a great week Evelyn

MIRO Fantastic to see just about everyone with their sun hats. Good work Miro. Remember these can be purchased from the office. This week we started the Keeping ourselves safe program with Constable Marty. An outline of what we are covering in class is pasted in the homework books and follow up activities will go home for family discussion. A big thank you for all the bits and bobs that have been sent along for our technology designs. Visit our blog to see some of our designs and creations. Team Miro are on assembly and would love to see you there.Enjoy the sun and have a great week. Kiri

Certificates: Grace Lovelock & Jesse Gough

TOTARAWe are starting Keeping Ourselves Safe this week, look out for homework activities to complete with family and keep up the great discussions about what we are learning about in this unit. We are looking at probability in maths and are enjoying using words like "likelihood, likely, unlikely, probable, certain and impossible".

Certificates: Emily Hay for showing great integrity and always being on task. Danja Jamieson for having great pronunciation of maori words and the confidence to share her mihi with an audience. Lachlan McCorkindale for sharing your maths strategies.
