Student fees are all-inclusive and arecalculated by combining the tuition fees,learning resources fee, and mandatoryStudents’ Union and Alumni Relations fees.Academic-related fees are exempt fromthe federal Goods and Services Tax(G.S.T.). Other goods are not G.S.T.exempt. Fees are listed and payable inCanadian dollars.
The payment of student fees entitles youto receive most learning resources andother support services (including tutorialassistance where provided) for the periodof active registration.
Students attending Athabasca Universitygrouped study courses at collaboratinginstitutions may be assessed tuition andfees that vary from those establishedwithin this Calendar. Those studentsshould contact an academic advisor or theOffice of the Registrar at the collaboratinginstitution.

Students are responsible for any expensesincurred when writing an examination.Most invigilators request a fee to invigilateexaminations. Invigilation centers may alsocharge a fee if you cancel or rescheduleyour examination.
AU does not charge a fee to invigilateexaminations at any of its three officelocations in Athabasca, Edmonton, orCalgary, Alberta.
Effective Dates
The following fee schedule applies tostudents who are registering in coursesthat have a September 1, 2017 or laterstart date, unless otherwise stated. It isAthabasca University’s intention toincrease its tuition fees in future years bythe maximum amount permitted underthe Government of Alberta’s Tuition FeePolicy.
7.1.1.1 Returning Students
If you are a returning Athabasca Universitystudent, please log in to myAU. If you areno longer an active student, you may stilllog in to myAU and follow the reactivationprocedure.
Once you have logged in to myAU, youmay register in a course and view personalinformation, such as your AU Libraryaccount, and your assignment marks, andcourse grades. You may also take care ofadministrative matters, such as bookingexaminations, submitting assignments,and requesting extensions or coursewithdrawals.

When first seeking admission to AthabascaUniversity, all students submit a $115 one-time, non-refundable application fee withtheir completed Undergraduate GeneralApplication Form.
The application fee is non-refundable andpayable only once regardless of whetheryour requested start date is unavailable orif you choose not to register in anAthabasca University course.
The Undergraduate General ApplicationForm, used to apply for admission, isseparate from the Undergraduate CourseRegistration Form used for registering inmost Athabasca University courses.

The learning resources fee and AlumniRelations fee do not apply to one-creditcourses.
7.1.1.5 Zero-Credit Courses

7.1.2.3 Canadian Senior Citizens
Canadian senior citizens (65 years of ageor over) are offered a reduction in courseregistration fees. Seniors pay the fulllearning resources fee portion of aregistration but are given a reduction ofone-half the tuition registration fee asreflected below.
Seniors are also given a reduction of one-half of the course extension fees; however,all other course and academic-relatedfees, including the one-time, non-refundable application fee and any servicefees, must be paid in full.
The seniors’ reduction does not apply tostudents living outside Canada or non-Canadian students living temporarily inCanada. Those students must refer to theregular fee categories.

The challenge for credit process allowsstudents to demonstrate that they haveacquired a command of the generalsubject matter, knowledge, intellectualand/or other skills that would be found inan undergraduate course for which theyare seeking credit.

You may pay your course registration feesin Canadian dollars by cheque, moneyorder, or authorize fees to be charged toyour Visa, MasterCard, or AmericanExpress card. Interac is available atAthabasca University – Central, AthabascaUniversity – Calgary, and AthabascaUniversity – Edmonton. Post-datedcheques are not accepted.
Returning student paying by chequeshould ensure that their student IDnumber is clearly written on the cheque.Cash may be paid in person; do not sendcash in the mail.

7.2.1 Refunds: IndividualizedStudy Course Tuition
A refund of tuition, less a coursewithdrawal processing fee, may be grantedif you formally withdraw from anindividualized study course either beforeor within 30 days after the course contractstart date provided the course final exam(or after all coursework has beensubmitted for marking, if there is no finalexam) is deemed not to have been writtenand you are not involved in a disciplinaryproceeding involving either academic ornon-academic misconduct.

7.2.1.1 Learning Resources FeeRefunds (Individualized Study)
Learning resources are items such astexts, student manuals, study guides,reading files and/or other instructionalmaterials such as software and access toonline resources. The learning resourcesfee contributes to the development andprocurement for any online resourceswhich may be part of the course (somecourses may be entirely online). This feealso covers packaging, shipping, andhandling of learning resource materials.You may be required to purchaseadditional items to complement thecourse such as binders, calculators, homelab materials, etc., and these are yourresponsibility.
A refund of the learning resources fee willonly be considered if you meet the courserefund criteria and the University receives

the learning resources complete,unmarked, and undamaged within 30 daysof your course withdrawal date. You willnot receive a refund for learning resourcesreceived by the University outside thistime frame (late return).
Note: All returned learning resourcesbecome the property of the University andwill not be returned to you. Most AUcourses include software, and/or softwareaccess codes. If the packaging aroundthe software or the software accesscode has been opened you will not beeligible for a refund of the learningresources fee. Once opened, thesoftware cannot be re-issued and thematerial should not be returned.
To obtain a learning resource refund,complete and submit the CourseWithdrawal Request Form (IndividualizedStudy), along with the learning resourceseligible to be issued to another student(e.g. returned complete and unmarked,including any unopened softwarepackaging) to:

7.2.2 Refunds: Grouped StudyCourse Tuition
You may be eligible for a refund of coursefees paid, less a withdrawal processing fee,if you withdraw from a grouped studycourse prior to and up to 15 days after thecourse contract start date.
The Undergraduate Course Withdrawaland Refund Policy – Grouped Study statesthe criteria for a refund of course fees, lessa withdrawal processing fee. Completeand submit the Course WithdrawalRequest Form (Grouped Study) in person,by mail to Athabasca University's Office ofthe Registrar, to the designated area of thefacility where the grouped study course isbeing offered, or by fax (780.675.6174), orscanned and emailed. 7.3 Delinquent Accounts
Students with delinquent accounts willhave their registration cancelled. Acancelled registration shall constitutewithdrawal from all courses and forfeitureof all fees paid to date. Accounts thatremain unsettled 25 days after the dateFinancial Services issues you a writtennotice are considered delinquent.
If your account is in arrears, you will notreceive Athabasca University services,including, but not limited to: examinationresults, transcripts or records of academicstanding, Letters of Permission, evaluation,graduation, library borrowing privileges,online computing access, or subsequentregistrations until your accounts havebeen settled.
This policy encompasses all financialobligations due Athabasca University,including those attributable to fees anddeposits; non-return of equipment,material, or library books; failure to followformal withdrawal or cancellationprocedures; and any dishonoured chequesreturned by the bank.

When you register in a course, you areissued a confirmation letter that indicates,among other details, the student fees paid.Receipts for payment of fees are notissued unless requested.
If you require a receipt for reimbursementpurposes by an employer, or for fees otherthan those listed in the confirmation letter,you must submit a separate request whenyou register or contact theCashier/Accounts Receivable Assistant(1.800.788.9041 ext: 6129). In Februaryeach year, receipts for income tax creditpurposes are issued.

7.5 Form T2202A (Tuition andEducation Tax Credit)
In Canada, you may be able to reduceincome tax payable by claiming tax creditsfor enrolment in and payment of tuitionand academic fees for AthabascaUniversity's credit courses. Each February,the official Tuition, Education, andTextbook Amounts Certificate (formT2202A) will be available to all eligiblestudents in printable format on AthabascaUniversity's website at myAU portal.
To be eligible for the tax credit, the total ofsuch fees paid to an educationalinstitution in Canada for the year mustexceed $100. Fees paid to the Students'Union and Alumni Relations are noteligible for inclusion in the tuition taxcredit.
The calendar year for which the fees arepaid, not the date on which the fees arepaid, is used to calculate eligible tuitionfees. Tuition fees paid for courses thatextend beyond the calendar year-end willbe pro-rated on the T2202A according tothe period of course delivery pertaining toeach calendar year. You may be eligible for the Tuition,Education, and Textbook AmountsCertificate tax credit for each month ofpart-time or full-time registration. Forincome tax purposes, a full-time student isdefined as a person actively registered in aminimum of two credits per month.
Only the initial contract period is takeninto consideration in the calculation ofstudent status as reported on your Tuition,Education, and Textbook AmountsCertificate (Form T2202A). Extensions arenot considered in this calculation.
The Tuition, Education, and TextbookAmounts Certificate reflects the number ofmonths of enrolment that are eligible tobe considered as part time or full time.Further details concerning the Tuition,Education, and Textbook AmountsCertificate may be found in CanadaCustoms and Revenue Agency's (CCRA)Personal Income Tax Guide or bycontacting a CCRA district taxation office.
