The first quarter of 2017 is already behind us, and we are faced with renewed ambitions and challenges. With greater capacity to undertake more and new stimulating assignments, we are confident this year’s plan will bring us all new opportunities to continue delivering projects with the utmost quality and transform communities to build a better world.
We are truly committed to this dream and we hope to count on you to make it a reality.
Despite the significant organisational changes that took place last year, we have managed to maintain, and even improve, the quality of our tendering processes and project implementation services. We have been awarded numerous contracts and have been granted multiple extensions of on-going projects, therefore allowing us to extend our reach even further into the International Development sector.
I would like to thank you all once again for your strong dedication and commitment in carrying out the valuable tasks entrusted to you during your deployment in countries all around the world. Your guidance, passion and technical expertise are crucial for the smooth and
successful implementation of our projects and we hope to strengthen this cooperative and professional bond we share to further grow and develop our scope of actions.
We will continue improving our systems and services in the coming months to ensure your journey with us remains positive and rewarding. Preparations are in full swing for this new promising year ahead of us and your feedback will be of paramount importance. As we have done in the past, we would like to invite you to participate in a survey in the next months to find out your thoughts and suggestions for improvement; your feedback is paramount.

Lot 1 – FWC Election observation missions and election assessment team missions, Global
Our International Development team in Madrid was recently awarded the project titled “Lot 1 — Election observation missions and election assessment team missions”, funded by the European Union (EU) and with a contract value of €215 million. Over the past 15 years, the EU’s electoral observation missions have become one of it’s most effective tools to support democratic development worldwide, and have consolidated the EU as a worldwide reference for its capacity to successfully advise host countries throughout the electoral process. The EU is committed to supporting the organisation of genuine elections in partner countries set in Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America, and therefore contributing to
reduce and mitigate the possibility of fraud, manipulation and/or intimidation, which could undermine the electoral process.
Through this contract, AECOM will be supporting the EU in the organization of these transparent election processes and ultimately contribute to the strengthening of democratic institutions, good governance, as well as fostering the trust of the people in their national institutions.
Over the upcoming months, Kenya, Liberia, Angola, Sierra Leona, Nepal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon and Honduras will be receiving support from the EU in the frame of this project, as they hold elections.

Technical assistance to the government of South Africa for the Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion (CBPEP), South Africa
Twenty two years after the advent of democracy, South Africa, an upper-middle income country, still suffers from very high levels of inequality, poverty and unemployment as part of the lingering effects of decades of apartheid and unequal development. Employment is therefore one of the three main priority areas chosen by the government from the 13 areas foreseen in their National Development Plan (NDP).
Our International Development team in Madrid recently signed a contract with the EU Delegation to South Africa, for the project titled “Technical assistance to the government of South Africa for the Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion (CBPEP).” The project has an overall budget of €5,884,040 and will be implemented over the next four years through our office in Pretoria. The overall
objective of the project is to assist the government of South Africa to attain its unemployment objectives through the provision of institutional strengthening services to line ministries.
The foreseen results are:1. Support to activate labour market policy
interventions for the unemployed.2. Assessment, development, promotion
and capacity strengthening of small businesses.
3. Definition of a set of recommendations to promote education and the development of skills.
4. Ensure effective programme implementation and appropriate visibility of actions.
The project aims to support the design and implementation of policies and
initiatives needed to create an environment for sustainable job creation and social development in the country. We are very excited to be leading this crucial intervention for the country’s future and we hope to contribute to the social and economic development of South Africa.

National institutions technical assistance in Cape Verde II (WASH), Cape Verde
News
Migration to Cape Verde’s urban centres is placing a tremendous stress on the provision of urban water and sanitation services in the country. The project, funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, aims to provide the necessary Technical Assistance to Cape Verde’s water and sanitation sector national institutions in order to improve the provision of urban water services.
The overall objective of the project is to consolidate Cape Verde’s public policies for the water and sanitation sector through two specific objectives: strengthening both the integrated water resources management and the regulatory functions of the water and sanitation services by supporting the entities that manage water and sanitation services in the country.
Through the implementation of this contract, AECOM will support the country’s WASH institutions in substantially improving the delivery of water and sanitation services, while mitigating the stress on available water resources. We are proud to be part of the project that will yield such crucial benefits for Cape Verdean households, impacting not only water resources, but also lives and livelihoods.
This project was recently extended to a third phase, increasing the contract value by an additional US$659,000 to develop water information systems and create a sectorial fund to support the water sector in Cape Verde.
