On the 18th October our U16‟s

played in a Football

Tournament. They came 3rd in

their group and narrowly missed

out on the finals but played

brilliantly! Mrs Mostran

Good luck!

A massive well done to Emma

Ridley, Yr12 who has

successfully got through to

round two of the Youth Dance

England Young Creative‟s

project. This means that Emma,

her dancers and Miss James

have all been invited up to the

Royal Opera House at the end

of this month for an intense day

of choreography. The judging

panel (who include the likes of

Wayne McGregor – currently

the Artistic director of the Royal

Ballet and Richard Alston CBE –

one of the most established

choreographers in the UK) will

watch and interview Emma

during the day and then it‟s a

case of „fingers crossed‟! If

successful Emma and her

dancers will be one of 12

groups who will then have a

professional choreographer as

their mentor, take part in skills

boosting training weekends at

White Lodge (The Royal Ballet)

and then create a final piece

that will be performed at the

Royal Opera House in April.

The Year 10 and 11 GCSE

Drama groups and the Year 12

Theatre Studies students had an

exhilarating and terrifying

experience at a fantastic

performance of “The Woman In

Black” by Susan Hill and

adapted for the stage by

Stephen Mallatratt. They

travelled by coach to London

accompanied by Mrs Schilt, Mrs

Edwards and Mrs Ashdown. The

Fortune Theatre was a brilliant

setting and as we walked into

the theatre we were

immediately struck by the

atmosphere and the sense of

anticipation of what was about

to unfold. The two actors were

excellent in their versatility and

their ability to tell a spine

chilling tale with moments of

humour interspersed with

tension and fear. The journey

home was full of discussion of

the play and the clever use of

stagecraft and theatrical

devices. It has certainly made

a lasting impression on the

students. Mrs Schilt

World Record, Here We

Come!

On Tuesday 13th November,

we‟re going to be part of a

nationwide attempt to set the

record for the world‟s biggest

practical science lesson in

multiple venues. It‟s going to

involve scores of our pupils

across several different year

groups, as they conduct fun

experiments to calculate a

value for the earth‟s gravity.

Bean-bags and yo-yos are at

the ready! Joining us in the

attempt will be 20 other schools

who, like us, are part of the

Girls‟ Day School Trust (GDST),

the leading group of

independent girls‟ schools in

the UK. The attempt is being

made as part of this year‟s

celebrations of the GDST‟s

140th anniversary. Over 2,000

pupils will be participating

altogether. We‟re following

guidelines set by Guinness

World Records (GWR), and

everyone‟s very excited. Not

just the girls, either!

Wish us luck!

JUNIOR EDITORIAL

Dear Parents,

I do hope that you and

your families had a

fantastic half-term break.

With such a busy half

term ahead we are

certainly straight back

into the routine.

It was great to see so

many of you at Parents‟

Evening this week and

that it was a meaningful

opportunity to follow up

on grade cards. As I

have said to a number of

parents, I genuinely

welcome your feedback

on the experience as we

will look to improve it for

the spring term. The

signing up system

certainly needs looking

at but feedback from the

evenings themselves

seems to be good so far!

Recently at a Year 5

lunch we had a

discussion about

parenting issues and how

it can sometimes be

difficult to gauge what is

age appropriate or not

etc. Without wishing to

tell you how to parent, I

would suggest you might

look at

www.mydaughter.co.uk

which is run by the Girls

School Association, but is

a forum area for parents

and filled with

ideas/advice on all sorts

of topics but specifically

designed for those of us

dealing with girls! I hope

it might be of interest

Sian Cattaneo

The Travelling Book Fair is

in school next week!

It will be held in „The Den‟ from

3.10pm until 3.55pm on

Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday. This may be a

good opportunity to pick up

some early Christmas gifts,

which in turn gives the school

commission to spend on books

for the school library. As space

in this room is somewhat limited

we would ask that uggies are

left in the

sheltered

area

outside of

the main

reception.

We hope

to see you

there!

Christmas Song

Competition!

The deadline for handing in

your entry has now been

extended to next Thursday 15th

November. Remember, entries

do not have to be in the form

of written music, they can be

recorded in any convenient

format. Have a go! You never

know we may all be singing

your song at our carol concert

this year...

SCHOOL NEWSFLASH

Parental Lunch for Year 4.1:

Due to unforeseen

circumstances this will now take

place on Wednesday 14th

November.

Woodwind Quartet visit

Year 6

Year 6 girls were treated to live

Baroque and Classical music in

the music room as four

woodwind players paid us a

visit. The girls learned about the

music, the composers and the

four instruments; flute, oboe,

clarinet and bassoon. There

was a special emphasis on

Mozart in preparation for the

girls‟ trip to Glyndebourne the

following day.

NETBALL

Another successful netball

fixture this week. We took the

U11a and the U10a squads to

play Our Lady of Sion in

Worthing. The Year 5 team

made some excellent passes

and worked very well as a

squad to secure a 4-0 win.

Brilliant shooting from Carla

Follett Pedreira gained her

Player of the Match this week.

The Year6‟s had a bit of a slow

start to the game, but knuckled

down and worked hard to

achieve a convincing 9-4 win.

The opposition awarded Player

of the Game to Olivia Heal.

We also hosted a home fixture

for the U10 „B‟ team. They

played well as a team but on

this occasion, narrowly lost.

Polite Reminder - When

phoning with regard to

reporting any absences, please

mention if your daughter should

be attending the After School

Club, and we can inform Miss

Page accordingly.

The Glamour of

Glyndebourne

We learned about the life of

Mozart, we listened to his music

played live by a visiting wind

quartet, we turned his opera

into a comic strip and as the

orchestra began to play the

overture to “The Marriage Of

Figaro”, it all felt very familiar,

something we had been a part

of for the last five weeks. But

nothing could have prepared

us for the sumptuous Moorish

set designs, the atmosphere of

late 1960s fashion and the

beauty of a Glyndebourne

vocal ensemble experienced

from the front of the stalls. As

the performance progressed it

was a joy to watch the faces of

our year 6 girls, who were totally

entranced by the story

unfolding before them. It was a

truly wonderful afternoon and

one which I hope the girls will

never forget.
